This is the fifith in a series of episodes on How To Live in 2025, focusing on the thoughts, feelings, and actions we need to thrive, develop, create, and resist. In other words, tools that don't merely deaden us in the frantic pursuit of survival, but that assist us in nourishing ourselves, each other, and the world, all together. The theme isPEACEKEEPand my guest isCHEYNEY RYAN.Cheyney works withThe Oxford Consortium for Human Rights. He's a a researcher; professor; founder of the Institute for Ethics, Law, and Armed Conflict at Oxford; and author, most recently, of the excellent book,Pacifism as War Abolitionism and also ofThe Chickenhawk Syndrome: War, Sacrifice, and Personal Responsibility, as well as many articles on peace activism, pacifism, Marxism, and nonviolent action (you can find links to plenty of the here).PEACEKEEP was a word I had to invent for the show because we have such an undeveloped language of peace. While the lexicon of war is extensive, the act of creating true peace in the world doesn't exist in an active word. That is in part because thewar system - as Cheyney calls the autonomous, seemingly inexorable network of war activities, sites, motivations, and contracts - has instead on the articulation of its own anatomy. It's entranced us into detailing its every contour so that we become more and more convinced of its reality and density.

There is ample evidence of the benefits of midwifery care for uncomplicated pregnancies, including lower rates of inductions, episiotomies, and cesareans. So why aren't midwives more widely used in the U.S. (like they are in the rest of the world!)? Dr. Melissa Cheyney talks with Adriana all about midwifery care including the different types of midwives, their certifications, where they practice, and the importance of OBs, perinatologists, and midwives working together to provide you with the right amount of care (instead of too much, too soon or too little, too late). Are you looking for strategies to strengthen your donor relationships? Or how to overcome some of the many challenges nonprofits are facing today? In today's episode, we chat with Dr. Mark Scott from the Oishei Foundation, an organization dedicated to strengthening and supporting nonprofits. We dive into how his organization provides support for nonprofits and discuss new demands and challenges nonprofits are facing around staffing shortages, competition with the corporate sector, and the struggle to find good help. Plus, Dr. Scott gives us some strategies to help overcome these obstacles. He also talks about how nonprofits can be more realistic with their overhead costs when submitting grant proposals to funders and how to build better relationships with them. He gives great strategies for strengthening these donor relationships like taking small relationship-building actions over time and how this can help your organization succeed and better serve your community. This episode is full of practical tips nonprofit leaders can take action on today. About Dr. Mark Scott: Mark joined the Foundation in January 2022 to lead Oishei's philanthropic support practice that is designed to strengthen and support the WNY nonprofit ecosystem. He works closely with Foundation staff to enhance the capacity and work of grantee organizations and community partners. He oversees the Foundation's initiatives in leadership development, network building, and convening, most notably the Karen Lee Spaulding Oishei Fellowship for Leaders of Color, Community Conversations for Leaders of Color, and the Oishei Leader program. Mark holds a Ph.D. in Organizational Leadership and Policy, an MBA from Niagara University, and a BS in Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Management from Cheyney University in Cheyney, Pennsylvania, the nation's oldest Historically Black College & University (HBCU). Episode Summary: In this episode, you will learn strategies for strengthening donor relationships and overcoming obstacles in the nonprofit sector, like: Providing support for nonprofit organizations (8:20) Building capacity in your communities (12:05) New demands nonprofits are currently facing (15:00) Overcoming challenges of not being able to find good employees (18:35) Being realistic with overhead costs in grant proposals (22:45) Making the funding process easier (29:05) Tips for nonprofits to build better donor relationships (34:45) Teasers: “But what we are finding is that because nonprofits stepped up and they had become so heavily dependent on government resources during the COVID pandemic period, they have kind of lost their way.” “Nonprofits really need unrestricted support.” “People are doing nonprofit work and not being paid a living wage. So it's like helping to fight poverty, but being in poverty themselves because they're not making a living wage.” “When we play with the ask, we perpetuate this vicious cycle of undercutting the work.” “If you build that relationship over a period of time, and you don't always have to ask, the funder will see it.” Huge thank you to our sponsor! We pick up with Curt sharing about Cora's experience in a story group. Specifically, we talk about about why Cora's intense bouts of panic were her body's way of saying “something is wrong and needs care and attention.” We also talk about a woman named Cheyney who experiences deep healing as a result of taking in the acceptance and embrace of other group members in the precise moment when she is feeling intense shame. This is how neural networks get rewired. This is how healing happens. We need other people.
The Shape of Campus Ministry Today Steve Cheyney tells us about the current priorities of most campus ministries, because of changes in the priorities of most college students of the current generation, often referred to as Generation Z. Cheyney calls the mental health circumstances of many of these young adults a current "crisis". The causes, he says, are related to the ways students relate to each other and to other people, mostly via their devices. They want to impact society, improve the world, and find themselves often unable to connect. That shapes ministry to college students, with a focus on counseling and pastoral care. That also means that campus ministries --- and local congregations near a university campus --- will miss the boat if they focus on traditional Bible studies, Sunday morning worship, or other "religious" events. The veteran of more than two decades of campus ministry says there are many great ways that churches and organizations can provide positive Jesus-centered influence particularly for this generation. Listen to this podcast with leaders of your congregation. The Rev. Dr. Steve Cheyney is university pastor at UNC-Charlotte and leads the Niner United ministry there. He also is on the faculty of the Honors College at Charlotte.
Dr. Howell talks with Dr. Steve Cheyney about the appeal, study, and understanding of conspiracy theories. The University Pastor and Honors College faculty member at UNC Charlotte, Dr. Cheyney holds a B.S. from Western Carolina University, a master's degree from Duke University, and a doctorate from Emory University.

