He also recounts how the popularity of Arthur Fiedler was enhanced even further by the "Evening at Pops" television series. Morris details the process of selecting John Williams as Fiedler's successor, explaining that Williams was chosen for his musical integrity and knowledge of the symphony orchestra. Furthermore, the interview addresses the crucial dynamic between management, the music director, and the board of directors, which Morris refers to as the "Bermuda Triangle.” Morris suggests that this structure can function perfectly if the right people are in those roles and are bound by a common vision. He also emphasizes that having a collaborative culture is essential, but that collaborative decision-making should be avoided. Morris stresses the importance of clear lines of authority and not settling for "good enough" when hiring. He also shares that when hiring he uses Jim Collins' three C's: competence, character, and chemistry. These points underscore the need for strong leadership and a shared vision in any successful organization. Morris also touches on the importance of thoughtful programming. He humorously mentions his collection of "dumb programs" and emphasizes the importance of carefully considering the combination of pieces in a concert. He contrasts examples of bad programming with one of his favorites, a concert he organized with Christoph von Dohnányi, which combined pieces by Ligeti, Wagner, and Bruckner. Wine bar hosts monthly open mic Along with Beaklyn, Baby Brooklyn and Brooklyn North (aka BroNo or NoBro), Beacon recently acquired another nickname: Broadway North. Singers gotta sing and there's enough critical mass that the Broadway in Beacon open mic fills Reserva Wine Bar on Main Street each month with a raucous crowd raring to revel in musical theater - tap dancing included. "There's been a real shift in work-life balance and theater folks don't have to suffer for their art anymore by living in tiny boxes," said co-host and pianist Will Reynolds. "People try out for Broadway shows from all over the country [virtually] and, if they get the part, they move. We in Beacon don't have to relocate." Jen Malenke devised the idea for a Broadway satellite after attending an event at Reserva at which the performer invited people to come onstage and sing. Malenke took inspiration from Manhattan piano bars that allow singers to hand their sheet music to an in-house accompanist and put over one tune. In Beacon, that pianist is Reynolds, who pulls off the task well. "I know 60 to 70 percent of the songs," he said. "The rest, I'm just going for it." The evening unfolds with an element of improvisation. Though the hosts map out the pace, they will shift acts on the fly. "We alternate the ballads with the up-tempo songs and also mix young people with older folks," said Malenke. "We don't want four ringers in a row, so we spread them out. We have these tentpole moments, but we're storytelling and don't want to stay in one mood forever." After an opening number, Act 2 kicks off with a Mad Libs, which takes a beloved number and recasts key words in the lyrics (often in ribald fashion). Everyone belts out the final version. Last month, Reynolds performed a localized take of "On Broadway," by The Drifters, that referenced the waterfall, the dummy light and climbing Mount Beacon, "but just don't go on the weekend / because the city folk will all be there." He conducted folks to echo the phrase "in Beacon" after the main "on Broadway" refrain. During the show, Malenke zipped around as MC and cheerleader. Beyond doling out high-fives, she joined the harmony parts, adjusted the microphone mid-song for performers, turned sheet music pages and handed Reynolds glasses of white wine (which he kept by his feet). She also sang two tunes and introduced the month's special guest: Rueby Wood, a fellow cast member from the first national tour of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory that began in 2018. Truth be told, booze lubricates much of the revelry. Reserva "is usually closed Wednesdays, but this is one of their highest revenue nights," said Malenke. "The best thing is that local people can walk home." Joanne Tetteris, who lives in Beacon, dressed like a performer but didn't sing. "It's nice to be able to see something local like this on a weeknight," she said. Ken Martinez and Janet Rossbach came from Newburgh. "I laughed a lot, and it was a phenomenally good night out," said Martinez. "I didn't think they'd be this good." On the small stage by the door, Connor Bond and Ali Grieb improvised a ditty about gonorrhea and falling in love at Target. "It was everything I dreamed of and more," said Malenke from the wings. "I'm crying over here." In between an appearance by Mylee Rose, a