TURKANA FARMS, LLCGreen E-Market Bulletin September 30, 2023Looking at the Sunny Side: Jerusalem Artichokes in Bloom Photo by Mark ScherzerThe Sunny Side of TownHi All, Mark here. With Yom Kippur over and Eric returned to the City, I started this week ready for my first extended stretch in months without company on the farm. I resolved with great energy to make dramatic progress on organizing EVERYTHING.Tuesday, I managed a packed office schedule, plus made progress on mucking the barn and harvesting vegetables. Tuesday night and Wednesday morning I finished updating a several-weeks-overdue chapter of a legal treatise. I followed that with a big feed run (for the critters and me). To be super-efficient, late Wednesday I consolidated two vaccinations (COVID and RSV) into a single drug store visit, and got back to the farm before dusk.Chores that evening went well. After shooing most of the turkeys into their side of the barn through the north door, and heading the sheep off from following the turkeys in to devour their grain, I noticed a blue slate hen outside the east door, strangely immobile. As I approached, I saw that a single length of twine had gotten wrapped around one ankle and several toes, and then around the other ankle. The strand connecting her legs acted like shackles. Unable to advance a single leg independently, she just stood still.Catching her was easy, the rest of the rescue much tougher. Kneeling, I clutched the hen to my chest as she struggled against me. As my right hand held her foot, my left hand carefully sawed through the twine with a pocket knife. Several times, as I tried to wield the knife without cutting her, she broke free. When she did, a large tom began attacking her because she moved so strangely. For all their wonderful qualities, turkeys tend to attack and kill any of their flock who move erratically or otherwise appear to be sick.Ultimately I disentangled her, but I feared that she might have sprained a foot in one of the breakout attempts, making her vulnerable to further attack. She walked gingerly at first, but when I returned from feeding the sheep 20 minutes later, she was moving so normally I couldn't pick her out from flock. I was elated, energized by my success. My energy lasted until I was overtaken by headache, chills, and fatigue late that evening. I regretted getting both vaccinations at once. By Thursday morning I was too weak to carry the newly purchased 50 lb. feed sacks from the car to the barn. I recalled George Atkinson, a retired Livingston dairy farmer, telling us how he had no choice but to milk his cows when he had the flu. Shivering with fever, he would alternatively milk and stick his head out the barn door to vomit. I thought: "George was a stronger man than I."As my energy plummeted, so did my mood. I ruminated about Ukraine, the looming government shutdown, the coming presidential election. I worried about a big check, "in the mail" for the last month, that had not yet arrived. Then, with my head still throbbing Thursday afternoon, Macho Matt linked me to a New York Times article about Germantown (["Germantown, N.Y.: An Upstate Haven That Beckons Creatives"])(https://www.nytimes.com/2023/09/27/realestate/germantown-upstate-ny.html?). Its principal message bummed me out. The backwater I moved to some 23 years ago is now a trendy magnet destination. Having come here to get away from it all, it seems that the "all", celebrities and luxury goods included, has caught up with me.The article flashed me back to shopping with my late partner, Peter, at Marder's, a garden center near our former Sag Harbor "country" home. Dressed in gardening duds rather than the gauzy summer whites featured by most fellow shoppers, we were often mistaken for the help. When a fancy dame imperiously asked "Take these plants out to my car, please," it was a signal moment, helping us realize we did not feel so at home in the Hamptons and should consider moving upstate. To be sure, articles like the one in the Times, meant to appeal to property shoppers from the City, could be written, changing only names and a few details, about dozens of Hudson Valley hamlets. Still, I wondered whether Germantown would soon become too Hamptons-like for me. I happily buy artisanal cheeses and fresh baguettes at Otto's Market. It sure beats the messy store, four iterations ago, I found upon moving here, with produce choice as minimal as the corner bodega where my grandmother shopped in Washington Heights. But Main Street is distinctly up-market. We've got designer goods at what a neighbor calls the Hundred Dollar store, but no place that sells fresh meats or fish, no drug store, no basic hardware. A recent New Yorker cartoon summed up the feeling. Two city visitors phoning from a "Weekend Upstate" main street: "There's four antique stores, three quirky cafés, one shop that sells only socks and another that only sells socks and maple syrup, and nothing opens until noon."Also, I'm glad that the hostility we faced from some quarters as the