Today, David Waldman and Greg Dworkin KITM to that rhumba beat, as we go chick chicky boom, chick chicky boom: From Babalú! to Desilu! Long before CRT and DEI, there was of course, racism. Desi Arnaz with Lucille Ball brought function, profit and diversity to television. The Gop TLDR budget bill slipped through during the night. Why bother to smuggle in evil little bills when their whole point is to deliver an evil huge bill? Once they find a way around the filibuster, the only hurdle left will be reality. Donald K. Trump makes his triumphant return from the Middle East as master of the art of taking credit for the deals. He returns to his passion of military design, adding engines to fighter jets like Bob Ross adding happy little trees to paintings. No ugly black stealth planes though. We all know how this administration feels about blacks in the Air Force. Trump has lost another global election, this time in Romania. Pope Leo (Bob) XIII gave JD Vance the brushoff, but stepped forward to greet the President of Ireland. (You know where to find RTÉ News.) If Trade deals are like dating and agreements are like marriage, Trump is the ex that needs a restraining order. (You know where to find Ana Cabrera.) 5 years after their separation, Britain and the EU are patching things up.

After nearly 20 years of marriage, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz called it quits. Their divorce was quick, but it wasn't simple. They'd grown Desilu into a major Hollywood studio, on par with MGM, Warner Brothers and Twentieth Century Fox. In order to keep the business going, they had to work together. And when that didn't work out, Lucy had to figure out how to be the boss. Remember, kids, history hoes always cite their sources! “Lucy and Jim Bailey” (November 6, 1972) Basically, Lucille Ball did a solid for one gay performer, but in doing this, she also helped make gays a little less scary for America. Jim Bailey was a female impersonator who who had already made appearances on late night TV for this uncanny ability to turn himself into female celebs. Lucy, however, gave him a showcase on her popular prime time sitcom, showing her viewers that not only were drag queens not scary, but in fact they can be a lot of fun. How can a podcast be titled “Lucy and Desi: Unconditional Love” when the couple spent more time with their subsequent spouses than with each other? That's one of the many questions Candy and Ashley address in the second part of this special 2-part episode. And as before, they are honored to include an audio clip from the husband and wife comedy team of Carrie and Jeff Ketterman, who have their own Lucy and Desi tribute show. This concluding episode will delve into the rise and fall of both Desilu and the couple's marriage, the relationships that followed, Lucy's career post I Love Lucy, and the couple's final interactions, including Desi's last message to Lucy: “P.S. I Love Lucy was never just the title.”
This week's chat centers around the second marriages of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. After their marriage ended, they both went on to find love and marry others. Lucy married comedian Gary Morton and Desi married Edith Hirsch. Our episode today really is a chat about what we know about them pre-and post Lucy and Desi as information of their upbringing is scarce. The beautiful thing to see is how happy these second marriages made each of them- even in the undeniable shadow of the juggernaut that was Desilu and the image they created forever. •• Please rate and review our podcast! ••• Connect with all things 'Having A Ball' ••• YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDXuCxbfhUNJzJ_8wMfMD_w/featured Having A Ball Podcast on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Having-a-Ball-Podcast-103319291812682 Having A Ball Podcast on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/havingaballpod/ Erika on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/erikamurrietta/ Erika on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/erika.murrietta.3 Erika on Twitter: https://twitter.com/erikamurrietta Ziva on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/luciana.ehrlinger Ziva on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ziva_e/ Email: havingaballpod@gmail.com ••• Photos: CBS/ Getty/ Desilu Produced by: Erika Murrietta Music provided by: Feather Duster via SilvermanSound https://www.silvermansound.com/free-music/feather-duster

Tom and Greg interview Donnie Norden and we let him talk about his new book "Hole in the Fence" All about his true adventure diary- growing up on the MGM and Desilu backlots. We also attempt to ask a few questions along the way. Buckle up for a great Hollywood back lot story.Hole in the FenceBy: Donnie NordenAll of the stories in this book were written and lived by me, Donnie Norden. I was lucky enough to grow up in the "Heart of Screenland", which is how Culver City identifies itself. My plan is to chronicle and share my stories from this magical time. My true adventure diary- growing up on the MGM and Desilu backlots. Come trespass with me if you dare, through these enchanting, iconic landscapes. Go where cameras don't show you. It's dangerous for sure. You'll need to climb – very rapidly. You could get chased by Security or Guard dogs or arrested or hurt. Still want to come? Once inside you will never want to leave. My pals and I were soldiers in WWII villages, cowboys on the dusty streets of Tombstone, and pirates on the Bounty. On