TODAY'S EPISODE IS SPONSORED BY INDIPOP!Special deals and offers for our listeners can be found at info.indipop.co/NEFARIOUSS6 E5 - Sexual Abuse Prevention - an interview with Kimberlee Norris of MinistrySafe CW/TW - Discussion of child abuse/sexual abuse"SEXUAL ABUSE DOES NOT SKIP ANY PARADIGM" - MinistrySafeYou've likely heard us reference MinistrySafe and Abuse Prevention Systems in past episodes, as Courtney used to work for them. Courtney has always seen the owners of this organization as mentors, because in alot of ways, they have shaped her to be what she is today - another survivor fighting for Justice, showing you what compassion looks like, and sharing our platform with victims and survivors impacted by these types of crimes. We are pleased to announce an interview with Wife, mom, attorney and cofounder of MinistrySafe / Abuse Prevention Systems, Kimberlee Norris. Kim is unapologetically fierce, and compassionate - a rare combination in this world. She has been victim-centric and always engages with empathy within the organization (which she co-owns with her husband, Gregory Love, both who are lawyers versed in Sexual Abuse Prevention). Kim will give you, the listener, insight into what she and her husband does, share some tips for everyone who listens whether you lead a child serving organization, are a caregiver or parent to a child, or really just anyone who would love to be involved in either now, or in the future. FACT: One in four girls and one in six boys have been or will be sexually abused in their lifetime.FACT: Sexual abusers not only groom the victim, but they also groom the victim's parents, guardians, or caregivers ("the gatekeepers") in order to obtain trust and find their way in the door.FACT: 90% of victims are abused by someone they know and trust with abduction scenarios ("Snatch and grab") are a mere fraction of sex crimes.FACT: Less than 10% of sexual abusers will EVER encounter the criminal justice system.FACT: Child serving organizations are only as strong as their weakest link. These organizations are the most at risk for child sexual abuse. Ministries in particular tend to be trusting in nature, which creates critically low protective barriers - an enticing target for sexual predators.FACT: Background checks aren't enough. Vital as they are, they are not a silver bullet and they do have limitations.FACT: There are patterns in predatory behavior, known as the abuser's grooming process, that are predictable - therefore, preventable.FACT: Predators do not have a specific "look" to them, as they do fly under the radar. They look like you or me. Many abusers come from all segments of society, with many of them being married, have their own families, and are educated. Many appear helpful, trustworthy and responsible.SOURCES -A two-part biopic that an indie filmmaker made about Kim and MinistrySafe - In Plain Sight: https://ministrysafe.com/inplainsight/Resource page full of helpful and insightful articles: https://ministrysafe.com/resources/ Fearless Series for Women: https://fearlessresources.org/fs4women/Fearless Series for Men: https://fearlessresources.org/fs4men/A few articles MinistrySafe has been featured in -https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/ministrysafe-to-lead-church-safety-workshop-to-reduce-risk-of-sexual-abuse-in-ministry-contexts-301015657.htmlhttps://abusepreventionsystems.com/news/https://www.dallasnews.com/news/faith/2016/09/14/dallas-seminary-becomes-1st-in-u-s-to-make-course-on-child-sex-abuse-a-must-for-would-be-clergy/?outputType=amphttps://fwtx.com/news/fort-worth/child-safe-part-ii-policies-fail/https://www.ubahouston.org/blog/2019/2/11/what-the-church-must-do-to-protect-its-most-vulnerable?format=ampOUR LINKS - Become a patron! Fact: There will be fewer American farmers ten years from now than there are today. In no way is this meant to be fatalistic or negative, it's just reality. āPeak farmā occurred in 1935 with 6.8 million farming operations in the U.S. The number has been declining ever since to two million farming operations today. Of those two million operations, about 175,000 do almost all the heavy lifting of food production and farm the vast majority of acres. That number is expected to drop as farm consolidation continues. Facing this reality, what strategies should be employed to succeed if your customers are farmers and each year there will be fewer of them? Joel Farley and Eric Lohse of Midwest Ag Advisors discuss their business and what they're doing to expand in the face of Ag consolidation.

