Just 24 hours into Canada's federal election campaign, The CJN has put Jewish issues on the agenda. On Monday morning of Mar. 24, in a hotel near the Toronto airport, Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre met with about 40 journalists from significant diaspora communities as part of a media roundtable reserved for “ethnic” news outlets—one of the first media opportunities since the federal election was called over the weekend. Poilievre fielded questions from outlets publishing in Mandarin, Punjabi, Ukrainian, Arabic and Vietnamese—and The Canadian Jewish News was there, too. While the focus was on Poilievre's general platform—including why he would be better to handle Canada's trade war with the U.S. than newly elected Liberal Prime Minister Mark Carney—he also explained how he plans to tackle hate crimes against Canada's Jewish community and address the Liberals' recently announced $100 million in aid for Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza. Hear what he has to say, on today's episode of _The CJN Daily _with host Ellin Bessner. What we talked about: Why the families of the Oct. 7 victims are suing the Canadian government for funding UNWRA, as is the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs, in The CJN. How Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre spent the spring of 2024 courting Canada's Jewish community, on The CJN Daily. In 2023, Canada committed $100 million over four years in funding for UNWRA, in The CJN. What to expect from this week's Antisemitism Forum in Ottawa

On Thursday March 6, in Ottawa, the Trudeau government is holding a national antisemitism forum to help better protect Jewish Canadians from what it calls “a troubling rise in antisemitic incidents, threats, and hate crimes.” It's by invitation only, and is expected to bring together police, prosecutors, politicians and Jewish leaders for a one-day confab on how Ottawa, the provinces and municipalities can work better together to ensure Jewish Canadians feel safe to go to synagogue, school and live in their communities. The timing of this forum has prompted some skepticism in some corners: it's being held just three days before the federal Liberals elect a new leader and prime minister–and only weeks before Canada could be sent into a general election, which puts any political pledges made at this conference at risk. It's also being held a full seventeen months post-Oct. 7, which unleashed an explosion of antisemitism in this country that's continued unabated, with synagogue fire bombings, gun shots at religious schools, vandalism against Jewish businesses, doxxing of Jews in health care and academia, and supporters of designated terror groups continuing to operate openly, including on campus, online and on the streets. Some groups, including CIJA, the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs, who pushed for the forum, say unless concrete action is announced, it will be of little value. So who's attending? Why weren't the Conservatives invited? What will Canadian police and politicians hear? Will Canada promise Bubble legislation? On today's episode of The CJN Daily, host Ellin Bessner gets a preview from one of the forum's panelists, Toronto criminal defence lawyer Mark Sandler, who's also the founder and chair of the Alliance of Canadians Combatting Antisemitism. What we talked about: Learn more about the Alliance of Canadians Combatting Antisemitism. Read more about what Jewish leaders are expecting from Ottawa's Antisemitism Forum, in The CJN. WELCOME TO THE MWSA PODCAST FOR MONDAY, JAN 27 Last Friday afternoon, the Government of Alberta quietly released the report of a task force that assessed the province's response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The report — with a budget of $2 million — was commissioned shortly after Premier Danielle Smith swept to power in late 2022. We check in with MRU Political Scientist Duane Bratt to get his thoughts on the document, which comes in at just over 270 pages. Next – Monday ‘marked' the 80th Anniversary of Holocaust Remembrance day – the day the liberation took place of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. We talk about the importance of this day – and hear about the disturbing current-day rise in anti-semitic hate, with Jess Burke -Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Training with the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs. And finally - according to new research - frequent Social Media use is associated with ‘increased' irritability in adults…Which brings about a few questions - how much time is considered ‘frequent' - and does this include ALL Social Media – or just specific ‘platforms'? We tackle the topic with Dr. Ted Jablonski - our ‘on-call' family physician.