the rare occasions when it rained, we danced in Gene Kelly's footsteps in Singin' in the Rain. From that first time I poked my 10-year-old head through a hole in the tall fence surrounding the MGM backlot near my house in Culver City, I became intrigued, maybe obsessed. I began a coming-of-age journey through the studio backlots and through movies and TV shows past and present – the history, the romance, the fantasy, and how it all looked real, because it was real.I'll take you from sidewalks used in Singing in the Rain to Atlanta, where Gone With the Wind was filmed. We will hang out in Andy Griffith's house, the Walton's house and Andy Hardy's house. We'll watch as filming takes place on films and TV shows of the 70's from our staked out hidden birds-eye view locations. I'll even take you inside the tree stump used in Hogan's Heroes. We'll visit other studios as well like Warner's and Disney.During this decade-long period of trespassing, my success at eluding the guards caused MGM Studios to hire additional guards, known as “Studio Police”, to catch me… “The Phantom,” as I came to be known!A link to purchase Donnie's book on AmazonPodcast music:Intro and ending music Kamihamiha! - Alien Warfare Stems by Kamihamiha (c) copyright 2020 Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution Noncommercial (3.0) license. http://dig.ccmixter.org/files/Kamihamiha/60882extra musichttps://pixabay.com/per Creative Commons Attribution Noncommercial (3.0) license.Podcast ©2022 King Dyro ProductionsMovie Reviews and Serious Nonsense is a King Dyro Production
So there are legends and then there are LEGENDS! This time we meet one of the latter -- Lucille Ball, the first lady of American television comedy. From early stage and movie appearances, Lucy worked her way up the show business ladder. When she was offered the chance to adapt a comedy radio show about an "odd couple" marriage for television she jumped at the chance, provided that her real life husband Desi Arnaz played her spouse. "I Love Lucy" was born and her place in the show business pantheon was secure. But there was so much more, not the least being here role as the first female head of a television production company (Desilu productions). No wonder the National Comedy Center Museum is located in her hometown of Jamestown, NY. As always, find extended clips in the comments at laughtracksradio.com and thanks for sharing our shows.
Mayberry historian Randy Turner returns to discuss "The Andy Griffith Show's" connection to other famous movies and television shows on the backlot owned by RKO Pictures and later Desilu Productions.

Lucy and Desi's studio expands as they buy the RKO lot and produce new shows under the Desilu banner. The strain of running an empire takes its toll, and Desi falls further into gambling, drinking and philandering as a refuge from work. Lucy doubles down on her career, but after shooting a tearful final episode of her signature TV show, her marriage reaches its breaking point. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In this episode, the hosts highlight the many appearances of Hazel Pierce and Bennett Green, sometime character actors and stand-ins for Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, respectively. Hazel and Bennett were usually on the set because of their similar body types to the actors. From the start, Lucy and Desi fight as fiercely as they love. After a spur-of-the-moment elopement, the newlyweds buy a small ranch north of Hollywood and call it “Desilu.” They suffer miscarriages and career setbacks, which causes Desi to take his band on the road – where he frequently cheats on his wife. Lucy considers divorce, but when a TV offer comes in, she uses her stardom to keep Desi by her side. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This week on Episode 528 of Priority One: We delve into the whale-filled washup of the season finale of Lower Decks, Anson Mount discusses literally sitting in the captain's chair, and is that a star on top of the Christmas tree or a Borg baby spray-painted gold? In gaming news, we take a closer look at Star Trek Online's Halloween event, and roll for shield strength in a new release from Star Trek Adventures! TREK IT OUT Edited by Thomas Reynolds What's the Deal With All These Feels, McMahan? By Elio Lleo Mike McMahan, the creator of Star Trek: Lower Decks, isn't resting on his laurels! Nope! After a (generally) well-received Season 2 of the Star Trek animated adventure, McMahan is making the rounds talking about the season–which wrapped last week on October 14th. Sam Stone of Comic Book Resource jumped right in and asked about its unusual villain: the Pakleds. McMahan's explanation: When we were writing the first season, we were in the thick of a pretty dark time across the world–the re-rise of fascism across multiple countries, obviously a lot of politics happening in this country and, not to put too fine a point to it, things that had seemed like a joke in the first place suddenly becoming much more dangerous because we weren't vigilant about it. The Pakleds seemed like a perfect opportunity for that… [This sight gag doesn't work in a podcast app but I stand by it nonetheless–Ed.] Image: ViacomCBS, via Comic Book Resource. Really Be Careful What You Wish For, Mariner What about that incredible cliffhanger? Well according to McMahan, the goal of Season 2 was meant to show Mariner “grappling with themes of betrayal and being left.” Supposedly, Mariner's got some past trauma that