Daron Joffe, a.k.a. Farmer D, is a farmer, designer, and ambitious field-builder promoting the idea of agrihoods and conservation-focused land development. He is the author of Citizen Farmers: The Biodynamic Way to Grow Healthy Food, Build Thriving Communities, and Give Back to the Earth, and the leader of Farmer D, an organization that creates agrihoods by collaborating with developers, nonprofits, and governments. He believes in the "village" model, where housing development is clustered, while large swaths of surrounding land is conserved for nature and agriculture. Farmer D and show host Neal are joined by Latitude Regenerative Real Estate change agent, Soraya Schneider. They discuss Farmer D's path to farming and agrihood-building, which included him dropping out of college twice and a surprise meeting with a monk. They also dive into how Farmer D tackles big projects, carefully studying a place's particular cultural and ecological nature and dealing with large governmental and nonprofit institutions, and they explore how he is taking on the monumental task of creating a new field of knowledge around agrihoods. It was at the dinner table where the personal exchange happened. That experience stuck with him as he looked toward his career. After high school, he took a kitchen position at the Wild Dunes Resort in Isle of Palms, South Carolina, outside of his hometown of Charleston. Brown was drawn to the cadence, the order, the process of the kitchen, and soon enrolled in culinary school at Johnson & Wales University. He completed a three-month cooperative at the Keystone Resort in Colorado as part of the degree program, where he learned large-format kitchen production at a high level. Back in Charleston, he joined Peninsula Grill as a line cook – and ultimately sous chef. It was where he first felt the power of the French brigade order, and where he formed a friendship with Chef Sean Brock that would shape his future path. Later, Brown went to work as chef de cuisine with Brock at Capitol Grille in the Hermitage Hotel. He became executive chef in 2006 and began implementing seed-to-plate sourcing that culminated in the creation of the three-acre Garden at Glen Leven and 150 head of red poll cattle at Double H Farms. In 2015, Brown joined the team at Southall outside Franklin, Tennessee, as Senior Vice President of Agriculture and Culinary. Rebecca's career began as a business owner in the hospitality industry, launching an event production company while attending college at Penn State, which evolved to General Management in the hospitality space. After pursuing her MBA in small business and entrepreneurship at George Washington University, she pivoted her career into specialty food e-commerce and retail, followed by years of General Management of Greensgrow Farm, a nationally recognized urban farm, CSA, market, and nonprofit organization in Philadelphia. She uses her financially focused approach as the foundation of her business coaching process, as well as drawing from various curriculum and tools that she’s developed from her one-on-one and cohort based work with farmers and makers. Rebecca and her family relocated to the West coast in 2016, and she loves living in Morro Bay California with her husband and 2 children, ages 2 and 4. For this week’s episode, I asked my longtime friend, Daron Joffe, to join me. Since early adulthood, Daron has been driven by the belief that the world is a better place when our everyday lives are enmeshed in the act of interacting with the soil through gardening and farming. Through hard work and fortuitous opportunity, he’s crisscrossed the country building farms and gardens and contributing to the agrihood movement, while cultivating food and community Along the way, he’s stacked up an impressive list of far-reaching agricultural accomplishments through his efforts.

Biodynamics is a holistic, ecological, and ethical approach to farming, gardening, food, and nutrition.Biodynamic agriculture has been practiced for nearly a century, on every continent on Earth. Biodynamic principles and practices are based on the spiritual insights and practical suggestions of Dr. Rudolf Steiner, and have been developed through the collaboration of many farmers and researchers since the early 1920s. Today, the biodynamic movement encompasses thousands of regenerative gardens, farms, ranches, orchards, and vineyards, in a wide variety of climates, ecological contexts, and economic settings. Come spend an evening at the 1888 Center with Orange Home Grown and guest speaker Daron Joffe, also known as Farmer “D”. Daron is the Executive Director of Coastal Roots Farm and the Leichtag Foundation’s Director of Agricultural Innovation and Development in Encinitas. Daron is the author of the book “Citizen Farmers”, and he is also the founder of Farmer D Organics and Farmer D Consulting, which designs and builds biodynamic farms and gardens all over the country. Our guests today are: (1) MARY PAT MATHESON, CEO of the Atlanta Botanical Gardens (2) DARON JOFFE, aka "Farmer D" and (3) Jule-Lynne Macie, "The Bug Lady."