When Canada's first emergency summit on antisemitism was held virtually on July 21, 2021, none of the attendees could have imagined that, just a couple of years later, antisemitism would reach new heights in this country and around the world. Back then, in the aftermath of a brief conflict between Israel and Hamas, the emergency summit convened federal politicians and anti-racism officials to hear from Jewish leaders who testified about their daily realities. There was never a second emergency summit. Canadian Jewish leaders didn't push for one, not wanting to simply hear repeated platitudes. But now, following recent riots in Montreal that saw anti-NATO and anti-Israel protesters smash windows, burn cars and throw Nazi salutes, lobbying efforts are at a fever pitch to make Summit 2.0 happen soon. However, as The CJN Daily‘s Ellin Bessner learned while attending a Jewish community town hall in Montreal this week, leaders are insisting that any such forum must be tightly focused on law enforcement, an arena where they urge Canadian agencies to staunch terrorism and crack down on hate crimes. On today's episode, we hear from Liberal MP Anthony Housefather, the prime minister's special advisor on the Jewish community and antisemitism; Deborah Lyons, Canada's special envoy on combatting antisemitism and preserving Holocaust remembrance; and Richard Marceau, a vice president at the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs. Avi and Phoebe are taking a little summer vacation and will return soon. In the meantime, we're presenting an episode of The CJN Daily that Avi was on earlier this summer about kosher slaughter in Canada. Last week, the Federal Court of Canada sided with Jewish communities in Montreal and Toronto in their dispute with the federal government over new biological guidelines covering how cows are slaughtered. On July 24, the judge granted kosher meat producers a temporary injunction, effectively pausing the enforcement of new guidelines that are aimed at ensuring animals don't feel undue pain when they're killed. Jewish groups such as Montreal Kosher and the Kashruth Council of Canada argued in court that the guidelines not only were bad science, but were not in keeping with ritual practice, and were too costly. Which is why the judge felt he needed to act quickly so as to preserve the religious freedoms enjoyed by Canadian Jews who've been legally permitted to use handheld ritual slaughter methods for generations. The judge's ruling took religion and culture into consideration, including how trained shochetim carry out a vital religious service for the Canadian Jewish community, and also the importance of eating meat on Jewish holidays. But do Jews really need to eat meat? How many shochet jobs are actually at direct risk? And, perhaps most important to the majority of kosher-keeping Canadians, will the price for kosher meat go down? Rabbi Avi Finegold, host of The CJN's weekly current affairs podcast Bonjour Chai, joins The CJN Daily to share his insight, and we'll also hear from Shimon Koffler Fogel, the CEO of the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs, who were directly involved in the case. Birju Dattani is a Canadian human rights lawyer who worked in the Yukon and his home province of Alberta before being catapulted into the highest-profile human rights job in the country a few weeks ago. In mid-June, Canada's justice minster announced Dattani's appointment for a five-year term as chief commissioner at the federal human rights watchdog. But the ink was hardly dry on the Order-in-Council before disturbing allegations began surfacing about some anti-Israel social media posts and lectures he made a decade ago while a university student in England. Jewish groups and other researchers discovered he'd shared a panel with a virulent Islamic terrorist, protested outside the Israeli embassy and once shared an article that compared Israelis to Nazis. Now the federal justice Minister Arif Virani has launched an investigation—although he isn't rescinding the job offer, despite calls to do so from CIJA, B'nai Brith, Canadian Friends of Simon Wiesenthal and the federal Conservatives. Dattani denies he is antisemitic, saying he didn't do the things he is accused of, has apologized if the revelations caused harm to the Jewish community, and is confident he will be vindicated. But as we'll hear on today's episode of The CJN Daily, at least one prominent Jewish outfit has a hard message for Dattani: “Apology not accepted.” Shimon Koffler Fogel, the CEO of the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs, joins from Ottawa to explain his position. For years, Israel has accused UNRWA, the disgraced United Nations agency, of ties to Palestinian terrorism and incitement and glorification of violence. But only after the massacres of October 7 did the UN agency, officially tasked with providing aid to Palestinians, get into the larger