Are you like our client Jessica who was terrified of getting lip injections? In this video join facial esthetic specialist Carl Clarke H.M.S, RPAC as he explains everything you need to know to avoid getting bad results. Social media gives us a false sense of the final result. Images taken right after a procedure does not truly reflect the best of what you can expect. Just walking down the street you can see ridiculously bad results with lip injections! Things like bruising and migration bumps from bad lip injections. We often think of the lips as two pillows, but they are more like columns that create structure from the top, the corners and the bottom. Your natural shape will dictate different styles, our technique and the products we use also determines the end result. Fact: There is no way to know what they will end up looking like UNLESS the injector understands what you want and they are skilled and using the best products for your procedure. Yes, we all expect discomfort and a little bleeding, but bruising and excessive swelling should not happen! How often does bruising happen? How swollen will I look? What can I expect from getting lip injections for the first time? What about the shape of the face? Your lips should look balanced for your unique shape and that is what our Diamond Touch Technique does so beautifully. Watch the video to find out more! MercyOne encourages everyone who is eligible and able to receive a vaccination to protect yourself from COVID-19. Unvaccinated people are more susceptible to the virus and its variants, and people who are not vaccinated make up most COVID-19 hospitalizations today. Many individuals could avoid the hospital entirely if they had been vaccinated. Still, there are many eligible individuals who have not been vaccinated, citing a number of reasons or concerns.Ā In this episode, we bring those concerns to infectious disease expert Aneesa Afroze, MD, to provide additional context and even dispel some myths. Claim:Ā The vaccine is experimental and not safe.Ā Fact:Ā The vaccine has Emergency Use Authorization and with more than 350 million doses administered in the U.S. the vaccine has received the most intense safety monitoring of any vaccine in history. Note: The Pfizer vaccine received FDA approval on August 23, 2021. Claim: The vaccine may cause infertility or impact pregnancy. Fact: Ā There is nothing to indicate the vaccines impact the ability to conceive a child. There were no significant safety concerns observed during clinical trials. The vaccine when given in the third trimester of pregnancy will allow your baby to obtain some protection through antibodies, and antibodies can be passed through breastmilk. Ā Read more: MercyOne maternity experts support COVID-19 vaccination during pregnancy Ā Claim:Ā Young and healthy people don't need to worry about COVID-19. Fact:Ā While it's true that most people experience mild symptoms and recover, the virus can cause severe health risks and some people still have symptoms for months after they are infected. Individuals requiring hospitalizations today include increasing numbers of individuals ages 40 and up. Nationally, COVID-19 deaths have included people from all age groups. Read more COVID-19 vaccine facts here. Crowded hospitals can strain available resources and impact other people who need care, unrelated to COVID-19. Ā This is why it is important to protect yourself and do your part so everyone can receive the care they need. Every time you turn around there is new hype about fad diets, super foods and eating plans; all with glowing reviews about the amazing results you can get if you use them. They may sound good but if those claims are not backed by research, dietitians donāt promote them. We are trained from day one to look for evidence-based research about any claims. Even if it sounds amazing and people are benefiting, we dig deep to find out more about it. We want to see evidence such as who else could be benefiting from it, who it could be harming and what long term results there might be. It is never a simple answer when it comes to nutrition. There are always many layers to investigate.Todayās interview is with returning guest, Dietitian Lisa Andrews. She has been recognized twice as the Dietitian of the Year by the state of Ohio, so I asked her to address ten of the top food myths.1. Myth: Only Shop the perimeter of the grocery store. Truth: Health foods are found in every area of the store. Read labels. Look for high protein and fiber, low sodium foods. Consider having a dietitian take you on a āgrocery tourā to teach you what to look for and avoid.2. Myth: Frozen meals arenāt good for you. Truth: Many frozen meals now come with healthy ingredients and they are portion controlled. They are easy to have on hand for times when you would otherwise go out, order in or settle for whatever is readily available.3. Myth: Frozen fruits and veggies are less healthy than fresh ones. Fact: Most fruits and veggies are frozen within several hours of being picked so they are at the peak of their freshness. Items that you have fresh at home, but will not get to before they go bad, can be frozen to use later, reducing food waste.4. Myth: Several small meals throughout the day are better than 3 large meals. Fact: There is no one eating plan that is right for everyone. Meal timing is dependent on the unique needs of each individual, taking into consideration their hunger, how they feel and their energy requirements.5. Myth: Eating after 6 PM causes weight gain. Fact: What you eat throughout the day and the type of food you consume in