It's a debate being argued across school boards, politics, and family dinner tables: whether educators should be including gender identity and sexual orientation in their k-5 curriculums. At least 5 Canadian provinces and seven US states now require the inclusion of LGBTQ topics, while more conservative states like Florida have banned any mention of such language altogether. Conservative lawmakers and parents argue that teaching about gender identity is inappropriate and confusing for children who are too young to understand the complexity of this subject and its potential life altering consequences. Educators, driven by liberal ideology, are ignoring parents' wishes and using their classes to push their own political beliefs on impressionable youth. Progressives believe that as the number of children who identify as transgender and non-binary rises, teachers have an obligation to dispel misconceptions about gender and provide inclusive, safe environments for all students, especially the most vulnerable. Contrary to what some right-wing groups claim, you cannot alter or influence a person's gender identity through education, while banning its teaching altogether will cause emotional and mental distress to our most vulnerable youth. IN THIS PODCAST:How to overcome self-limiting beliefs The power of baby steps Getting the momentum going HOW TO OVERCOME SELF-LIMITING BELIEFSNormalize them: the first step to overcoming something is to accept that they exist. You can accept their existence without believing what they say. Learn and adapt: Almost everything is “figureoutable”. There are things that you can learn to help you make meaningful changes in your life and mindset. There are things that we can learn. We can learn to do specific tasks. If there are special techniques, we can learn them. If there are mindset skills, we can learn them. We just have to apply ourselves. (Elizabeth Meyer) Self-belief: when you make changes in your mindset, you may not believe them immediately because you have spent so long believing the opposite. Work on building the structure for the creation and incubation of positive thoughts, and they will come. Depending on how people respond to the affirmation we can tweak it because it has to be something that we believe. (Elizabeth Meyer) If it feels too strange or ingenuine, remind yourself that you are learning and that it is a work in progress. THE POWER OF BABY STEPSFear and nervousness are normal. They are emotions that are telling you that this is something near to the edge of your comfort zone and that you are close to expanding yourself. Do not run away from the fear, because you can still take small actions despite it. It's normal to be scared. It is normal to feel concerned … taking a baby step allows you to feel “okay, I can do this one small thing” and then moving forward on that one small thing gives you permission to take another baby step, and another baby step. (Elizabeth Meyer) The shifts that you make do not need to be grand and scalable all the time. You can make small waves and movements. A small step is better than no step at all. GETTING THE MOMENTUM GOINGEach baby step not only helps you to make progress, but it helps you to slowly build up momentum. Over time, your small actions will turn into habits, and your new jobs will become daily routines, and before you know it your venture has become a part of your lifestyle and schedule. It all starts with a movement, and even the smallest movement done a little bit every day or week is enough to get the ball rolling. The most difficult part is starting alone, so pick something easy, commit to your growth, and take your first baby step. What does the term citizenship mean? Does it relate to place of birth or residency? What are the requirements of citizenship and have those requirements evolved over time? Who determines citizenship and by what criteria? We’ve been trying to answer this question in as many ways as possible in the classroom, during All-School Meetings and with varied guest speakers on campus. Citizenship is not only the theme for Andover's 2017-2018 academic year but a pressing issue that is affecting everyone around the globe. Since September 2017, more than 20 guest speakers—recruited from departments across campus—have touched on the theme of citizenship. Their talks have addressed a range of timely issues and spurred ongoing conversations on topics such as gender-based violence, politics and identity, climate and economic policy, citizenship and race, and others. The winter 2018 issue of Andover magazine explores the complexities of citizenship. Andover faculty were asked to contribute to the conversation and write essays on their experiences and interpretations. We then asked three of them—Marisela Ramos, Elizabeth Meyer and, Eric Roland—to read their essays for Every Quarter.

