In this episode, we break down picky eating. If you're a parent, chances are you've dealt with picky eating at some point.  Picky eating is often times is nothing to be alarmed with. Kids will decide they no longer like a food they previously liked. As long as there are plenty of other foods they'll eat, this is not concerning. School-aged children can change their food interests based on who they spend time with at school. In this episode, Lily and Nick share their son's current eating habits and food preferences. They also want to know when they should be concerned.  The division of responsibility breaks down the role of the parent or caregiver in eating and the role of the child.  The parent controls what, when and where. What food is being offered, when it will be given and where (ie. home, picnic, restaurant) The child controls what they'll eat and how much.  Forcing and rewarding children is not recommended.  This is what you'll learn in this episode:  How to approach meal times with children Things to look out for that may be signs of a bigger problem The importance of listening to your gut  Here's what's on the menu: [02:59] - Tales from first time parenting and introducing new foods    [13:21] - Signs there might be a bigger problem and how to expose children to new foods.    [14:58] - Sensory and texture challenges   [27:37] - When should a parent consider supplements   [31:29] - Strategies for picky eaters during meal time   [43:51] - Happy Hour! Grief and Loss isn't often associated with "parenting", unless its in relation to the death of a child. But just as much as there is to gain when becoming a first time parent, there is also lot of loss with the birth of a first child. But these conversations aren't always had among Christians. The dark clouds of parenting aren't always talked about and this leaves many new parents to weather the storms of change and the unknown on their own. I hope this episode gives you a sense of community in your suffering and in your loss. I hope that you realise that trying your best- is the best you can do.

After going into spontaneous labour Beth shares with us her positive birthing experience where Corey discusses some of the challenges that come with being a support person. Although they thought they had prepared for postpartum it wasn't until they settled in at home that some of the real struggles of becoming new parents started to show which took a real physical and mental toll on both of them. In this episode we talk with Samantha Reisz, EBB Childbirth Class graduate about her experiences taking the class and preparing for a waterbirth in a hospital with her “Golden Ticket” birth team, who were skilled and prepared to manage a placental cord avulsion also known as cord snapping.   Samantha Reisz, she/her, is a Scholarly Assistant Professor of Human Development at Washington State University in Vancouver, Washington, just outside of the Portland, Oregon area. She completed her bachelor's in Psychology and master's in Infant Mental Health from Mills College in Oakland, California when she first began studying childbirth. Samantha then earned her PhD in Human Development and Family Sciences from the University of Texas at Austin, where she studied infant parent relationships and the transition to parenthood. Samantha is a passionate scholar and educator. After years of studying these topics academically, she finally was able to live her own research with the birth of her first child. Samantha lives in Vancouver, Washington with her baby, partner, and two dogs.    Samantha shares how she prepared to give birth for the first time with the use of a doula who recommended the EBB Childbirth Course. Samantha and her partner planned for a waterbirth in a hospital with an OBGYN attending the birth. This week's episode of Parent Tell finds Kaila discussing interior design, specifically for nurseries and kids' rooms, with Naomi Coe. Naomi Coe is the founder of Little Crown Interiors and author of the nursery design book, Your Perfect Nursery. She founded Little Crown Interiors in 2008, focusing her design studio on nurseries and child spaces after seeing this specialized skill missing from other firms.  Bringing together beauty, functionality and safety, Naomi believes in creating spaces for her clients that are unique, intentional and curated. Kaila and Naomi have a thorough discussion about how overwhelmed most parents feel about turning one of their bedrooms into a baby's room, how little babies actually need in their nursery, and how social media has turned interior design into some perfection competition that none of us will ever win (nor should we really be striving to). While Kaila and Naomi talk about wanting items that grow with the child and the importance of safety, they also touch on the privilege that naturally comes with being able to afford luxury baby items and an interior designer in the first place. Little Crown Interiors offers full nursery and kid's interior design services for clients in Southern California, and E-Design services for anyone in the U.S. or Canada. Over the last 14+ years, LCI's work has been featured widely in print, web and on television including Domino, People Magazine, California Home & Design Magazine, and many more.To sign up for The Postpartum Body Solution-Group Coaching Program click here! For more information about Kaila, episode topics and behind the scenes details, and of course painfully relatable memes follow Parent Tell on InstagramIn the mood to tell about your parenting? Parent Tell