spotlight. Israel has accused - and provided evidence for - UNRWA staff of participating in Hamas' massacre, and has pointed to a huge Hamas data centre built directly underneath the agency's Gaza City headquarters, as well as satellite photos of schools built on top of Hamas bunkers, and much more. Every year, UNRWA receives funding from international donors, including Canada, meaning Ottawa effectively is funding Hamas terrorism. As a result, the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) recently announced it was taking legal action against the Trudeau government, saying funding UNRWA contravenes Canadian anti-terrorism legislation. He discusses his Zionist upbringing and how ”blind support for Israel was instilled” in him from a very young age…. and how he came to question the narrative he grew up with. We also chat about the endless examples in the current political climate, of deliberate distortion, disinformation and inversion both by the media and Israel lobbying groups, the suppression of left leaning, pro-Palestinian Jewish voices, and the targeting of racialized journalists who question the narrative. We also discuss the recent bizarre meltdowns of one of Canada's (supposedly) leading media critics; Jesse Brown of Canadaland. It's a fascinating case study in how someone who otherwise looks at the media with a critical eye, has decided to double and triple down on standard Zionist talking points, no matter how blatantly dishonest the framing may be. With the third largest Jewish Diaspora in the world, Canada has no shortage of communal organizations: B'nai Brith, the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs, Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center, plenty of Federations, cross-country campus Hillels—the list goes on. All of them, in some way, claim they are combatting antisemitism. So do we really need another one? Daniel Koren thinks so. After working at The CJN, B'nai Brith Canada and Hasbara Canada over the past decade, this May he founded Allied Voices for Israel, a campus organization that promotes Zionism by bringing together Jewish and non-Jewish students for trips to Israel, media fellowships and summer retreats. And, as he shares on this episode of Rivkush, the origin for the idea can be traced to his heritage as a Bukharan Jew whose own family traditions are a medley of Middle Eastern and Central Asian customs—nothing like the Ashkenormative standards that have come to define Jews, and to an extent Israel, in mainstream North American culture. On May 16, the House of Commons' Foreign Affairs and International Development Committee adopted a motion introduced by the NDP's Heather McPherson, a vocal critic of the Israeli government. Her motion—which passed with the support of four Liberal MPs, the NDP and the Bloc Quebecois—will now see the committee hold hearings on how Canada can foster peace between Israel, the West Bank and Gaza, in light of the recent upswing in violence that has killed at least 89 Palestinians and 14 Israelis this year. McPherson's views have sparked deep concern from some Jewish MPs and Jewish advocacy organizations, who fear the hearings will give a platform to Israel-bashing and pound a wedge between Jewish and Muslim groups in Canada. The Canadian government hasn't held hearings on its policies on Israel and the Palestinian crisis for years. (Ottawa still supports a two-state solution and sends millions in financial support to the region, mostly earmarked for Palestinians.) Ofir Sofer is the first member of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government to visit Canada since pro-democracy protests began in Israel four months ago. Sofer spent a whirlwind day in Toronto last week, as part of a higher-profile trip to New York's Jewish community, where his first stop was at the Chabad world headquarters. The cabinet minister is a member of Netanyahu's coalition partner, the right-wing Religious Zionist Party, led by extremist leader Bezalel Smotrich, now also Israel's finance minister. Sofer's trip was his first-ever to North America, where he toured mainly Orthodox schools and Orthodox synagogues, encouraging students and staff to make Aliyah. But he also got an earful from some Canadian non-Orthodox Jewish leaders who are worried that his government will tighten eligibility for automatic Israeli citizenship under the historic Law of Return. Sofir's visit was accompanied by a small protest outside the headquarters of the UJA Federation of Greater Toronto. The CJN Daily spoke briefly with the minister, although he wasn't giving interviews. On today's show you'll hear why. This week, Israel's incoming prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, will announce the country's cabinet ministers. It's all but certain that this will comprise his coalition partners, including Bezalel Smotrich, an extreme right-wing politician who wants to take control of the entire West Bank and