In this episode we talk with Samantha Reisz, EBB Childbirth Class graduate about her experiences taking the class and preparing for a waterbirth in a hospital with her “Golden Ticket” birth team, who were skilled and prepared to manage a placental cord avulsion also known as cord snapping. Samantha Reisz, she/her, is a Scholarly Assistant Professor of Human Development at Washington State University in Vancouver, Washington, just outside of the Portland, Oregon area. She completed her bachelor's in Psychology and master's in Infant Mental Health from Mills College in Oakland, California when she first began studying childbirth. Samantha then earned her PhD in Human Development and Family Sciences from the University of Texas at Austin, where she studied infant parent relationships and the transition to parenthood. Samantha is a passionate scholar and educator. After years of studying these topics academically, she finally was able to live her own research with the birth of her first child. Samantha lives in Vancouver, Washington with her baby, partner, and two dogs. Samantha shares how she prepared to give birth for the first time with the use of a doula who recommended the EBB Childbirth Course. Samantha and her partner planned for a waterbirth in a hospital with an OBGYN attending the birth. After experiencing the beautiful waterbirth she had desired, complications arose in the 3rd stage with a placental cord avulsion. #064: In this episode of Beyond the Culture, Dr. Walker speaks with the 1982 NCAA National Finalist Cheyney State College Lady Wolves . On March 28th 1982 Cheyney State College (now Cheyney University) Lady Wolves basketball team coached by HOF coach C. Vivian Stringer, laced up their shoes to play the Lady Techsters of Louisiana Tech University. It was an historic night. It was the first ever NCAA Division 1 Women's Basketball Championship Game. It was the first and only time that a HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and University) competed in an NCAA Division One final four and championship game.It was the first time an all-Black women's team with all-Black coaching staff played for a Division 1 national title. It's been 40 years since that momentous occasion. And 40 years later, herstory can never be erased. On this episode of Beyond the Culture, I have the esteemed honor. It's been 40 years since the first NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Tournament. Did you know that a Philadelphia area school made it to the final? It wasn't a Big 5 school or Drexel -- it was Cheyney University, then Cheyney State College. The Wolves were a dominant force coached by a legend in C. Vivian Stringer, and they became the only HBCU to this day to ever make it to the title game, where they lost to Louisiana Tech, 76-62. The Cheyney story is a great one, but one until recently that had kind of been lost to history. But there has been a strong push on this 40th anniversary to give that team the credit it deserves. One of the people leading that charge is Kyle Adams. He is a Cheyney alum and a former head women's basketball coach at Cheyney, and he's on the podcast today to look back on a magnificent story. Mark said she should be demoted because she is now voicing the party line, and Joe argued that more common sense, truthful, independent, free-thinking leadership is exactly what the GOP needs. An argument ensued. Some listeners, and Mark, said "she should keep her mouth shut," but others argued women should be permitted to speak.

Coached by Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame coach C. Vivian Stringer, The 1982 Cheyney University Women's Basketball program holds the distinction of being the first and only HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) Women's Basketball program to advance to the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship Game. This program also holds the distinction of being the only HBCU Women's Basketball Program to have players achieve KODAK ALL- AMERICAN in Valerie Walker in 1981,1982, and Yolanda Laney in 1984. No other Historically Black College or University Basketball program, WOMEN or MEN, has reached the heights on the DIVISION 1 level the way the 82 Cheyney Lady Wolves has. The only other HBCU team that could compare to this team would be the 1984 Cheyney team that would return to NCAA Final Four. One of many things that made what those Cheyney teams were able to do so impressive was that it was and is a low-resource institution. Cheyney's enrollment in 1982 was around five thousand students. Cheyney defeated (Auburn, North Carolina State, Kansas State, and Maryland) all had student enrollments of over twenty thousand students. The 82 team finished with a record of 27-2. The ladies were undefeated at home for four years. The team won the NCAA East Regional Championship and would advance to the Final Four, beating the University of Maryland before falling to Louisiana Tech in the National Championship game. This team would enter the tournament as a No. 2 seed. The program would continue to achieve, advancing to the next two NCAA National Tournaments. The Lady Wolves would return to the NCAA Final Four in 1984, losing to Tennessee in the National Semi-Finals. Ten years after the passing of Title IX, which provided social and gender equity for female athletes, these women endured racism, sexism, and limited resources to reach heights yet to be achieved by many programs, let alone Division I HBCU women's basketball programs. The 1982 Cheyney University Women's Basketball program holds the distinction of being the first and only HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) Women's Basketball program to advance to the inaugural NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship Game. This program also holds the distinction of being the only HBCU Women's Basketball Program to have players achieve KODAK ALL- AMERICAN in Valerie Walker in 1981,1982, and Yolanda Laney in 1984. *Record of 27-2. *Finished season ranked No. 2 in the nation. *Repeated as Pennsylvania State Champions *Undefeated at home for four seasons. *Won Eastern Regional Championship by defeating Auburn, North Carolina State, and Kansas State. *Defeated the University of Maryland of the Atlantic Coast Conference to advance to the National Championship game. *Valerie Walker, Yolanda Laney, and Rosetta Guilford were voted to the ALL EAST regional team. *Valerie Walker finished top three in voting for the prestigious WADE TROPHY, given to the nation's top women's basketball player. *Walker was also voted to the KODAK ALL AMERICAN TEAM for the second year in a row. *Coach Vivian Stringer was nominated for the STAYFREE NATIONAL COACH OF THE YEAR award.