high school student from Lagrangeville, and ringer Carrie Gibson, who held out her last note for dramatic effect, Gianna Cusato pulled on tap shoes and shuffled her feet to "I Got Rhythm." Shooting sideways glances at the music stand and sometimes closing her eyes during a rendition of "She Used to Be Mine," by Sara Bareilles, speech therapist Daria Gates, whose office is down the block, nailed the high note at the end and sent the audience into a frenzy. Brian Waite, who performed "No Time at All" from Pippin and received raucous applause, thanked the crowd and joked that "it's nice to be in Beacon, the heart of Broadway." BIO: Legendary recording artist and ground-breaking entertainer Tony Orlando got an early start in show business, reaching national charts at the age of 16 with his recordings of “Halfway to Paradise” and “Bless You.” Orlando became the first vocal artist to sign with Epic Records. The young entertainer continued to set records, eventually becoming one of the youngest vice presidents in the history of CBS Records. After agreeing to record a demo record for a song called “Candida the song became a surprise hit, launching Orlando into the spotlight. Tony Orlando continued producing hit songs, releasing the #1 single “Knock Three Times” in 1971. The single became the top song of 1971, selling over six million copies worldwide. In 1973, Orlando recorded perhaps his most famous song, “Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree.” The hit stayed at #1 for a year and soon became an anthem of hope and renewal for American veterans from the Vietnam War to Desert Storm. By 1974, Tony Orlando had developed his very own variety show. Led by Orlando himself along with Telma Hopkins and Joyce Vincent Wilson, the show was the first multi-ethnic variety show on television, running for four seasons. Orlando's career spans over 60 years. Anthony Roth Costanzo is one of the world's most in demand countertenors who has recently completed a run of Philip Glass' opera Akhnaten at English National Opera, performing the title role of the legendary Egyptian king. Synopsis Imagine the cocktail party bragging rights you'd have if you had attended the first night of “Girl Crazy,” a musical that opened in New York on today's date in 1930. That show marked the Broadway debut of Ethel Merman, and co-starred Ginger Rogers. But that's just for starters… The pit orchestra that night included Benny Goodman, Gene Krupa, Glenn Miller, Jimmy Dorsey, and Jack Teagarden – gentlemen who would all go on to become famous band leaders in their own right. Speaking of band leaders, for the opening night of “Girl Crazy,” the show's composer, George Gershwin himself, was there conducting that all-star ensemble. For his part, Gershwin recalled: “With the exception of some dead head friends of mine, especially the critics, I think the notices, especially of the music, were the best I have ever received.” Gershwin was right: “Girl Crazy” included two songs that quickly became classics: “I Got Rhythm” and “Embraceable You.” The show ran for 272 performances – an impressive statistic in the first year of the Great Depression, and Hollywood produced not one but TWO cinematic versions of the show in 1932 and 1943. With her powerful, belting voice and inimitable stage presence, Ethel Merman became one of the biggest stars on Broadway and the queen of musical comedy. She made one visit to Suspense as a singer paired with a homicidal partner in "Never Follow a Banjo Act" (originally aired on CBS on February 1, 1954). He began his career as a song plugger but soon started composing Broadway theater works with his brother Ira Gershwin and with Buddy DeSylva. He moved to Paris intending to study with Nadia Boulanger, but she refused him. He subsequently composed An American in Paris, returned to New York City and wrote Porgy and Bess with Ira and DuBose Heyward. One of the last British Invasion groups of the 1960s, and one of the few grroups that never disbanded, was Manchester's own The Hollies.  Alan Clarke and Graham Nash founded the group, and after a few iterations joined with Vic Steele (lead guitar), Eric Haydock (bass), and Don Rathbone (drums) in a group known as the Deltas.  They would first be known as The Hollies at a Manchester gig in December 1962, taking the name from both the Christmas season and in admiration of Buddy Holly.  By 1967, Steele had been replaced by Tony Hicks, and Rathbone by Bobby Elliott.  Eric Haydock would be replaced by Ernie Calvert in 1966.The Hollies' Greatest Hits was released in May 1967 after their fifth studio album, though they had only achieved major U.S. success in 1966.  This album showcases their three-part harmonies and the sound reminiscent of many early 60's British Invasion bands.  