For our first episode of Season 7, we are humbled to welcome Fr. Tom Greene, SJ, the Provincial of the U.S. Central and Southern Province of the Jesuits. Fr. Greene was the one who first conceived of this mission to the U.S.-Mexico border in south Texas over three years ago. In this episode, he shares the origin story of this mission and what inspired the idea to send Jesuits to the border to try something new. Before becoming a Jesuit, Fr. Greene went to law school and practiced as a lawyer, so he also talks about the ways he has put his legal background to use in his Jesuit life. Speaking of trying something new, the border is marked by changes in policy that can often come suddenly and unexpectedly, requiring new ways of responding. Brian talks about an Executive Order from June 4th and how that impacted the ability to help vulnerable cases. He shares the story of Juan, Francy, and their kids who missed their CBP One appointment in April because they were kidnapped. They had to restart the process, and are still waiting for a new appointment all these months later. Joe talks about one of the recent fraud updates for the CBP One app that requires every member of a travel group over 14 years old to take a live photo to confirm an appointment. Sounds like a good idea, until you hear the case of Breanne and Maylene that shows how a change in policy can have devastating unexpected consequences. Teddy Two-Fingers kidnapped Delilah Droman from her father's mansion in Barron Heights. Teddy is holding her captive at his “nightmare factory,” located deep underground in parts unknown, where he and Hiamana are training her to be the factory's foreman. Delilah is trying to find a way to escape or to get a message to Lincoln, as she believes Lincoln will rescue her. Lincoln was at Stoolie's Bar & Grill, looking for Lupo and Booty Shooty, accomplices of the recently deceased Thoko Chikondi. Lincoln hopes they know where Teddy's hideout is. Teddy, somehow, called Lincoln at the bar and poured salt in Lincoln's wounds, driving Lincoln to start drinking the free shots offered by Maylene, a bartender there. Lincoln did not tell Magda, Ariella, or Billy where he was going, and he shut off his connection with Magda's meshwork ear cuff. He's been gone for hours, and they have no idea where he is. Dallas Taylor is a founding member and original vocalist of Underoath (1997-2003). He is also the frontman of Maylene And The Sons Of Disaster. On this episode, we discuss the music scene, coming up in central Florida and booking DIY shows, the start of Underoath, and why he eventually left the band in 2003, touring, eventually leading the start of his current band, Maylene And The Sons Of Disaster. From there, we discuss Maylene's new music, religion and beliefs, and throughout then whole episode we discuss the horrific ATV accident that almost took Dallas' life in 2016. To provide insight on the injuries that Dallas suffered in his accident, here is a direct quote that Dallas posted on his Instagram page on 12/18/2016: "On August 2nd I had a four wheeler accident. I Broke every bone in my face. Cracked my skull. Have a brain injury and bleeding on my brain.My face came apart from my skull in two places. Have a fully blocked carotid artery. Broke my arm really bad have plates now. Ripped my left ear down to the canal. The other ear has blood behind it so I can't hear well. Have blood on my lungs and lung atrophy from the ventilator and tracheotomy which causes my oxygen to be always low. Broke my upper and lower jaw had to have it wired shut. Had a trama stroke so I can't feel the right side of my face from that my teeth don't come together because of the weak muscle. Can't track left or right in my right eye and I can't produce tears in my eyes. I can't feel my eye either so I don't know when to blink and from no tears my vision is extremely blurry. Lost vision in my left eye for good. In a nutshell that's what happened..." Jamie Gordon played keyboards and percussion in The Constellations, and went on tour with acts such as: Snoop Dogg, Kurupt, Minus The Bear, and Jimmy Chamberlin (Skysaw / The Smashing Pumpkins). He played cowbell in Maylene & The Sons of Disaster. He is an active member of the elite Indie Drummer Collective. One of the earliest examples of Christian metalcore in the “scene”, The Devil Wears Prada have never been afraid to wear their faith on their sleeves. And though their earliest records are filled with worship, TDWP like Underoath and Maylene and the Sons of Disaster before them presented their faith as a lived experience rather than an imposition, allowing both Christian and secular fans to enjoy their music equally. TDWP has endured the ebbs and flows of a volatile scene that has lacked stability for nearly a decade. Despite