first gay couple on our street has become less acceptable in a more racially, ethnically and sexually diverse community. But I have no particular desire to live in "Gaymen Town," as one interviewee dubbed it.As my health and mood have recovered, my concerns about this article have diminished. First, I have to acknowledge being part of the very Hamptonization I'm complaining about, by moving here with my city tastes. Gentrifiers don't get to freeze time at their arrival. Also, I think there's too much territory, and too much of a real non-resort economy in the Hudson Valley, for glitzy City culture to completely overwhelm the local one. With old and new populations so evenly balanced, the Democrats running for Town Board tout their collaboration with their Republican fellow board members to solve local problems -- refreshingly different from the take-no-prisoners polarization in Congress. After all our recent rain, I'm looking at the sunny side. Overall, Germantown seems in a pretty good place, and I intend to stick around.WHAT'S AVAILABLE THIS WEEKIn the red meat department, recently back from the processor, frozen lamb:Butterflied legs of lamb $16/lb Rib or Loin chops (packs of 2) $14/lb Small racks of lamb $14/lb Riblets (breast of lamb) $8/lb Lamb shanks (packs of 2) $12/lbIn the greens department:Swiss chard: $3/baggreen zucchini, $1 each Green bell peppers: $1 each Frying peppers: 2 for $1 Jalapeno peppers: 3 for $1 Small hot chili peppers 6 for $1 Horseradish root: $2/lb. George Atkinson still lives in the same house on Locust Place where he was born in 1927. In this episode he shares memories and historical anecdotes spanning nine decades, recounting the city's changes through the Great Depression, World War 2, the economic doldrums of the 70s and 80s, and eventual renaissance. George talks about the factories that employed his father and brothers, two plane crashes on Mt. Beacon that shocked city residents, how it felt to ride the old incline railway and more. And he grapples with the meaning of “progress” as Beacon absorbs new residents and revenues. A must-listen for any fan of local history.
In this episode of Sports the NEMO Way we bring the Las Vegas Raiders to the table for discussion.

When it comes to great teams in Raiders history, many teams come to mind. Between the 70's and 80's, the Oakland Raiders were the winningest team in all of professional sports. However no team epitomized the Oakland Raiders quite like the team of 1976. No team was as crazy off the field, especially with their owner's approval. No team struck quite as much fear into opposing teams on the field. Al Davis and John Madden had a great philosophy for running their team: You can be who you are off the field as long as you win on Sunday. This meant many practices with hangovers, late nights before games, and whatever antics the players brought with them. It also meant a lot of wins. Leading the team at quarterback was Ken "the Snake" Stabler, known for his 4th quarter comebacks and off the field antics. Though not in the typical sense of the word, Stabler was a true leader who had the respect of his teammates and opponents alike. Stabler was blessed with a great set of targets to throw to. Hall of Famer, Fred Biletnikoff, was the prototype hard-nosed possession receiver, while tight end Dave Casper, also a Hall of Famer, was always a big clutch play waiting to happen. However, most teams feared the speedy deep ball artist, Cliff Branch, even more than Casper and Biletnikoff. The offense was also fueled by a great offensive line. Art Shell, Gene Upshaw, and Dave Dalby made up arguably the best left side of any offensive line in the history of the game. This line made life easy for running backs like Clarence Davis and Mark Van Eeghen. The defense struck fear into all opposing offenses. Jack "the Assassin" Tatum and George Atkinson made the hardest hitting safety duo in the game's history, while Hall of Famer Willie Brown and Skip Thomas, a.k.a. Dr. Death, made one of the best cornerback duos ever. As if that secondary wasn't enough, Hall of Famer Ted "the Mad Stork" Hendricks and Phil Villapiano made a linebacking corp no team looked forward to facing. It was also the Raiders first year with the late John Matuszak at defensive end, a giant who was a crazy on the field as he was off of it. The Raiders dominated the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl XI. Oakland's offense put up 32 points, led by the stellar performance of Super Bowl MVP, Fred Biletnikoff. Meanwhile, the Vikings offense was shut out in the first half and managed 14 points in the second half. The Raiders defense showed up in full force as rookie receiver Sammie White found out when Jack Tatum and Skip Thomas knocked his helmet off with a vicious hit. The Oakland Raiders of 1976 were the most feared team of all. They had seven Hall of Famers (if you include John Madden) and quite a few more players who should be in there. They were and still are the true epitome of the Silver and Black.