They did covers and songs from other writers at first - a common practice in bands at the time - before becoming comfortable writing their own material.  Though The Hollies had many decades more music and hits to come, Graham Nash would depart a few months after this Greatest Hits collection was released to join his new band, Crosby, Stills & Nash.  This collection is a good representation of the early days of this iconic band. Bus StopThis was the first U.S. top 10 hit by the group, released in June 1966.  Songwriter Graham Gouldman wrote this piece using opening lyrics first written by his father, playwright Hyme Gouldman.  Graham Gouldman would later be a member of the band 10cc.On a CarouselClarke, Nash, and Hicks penned this song.  These three would form the core of the songwriting for The Hollies after they began writing on their own.  Previous hits were from Graham Gouldman or covers.  It was originally released in February 1967 as a single, and captures the spirit of young love.Look Through Any WindowThis one hit the charts as a single in the US in September 1965, and was their first top 40 hit. “Look through any window, yeah, what do you see?  Smiling faces all around, rushin' through the busy town.”Stop, Stop, StopReleased in the US by Imperial records in October 1966, this track has a distinctive sound with a banjo as lead instrument and employing a tape delay to give it an eastern feel.  It was inspired when the band was taken to a strip club for the first time.  “Stop, stop stop all the dancing.  Give me time to breathe.” ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the motion picture “To Sir With Love”Sidney Poitier stars and singer Lulu contributes this song (and makes her film debut) in this drama about social and racial issues in an inner city school. STAFF PICKS:“Creeque Alley” by The Mamas & The PapasRob kicks off the staff picks with an autobiographical piece on how The Mamas & The Papas formed.  The line “and no one's getting fat 'cept Mama Cass” could refer to Cass Elliott's weight, ...or to her financial situation, as she was making more money than the rest of the band!“I Got Rhythm” by The HappeningsBruce takes us way back with a show tune originally composed by George and Ira Gershwin in 1930.  The Happenings were known for playing classic songs in a sunshine pop style.  “I Got Rhythm” would make it to number 3 on the US charts with this version.“From the Underworld” by The HerdWayne's staff pick features a 17 year old Peter Frampton!  This song was the first UK hit by the group, and was inspired by the story of Orpheus and his flight from Hades.  The psychedelic tune was payed on Pirate Radio in the UK, where radio broadcasts were conducted from ship to avoid the BBC.“Girl, You’ll Be a Woman Soon” by Neil DiamondBrian's pick is a hit from Neil Diamond addressing the female fans at his concerts directly.  Diamond was a sex symbol at the time, and his audience skewed female, as demonstrated by the apparel thrown up on stage.   LAUGH TRACK:“Ding Dong the Witch Is Dead” by The Fifth EstateThis may be more novelty than comedy, but your ears do no deceive you.  That's right, this song from "The Wizard of Oz" made it into the charts this month via this cover by The Fifth Estate.

The Hot Box 49 is an advanced peak behind the curtain of an upcoming concert from the RTE Concert Orchestra featuring a feast of George Gershwin music cantering on the first ever live performance of the Concert Version of the Armstrong / Ella orchestration “Porgy & Bess”. The recreation of Russel Garcia's entire score has been achieved by Derry born, award-winning jazz trumpeter and arranger Ryan Quigley. The world premiere of this concert will be performed by RTÉ Concert Orchestra on the 11th of September in The National Concert Hall in Dublin. The Ella & Louis parts will be delivered by Nicola Emmanuelle (‘the real deal' – Time Out) and five-time British Jazz Awards winner Enrico Tomasso – who as a child actually knew Louis Armstrong. Using breath in singing has so many facets and parts that we need to be aware of executing. What’s that making its way down Hollywood Blvd to Carthay Circle in Disney’s California Adventure? That’s nothing but an old jalopy, or is it?  That old jalopy makes its way down Hollywood Blvd multiple times a day.  The five jazz performers and one powerful vocalist riding along are none other than the Five and Dime. The Five and Dime fit the 1920s theme of Buena Vista Street perfectly and set the stage for your day at Disney’s California Adventure.  The 15-minute show has been performed daily since the re-dedication of DCA in 2012.  The group sold everything they had back in Chicago, purchased the jalopy, and drove all the way to Hollywood to make it big in the movie business.  