A Texas school district reportedly says it won't remove a biography about Michelle Obama following a complaint from a parent who said they felt the book unfairly portrays former President Trump as a bully. The book — titled Michelle Obama: Political Icon by Heather E. Schwartz — is among at least 86 that Texas parents have recently attempted to have banned. *WARNING* - This episode contains terminology used to describe African Americans and may offend some listeners. However, it is used in the context of the story. The high school girls were imprisoned. Why? The 1960's in America were a decade of profound change and upheaval in society, culture and politics. The Civil Rights Movement, the Vietnam War, and political assassinations were to define the era. But there was another event which occurred that so few people even know about. It's a story which seems to have been forgotten by time and by history. Our love for quizzes often begins at a young age. Remember completing them in magazines or creating your own to find out who'd you marry? Now, we're often sucked into Buzzfeed-style quizzes to determine which TV show characters were most alike and other silly topics meant solely to entertain. But what if you could take the irresistibility of a quiz and use it for lead generation? I've been doing just that with my marketing and what to share how you can create relevant quizzes to attract more buyers & sellers for your own real estate business. I'm a sucker for a good quiz. It's true what they say - the more personality you can add to your marketing, the more likely you are to develop genuine connections. Whether you're posting on social, emailing your database, or filming your next video, your personality is what separates you from other real estate agents. And how you come across is also what could attract your next buyer or seller. Because people want to get to know the real you, often before they work with you. Yet, many real estate agents aren't sure how to showcase their personalities or feel awkward doing so with their marketing. Have you heard the buzz surrounding Apple's iOS 14.5 update? It isn't the new fire heart emoji that has everyone talking - it's the new App Tracking Transparency (ATT) feature that's making headlines. This new feature allows users to allow or not allow apps to track activity across other companies' apps and websites. While Apple is portraying itself as pro-privacy, Facebook is publicly fighting back and criticizing the changes. But what does this mean for real estate marketing? In this episode, I'm covering what ATT is, how it will impact Facebook advertising, my opinion on the real estate search apps, and what the takeaways are for real estate agents. While Apple is emphasizing privacy protection, Facebook is fighting back that it's a blow to small businesses. And big real estate tech sites, like Zillow and Realtor, have apps that could be affected. Let's explore what this means for the industry and the average real estate agent. This week we dig deep into our culture and the stories we tell or chose not to tell. Women in the stories of early Rome were there but are almost absent in the teaching of its founding. Is it possible it's because rape permeates these stories? Would talking about rape and the historic examples allow us to address the present challenges presented by these topics? We learn about the kidnapping and rapes of women at the outset of the Kingdom of Rome and Lucretias rape at the hands of Sextus to end the Regal Period. Women were always there, you just have to be brave enough to teach it. Heather struggled to find meaning in life without drinking. She admits that once she stopped she grieved so hard for the loss of her best friend, alcohol. Leaning on the program and a sponsor, her life today is amazing. She has peace and a newfound humility and an idea of faith. THE IDEA OF FAITHDo not let any prejudice you may have against spiritual terms deter you from honestly asking yourself what they mean to you.ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS, p. 47The idea of faith is a very large chunk to swallow when fear, doubt and anger abound in and around me. Sometimes just the idea of doing something different, something I am not accustomed to doing, can eventually become an act of faith if I do it regularly, and do it without debating whether it's the right thing to do. When a bad day comes along and everything is going wrong, a meeting or a talk with another drunk often distracts me just enough to persuade me that everything is not quite as impossible, as overwhelming as I had thought. In the same way, going to a meeting or talking to a fellow alcoholic are acts of faith; I believe I'm arresting my disease. These are ways I slowly move toward faith in a Higher Power.Need the Daily Reflection Book?Visit our web siteVisit our blogVisit our Facebook GroupFollow us on TwitterSupport the Podcast:- On Patreon: https://patreon.com/dailyreflection- On PayPal: https://paypal.me/dailyreflection
Few topics have as many myths, stereotypes, and misperceptions surrounding them as that of poverty in America. The poor have been badly misunderstood since the beginnings of the country, with the rhetoric only ratcheting up in recent times. Our current era of fake news, alternative facts, and media partisanship has led to a breeding ground for all types of myths and misinformation to gain traction and legitimacy. Poorly Understood: What America Gets Wrong about Poverty (Oxford UP, 2021) is the first book to systematically address and confront many of the most widespread myths pertaining to poverty. Mark Robert Rank, Lawrence M. Eppard, and Heather E. Bullock powerfully demonstrate that the realities of poverty are much different than the myths; indeed in many ways they are more disturbing. The idealized image of American society is one of abundant opportunities, with hard work being rewarded by economic prosperity. But what if this picture is wrong? What if poverty is an experience that touches the majority of Americans? What if hard work does not necessarily lead to economic well-being? What if the reasons for poverty are largely beyond the control of individuals? And if all of the evidence necessary to disprove these myths has been readily available for years, why do they remain so stubbornly pervasive? These are much more disturbing realities to consider because they call into question the very core of America's identity. Armed with the latest research, Poorly Understood not only challenges the myths of poverty and inequality, but it explains why these myths continue to exist, providing an innovative blueprint for how the nation can move forward to effectively alleviate American poverty. 00:00:00 - Dr. John Pohl MD joins Kelly and Ryan to talk about his work as a pediatric gastroenterologist. Ever think that kids and adults have the same sort of digestive problems? Well you were wrong! John explains some of the key differences, but he's much nicer than my exclamation point would suggest. 00:30:00 - Having drunk with Ryan before, John is no stranger to our drinking segment. He's keeping it local with a Belgian-style white ale with orange peel from Wasatch Brewery. Ryan, in honor of John's home state, has a FULL STRENGTH (it's a big deal in Utah) Black Imperial IPA from Moab Brewery. Kelly has water. Kelly is responsible. Let us all be more like Kelly in the future. Stay hydrated, kids! 00:37:07 - Next John tells us about his research about how your pancreas could try to kill you. Sounds important. And he helped put together a book on his field of pediatric gastroenterology. Sounds prestigious. We end with John telling us a bit about how he came to be both a man of science and a man of faith. Sounds deep. Be sure to follow John on both Twitter and Tumblr! 01:09:42 - PaleoPOWs are a lot like pancreases; few people are sure why they're there, and hopefully they never turn against you.