we haven't been privy to yet. Nevertheless, McMahan explains that Mariner will start Season 3 struggling to deal with having her mother taken from her. [NOT JUST HER, MIKE–Ed.] When talking with StarTrek.com he explained, “...in the first season we were really creating a family, and in the second season we kind of tested them. And in the finale of the second season, we're dealing with the loss, the family breaking up.” What about our other characters? Well, there seems to be something deeper going on with Rutherford. Something more than just a faulty cybernetic implant. MacMahan tells CBR.com, “... it's about Rutherford. There's stuff about Rutherford that he doesn't even realize and this is his second implant.” They go on to discuss some of the other character dynamics–like the “will they/won't they” tension between Rutherford and Tendi–along with some takeaways McMahan learned from the first two seasons. Mainly that anyone you talk to could secretly be Jeffrey Combs. Anyone. Image: ViacomCBS, via Comic Book Resource. Center Chair, Hot Seat, Call It What You Will By Cat Hough If you have not had a chance to see the new trailer for the upcoming History Channel docu-series The Center Seat: 55 Years of Star Trek, you should definitely trek it out. According to the press release, The Center Seat will be “the ultimate Star Trek documentary that everyone has always wanted, and now they're getting.” Each episode of the series will focus on a different chapter in Star Trek history, starting with the inception of the original Star Trek series at Desilu. But even the trailer features some pretty saucy quotes from the cast and crew of the various shows and movies. https://youtu.be/J_IOHcPuN3Q For example, we hear more from Wil Wheaton, Denise Crosby, Kate Mulgrew and Robert Beltran about their less than ideal working circumstances and for Cirroc Lofton–we hear about his extreme dislike for having to wear the “onesie” uniform while also going through puberty. Nicolas Meyer, writer of The Undiscovered Country, speaks about how much William Shatner hated the script for the movie and the effect that had on, well, pretty much everyone else involved [yeah and you thought Final Frontier was a good idea, now sit down–Ed.] Mmmm. Taste that grain. Image: ViacomCBS, via Deadline. The show doesn't cover any of the new Trek series, but definitely appears to be a comprehensive and detailed exploration of the Star Trek universe over the first 55 years of the show. Created by the Nacelle Company, who also produced Netflix's The Movies That Made Us and The Toys That Made Us, the series is narrated by Dr. Beverly Crusher herself, Gates McFadden, and directed by Nacelle Company founder Brian Volk-Weiss. There's not been an official release date given other than it should premiere sometime this fall. Festivities Will Now Commence By Rosco McQueen It's the most wonderful time of year; when the nanoprobes gently come to rest on ornaments hanging from the boughs of a tree, and assimilation tubules shine in the festive glow of twinkling lights. Christmas is soon upon us, and you can count down to festive assimilation with the 2021 Borg Cube advent calendar. The calendar features 24 Trek gifts behind alcoves (or windows if you prefer) and includes gifts of socks, coasters, and an espresso cup commemorating the first warp speed flight in 2063. It's made by Eaglemoss, the same company who also made a TARDIS-shaped advent calendar for devout Whovians, and is available for purchase now. It could be just the thing to put you in the mood for Picard season 2, with the Borg Queen to feature as part of the time-travelling tale. And speaking of season 2… I hope one of those is an apology to Icheb and Hugh. Image: Eaglemoss. Soji's Sojourn By Rosco McQueen In an interview with Trekmovie.com, Isa Briones spoke about where we find Soji in Picard season 2: a place where she can finally be herself, now that being an android is no longer outlawed. “We're definitely seeing a new kind of level of her evolution as she's coming into her own. She's finally allowed to be who she is and be accepted by the universe, the galaxy, whatever you want to call it. So yeah, we get to see her in this new, more certain place of who she is. And that's very exciting.” The more certain place also has a pool? Jealous. Image: ViacomCBS, via TrekMovie.com The interview covered working under strict COVID conditions, as well as the broader strokes of season two and how it connects to the world we're living in. “There's a big emphasis, I think, on mental health, for sure. We're seeing these characters going through some hard moments and really leaning on each other and prioritizing their own mental health in order to save everyone else. And I think that's a very relatable storyline and a storyline that we need right now.” Your classic Good Cop/Borg Cop dynamic. Image: ViacomCBS, via TrekMovie.com We're All Batty for Strange New Worlds By Rosco McQueen The hype train continues heading towards the station for Strange New Worlds–even Anson Mount starring as Batman in the new DC animated movie Injustice can't stop interviewers from asking about the new series. Either that, or they ask about his starship's extended warranty. Image:ViacomCBS, via SYFY. Mount will play the role of the Dark Knight in the animated adaptation of the video game Injustice, where a traumatized Superman turns evil. In an interview with SYFY Wire, Mount talks about the recording process, and not being the first Christopher Pike to take a