Dime, the singer, is quick to drop her microphone and start the jazz with 1920s and 30s classics like “I Got Rhythm” and “Ain’t We Got Fun”.  All that fun proves too much for Goofy to resist joining in on the action.  As the story goes, the Five fellas from Chicago and the female vocalist named Dime hit it big when they met a fellow midwestern dreamer named Walt Disney! These performances of Charlie Christian are found on Vinyl LP Record compilations of his recordings between 1939 and 1941. Often you will hear remarks from today's jazz, pop, blues, even rock guitarists ….like Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, and Eric Clapton ….that their BIGGEST INFLUENCES came from two or three early guitarists --- DJANGO REINHARDT, LONNIE JOHNSON and CHARLIE CHRISTIAN. You will hear this many times. The former, DJANGO REINHARDT, the BELGIAN jazz guitarist, is well known for his EUROPEAN style of jazz, the so-called "HOT JAZZ" or "GYPSY JAZZ" or "ROMANI" style of music, that has become a living musical tradition within FRENCH GYPSY CULTURE. DJANGO's "GYPSY JAZZ" style is widely emulated by today's jazz guitarists. DJANGO lived 43 years, between 1910 and 1953, and some of his most popular ORIGINAL compositions, such as MINOR SWING, DAPHNE, BELLEVILLE, DJANGOLOGY, SWING 42 and NUAGES…are jazz standards today. DJANGO REINHARDT is widely recorded, with SIX recordings during his lifetime, and a total of 23 recordings all together, many of which are compilations of his works. So DJANGO as a cultural influence, is a fascinating subject in and of itself, and will be the subject of an upcoming VINYL VIBRATIONS podcast! LONNIE JOHNSON, ANOTHER Jazz and blues guitarist, is credited with PIONEERING the ROLE of jazz guitar …..and for being perhaps the FIRST recorded case of playing single-note guitar solos. He had an extensive discography and lived to be 71, so Lonnie Johnson is well recognized, having being extensively recorded AND after having a long-standing career, performing as late as 1966, or at age 67 years. But WHAT ABOUT THIS THIRD INFLUENTIAL GUITARIST …the AMERICAN guitarist CHARLIE CHRISTIAN…NAMED SO OFTEN…..OF WHOM WE KNOW SO LITTLE ??? CHARLIE CHRISTIAN. Who is that??? What are his songs? What was his guitar style? How can CHRISTIAN be cited so often as a strong influence, when there are relatively few recordings to play? IS CHARLIE CHRISTIAN LOST IN JAZZ MUSIC HISTORY? I am going to bring to light some of this lesser known work of Charlie Christian, and feature some of the first recorded examples of his jazz guitar. It's time for our regular Thursday visit with Midday's peripatetic theater critic, J. Wynn Rousuck, who joins Tom in the studio today with her review of An American in Paris, the touring stage adaptation of the Gershwin-inspired 1951 film musical. The Tony Award-winning production premiered on Broadway in 2015, hit the road in 2016, and is just now making its local stop at Baltimore's Hippodrome Theater.Like the classic Vincente Minnelli film -- which starred Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron and won six Academy Awards, including Best Picture -- this award-winning stage adaptation tells the story of an American World War II veteran and aspiring painter who lingers in the newly-liberated Paris of 1945 and falls in love with a young French woman. Also like the film, the stage version weaves their complicated romance through a rich tapestry of George Gershwin's brilliant orchestral works -- including the titular An American in Paris, the Concerto in F and a Second Rhapsody/Cuban Overture medley -- and more than a dozen of the incomparable songs that George and his brother Ira Gershwin penned during the 1920s and 30s. Show numbers include I Got Rhythm, S'Wonderful, But Not for Me, Stairway to Paradise, and They Can't take That Away. And as in the Gene Kelly-choreographed film, a lot of that great music is set wonderfully to dance.An American in Paris is directed and choreographed at the Hippodrome by Christopher Wheeldon, who guides a 30-member cast that (on opening night) featured Kyle Robinson (alternating for McGee Maddox) in the role of American soldier Jerry Mulligan, and Allison Walsh as Lise Dassin, the young French woman who captures Jerry's heart. Deena Rosenberg, 2017 Michael Strunsky, 2015 An interview with Deena Rosenberg, author of “Fascinating Rhythm: The Collaboration of George and Ira Gershwin” and Michael Strunsky, nephew of Ira Gershwin, recorded August 14, 1992, hosted by Richard Wolinsky with guest host Alex Davis. In 1992, as part of the KPFA Morning Concert series, Richard Wolinsky interviewed both Deena Rosenberg and Michael Strunsky, co-hosted with San Francisco concert pianist Alex Davis, who prepared