This is the first spring football game under the new football coaching staff. To get you ready, Adam talks with all three coordinators to see how practices have been going. New offensive and defensive coordinators, Jim Chapin and Sean Cronin stop by, along with returning special teams coordinator, Keith Murphy. They get you ready for Saturday at Kelly/Shorts Stadium and also throw in some of their favorite food takes as well.
This episode features my conversation with drummer, Matt Starr. Born and raised in Toronto, Matt began his musical studies at the age of 5 learning the violin. At 13, it was his discovery of the Beatles and drummer Ringo Starr which launched his journey as a drummer. Matt pursued formal music education at the University Of Toronto, but after a couple of years, felt that it wasn't what he was seeking and left to pursue other options. In search of inspiration, he traveled to New Jersey to study with legendary jazz drummer Joe Morello, reigniting his passion for music. Matt also studied with Jim Chapin and studio legend Bernard Purdie. After relocating to Los Angeles in 2001, Matt established a successful career as an in-demand session drummer, who is know for his creative approach and ability to adapt to many different musical styles. He has gone on to work with artists such as Sarah McLachlan, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Chris Shiflett from the Foo Fighters, Christopher Cross, Lisa Loeb and many more. In our conversation, we talk about what it's like working with Sarah McLachlan and how that gig came about. We also discuss his experiences studying with the legendary Joe Morello, and why he embraces opportunities that allow for creative freedom and expression. Born in Brooklyn and raised in Massapequa, New York, Phantom grew up listening to his parents' jazz records and began playing drums by the age of ten. He took lessons with Mousie Alexander, who played with Benny Goodman, studying jazz and working through books by Jim Chapin and Ted Reed. By the late 1970s, he was playing in bands with his childhood friend, bassist Lee Rocker. They soon joined forces with guitarist Brian Setzer to form Stray Cats.[ When performing with Stray Cats, Phantom did not sit behind a standard drum kit like most drummers, but instead opted to play in a standing position with a minimalist set-up of bass drum, snare drum, hi-hat, and crash cymbal. During downtime from Stray Cats, Phantom played in swing, rockabilly, and jump blues combo The Swing Cats with Rocker and ex-Polecats guitarist Danny B. Harvey,[6] as well as rockabilly and glam rock project Phantom, Rocker & Slick with Rocker and guitarist Earl Slick. In 1985, he appeared with Carl Perkins and a host of other musicians including Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Dave Edmunds and Rosanne Cash for Blue Suede Shoes: A Rockabilly Session in London, England. Phantom also played with Jerry Lee Lewis. He later formed Col. Parker with former Guns N' Roses guitarist Gilby Clarke, releasing the album Rock n Roll Music in 2001.[ Most recently, he has been involved in the eponymous roots-rock band Slim Jim's Phantom Trio; rock-and-roll supergroup Dead Men Walking with Kirk Brandon and Mike Peters, and Captain Sensible;[ and rockabilly supergroup The Head Cat with Danny B. Harvey and the late Motörhead vocalist and bassist Lemmy. He also hosts the Rockabilly Raveup show on Little Steven's Underground Garage. In March 2023, Barnes announced the supergroup The Barnestormers, featuring Barnes, Cheney, Phantom with Jools Holland and Kevin Shirley. A self-titled album was released on 26 May 2023. Dom relates a poignant story about Jim Chapin
It's hard to imagine how the families of Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle, Maddie Mogen, and Ethan Chapin are getting through the tragedy of their loved ones' brutal deaths. Ethan's parents, Stacy and Jim Chapin, really are so inspiring. I feel like we can all learn life skills from how they handling what has to be the hardest event of their lives. Allow me to share their pearls of wisdom along with some stories about their lives and beautiful photos of the family. “Bergen Street” The Brooklyn-born Chapin Sisters's new single—which is their first new material since 2017's Ferry Boat—is called "Bergen Street" and it's about moving. And because it's about moving from Brooklyn to the Hudson Valley, The Chapin sisters have had to have a lot of conversations about that move and what it means. Leaving Brooklyn really is kind of a big deal for sisters Abigail and Lily because they have pretty deep familial roots there. The Chapins are a Brooklyn family and their father Tom and his five brothers put their stamp on the city with their sixties folk band The Chapin Brothers. Two of those brothers you might recognize immediately--Tom Chapin is a well-known folk legend, whose albums for kids are absolute staples and their late uncle Harry, whose "Cats In The Cradle" is a staple on AM radio, was a beloved singer/songwriter as well. Reaching back further, their grandfather Jim Chapin was a well-known and respected jazz drummer. So music and Brooklyn run deep and moving away was a big deal and "Bergen Street" effortlessly chronicles what it feels like to have familiar geography in your rear view mirror. It's a wrenching, aching and utterly gorgeous song that's filled with poetic precision, melodic finesse and otherworldly harmonic bliss. In other words, the Chapin Sisters have stayed right on brand. Since 2004 they've put out a handful of marvelous albums, including The Chapin Sisters Sing The Chapin Brothers, A Date With The Everly Brothers and Lake Bottom. They've also recorded with Cass McCombs and She and Him, and collaborated with Michael Fitzpatrick of Fitz and the Tantrums as well as Louie Stephens of Rooney. Pick any of their albums or EPs and prepare to swoon. Their voices braid effortlessly together and rise and fall with heartbreaking immediacy. Their phrasing is precise, their delivery is heavenly and the way every syllable soars is nothing short of spellbinding. www.thechapinsisters.com www.bombshellradio.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.embersarts.com www.alexgreenonline.com Twitter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

