Cahli Thomas was a loving father and son whose life was senselessly taken on October 16, 2023. Cahli is survived by his beloved mother, Carla, and his 7-year old daughter, Nova. In addition to being a loving father and son, Cahli was a dedicated and valued member of the Department of Energy and Environment family. Both in his role at DOEE and in his personal life, he worked hard for his community. He supported DC High School students by hosting the annual EV Grand Prix competition, which saw high school students build and race their own electric vehicles. He loved basketball, playing as the team captain at Gonzaga College High School and in college at Delaware State. In this episode, Gretchen Crowder interviews Stephen Szolosi. Stephen lives with his wife Amy and their dog Grover in Oakland, California following a move from the east coast last August. After twelve years supporting campus ministry at Gonzaga College High School, he began this past Fall as the Director of Spiritual Formation at the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley. His own formation began in Ohio as one of eight children in a Catholic home that sat catty-corner to the parish church. He has graduate degrees in theology from St. John's University in Collegeville and in comparative literature from Stony Brook University. Here in the American Jesuit universe, we're in two parallel holy seasons at the same time: Lent and March Madness. Nine Jesuit teams between the women's and men's tournaments are in the Big Dance this year, and you can read all about them on our website at Jesuits.org/basketball. Today's guest didn't quite make it to the NCAA tournament this year, but he led one of the biggest success stories in all of college basketball this season. And this was his first year as a head coach at any level. Keith Urgo is the head coach of the Fordham Rams men's team – and the Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year. Fordham put up a record of 25 wins and 8 losses this season; the last time Fordham won this many games in a season was all the way back in 1991. Coach Urgo has deep Jesuit roots: He went to Gonzaga College High School in Washington, DC, then played basketball and lacrosse at Fairfield University. After college, he spent time working with a nonprofit organization called PeacePlayers, which uses basketball to bring people together in some of the most divided countries on Earth. He's a fascinating guy and you'll want to keep your eye on him in future years. In June 2021, as part of back-to-back commencement exercises, Gonzaga’s 36th President, Fr. Stephen Planning took the opportunity at his final graduation ceremony to award a special Doctorate for the first time during his tenure. As many of you know, Gonzaga College High School’s historic charter allows for the awarding of honorary degrees. The recipient: Gabe Smith '54, the first African-American to graduate from Gonzaga. This week, we interviewed Vlad Cartwright of 720 Strategies. Vlad leads and develops national, regional and local campaigns and public awareness programs for some of America's largest trade associations and political action committees. 720 Strategies is a public relations and public affairs firm based in Washington, DC with an 18-year track record of service to its corporate and trade association clients.  720 Strategies was founded by Pam Fielding, and was originally named "E-Advocates" Vlad started his career in 1989 working on Capitol Hill He then moved on to a trade organization, working in the healthcare space on grassroots outreach. Vlad attended American University. He originally began attending full time, but transitioned to part-time after getting a position as a scheduler/body man for a congressman. Vlad went to Gonzaga College High School 720 focuses roughly 70% of its time on healthcare issues 720 has leveraged video in an increasing amount with the advent and popularity of social media and streaming services Vlad has seen an increasing amount of work shifting to state capitols from Congress 720 works closely with state lobbyists in each state that they're active, relying on them for guidance and advice One suggestion for state-level lobbyists: Don't be afraid to try new things from an advocacy perspective - i.e. grassroots and proactive communications Advice for young folks trying to get into the business: Work hard - happy hour can wait. Brian Gilmore, Washington, D.C., poet and longtime public-interest lawyer, is the author of three collections of poetry including his latest, We Didn't Know Any Gangsters (Cherry Castle Publishing, 2014), which was nominated for an NAACP Image Award and a Hurston/Wright Award. He is a Cave Canem Fellow and Kimbilio Fellow and twice recipient of a Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Award (2001 and 2003). He currently teaches social justice law at Michigan State University. Celebrating the release of Little Patuxent Review's Summer 2014 issue, LPR is excited to host a reading and conversation with four writers. Joseph Ross, Alan King, Michael Brokos, and Tafisha Edwards will read a selection of original work published in LPR and other journals, followed by a panel discussion on the role of small press journals in the career of poets. His debut collection of poems, Drift, was published by Aquarius Press in 2012.Michael Brokos received an MFA in poetry from Boston University in 2012.  He is the recent recipient of a Bakeless Fellowship from the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference and the Camargo Foundation, during which he spent the month of May 2014 in southern France.  His work appears in Little Patuxent Review, Hobart, Salamander, Sixfold, and other journals.  He lives in Baltimore, where he works as a writer and editor.Tafisha Edwards is a Guyanese Canadian poet, Cave Canem fellow, and graduate of the Jiménez-Porter Writers House. She lives and works in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area after earning her B.A. in Journalism from the University of Maryland, College Park. Piotr Gwiazda has published two books of poetry, Messages (2012) and Gagarin Street (2005), as well as a critical study, James Merrill and W.H. Auden: Homosexuality and Poetic Influence (2007). His translation of Polish poet Grzegorz Wróblewski’s book of prose poems, Kopenhaga, is forthcoming from Zephyr Press. He was Writer in Residence at the James Merrill House in Stonington in the fall of 2008.
