And we're so excited this expert vet is joining us not just on this podcast episode, but also at the Mother Earth News Fair this year! So, before Dr. Pol joins us at the Fair, we're sitting down with him to learn more about who he is and answer some questions from our readers. If you want to see Dr. Pol in person, join us at the Wisconsin Mother Earth News Fair! We want to remind folks to always use caution when caring for your animals, and to consult your local vet before administering any new treatments. In this episode we discuss the incredibly important thing that everyone (including you!) get's wrong about presence, we explore how to prime yourself for the best performance in moments of pressure and high stakes situations where other people are watching and judging you. And we share the exact strategy you can use to shift your brain into the mode that allows you to view the world as more friendly, help you feel more creative, and make you into someone who takes action. We dig deep into all this and much more with our guest Dr. Amy Cuddy. Dr. Amy Cuddy is an American social psychologist, author, and speaker. A unique behind the scenes look at the important work of world renowned veterinarian. Dr. Pol. The Dr. is utterly fascinating and passionate as he explains: how fear in treating animals is the worst thing, how he had to create NEW techniques on the fly he wasn't taught in Vet school to treat large farm animals - like how to properly stick your hand up the rear-end of an animal and not be killed, why few Vets want to care for farm animals these days and how that can be a problem for ALL of us, the day as a young boy in Netherlands he knew he wanted to care for animals and much more.

WOW Dr. Bill Johncock is just incredible! Bill is a podiatrist in Hickory, North Carolina, and a father of three, including Logan, who is 23 and was born with Angelman Syndrome. Bill, who is 57 and a six-time Boston Marathoner, shares how he ran his first Boston Marathon at age 19 with his then 55 year-old father and then went on to run over 100 marathons. When Bill learned that his son, Logan, would not be able to reach the same milestones as his other kids, Bill decided to create new milestones for Logan and began racing with Logan by pushing him in a customized racing wheelchair. After meeting Dick and Rick Hoyt at the race expo at the 2005 Boston Marathon, Bill was inspired to qualify for Boston with Logan as a duo team. Bill shares his 16-year journey toward qualifying for Boston with Logan (yes even duo teams like Bill and Logan need to meet the Boston qualifying standards) and then experiencing the long awaited joy of finally reaching the start line as one of only thirteen duo team participants at the 2021 Boston Marathon. Listen with some tissues nearby. Notes: Bill shares how Ainsley's Angels (Ainsleysangels.org), which ensures inclusion in endurance events, helped him and Logan get to the start line. In this season of The Incredible Dr. Pol, the doctor and his team tackle a caseload like no other. The action is non-stop as they treat the large and the small—from hustling to save a flailing Arabian horse to caring for a tiny Chihuahua left immobile after a major car accident. A variety of critters, including chinchillas, guinea pigs and geckos keep the vets busy. The crew's dedication is far-reaching, from customized house calls to around-the-clock critical care. There's never a dull week, especially one that includes back-to-back emergency treatment for two dogs from the same home—a lab with a mangled leg on one day, followed by life-threatening labor complications just days later for their other dog. Dr. Jan (Ya-n) Pol was born in the Netherlands and raised on a family dairy farm. With more than 50 years of veterinary experience, Dr. Pol is a pioneer in treating animals. He began his career working for a local veterinarian in Harbor Beach, Michigan. However, eager to begin their own practice, in 1981 Dr. Pol and his wife, Diane, started their own animal clinic out of their home. The business continued to grow, and they have serviced over half a million animals since their doors opened. Specializing in large farm animals, Dr. Pol treats horses, pigs, cows, sheep, alpacas, goats, chickens and even an occasional reindeer. A true friend of the farmer, he works tirelessly to ensure that the diminishing population of family farmers remains in business. He plays an integral role in keeping farmers' livestock healthy and their businesses profitable. Dr. Pol is also an advocate for affordable veterinary care. With his thick Dutch accent, signature mustache and vintage 1981 “Back to the Future” DeLorean car, Dr. Pol is nothing short of a local legend.