His sensational drumming and brilliant communications skills have earned Dom Famularo a reputation of being the world's leading motivational drum set artist / educator. Through history-making tours of China and the Far East, and with standing ovations to capacity audiences at virtually every major drumming event in Europe and the Americas, this vibrant performer from Long Island, New York is renowned for delivering entertaining and awe-inspiring performances unlike any other.Tutored by legendary greats Joe Morello, Jim Chapin, Al Miller, Charlie Perry, Colin Bailey, Shelly Manne, Papa Jo Jones and Ronnie Benedict, Dom combines the masterful techniques of the past with the parameter-pushing concepts of today's music for a highly creative and uniquely personal style of drumming. With hands powered by the famous Moeller technique and feet dancing through high-speed double-pedal bass drumming patterns he delivers performances that dip and dive through dynamics and styles with energy and ease. The first Western drummer to perform clinics in China, Dom is accustomed to making headlines. He was a special guest performer at the first-ever Buddy Rich Tribute Concert, an event which he helped organize. He was a highlight as host and performer at the Pacific Rim Drum Invitational (the first drum event to be simulcast live on the Internet), and he's a primary attraction at star-studded drumming events such as the LaRioja Drumming Festival, Koblenz International Drummer Meeting in Germany, the Florida Drum Expo, the Paris Music Show, the massive Ultimate Drummers Day in Australia, the Heartbeat World Rhythm spectacle for Canadian TV, and the Montreal Drumfest.Dom doesn't rely on major band affiliations as a claim to fame, but performances with the Buddy Rich Big Band, B.B. King, Lionel Hampton, Chuck Leavell (Rolling Stones), T Lavitz (The Dixie Dregs), and the Louie Bellson Big Band reveal the pedigree of his playing. Michael has worked with Guitar Phenom Philip Sayce for the past six years and is currently touring the world this summer with Blues/Rock legend, Walter Trout.

This week's guest is Guy Licata. Guy is most recently known as the founder of Reflexx Practice Pads (now the Zildjian Reflexx Conditioning Pad), but Guy is more than just a business owner; he's a master player himself. While he's a very-sought after teacher himself, Guy has studied with the greats including Jim Chapin and Jojo Mayer, which we get into during the episode. He's played with countless artists over the years including Museum of Love (fronted by LCD Soundsystem's Pat Mahoney), Santigold, Head Automatica, Shakira, RAC, Fischerspooner and many, many more. He's a fountain of energy with a passion for talking drums that makes my job as a host very easy. He also prepared Emmy Award-winning actor Riz Ahmed for his role as a drummer in Amazon Studios film ‘Sound of Metal' where he was tasked with all aspects of the drum set instruction and preparation for the role over an intensive seven-month period, with Riz having no formal experience as a drummer. We discussed that experience for a ‘Part 2' of our conversation coming out at a later date, but for the time being, please enjoy my conversation with Guy Licata as he dissects the top 5 influences that shaped the way he approaches the instrument. We talked for a while prior to pushing record, so you're jumping into a moving train right off the bat. Cheers! CLAUS HESSLER -Wow!
Claus teaches us all about the Moeller Technique and its origins with Sanford Moeller, and how he passed the technique along to the legendary Jim Chapin who taught Claus and many famous drummers. This episode is full of great history and stories about how this method of playing was passed down through the generations, and also hear all about Claus's passion for rope tension drums, collapsed rudiments, and a number of other topics! Claus Hessler is an author, performer and educator who had a very close relationship with Jim Chapin and is a modern expert on rudimental drumming and the Moeller technique. In 2006, Jim Chapin was quoted saying "I hardly know anyone who is closer to the real Moeller than Claus Hessler." You can find out everything about Claus on his website at https://claushessler.com/ Enjoy this episode!

This led him to be the Orchestra Drummer on a popular cruise line, heading up the drum department for the USA West Coast for the “National Guitar Workshop”. Mike has also performed and recorded with songwriters and bands with a range of styles including progressive rock, latin, jazz, blues, pop, funk, celtic, country, metal, and R&B.Mike has taught on various drum instructional DVDs including “Moeller Method Secrets”, “The Jazz Drumming System”, “The Latin Drumming System”, and the world-famous “Drumming System” which has sold nearly 20,000 copies. Mike is also an ongoing instructor for the online drum lessons community at www.Drumeo.com.Mike's goal as an outgoing performer and enthusiastic teacher is to excite and motivate others about the drums and music.