Rebecca Bloomfield of Jerry S Pearlstein Insurance has been privileged to work with the lives of famous women in American history like Abigail Adams and Lady Bird Johnson. She’s also been asked by small communities to honor the lives of women who were important to their beginnings. We have the fortune today of meeting one of these women as Rebecca portrays Elizabeth Meyer. Let me introduce you to Elizabeth. She was born in the southeastern corner of Switzerland in 1818. Elizabeth had a strong desire to open her life to a new world and new ways. So she joined a Swiss Protestant group headed for Wisconsin in this land called America. She had never before traveled more than a few miles from her parents’ farm. She wasn’t quite sure where she was going. But she took it step by step. Let’s talk with Elizabeth now and hear about her remarkable journey and the life she created for herself in America. The Journey from Switzerland to AmericaThe practical reason why Elizabeth left Switzerland. [3:35] The announcement and travel plan. [4:53] Starting off on the trip and their route. [7:12] The daily struggle. [8:55] Meeting and marrying Nicholas Meyer [9:29] Traveling on the sea in the 1800’s. Sailing in the Mediterranean Episode 110 Hugh Morrison s/y Savannah and the Corsica Classic In this episode. It's my delightful pleasure to interview Hugh Morrison. Hugh Morrison is the owner of the sailing yacht Savanna. Savanna is a classic 90 foot yacht built in 1997, the inspiration for this boat was from the classic J Sloops. Savannah participated in the Corsica classic Regatta this year. I talk to Hugh about the boat, his experiences sailing and his background. Hugh is a member of the Royal Yacht Squadron, which was founded in 1815 in the Thatched House Tavern in St James's, London. Today the clubhouse is located in Cowes Castle on the Isle of Wight in the United Kingdom, the club's patron is Queen Elizabeth II and the club's Admiral is Prince Philip. The sailing yacht Savanna has its own website http://www.sysavannah.com/ I'm going to take some information from the website and place it below. In 1995, an American yachtsman hired Elizabeth Meyer's J Class management to help him create a modern classic. He was inspired by the J Class sloops, William Fife and a number of other beautiful old yachts, but wanted a boat under 100' long. J Class selected Pedrick Yacht Designs in Newport, Rhode Island for hull and rig design, and John Munford Design in Southampton, England for interior styling. J Class, Pedrick, and Munford worked as a team to create Savannah. The result is a strikingly beautiful yacht that represents the paragon of 20th Century yacht design. Shortly after her launch in 1997 Savannah was awarded ‘Best Sailing Yacht' by both Showboats International and the Super Yacht Society. Savannah has sailed and triumphed in many regattas around the world. In the words of her designer “Savannah's long overhangs and high freeboard were inspired by the magnificent racing yachts of the 1930s. Her flush deck is accented by varnished teak skylights and coamings. Her beauty carries through a luxurious interior, with finely detailed, panelled mahogany joinery centred on a large and well-appointed saloon. With extensive day sailing and racing planned, there are staterooms for the owner, one guest couple and crew. Below the waterline, Savannah has an efficient cruising hullform, deep Pedrick Whale-Tail fin keel, and separate rudder. Engineered to last more than a century, her construction uses carbon fibre, Kevlar and PVC foam to be relatively lightweight but extremely robust. The tall, fractional rig, also in carbon fibre, drives Savannah to exhilarating speeds. In her creation, Pedrick has embodied the finest of classic style with the best of modern engineering and performance design.” I was introduced to Hugh Morrison by Sir Nigel Southward who I met while sailing in Italy and Croatia. several years ago. When I met Nigel. He was flying a white British Ensign. This is the first British boat that I had seen flying this Ensign so he educated me on the three different British ensigns. The only yacht club in Britain, which is allowed to fly the white Ensign is the Royal yacht squadron. Some information on the ensigns below. It was taken from Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_ensign White Today's white ensign, as used by Royal Navy ships, incorporates the St George's Cross (St George's Ensign). British yachts owned by members of the Royal Yacht Squadron are authorised to apply for a permit to wear this ensign. Defaced white ensigns include that of the British Antarctic Territory. Blue The Blue Ensign (dark blue field with the Union Flag in the canton) undefaced is worn by masters of vessels in possession of a warrant issued by the Director of Naval Reserves, and by the members of certain yacht clubs. Such warrants are issued to officers in the active or retired lists of the Royal Naval Reserve and the maritime reserve forces of other Commonwealth realms and territories. The master must be of the rank of lieutenant RN or above, and fishing vessels must be crewed by at least four othe...
More and more headlines relate to the horrendous treatment of gays, lesbians and transgenders - not just by adults, but by schoolchildren. Recent headlines include a high school student who describes himself as a gender-non-conforming gay person suing his school for insensitivity to bullying, and the controversy over transgender kids and school bathrooms. How do you protect the psychological well-being of all children? How does increasing sensitivity to sexual orientation affect children who are too young to even fully understand sexuality? Today's guest, Dr. Elizabeth Meyer, is a professor at California Polytechnic State University in the School of Education, the author of Gender, Bullying and Harassment, and the editor of Supporting Transgender and Gender-Creative Youth. Her experience as a former high school teacher has given her an inside perspective.
