The Eyes Have It & Tony and the Beetles by Philip K. Dick audiobook. Aliens have invaded the earth! Horrible one celled creatures disguised as normal human beings ! Well, at least that is what it seems to the author. Yes, The Eyes Have It is a whimsical story, making gentle fun of certain writing styles, but only a topflight science-fictionist like Philip Dick , we thought, could have written this story, in just this way. Tony and the Beetles takes place far in the future when Earth's enormous colonial empire is well established but the question is, how long can it last? 10 year old Tony grows up fast when history catches up with the human race. A sobering look at human history .. and our probable future. Two very different stories but both entertaining.

Access services in supermarkets are, for some blind and visually impaired people, an essential service to gather the exact groceries you need. Services like assisted shopping, where a member of staff takes you around the store gathering items for you, are offered by a lot of supermarkets but some were suspended during the pandemic. Auriol Britton decided to take Sainsbury's Supermarkets to court when she had a problem with her local store in Bristol, primarily based on the suspension of their assisted shopping service. We invited Auriol onto the program to outline the problem she had and what happened in court. Demand for eye services is rising rapidly and the NHS is struggling to keep up. Well, The Eyes Have It is a partnership between the Macular Society, Fight for Sight, The Royal College of Ophthalmologists and other sight loss organisations and they held a parliamentary a drop-in event at Westminster last week. They are calling for a national eye care plan to tackle the problems patients are facing. Our reporter Fern Lulham provides the details. (NB - Dr Peter Hampson is from the Association of Optometrists.) And swimming can be a great form of exercise for blind and visually impaired people but keen swimmer Aletea Sellers contacted us when she had a problem in getting access provisions put in place at her local swimming pools. She tells us the responses she got, good and bad. I think the reason I put Planet of the Apes as my all-time favorite sci-fi franchise is because it began when I was a little kid and I'd seen all 5 of the apes movies before Star Wars was released in 1977. I saw Star Wars just days after I graduated high school in Denison, Iowa in what is now known as the Donna Reed Theater, named after the iconic actress who was born and raised in Denison. Sound like sci-fi to me. What do you think? Is “It's a Wonderful Life” a science fiction movie? We'd love to hear your thoughts, scott@lostscifi.com. Seven years after “It's a Wonderful Life” was released a new science fiction magazine debuted in June 1953. Science Fiction Stories Magazine would publish once in 53 and once in 54 before releasing multiple issues over the next 6 years. The inaugural issue was 132 pages and sold for 35 cents. I found a good to very good copy on sale for only $25, which sounds like a bargain to me considering it contains a remarkable short story from the amazing Philip K. Dick. Turn with me to page 127, A little whimsy, now and then, makes for good balance. Theoretically, you could find this type of humor anywhere. But only a topflight science-fictionist, we thought, could have written this story, in just this way…. From Science Fiction Stories Magazine in June 1953 The Eyes Have It by Philip K. "It was quite by accident I discovered this incredible invasion of Earth by lifeforms from another planet." So begins this gem of a short story written by the master of sci-fi dystopian fiction, Philip K. Dick.  Philip K.Dick  was born in 1928 in Chicago, but he grew up in the San Francisco Bay area. Throughout his career, he wrote 33 novels and 121 short stories and he had almost no commercial success during his lifetime. In the science fiction world, he was considered a genius, but he struggled to make a living with low-paying science fiction publishers.  He was so broke at one point that the writer Robert A. Heinlein, who was a great admirer of his work, lent him money to bail him out of IRS troubles and he purchased him an electric typewriter.  The writer's life was deeply troubled: he married five times, had a lifetime of financial stress, struggled with substance addiction, severe depression, including a failed suicide attempt and he had a series of mystical experiences where he believed that he had been taken over by the spirit of the prophet of Elijah.  He died in 1982 after suffering a stroke and his greatest successes then occurred posthumously. Films based on his fiction include Blade Runner, Minority Report, A Scanner Darkly, The Adjustment Bureau, and The Man in the High Castle.   