Dom Famularo teaches us about Billy Gladstone, Sanford A, Moeller, and George L. Stone - the godfathers of drumming technique. He also shares many great stories from his journey through learning from the students of these great teachers including Shelly Manne, Jim Chapin, and Joe Morello. The lineage of educators that run from these three men runs so much deeper than I ever imagined. This episode features one of my favorite Buddy Rich stories that I have ever heard. Dom got to hang out with Buddy and learn about his background as a young Vaudevillian who was on the road with Moeller, Stone, and Gladstone. Dom is known as "Drummings Global Ambassador" and he does that name justice. He can be found at any given time performing clinics around the world and spreading the love of drums to everyone he meets. Dave Goodman. Jazz critic John Clare has described Dave Goodman as ‘one of the leading drummers in the country' and ‘[one of] the most intriguing drummers recording anywhere'. At just eighteen, Dave received an invitation to join the renowned Mike Nock Quartet and, at twenty, came second in the prestigious National Jazz Awards. Today, he is, undoubtedly, one of Australia's most important jazz drummers. This is evident in the long list of luminaries – both Australian and international – with whom Dave has worked: Joe Lovano, Paul Bollenback, Bernie McGann, James Morrison, Don Burrows, Vince Jones and Mark Isaacs, to name just a few. At present, he is a key member of several of Australia's finest ensembles, including Ten Part Invention, Kevin Hunt Trio, Steve Barry Quartet, and Matt Keegan Trio. ‘Dave's infectious love of music, his dedication to jazz drumming and his melodic approach to the drumset have been a source of inspiration to me for twenty years,' Matt says. Combining technical mastery with profound musicality, Dave's drumming is celebrated for its powerful melodic sensibility and, most importantly, its distinctive voice. Chief influences include Jack DeJohnette, Vinnie Colaiuta and Andrew Gander. ‘Each of these guys come out of Tony Williams, Elvin Jones and Roy Haynes in their own way,' Dave explains. 'I love them fundamentally because they are uniquely creative and original in playing only the essence of what each piece of music requires. I aspire to this in my own work.' Following in the footsteps of his predecessors, Dave is a genuine innovator: relentlessly imaginative and constantly evolving. His professional experience has been augmented with extensive study, both formal and informal. He holds a First Class Honours degree in Jazz Performance and a PhD in Jazz Drumset Performance Studies from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, and has studied under several world-class musicians, including Billy Hart, Joe Morello, Jim Chapin and Chad Wackerman. As a bandleader and composer in his own right, Dave counts numerous creative projects under his belt. Previous undertakings include Dave Goodman's Strange Loop, featuring guitarist James Muller; eleven-piece ensemble Game 1A: Chess; Ad Infinitum, which, in 2002, was commissioned for a recording by the ABC's Jim McLeod's Jazztrack; and the Dave Goodman Quartet, which performed at the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues. As an educator, Dave draws on over twenty years of teaching experience from previous appointments at prominent institutions such as Sydney Conservatorium of Music, and his pedagogical vision is ‘to help aspiring drummers to realistically evaluate and improve their own rate of progress over time by establishing and adhering to a regular practise routine that includes technique, repertoire, improvisation, and performance studies'. Dave plays Sonor Drums, Bosphorus Cymbals, Remo Drumheads, Vater Drumsticks, DW Pedals & Hardware, and Roc-N-Soc Thrones exclusively. Welcome to episode 13! I'm really, really pumped to be releasing this episode, which is a conversation with Dave Goodman, who's a Sydney based drummer and teacher. I first heard Dave play before I even moved to Sydney. I went to see an early gig at the Side On Cafe in Annandale, and after a couple of beers decided I'd stay for the late gig as well. There was a drummer setting up a sonor kit and some amazing looking old K cymbals, and holy shit! Dave was like liquid around the kit, and he'll give me shit for the comparison, but was the closest thing to Vinnie that I'd seen. I went to say thanks afterwards, and complimented him on his cymbal sound, and he couldn't have been cooler, and pulled out both his newer K Constantimoples and the old Turkish K's that he had and got me to play them so I could hear the similarities and differences. That really stuck in my mind, and set a precedent for how I try to act at gigs when someone comes up to say hi. I got to know Dave after that from working in drum shops around Sydney, and he's always been a very articulate and deep thinking guy to chat to. So when he agreed to do the podcast I was equal parts nervous and excited, and started to get my research going on. Dave's done some serious study in his time. From studying in Australia with Jim Piesse to travelling to New York to study with both Jim Chapin and Joe Morello, and to top it off writing 100000 words including 100 pages of transcription for his PHD on Tony Williams. I got to sit down with Dave at his house, and before I knew it we'd broken the 2 hour mark. Initially I was going to try to edit the episode down, but like usual I didn't feel like I could do that without losing some absolute gems, so here it is in it's entirety. Enjoy!
