Today, we're traveling back to 1997 for a conversation with one of the most distinctive and rebellious filmmakers of the indie film scene—Greg Araki. By the time Nowhere hit theaters in ‘97, Araki had already made a name for himself with his bold, surreal, and unapologetically queer storytelling. As the final entry in his “Teen Apocalypse Trilogy,” Nowhere pushed boundaries with its wild mix of sex, drugs, existential dread, and alien abductions—all wrapped in the signature Araki aesthetic.
Independent filmmaker Zach Clark joins to discuss the work of punk auteur legend Jon Moritsugu and his 1994 cult favorite Mod Fuck Explosion. A riff on classic Hollywood tales like West Side Story, the film is brash, outrageous, occasionally reprehensible, and is (in Zach's words) less about teen angst so much as it simply *is* teen angst manifested onscreen. We first discuss the singular style of Moritsugu as filmmaker, his movies' no-budget charms, and how their hyper-stylized aesthetic, formalism, and performances turn the film's budgetary limitations into distinctive attributes that call attention to the their own artifice. Then, we discuss Mod Fuck Explosion's brilliance as a totem of 90s teen ennui and an interrogation of Moritsugu's career-long targets such as the prison of domesticity, anti-Asian racism, and gender roles. Finally, we discuss why the film's of Moritsugu transcend basic descriptiors like satire and camp, embracing genuine sincerity and uncovering deep emotional truths with a commendable level of vulnerabiltiy. On the back half of the show, we spend some time discussing Zach's new film The Becomers, a 21st century take on science fiction B-movies about body snatching aliens finding love in the time of COVID. The Becomers is out on VOD today! Career Q&A with Christopher Meloni. Moderated by Jenelle Riley, Variety. Washington, D.C. native Christopher Meloni studied acting at the University of Colorado, Boulder, before graduating with a degree in History. He worked in construction and as a bouncer before breaking into acting, studying his craft in New York with legendary teacher Sanford Meisner. His television breakout role was on “NYPD Blue,” opposite Kim Delaney. That led to being cast on HBO's gritty landmark series “Oz,” playing the psychotic, bisexual serial killer, ‘Chris Keller.' In 1999, Meloni landed his starring role on the popular and long-running NBC series “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” with the actor working in both series simultaneously until “Oz” ended its 6 year run in 2003. He continued on “Law & Order: SVU” for twelve seasons, earning an Emmy nomination for his performance as Detective Elliot Stabler. Meloni then returned to HBO in a pivotal arc as the head of the Vampire Authority, ‘Roman,' in Alan Ball's wildly popular drama, “True Blood;” and as Julie Louis-Dreyfus' trainer, ‘Ray,' in “Veep.” Meloni is currently co-starring in the Netflix limited event series, “Wet Hot American Summer” which is the prequel to the cult film in which he also co-starred. Meloni's other big screen credits include the August 2015 Sony Classics release, "Diary of a Teenage Girl " with Kristen Wiig; Greg Araki's "White Bird in a Blizzard"; "Sin City: A Dame to Kill For"; "Man of Steel"; "42"; "They Came Together"; "Small Time"; the Terry Gilliam films "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" and "Twelve Monkeys"; the Wachowskis' first film "Bound"; the romantic comedy blockbuster "Runaway Bride"; "Nights in Rodanthe"; and such cult favorites as "Wet Hot American Summer", "Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle", and its first sequel, "Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay".

“All the things the homos like, I hate” can be etched on each our tombstones. The Ghost Kino Institute for Gays Who Can't Do Film Analysis Good (And Want to Learn How to Do Other Stuff Good Too) go in on Greg Araki's seminal 93 flick Totally Fucked Up, a representation of queer youth in 90s LA that — shockingly — has a class angle to it? (Who would've thought the queers also have to pay their rent what a concept). Along the way we'll talk about how non-gay-best-friend qualities are cast aside by str*ghts, the Modernist outlook in the wake of the AIDS crisis that informed this film, and the importance of chosen family (Astro and Eire if you read this episode description I include to two of y'all in that designation btw love you both). Twenty-four years ago today, the film Nowhere premiered. It is a black comedy drama, the third in Greg Araki's Teen Apocalypse trilogy and described as ‘Beverly Hills 90210 on acid'. The film follows a day in the lives of a group of Los Angeles college students and the strange lives that they lead. If reading who is in the cast isn't enough incentive to watch this movie, I don't know what is. The soundtrack is a perfect group of songs that encapsulates that late 90s angst. You need to see this movie. This episode is also available as a blog post. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/waldina/message
After a few episodes in a row featuring queer adjacent stories made for straight audiences, we're taking a look back at the New Queer Cinema. In the early 90's, filmmakers like Gus Van Sant and Greg Araki reclaimed the road movie for queer audiences. These two tales of narcoleptic hustlers and murderers on the run tapped into a queer culture ignored and left for dead by their government. They take very different stylistic approaches, with wildly varying budgets, but each one captures the early 90's in their own captivating way.