I personally think that Philip K. Dick was a writer who was ahead of his time. He was writing about alternate realities, drug abuse, authoritarian governments, and the true nature of a person's identity, which are all very modern and relevant subjects. John Bell is our narrator and he is also the writer, producer, and actor on the award-winning "Bell's in the Batfry" podcast, which can be found at http://thebatfry.libsyn.com/We are always looking forward to discovering our next writer, so if you are interested in contributing, please send us your short story of fewer than 5,000 words to cathy@widowmakerindustries.comMy name is Cathy McCarthy and I write under the name of C. Today's story is called The Eyes Have It, and the author is Phillip K. Dick. It was written in 1953. While he's known for science fiction stories, this one has tinges of that but is really just poking fun at the English language. I particularly identified with this one as I tend to respond to language in this way sometimes too. It's not enough to know what the writer was trying to say, for me. If they write something that I can perceive a different way, I will find it, point it out, and usually be told, “Oh you're being too literal, you know what they meant.” Whatever... that's how my brain works. Please enjoy and let me know if your brain works this way too, we need to stick together.Credits:Host: Amy Elle“Collected Sounds Theme Song” is by Cannelle https://www.patreon.com/melissaoliveriBackground music is “Magic in the Garden” by Rafael Krux Important Links:Collected Sounds: https://www.podpage.com/collected-sounds/ feel free to suggest public domain stories for me to read.Volsteadland: http://www.volsteadland.com – new episodes coming soon!Tales from the Shift: Become a guest! https://www.podpage.com/tales-from-the-shift/guests/intake/Twitter: https://twitter.com/collectedsoundsFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/collectedsounds/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/collectedsounds/ This podcast is produced by me, Amy, and is part of the Collected Sounds Indie Podcast Network. If you'd like some help producing your own podcast, please contact me.Podcast Production by Amy:Call me at 612-484-1684 (leave a message)Email me at: podcastproduction@amylotsberg.comVisit my site: http://amylotsberg.com/podcast-production/ My intake form: https://bit.ly/CSProdForm

The Vault of Silliness is open. As I stroll around inside, this tape caught my eye. A Dumb Birthday game from August 3rd, 1991. I have titled this one: The Eyes (that's e-y-e-s), The Eyes Have It. It begins with the theme music I would play before we had a ‘real’ song. There weren’t many well-known people born on this day, so we dive into the rest of the week to fill out the game. The cast of characters includes: Judy from Needham The whispery George from Pepperell The ‘eye-catching’ Constance from Weymouth Scott in Peabody I’m producing and on the phone from the control room And Jack Harte in Traffic Birthdays with all the SFX: Martin Sheen Tony Bennett Lonnie Andersen Robert Mitchum Dustin Hoffman Esther Williams Melanie Griffith – now the jokes that ensue here are based on a national news story at the time. I’ll leave out the details and let the comedy slice its way to your funny bone. Lastly, we have Keith Carradine There’s yet another round of accusations that could result in a Birthday-ola/Dumb Birthday-gate scandal. Commercials: Joan Cantwell for Gold Bond Keep It In Your Sneaker Dr. Howard Smith Promo! Erica and Scott welcome graphic designer, production superhero, and prototype craft wizard Lindsay Daviau to the show. We talk about her experience at Hasbro making (among many other things) fake games for fake stores. We also bring up her favorite games that she worked on, and her job at Restoration Games (with her husband Rob, who you may have heard of), where she works on games like Unmatched, Fireball Island, Stop Thief, and the soon-to-come Return to Dark Tower. SHOW NOTES 04m10s: This is Don Norman's legendary book, Design of Everyday Things. It frequently comes up in this show, although despite what Scott says, we have never done a dedicated episode on it. We did discuss it a lot with game designer and graphic designer Daniel Solis on Ludology 204 - The Eyes Have It. 05m09s: The prestigious Rhode Island School of Design (RISD, pronounced "RIHS-dee").  12m57s: For those of you outside the US, the functional metric equivalent to 11"x17" paper is A3. 16m12s: The most recent Pandemic Legacy game is Pandemic Legacy: Season 0. 16m56s: Laser cutters emit toxic fumes; please only ever use them with proper ventilation!  17m48s: The Brother ScanNCut. 18m34s: Gil's tip for making quick tokens: get a bunch of circle labels, and a bunch of poker chips! 1" diameter labels work well for standard poker chips, 0.5" diameter labels work well for mini poker chips. Once you set up to print to the circle template, you can make a bunch of tokens very quickly. And to replace them, simply print new labels and stick them above the old labels. It's great for early prototypes where the shape of the token is not hugely important! 21m08s: Heroscape 42m09s: The web suggestion form Lindsay mentions is right on Restoration's front page! 45m24s: The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 46m41s: Pillars of the Earth is both a well-known book by Ken Follett and a solid worker-placement board game with a polarizing turn order mechanism. 49m00s: This cake discussion actually came relatively early in the interview. It was a bit too much of a tangent to include in the main episode, but we've put it here as a bonus. Enjoy! 53m24s: For more on edible board games, check out Ludology 210 - The Way to a Gamer's Heart, in which we chat with Jenn Sandercock about her cookbook/rulebook where she gives recipes and instructions for several edible games.