turn at Batman. (If you're playing along at home, Bruce Greenwood has voiced Batman a couple of times, and was also the Kelvin Universe's version of one of Starfleet's greatest captains). But when the discussion turned to Strange New Worlds, Mount reinforced the episodic nature of the show, as well as a moment that would give every Trek fan goosebumps. “I was just there as Anson in my own clothes and I sat down in the chair and it was in that moment that I flashed back to playing Star Trek as my make-believe game when I was like eight years old. Something about it was just really strangely emotional for me, and I'm still doing that. I don't even know really how to articulate it, but it's surreal and it's weird... but it's something that I'm so grateful for.” STAR TREK GAMING NEWS Edited by Thomas Reynolds Fanatical Devotion to the Many By Cat Hough Star Trek Online tweeted earlier today that the recent partnership with Fanatical offering in-game bundles to benefit the Boys and Girls Clubs of America raised more than $77,000. Well done, everyone who donated! Cat's Tale of “Cat's Tale” By Cat Hough Well, it's been a week since the “Cat's Tale” Halloween TFO was released, and while it took players a few days to get to know how to navigate the phases of the TFO, it seems that most people are enjoying the mission. As you and your team are first transported to the castle on Pyris VII (or is it Boreth?) the music and lighting definitely set the mood for battling skeletons, witches, skulls and Devidians. In a creepy surprise, you're treated to some Bonnie-Kin voice-over as you make our way downstairs and through the hallways lighting candles–because it's dark in this castle! In the first phase, you are attacked by skeletons, but you can only kill them when they are standing within the circles of candlelight. Some equipment that we highly recommend is the Universal Kit Module - Gravity Containment Unit Mk XII. You can get this kit module as a Tier IV reward from the Discovery reputation; if you use it while you're standing in the circles, then you can just pull those skeletons over to you.
Actress Fiona Vroom's eclectic filmography includes Hell on Wheels, Tim Burton's Big Eyes, a 1950s housewife with superpowers on the way-ahead-of-its-time web series The True Heroines (which she also produced), Kindergarten Cop 2, Bates Motel, the eternally youthful sitcom star Barbara Beaumont in a cult favourite episode of The X-Files, and schoolteacher Miss Gillies on TNT's post-apocalyptic series Snowpiercer. She also has two green-skinned Orions in her filmography – in the “Lolani” episode of the fan-financed Star Trek Continues web series, and also in 2016's Star Trek Beyond – which might seem like a lot of Star Trek for someone who didn't grow up a fan of the show, but makes more sense when you learn that Fiona grew up idolizing Lucille Ball (Trekkies know that Lucille Ball's production company Desilu greenlit the original Star Trek television series).Fiona grew up on boat, and later performed on cruise ships. In recent years, Fiona has expanded into producing her own content while still acting up a storm in film and television projects. In this funny and introspective interview, Fiona reflects on her eclectic filmography, and her journey from a hippie houseboat to the USS Enterprise and Snowpiercer's dystopian train and beyond. Gene Roddenberry catches up with his friend, fellow TV producer Sam Rolfe, in this a letter from November of 1965. In it, Gene talks about the promise of a few pilots he's done such as "The Long Hunt of April Savage," "Police Story" and "Star Trek" which could make it to NBC's schedule the next fall. There's also mention of some Doc Savage/Ocean's Eleven show Bruce Geller is producing for Desilu. He hasn't read it, but the buzz is good. See the documents: http://facebook.com/thetrekfiles

Space 1999 was from the producers of the British TV show UFO, Gerry and Sylvia Andersen. In fact, the show grew out of UFO's unmade second season. It was memorable for its high quality special effects, great music, energetic opening sequence and cast. It featured two familiar American actors, Martin Landau and Barbara Bain, in the starring roles. Both had worked for three years on Star Trek's sister-show at Desilu, Mission: Impossible. Co-hosts Bob Turner and Kelly Casto look back on this short-lived series and share their insights.
Star Trek has these little, unique stories that surround its production. Little things that happened that didn't happen on other shows. This week, we've got another one of those stories. But it's a bigger deal. Co-hosts Bob Turner and Kelly Casto discuss the studio that produced Star Trek, Desilu. When the show first went into production, the studio was owned by Hollywood and TV great, Lucille Ball. Lucy liked Star Trek and saved the show on several occasions. A great example of her loyalty came on the last day of production on the second pilot, Where No Man Has Gone Before. Sand was accumulating on the camera dolly tracks. Lucy grabbed a broom and began sweeping the sand away to keep the production on track. In 1967 Lucy decided to sell Desilu to Paramount which was owned by Gulf+ Western. While it was the end of Desilu, this sale was necessary for the rebirth of Star Trek in the 1970s. Only a studio the size of Paramount had the capital, the vision and the ability to invest in multiple development projects in 1975, '76 and '77 and then be able to see it through to the opening of The Motion Picture in 1979.