Gaza and opposes rights for LGBTQ people; Itamar Ben-Gvir, infamous for his anti-Arab political stances; and Aryeh Deri, who's been convicted on separate counts of tax evasion and bribery—and spent almost two years in jail. Netanyahu insists these men will have to walk back some of their more extreme plans. But one law that could change is the Law of Return, restricting aliyah to only those born to a Jewish mother, in accordance with the Orthodox viewpoint. And how they handle the ongoing crisis with Palestinians is also up for debate—whether new laws will incite more violence and terror. To discuss all these issues and more, The CJN Daily assembled a panel of three Canadian Jewish leaders to share their concerns and make some predictions about what Israel will look like in the near future. Over the last few days, Canadian border officials blocked a shipment of lulavs bound for Montreal. Why? They believed, erroneously, that the Sukkot staple violated the country's agriculture laws, designed to prevent dangerous diseases or invasive bugs from entering the country. The situation caused a panic among religious communities in Ontario and Quebec, as the fate of thousands of lulavs suddenly seemed uncertain. In group chats and across social media, Canadian Jews began freaking out, worried that a longstanding waiver for commercial imports of these products for Sukkot was no longer being granted. To break down how it all happened, and what it was like at the apex of the tension, we're joined by Rabbi Leibele Rodal, an importer of lulavs and etrogs, who drove to New York on Sept. 20, 2022, in hopes of securing 1,000 lulavs. Plus, Shimon Koffler Fogel, head of the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs, will explain the diplomatic dealings that went on behind the scenes of the lulav limbo. As Canadian Jews debate whether to head back to in-person synagogue services for the High Holidays, and parents may fret about their kids' safety at the onset of back-to-school season, security is top of mind for many. The new head of community security for the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs, Gerry Almendrades—who served in the Canadian Armed Forces with time in Afghanistan—has been holding training sessions and conducting site visits of Jewish buildings in some parts of the country. Terror in Israel claims 11 lives: Hear two Canadians describe life on the ground

When Stacey Leavitt-Wright, the CEO of the Jewish Federation of Edmonton, booked a vacation to Israel, she had no idea she'd end up in the middle of the worst terror spree the country has seen since 2009. But that's exactly what happened. In the last month, 11 Israelis have been killed in three separate attacks that occurred in Beersheba, Hadera and Bnei Brak. They struck just as Israel's government welcomed Arab foreign ministers to a milestone peace summit in the Negev desert—and also shortly before the start of Ramadan. Questions are now being asked about the efficacy of Israel's intelligence system and the connection some gunmen have to ISIS. Now, as police and army patrols continue hunting down collaborators and restricting border crossings, Israeli streets are quieter than usual. To understand what life is like on the ground, we'll hear from two Canadians in the Holy Land: Stacey Leavitt-Wright and Adir Krafman, a former spokesperson for the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs, who has left the organization and moved to Israel. Shortly after Minister of Public Safety Marco Mendicino learned about the hostage situation at Congregation Beth Israel in Colleyville, Texas, his phone started buzzing with messages from Canadian Jewish community leaders. They wanted to make sure he saw what was happening—and also wanted to convey their concerns about copycat attacks at home. In Canada, the Communities at Risk: Security Infrastructure Program (SIP) has existed for more than a decade, covering up to half the costs, to a maximum of $100,000, for security infrastructure upgrades to places of worship, community centres and religious schools. And while many synagogues have benefited from the program, the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs is pushing the Canadian government to refocus the program—or create new programs—for security personnel for the Jewish community. While Mendicino didn't announce any new measures, he granted The CJN Daily an in-depth interview about how the government is responding to the American situation. That includes speeding up the process of getting funds into the hands of community leaders and considering expanding the program in the future. Across Canada over the weekend, synagogues gatherered virtually to pray for the safety of the hostages at Congregation Beth Israel in Colleyville, Texas. After an hours-long standoff between the FBI and an armed gunman, the situation ended with only the hostage-taker killed and all hostages safe. Meanwhile, nervous