Conor Tallon and the Crawford Gallery's Assistant Curator Michael Waldron celebrate this week'sWORK OF THE WEEK… cos it's a kind of homecoming, like!Sun sets over a maritime city, as river waters ripple in the wake of a seagoing vessel. Like the tide itself, Paddle Steamer Entering the Port of Cork (1842) is all about comings and goings.Approaching Cork by water was once much more commonplace than today and it was a sight that artist George Mounsey Wheatley Atkinson (1806-1884) knew well. A native of Cobh, he grew up in Cork Harbour and spent his early career at sea as a ship's carpenter. Upon his return, he became Government Surveyor of Shipping and Emigrants, as well as a self-taught painter. In this warm and welcoming painting, the artist depicts a paddle steamer making its way upriver to the Port of Cork. The historic Bonded Warehouses may be picked out at the centre of the scene, while dozens of masts break the skyline on both channels of the river, emphasising the importance of the harbour to the city's commerce, prosperity, and identity.Flanking the river on either side, the church steeples of St Anne's, Shandon and St Patrick's (right) and old St Fin Barre's Cathedral and city hall (left) can be readily identified. The fine offices of the St George Steam Packet Company (Penrose House) can also be glimpsed between moored vessels at Penrose Quay (centre right).Wherever you may be this festive season, we wish you all safe harbour, fair winds and following seas.Paddle Steamer Entering the Port of Cork (1842) is featured in STATIO BENE: Art and Ireland's Maritime Haven until April 2021. Conor Tallon spoke to Dr Michael Waldron from the Crawford Gallery about the week's work of the week:George Atkinson's Shannon Scheme No. 2: The Culvert, 1929, etching on paper, 45.5 x 50.4 cm. Presented, 2015.We're all about forward motion with this WORK OF THE WEEK!Shannon Scheme No. 2: The Culvert (1929) is one of a series of etchings by George Atkinson in the collection that document Ireland's major civil engineering project of the 1920s.Begun in 1925, construction of the Shannon Hydro-Electric Scheme at Ardnacrusha, County Clare was completed within seven years of the formation of the Irish Free State. A potent symbol of independence and modernity, it also generated huge employment and interest from the public and artists alike, including George Atkinson and Seán Keating.Derived from drawings the artist made on site c.1927, Atkinson's series – which also includes Shannon Scheme No. 1: Keeper Mountain and Shannon Scheme No. 3: The Excavations – had been commissioned by the Irish government. Collectively they demonstrate the sheer scale and ambition of the project, which would see the formation of the ESB and culminate in the harnessing of Ireland's longest river. Guest Bio:Jordan Romero is an American mountain climber who, on May 22, 2010, became the youngest person to climb Mount Everest. He was 13 years 10 months 10 days old when he reached the summit. Romero was accompanied by his father Paul Romero, his step-mother Karen Lundgren, and three Sherpas, Ang Pasang Sherpa, Lama Dawa Sherpa, and Lama Karma Sherpa. The previous record for youngest to climb Everest was held by Ming Kipa of Nepal who was 15 years old when she reached the summit in 2003. He was inspired to climb the tallest mountains of each continent when he saw a painting in the hallway of his school that had the seven continents' highest mountains. He climbed the Vinson Massif in December 2011, breaking the record of George Atkinson being the youngest climber in the world to complete the Seven Summits, at the age of 15 years, 5 months, 12 days. It is likely that, barring changes in national policies, Romero's record will remain unbeaten, as Nepal does not issue licences for under-16s to climb Everest, and subsequent to Romero's ascent, China introduced similar restrictions on the Tibetan side.