This is the second part of an interview with Dr John Sottery! In the first part Nikou and Dr John really focused on gut health, including omega 3, PPD and mental health disorders and why you want to remove vegetable and seed oils from your life! In this second part, they delve deep into a couple of Dr John’s specialities, anti-aging, biohacking, skin care and the importance of sleep. KEY TAKEAWAYS If you want to try and improve your life instantly, removing sugar and corn from your diet can go a long way to help. Dr John thinks people don’t realise that when you eat too much of these things they can’t be broken down, they must be stored and eventually they are stored as saturated fat. Gout is uric acid in your blood, if it gets too high you get dehydrated and you make crystals in your big toe joints, fingers and knuckles and it is very painful. One cause of gout that many people don’t realise, is too much fructose. Eliminating this from your diet can be a game changer. Many people in the US are sensitive to corn, but it is everywhere and most of it is GMO which means it is sprayed with glyphosate. It is common knowledge that dairy can be the culprit in those with gut issues, but it could actually be corn causing the problems and many people don’t even consider it to be the culprit. It can be helpful to look at other mammals, their digestive systems and what they are able to break down and process. For example, the digestive system of a cow is so much more complex than a human, therefore they can break down many enzymes that we simply cannot. PCOS (Poly-cystic Ovary Syndrome) is a common disorder now when it didn’t used to be. It especially affects younger women and they tend to have high levels of testosterone as well as insulin levels. When having insulin tests completed many people think as long as they are in the ‘normal range’ that they are ok. But the range is dictated by the last 5000 people that did the test, so in somewhere like the US where most people’s insulin is already too high, the normal range will be too high too. The role of vitamin D in health is often so underrated. If everyone in the world could get their vitamin D levels higher it would dramatically increase the worlds health. People would get less illnesses like the flu and covid but would also combat these illnesses more effectively with less long term complications if they did contract them. Nitric oxide has huge benefits. When people go plant based this increases massively which means they perform better mentally and physically. It also aids to keep blood pressure at a youthful level. BEST MOMENTS “I love your energy, I love your passion and I’m psyched for today we’re going to have fun!” “We have the big brains and the small stomachs and the less capable digestive tract” “It takes people ten or fifteen years to become type 2 diabetic, I’d like to know that ten years before” “If we could get every single person in the world to get their vitamin D levels above 32 Nano grams per ml…you can massively reduce your risk” VALUABLE RESOURCES Email: nikoulohse@gmail.com Instagram: @nikouela GUEST RESOURCES Vitamin K-2 and How to AVOID Calcifying Your Arteries : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5KKZOpHqVQ ABOUT THE HOST Nikou Lohse is a mom of three, wife to former MLB pitcher Kyle Lohse, Master Pilates instructor, yoga teacher, and lover of all things MOVEment, MINDFULness, and commUNITY. In this episode of Comes a Time, Oteil and Mike are joined by Dr. Jan Pol, veterinarian and star of the hit TV show The Incredible Dr. Pol. To kick off the discussion the three get right into it (literally), as Dr. Pol vividly explains how he knew he wanted to be a veterinarian after helping deliver a litter of pigs at age 12. Throughout the rest of the conversation you'll hear Dr. Pol tell impassioned stories about healing and understanding different kinds of animals, discuss massive advances in veterinary technology and how sometimes the simplest treatment methods are the most effective, amaze Mike and Oteil over the intelligence of dogs, and much more. Dr. Pol has been infatuated with animals since he was a boy, growing up on a dairy farm in the Netherlands. He graduated from the prestigious Utrecht University Veterinary program in 1970 and immigrated to the United States in 1971, where he founded Pol Veterinary Services with his wife, Diane. Since 1981 then they have provided quality care for the pets and livestock of over 25,000 clients, and serve as strong advocates for animal education through 4-H and the National Future Farmers of America organization. Dr. Pol has also published a book, called Never Turn Your Back on an Angus Cow. In 2011, the rest of the world got a chance to see Dr. Pol in action, as The Incredible Dr. Pol debuted on Nat Geo WILD. The show airs in over 100 countries worldwide, and is the #1 show on the network. This podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts.