This week's episode of Parent Tell focuses on the extremely unequal "balance" (lol, that's just what they want us to think) that almost always exists between the birthing person and their partner when it comes to figuring how how this whole having and raising a child thing is going to work. Kaila spoke with an old friend and new mom, Kisha, about her experiences with suddenly being left to do 99.9999% of the parenting after her son was born, when there had been zero previous indications in her marriage that that's how it was all going to go down.Kaila and Kisha hone in on where our individual ideas of what parenting and domesticity come from, why we need to potentially flip the script and be the opposite of the domestic role models we had growing up, as well as how these two women themselves are working really hard to do just that.  Because when you know better it's time to do better for ourselves, our loved ones, and especially those kiddos who are watching and learning. For more information about Kaila, episode topics and behind the scenes details, and of course painfully relatable memes follow Parent Tell on InstagramIn the mood to tell about your parenting? Kaila sat down with Helen Thompson, an Australian podcaster but also a baby massage instructor. During their talk, Kaila and Helen discuss how amazing baby massage can be for your little one's digestive system, relaxation, and sleep but also why both parents can stand to gain insight and peace from massaging their baby as well. Our skin is our bodies' largest organ and connecting with your child through touch creates a safe and healthy bond while also reminding us of the importance of slowing down, listening to our bodies, and seeing what they can teach us.Check out Helen's podcast, First Time Mums Chat (and see if you can find the episode with Kaila as a guest!Snag yourself a baby massage cheat sheet from Helen's website!Follow Parent Tell on Instagram for more content, discussion, and engagement!A bit more about Helen:Helen has spent more than three decades working with babies and toddlers and currently lives on the beautiful North West coast of Tasmania, in Australia. It's a big thing in your life.  And not to have someone who you can just hold their hand or just feel some type of comfort, and you will be surrounded by strangers, that was my absolute biggest fear of all was to be by myself." —Byuanni Connect with Michelle Smith:Website:  BirthEaseServices.comFacebook:   Birth Ease,   The Birth Ease PodcastInstagram:    @birtheasemichellesmithYouTube:    Birth EaseLinkedIn:  Birth Ease Michelle SmithPinterest:  Birth EaseShow:  Birth Ease

Heidi and I discuss candidly our expectations we had on ourselves before becoming mothers and how unrealistic our expectations of motherhood actually were! We discuss the feeling when you first meet your newborn baby, and the differences of immediate bonding between each mother, we discuss how we are born as mothers when our babies are born and this changes us as a person, and we throw in some chat about maternity leave and the hilarious preconceived ideas about how we will spend this year of leisure!!! We also have some really interesting chats surrounding that mumma bear protective instinct that comes in to play when our little baby come into the world...... and much much more! In episode 42 of The C-Word, we chat with Breakfast Radio, Media and Podcast Presenter, Heidi Anderson. Life for Heidi is a little different these days. She's elbow deep in shitty nappies, spew and baby cuddles after the birth of my first baby Memphis. But while he sleeps or feeds, she is madly typing chapters for her first book, creating self-love workshops and oversharing her new life as parents on her and hubby Griffo's podcast, First-Time Parents. Before mum life, Heidi worked in breakfast radio as a host around the country for ten years (we know her best from Perth's 92.9 breakfast show) sharing too many stories from everyone else's life! But she's also an anxious ball of mess, who loves a bottle of wine and meditates daily to keep the demons away. Six years ago, she discovered writing as a therapeutic tool, and she has been oversharing in her blog and online columns for publications since! She also spends a gross amount of time on social media doing the same. She's now working with other Aussie celebs to champion mental illness and body image causes through key-note speaking, social media and her workshops! Today we share with you the birth story of our first born, Rowen Rae.  This episode tells a little back story of moving with the military promptly before she was born, and the wild and wicked fast ride that we took together bringing her earth side.  Thank you to our amazing doula, Trish, and our incredible midwife Shelrel.  We have memories etched forever from this beautiful moment and our sweet girl has followed suit with her urgent arrival, even in toddlerhood.  Also a huge thanks to our friends Karen and Mark who scooped us up and took us under their wings and into their family during our time in Alabama.  As mentioned in this episode, we honeymooned in Belize at X'Tan'Ha and highly recommend it!

Photo by Matthew Ingram via Flickr 'Tis the season for sleepaway camp and summer sleepovers! For some parents and kids, though, the prospect of a night away from home is scary. There are so many ‘what-if's' that could happen: what if they're cold? what if they get homesick? what if...what if...what if... But what if you let your kid go anyway? What if you work together to tackle any fear and uncertainty, and give your son the opportunity to test his skills and stamina? Time away from home is an opportunity for boys to: Discover new parts of themselves Build their resilience & self-esteem Be in charge of their own growth Learn how to struggle, suffer and navigate feelings of boredom Connect and collaborate with others Sleepovers and sleepaway camp are a great opportunity for parental growth and development too. When you send your son away (temporarily!), you learn to.. Let go. Trust your kids Allow other adults to mentor and influence your child. Still nervous?