Jewish community leaders across Canada got in touch with their local police forces, which promised to step up patrols around Jewish buildings for a while. And the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs says they want the federal government to give Canada's Jewish communities more money to hire permanent security guards year-round, not just on the high holidays. What impact does this latest attack on Jews have here in Canada? Will there be threats of copycats? Are our schools and shuls safe, as parents and administrators stay on high alert? July 14 was a hectic day for Jews looking for ways to combat anti-Semitism: there were at least three large-scale events held on the subject within 24 hours of each other. One was a virtual town hall organized by the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs, which aimed to gather input from Jewish leaders and ordinary people on the current rise of anti-Semitism. Another happened in Jerusalem, where different Jewish leaders met with mayors from across the world to hear about different programs being launched, what's working and what isn't. The third event was a meeting of federal parliamentarians from various countries—including Canada, the U.S., Britain, Australia and Israel—who issued an interim plan on how to fight anti-Semitism online. Examining the relationship between Ukrainians and Jews in Revolutionary Times, 1917-1920.Written and narrated by Peter Bejger.Centennials offer moments for reflection. The one hundredth anniversary of a major turning point in history provides an excellent opportunity for re-evaluation and reconsideration. In the spring of 1917 the Russian Empire came to an abrupt end. The Russian Revolution consumed the former imperial capital of Petrograd. Ukraine was breaking away, and Jewish and Ukrainian political leaders in Kyiv moved boldly to set up a striking new relationship between the two nationalities. This new relationship—and its eventual failure—is examined in the book A Prayer for the Government: Ukrainians and Jews in Revolutionary Times, 1917-1920, published in 1999.The author, Dr. Henry Abramson, serves as Dean at Touro's Lander College of Arts and Sciences in Brooklyn, New York. A native of northern Ontario, he received his PhD in History from the University of Toronto in 1995. He has gone on to visiting and post-doctoral positions at Cornell, Harvard, Oxford, and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.Abramson writes that a potential newborn friendship between Ukrainians and Jews emerged in that revolutionary year of 1917. This was a tentative rapprochement between two groups that had lived for centuries in what Abramson calls an “intimate insularity.”This newborn friendship at first blossomed, resulting in the appointment by the new Ukrainian government of the first Minister of Jewish Affairs in modern history. This was an attempt to provide Jewish political autonomy in the new Ukrainian state. It was what Abramson called a bright chapter in the long history of the Jewish people. One in which Jews were emancipated into a free state. And they were given privileges as a minority that exceeded even those in Western Europe and America. However, Abramson points out Ukrainian parties could not communicate their liberal program to the peasantry. And he noted Jewish activists were too far removed from the ordinary Jewish citizen to mobilize widespread support for the Ministry of Jewish Affairs.By the spring of 1919 Ukraine was submerged by a wave of violence. This was one of the darkest chapters of Jewish history, with pogroms that were only overshadowed later by the Holocaust.Abramson’s meticulous account traces how the attempt by both Jews and Ukrainians to achieve a working political relationship was betrayed by less enlightened attitudes among the general population.Abramson also addresses the national agendas that have emerged in the historiography of Ukrainian-Jewish relations during the revolution. This issue has been particularly fraught since the assassination of the Ukrainian revolutionary leader Symon Petliura in Paris in 1926. His assassin, Samuel Schwartzbard, was acquitted in a controversial trial.Abramson acknowledges the trial has overshadowed Ukrainian-Jewish relations, and heavily influenced historical research, up to this very day. Scholars have attempted to either justify or condemn the trial’s outcome. Most studies have focused on either the anti-Jewish pogroms or the participation of Jews in the Ukrainian revolutionary movement. Abramson’s stated goal is to provide a synthesis of these two trends and to achieve a more comprehensive understanding of the period. At the end of the day Abramson concedes that the prognosis for Jewish autonomy in Ukraine, and by extension cordial Jewish-Ukrainian relations, was poor. He notes that first of all, the stratum of society that participated in the rapprochement between the two communities was too thin.