11/15/2018 34th Annual Houston Interfaith Thanksgiving Service Theme: "Care for Creation" Leading up to the 2019 Rothko Chapel Symposium on Climate Change, the 34th Annual Houston Interfaith Thanksgiving Service will focus on the environment. Leaders and members of nine different faith communities across the city will come together to share prayers, readings, chants and reflections on the theme of “care for creation.” This year's service will include Baha'i, Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Jain, Jewish, Muslim, Sikh, and Zoroastrian traditions. A reception follows the program. The service started 34 years ago in response to the bombing of a storefront mosque. After helping to raise money to support the mosque's repairs, the Annual Thanksgiving Service co-founders George Atkinson and Garland Pohl wanted to find a way for different faith organizations to come together, as thanksgiving is a common value shared by all the major world religions. Initially, participants represented Judaism, Islam and Christianity, but within three years, Buddhists, Sikhs, Zoroastrians, Baha’i, Hindus and Jains joined the service. Raider Nation Podcast - Oakland Raiders News and Opinion with Raider Greg
TOPICS: Segment #1: "Raider Nation not sure what to think of first Free Agency Moves" We lost Veldheer, Houston and Jennings. We almost signed Saffold to a big contract, then he fails his physical. We sign Justin Tuck, Lamarr Woodley, Antonio Smith, Tarell Brown, and Usama Young. What do you think of these developments? Does Reggie have a good plan? Many Raiders fans are unhappy. Some are supportive and ask for patience. Raider Greg is flipped out. We hear Raider Greg's opinions plus a few interviews first aired on the Raiders flagship station 95.7 "The Game". We hear from new Raiders Justin Tuck and Lamarr Woodley. We also hear from Raiders LB Sio Moore and get his feelings on these new teammates. We also hear the opinion of former Raiders great George Atkinson as well as ESPN's Stephen A. Smith. Segment #2: “The Boneline” Voicemail Segment You can call in to the Boneline and get on the podcast yourself. Toll-Free 1-800-620-7181. Try to keep your call around 2-3 minutes long. If we get a lot of calls we may not be able to air all of them, so make them good. Preference may be given to first time callers. Sorry if your call is not aired. Please call back to get on another show. This week’s callers: 01. Pennsylvania Raider 02. Raider Nation Joe 03. Raider Slim 04. Moneyman has Spoken Raider 05. Episode #82 - 10/11/12 Raiders legends event at the Sheraton Hotel in Atlanta the night before the Raiders played the Falcons. Autograph signing and social event, which was followed by a roundtable session. That was followed by a Raiders rally party which we will cover in our next video coming out soon. Raider Greg interviewed Raiders legends George Atkinson and Ted Hendricks. He also spoke with the president of the Atlanta Raiders booster club Clint Gharib. You can visit their website here: http://www.atlraiderfans.com/ Here is an interview with Clint on "Behind the Shield" from March 2010: http://www.raiders.com/media-vault/videos/Behind-the-Shield-Online-March-17/a69e8985-bcfd-4f44-b2c9-e45d7d252e76
Episode 79 - 10/14/12 Oakland Raiders @ Atlanta Falcons - Raider Nation Invades Atlanta The pregame tailgate party hosted by the Atlanta Raiders Booster Club. The party began at 9am in Centennial Olympic Park, just a few blocks from the Georgia Dome. The Raiders led at halftime, but the Falcons took a late 7 point lead. The Raiders tied the game 20-20 with only 40 seconds remaining, but that was enough for the Falcons to get in position for a game winning 55 yard field goal. A disappointing yet exciting game for Raider Nation, and it does give us reason to believe our team is headed in the right direction. We will be posting more video from this weekend, including the Saturday night Altanta Boosters party, interviews with Raiders legends George Atkinson and Ted Hendricks, and more.....with your host Raider Greg.