this, the band have managed to persevere through member instability, and significant label changes to continue to produce music that demonstrates growth, whilst also retaining their signature metalcore sensibilities. Maylene and the Sons of Disaster's debut self-titled record incorporated elements of what would become their signature southern sound, whilst also leaning heavily on metalcore. The band would go on to refine their sound on their follow up record II in 2007 and 2009s III would again show the band's progression away from metalcore, and closer to southern rock. It was announced in 2016 that frontman Dallas Taylor had been hospitalized due to an ATV accident. Taylor had incurred multiple broken bones, internal bleeding, and significant head injuries. For the past 5 years, Maylene and the Sons of Disaster have been inactive due to Taylor's ongoing rehabilitation but the band has recently announced their return for Furnace Fest 2022 in their hometown of Birmingham, Alabama. If you dig Glassjaw, Every Time I Die, Refused, and early Maylene & The Sons of the Disaster, then The Undertaking! will be your new favorite band, thanks to the noisy, push and pull of their sound. The Undertaking!'s founding members — Brent Jasperse (drums), Keith Butsko (guitar), and Austin Visser (vocals) — were in the band before they even knew they'd created it, having spent their youths playing songs in each other's childhood homes. It wasn't until a revelation in early 2018 that the trio realized they'd been crafting something for decades: legitimate music. They invited James Moyer (bass) and Johnny Mercuri (guitars, vocals) to the party and formally established The Undertaking!. In 2019, they released an EP, became a staple in the San Diego music scene, and immediately caught the eye of Solid State Records. After signing with the label in 2020, they began recording their debut full-length, Funeral Psalms. The album is all grit and all punch, with lyrics that dig deep and music that swings for the fences. Themes of anxiety and depression are wrapped in a record laced with pop and '90s punk, capitalizing on the freedom to vocalize lament while having a good time. The Undertaking! aim to tell the truth with all fun, no frills, and a bunch of cordless guitars. JC got a chance to sit down with Austin to talk about being locked down, how they've stayed connected with their fans, and their new album.

Southern rock. In the pantheon of rock, it goes back to the times of Bo Diddley and includes many rock groups over the decades: Creedence Clearwater Revival and The Band in the 60s, The Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd in the 70s, Pantera in the 80s, The Black Crowes in the 90s, and of course the infamous rise of Kid Rock in the 2000s. But somewhere in the late 90s or early 2000s, a strange child of southern rock and metal was being born, calling itself southern metal. Given only about half a paragraph in the wikipedia page for "souther rock," southern metal is simply metal made by people with a southern heritage, usually incorporating elements of southern/outlaw country guitar with sludge metal production. A few early adopters of this style were Clutch, Eyehategod, and Neurosis and they helped influence a new breed of young southern metalheads that were ready to take the music to it's next plateau... Enter Mastodon. In 2002, they blasted through the metal stratosphere with their debut release "Remission," with the chunkiest and thrashiest guitar sounds that could be produced, but full of dexterity and grace. They, along with groups such as Of Mice & Men and Maylene & the Sons of Disaster gave southern metal a brief couple of years of interest before fizzling out. Mastodon is more than just southern metal though. They are well respected and widely listened to metal, the kind of which had been firmly underground and segregated by the elitism inherent in metal fandom. It's hard to find a metalhead that doesn't have at least a few good things to say about the band. Ally Meister is an amazing wife to her husband Drew whom she married after they met at California Baptist University in 2009. She is a caring mother to three beautiful children Nolan (5), Maylene (3) and Chase (1). Whether it is her family, friends or people that Ally has crossed paths with, she has an unbelievable impact in sharing God's love and supporting them. In her home, Ally manages Nolan's Type 1 Diabetes and Chase's epilepsy, cerebral palsy and therapy needs. She has not retracted her faith in anger, but instead let it grow her to a new depth of love and understanding of Christ. God has blessed us with her and her knowledge of him, so I hope the opportunity to share her writing with you has the same impact it has on so many in her life. Her story is humbling and powerful.
