The weekly marketing podcast, More than a Few Words is hosted by Lorraine Ball and features conversations with professionals from around the world. In the old days we talked about advertising vs pr. Now we refer to paid media vs earned media. Regardless of what you call it, there is a tremendous opportunity to get your message in front of prospective custers is you know how to tell your story. Let's start with the difference between Advertising and PR.With advertising you are able to communicate with your audience with a message that you control. You can pick the date and time of your advertisement, you pick the vehicle you want it delivered in, whether it's a newspaper, online television or radio, and you pick the calendar items to go with it. In contrast, there is a filter when it comes to public relations. That filer is the editor of the newspaper or blog or the producer of the TV news show or podcast. They decide when or if they will invite you for an interview or run your story. While you would like to have ten paragraphs in the article or twenty minutes of air time, you may only see a fraction of that information shared in the final piece. But when you get that coverage, it is so powerful because that third party endorsement gives you tremendous credibility. Larger than life lifestyle is sometimes seen in executives that find themselves in corporate scandals. Today’s guest was at the right place, at the right time to launch a career into investigative reporting. Meet Greg Farrell who has a different perspective of white collar crime, as his job with Bloomberg requires him to put together the facts and drama of an event to bring it into the public eye. He sat in the courtroom during the HealthSouth trial and has tremendous insight in how a trial plays out as he has been on the front row to financial scandals. He’s an author of a book entitled “Corporate Crooks” which summarizes some of the big cases in this century and also the book entitled “Crash of the Titans: Greed, Hubris, the Fall of Merrill Lynch, and the Near-Collapse of Bank of America” which gives the story of the Wall Street disaster involving several financial giants. We talk in this podcast about players and incidents. Greg was on the Netflix Special “Trial by Media” and has covered several high profile trials, involving Enron, WorldCom and Martha Stewart, Tune in as we also talk about what’s happening in the aggressive attempt to keep the economy afloat and the room for bad apples to be in the mix of those who are getting benefits that shouldn't be in that line. Good people, well intended people can find themselves in situations that compromise their ethics.
Jim Parkman is a lawyer with Boles, Holmes, Parkman & White with offices in Birmingham and Dothan, Alabama. Jim, as I learned, handles complex and high profile white collar criminal defense cases nationwide. For example, Jim was the lead counsel representing Richard Scrushy of Birmingham’s Healthsouth in the mid-2000s. With Jim as his counsel, Mr. Scrushy was acquitted of all 36 charges before a jury in federal court. You can read about that trial here and also, if you have some down time to watch Netflix, check out the documentary “Trial by Media, King Richard episode” in which Jim plays a prominent role. When you hear Jim, you will quickly realize that he can be very impressive and captivating to jurors who are selected to sit on his cases. You’ll also hear about someone who, after many years of trying criminal cases, is really considered a master of his craft and is held in very high regard throughout the country. I think you’ll enjoy hearing Jim’s story on this podcast.

This is Episode One of Aaron Beam Speaks Podcast which is a focus on ethics and what it takes to avoid ethical landmines. We will unpack ideas, philosophies, values and warning signals through the stories and ethical standards that we explore and discuss with the guests who join us. Making good ethical decisions in society is necessary, but staying on the straight and narrow does not just happen. Moral reminders are imperative and setting a high ethical bar requires hard work, sharp senses and more than a little courage. While a single decision can alter the path, thinking about ethical dilemmas and creating a course of action can improve the odds that one makes the right choice. Aaron Beam Speaks Podcast is hosted by Aaron Beam, author and speaker who currently travels the country conveying the message to audiences in corporate and educational settings to set high ethical standards for themselves and their organizations. As the co-founder and first CFO at HealthSouth Corporation, the largest provider of outpatient surgery and rehabilitative services, Beam experienced life when days were good with the company growing by leaps and bounds and him personally profiting — to the moment he made the unethical decision that landed him in one of the biggest corporate fraud cases and then in prison. Beam is the author of two books: Ethics Playbook, a practical guide to why people and companies behave unethically, and how to build a strong ethical culture in your workplace, and HealthSouth, The Wagon to Disaster, which tells the history of the HealthSouth accounting fraud and why it happened.

Aaron Beam, the first CFO at HealthSouth, tells a cautionary tale of greed taking precedence over ethics.
In a “hidden-in-plain-sight” sense, financial statements have long been used to hide fraud. According to the 2016 ACFE Report to the Nations, financial statement fraud median loss is over $1,000,000 per case. Examples abound where management used “creative accounting” to disguise their fraudulent activities; Enron and HealthSouth are two of many examples. Many who deal with day-to-day accounting processes have little visibility into what is happening behind the scenes, as fraudulent transactions roll up into the financials, and eventually into reports to banks, stakeholders and others. This session will provide a brief overview of how fraud can be disguised in both numbers and words in audited financial statements.

During his junior year of college at the University of South Alabama, his father was in a car accident on the way to work and sustained a TBI. Through this experience and his fascination with cognition and how the brain works, he became interested in treating adults and adolescents with TBI. His first job out of college was working with a brain injury program in Greenville, South Carolina, where he worked with patients in an inpatient and outpatient setting. He also spent a couple of years working in a skilled nursing facility, but found his way back into the rehabilitation setting in his current position at AnMed Rehabilitation Hospital, a rehabilitation hospital in the HealthSouth network. He’s presented on topics of cognition, behavior and “brain games” and serves as the facilitator of the Anderson/Oconee/Pickens brain injury support group. Helping those who’ve acquired brain injuries has become a family affair as Richard’s wife of three years, a physical therapist, shares his passion of helping this particular patient population. HealthSouth is one of the nation's largest providers of post-acute healthcare services, offering both facility-based and home-based post-acute services in 34 states and Puerto Rico through its network of inpatient rehabilitation hospitals, home health agencies, and hospice agencies. Her focus is teaching the stress management aspects (deep breathing, meditation and relaxation) of Yoga and her passion is to create a bridge between traditional and holistic therapy.