the evening, determines whether you gain weight.6. Myth: You should only eat organic foods. Fact: This is a personal choice. Pesticide levels in non-organic food are so low that there is no problem eating them, especially in items with skin or peel that you remove. Buy organic if you like, but donāt feel guilty if you donāt.7. Myth: You shouldnāt eat eggs if you are worried about your cholesterol. Fact: Eggs have good properties in both the white and the yolk. The sides people usually eat with eggs, such as bacon, sausage and cheese, are more harmful to a healthy diet than the eggs so practice moderation in all of them.8. Myth: Avoid all saturated fat. Fact: Try to limit saturated fat to 3 grams or less per serving. Many relatively healthy foods such as natural peanut butter contain saturated fat.9. Myth: Detox diets help to cleanse and remove toxins from your body. Fact: No, they donāt. The liver, kidney and lungs are what removes toxins from your body. Cut out extra calories and take out anything toxic that might be doing harm to your body like processed sugar but make it sustainable to your health. Strange, severely limiting diets, weird teas or similar short-term fixes can cause more harm than good.10. Myth: Drinking coffee is an unhealthy habit. Fact: Coffee has a lot of health benefits. It reduces Parkinsonās, may help with diabetes and gout and is a good source of antioxidants. It is what you put in your coffee that can be unhealthy.Lisa is the owner of Sound Bites Nutrition. Despite the wide reach of this debilitating condition, there is currently a lack of awareness and knowledge about epilepsy, leading to social isolation, work barriers and relationship issues. The general public, all levels of government, support workers and those living with the disorder require a better understanding of the impact of epilepsy in order to properly care for those living with the condition. Epilepsy has many different causes. In any given individual, the cause is a combination of their genetically-determined seizure threshold, an underlying abnormality in the brain which predisposes them to epilepsy, and factors which bring on epilepsy at that time. Determining the specific cause for any one personās epilepsy is usually difficult. In about 60% of all cases, no specific cause is found, much to the frustration of the epilepsy patients involved. Epilepsy of an unknown origin is called idiopathic epilepsy. In many cases it is presumed to be genetic. Basically, any lesion, scar, tangle of blood vessels or any other abnormality in the brain that can interfere with its delicate electrical workings can cause epilepsy. Common causes are head injury (eg. from a car accident); brain tumour, scar or lesion; brain injury during fetal development; birth trauma (eg. lack of oxygen during labour); aftermath of infectious diseases (eg. meningitis, encephalitis, measles); poisoning from substance abuse, like alcohol; and stroke. Suzanne Nurse, who holds a PhD in Medicine with a specialization in neuroscience and serves as a consultant on Epilepsy, presents a detailed outline of epilepsy and seizures. Through this video, she provides viewers with the beginning understandings of epilepsy, its intricacies and what people deal with when they have epilepsy and seizures. It is important to have a general understanding of epilepsy in order to provide assistance and support to those living with this neurological disorder. Questions for Further Consideration: 1. There are many misconceptions about epilepsy. What are some of the facts? Twelve Common Myths & Misconceptions and Facts about Epilepsy: Myths & Misconceptions 1. You can swallow your tongue during a seizure. FACT: It is physically impossible to swallow your tongue. You should force something into the mouth of someone having a seizure. FACT: Absolutely not! That's a good way to chip teeth, puncture gums, or even break someone's jaw. The correct first aid is simple. Just gently roll the person on one side and put something soft under his head to protect him from getting injured. You should restrain someone having a seizure. FACT: Never use restraint! The seizure will run its course and you can not stop it. Epilepsy is contagious. FACT: About as contagious as a gunshot wound! You simply can't catch epilepsy from another person. Only kids get epilepsy. FACT: Epilepsy happens to people over age 65 almost as often as it does to children aged ten and under. Seizures in the elderly are often the after effect of other health problems like stroke and heart disease. People with epilepsy are disabled and unable to work. FACT: People with the condition have the same range of abilities and intelligence as the rest of us. Some have severe seizures and cannot work; others are successful and productive in challenging careers. People with epilepsy shouldn't be in jobs of responsibility and stress. FACT: People with seizure disorders are found in all walks of life and at all levels in business, government, the arts and the professions. We aren't always aware of them because many people, even today, do not talk about having epilepsy for fear of what others might think. With today's medication, epilepsy is largely a solved problem. FACT: Epilepsy is a chronic medical problem that for many people can be successfully treated. Unfortunately, treatment doesn't work for everyone and there's a critical need for more research. Epilepsy is rare and there aren't many people who have it. FACT: There are more than twice as many people with epilepsy in Canada as the number of people with cerebral palsy (55,000), muscular dystrophy (28,000), multiple sclerosis (39,000), and cystic fibrosis (3,400) combined. Epilepsy can occur as a single condition, or may accompany other conditions affecting the brain, such as cerebral palsy, mental impairment, autism, Alzheimer's, and traumatic brain injury. You can't die from epilepsy. FACT: Epilepsy still can be a very serious condition and individuals do die of it. Experts estimate that prolonged seizures (status epilepticus) are the cause of many deaths in Canada each year. You can't tell what a person might do during a seizure. FACT: Seizures commonly take a characteristic form and the individual will do much the same thing during each episode. His behaviour may be inappropriate for the time and place, but it is unlikely to cause harm to anyone. People with epilepsy are physically limited in what they can do. FACT: In most cases, epilepsy isn't a barrier to physical achievement, although some individuals are more severely affected and may be limited in what they can do. For those who experience seizures, what can be done to be prepared for them? Knowing what triggers a seizure can help someone recognize when one may be coming and help them be prepared to deal with the seizure or lessen the chance that one may occur the next time they face a similar trigger. Some people may find that seizures occur in a pattern or are more likely to occur in certain situations. Sometimes these connections are just by chance, but other times itā not. Keeping track of any factors that may precipitate a seizure (also called seizure triggers) can help them recognize when a seizure may be coming. Some people will notice one or two triggers very easily, for example their seizures may occur only during sleep or when waking up. Other people may notice that some triggers bother them only when a lot is going on at once or it is during a āhigh risk time for them (for example when under a lot of stress or when sick). 3. What are some commonly reported triggers for seizures? The following are some triggers for those experiencing seizures: Specific time of day or night Sleep deprivation ā overtired, not sleeping well, not getting enough sleep At times of fevers or other illnesses Flashing bright lights or patterns Alcohol or drug use Stress Associated with menstrual cycle or other hormonal changes Not eating well, low blood sugar An infection Specific foods, excess caffeine or other products that may aggravate seizures Use of certain medications A head trauma: either moments before or up to a week before the seizure These seizures are not epilepsy. A provoked seizure is a result of the underlying cause or provocation. Glossary: Seizures: transient episodes caused by a disturbance in brain activity that cause changes in attention, behaviour or perception Epilepsy: a brain disorder in which a person has repeated seizures. A diagnosis of epilepsy is made by a healthcare professional typically when a person has experienced 2 or more unprovoked seizures.

Karen Fisher (RN, BScN & the Director of Care at the Hospice Wellington in Guelph Ontario), a certified Palliative Care Nurse with over 10 years of experience, defines the various ways in which bereaved individuals may work through their loss. She explains the emotional, physical, behavioural, societal, and spiritual responses to grief. She explains key concepts that help us understand the difference between what might be considered a normal grief response in comparison to an acute grief response. Questions for Further Consideration: Have you experienced a significant loss in your life? How did it affect you? Think back to the various responses you may have had and reflect upon whether your reactions were emotional, physical, behavioural, societal, or spiritual. Which responses stand out for you? 2. What were some of the helpful ways others supported you in this time? Was it helpful to share your story with others? Typically people respond to this by saying they just needed to talk and be heard. A distressed caller often just needs to repeat their story and have someone there to validate the loss and the pain. Putting a label to what their emotions helps them feel someone cares while in this moment of grief. 3. There are many myths about grief; one is that grief should last about a year. Fact: There is no right or wrong time frame for grieving. The length of time is purely individual and differs for each person. Reminder ā Dr. Allan Wolfeltās Six Needs of Mourners Acknowledging the loss - say it out loud Embracing the pain, āIām hurtingā and ignoring societal expectations regarding bereavement Remembering the person (or thing) who has left you Developing a new self-identity Searching for meaning but not to the extent of answering āWhy?ā Accepting and allowing support

(IN HONOR OF THIS WEEK'S EPISODE CELEBRATING LIBRARY AND COMPUTER NEOPHYTES, I REPOST EPISODE 5 OF SEASON 1, "THE BALLAD OF I.N. PHYTE.") Fact: There are still people in this country--young people, even--whose lives do not revolve around the internet. These are people who not only don't check their email every day, they don't even HAVE email. It's kind of refreshing, when you think about it. However, it can also be VERY frustrating when those same people turn up and decide to jump whole hog into it in the course of one lesson. It can be difficult to explain the concept of the world wide web to an internet neophyte when they are still trying to climb the hurdle of basic computer concepts. It is even more difficult to explain all of the above to a person who is aggressively ignoring everything you tell them. That used to be my job.