excerpts of Gershwin's work for the show. A full-scale radio documentary was planned following the program, and a handful of interviews recorded before the project was abandoned. One of those interviews, with Michael Strunsky's father, English Strunsky, was aired for the first time on August 29, 2016, and the complete one-hour version was uploaded as a Radio Wolinsky podcast. But the project began with this program, originally a live two-hour radio broadcast featuring songs and original recordings from the Gershwin archive. For copyright reasons, outside of short segments performed by Alex Davis, those recordings have been removed. Some of the dialogue has been tightened, but the result is what was heard from the KPFA studios that morning. George Gershwin was born in 1898 and his brother Ira two years earlier. At the age of 15 he took a job as a song-plugger, playing other people's songs on a piano for Remick Music Publisher for the sale of their sheet music. His first composed song was published when he was 17, and at 21 he scored his first big hit, Swanee. But it wasn't until 1924 when he teamed up with his brother Ira as lyricist that George Gershwin became, what we might call a superstar, which he remained until his untimely death from a brain tumor in 1937. Ira Gershwin, who went on to work with other composers until he retired in the early 1960s, died in 1983. Through a search, songs from the various shows mentioned in this interview, as well as individual songs, can be found on You Tube, in particular George Gershwin's performance of Variations on I Got Rhythm from his radio broadcast, and Oscar Levant's recording of the Second Rhapsody. By far the bulk of Gershwin’s output is devoted to songs – more than five hundred of them, most of which come from his more than four dozen works for the musical stage. Two of these stage works are operas – the short Blue Monday Blues and the full-length Porgy and Bess. Gershwin also wrote music for four films (Shall We Dance is the most famous), a few piano pieces and a handful of concert works: Rhapsody in Blue, An American in Paris, Cuban Overture, Concerto in F, Second Rhapsody and Variations on “I Got Rhythm.” Gershwin’s style is derived from the American soul and spirit. “Epitomizing the Jazz Age in every pore of his suave being,” writes critic Alex Ross, “Gershwin was the ultimate phenomenon in early-twentieth century American music, the man in whom all the discordant tendencies of the era achieved sweet harmony.” Many of Gershwin’s works are infused with jazz, and if he can be said to have made one single overriding accomplishment in his life, it was to create a bridge between jazz and the concert hall. - Robert Markow

Sonny Stitt was in many ways a misunderstood Jazz giant and he, at least as far as his alto saxophone work is concerned, had to live with being referred to as a Bird imitator. Stitt had the same musical influences as Charlie Parker but despite some surface similarities, they were very different players. Stitt later took up the tenor saxophone and the baritone saxophone. His tenor playing was equally as distinctive as his alto work. The few recorded evidences of his baritone work were authoritative too. He gave up the big bari stating that it was a pain to lug around! Stitt made hundreds of records usually with just piano, bass and drums. Later he liked the organ, guitar drums format. Stitt wasn't a joiner and formed very few working bands when he did as in the case of our Jazz Feature, they were short lived. This album is one of Stitt's own favorites and it's called "Personal Appearance". The rhythm section had been together for several months and it shows as Stitt had worked with these men for quite a while. The pianist is a young Bobby Timmons, about a year away from joining The Jazz Messengers. Bassist Edgar Willis is pliant and strong and he would later join Ray Charles for many years. Kenny Dennis is the young drummer who went on to record with Miles Davis and others. The program is the usual Stitt fare of great standards and original compositions by Sonny bassed on the blues or I Got Rhythm changes Personal Appearance is one of Sonny's personal bests.

That's what award-winning singer-song writer and humorist, Carla Ulbrich said when a life-threatening illness caused her kidneys to fail, hair to fall out, and feet to swell up where her only pair of shoes were giant poofy slippers. Although this is no laughing matter, she realized the best way for her to cope with such time was through some serious comedy.   As part of her recovery from Lupus, she wrote humorous medical songs like “On The Commode Again” (to the tune of Willie Nelson's “On The Road Again”) and “I Got Tremors” (to the tune of Louis Armstrong's “I Got Rhythm”).
