Dr. Lindo Bacon shares why calling out and noticing diet culture can be so challenging because it's countercultural and risky, why what diet culture is selling is only creating the problem, the importance of looking at your own experience with food as validation, challenging weight stigma and advocating for every body being worthy of respect.  Dr. Bacon also shares their personal story around their gender identity and offers reassurance that our past stories can be reclaimed as a source of power and much more around self-acceptance, hope and living inside of your body.  Dr. Lindo Bacon is a researcher and former professor, and for nearly two decades taught courses in social justice, health, weight, and nutrition. Dr. Bacon holds a Ph.D. in physiology with a specialty in nutrition, and master's degrees in psychology and exercise metabolism. Dr. Bacon has mined their deep academic proficiency, their clinical expertise, and their personal experience to write two bestselling books, Health at Every Size: The Surprising Truth About Your Weight, and the co-authored Body Respect: What Conventional Health Books Get Wrong, Leave Out, or Just Plain Fail to Understand about Weight. This episode kicks off a series on the intersection of parenting and food.   We begin today with a conversation with Dr. Lindo Bacon, where we bust a LOT of myths about the obesity epidemic that is said to be plaguing people in the United States and other countries that follow a similar diet.   The messaging we get from government entities seems pretty simple: being fat is bad for you. It causes increased risk for a host of diseases as well as early death. If you're fat, you should lose weight because then your risk of getting these diseases and dying early will be reduced.   But what if this wasn't true?   What if this messaging had been established by people who own companies that manufacture weight loss products who sit on panels that advise international governmental entities like the World Health Organization?   What if body fat was actually protective for your health?   We dig into all these questions and more in this provocative interview.   We'll continue this series with episodes looking specifically at sugar, as well as supporting parents who have or continue to struggle with disordered eating, and how to support children in developing eating habits that will serve them for a lifetime, not just get the vegetables into them today.   Jump to highlights: (01:00) Introducing Dr. Lindo Bacon and starting our series of episodes on the intersection of parenting and food (02:22) Stripping the word ‘fat' of it's pejorative meaning and reclaiming the term while acknowledging that it may be jarring for some people (03:09) Kicking off the conversation with how we measure health using BMI and how it might not be accurate (05:03) The resistance to Katherine Flegal's seminal research in weight and longevity (05:49) The development of the Body Mass Index was with scientific bias to fit the bell curve (07:30) Higher body weight does not necessarily mean a person has greater risk of poor health (10:59) We actually know that the research is highly exaggerated in terms on the role that it plays on health (13:16) Dr. Bacon's turning point: When she found out that BMI was recommended by an organization funded by pharmaceutical companies who have the only weight loss drugs on the market (17:35) Taking the issue one step further with the American Medical Association's recommendation whether to categorize obesity as a disease or not (19:19) The Obesity Paradox is an observation in the research that people who are obese who get the same diseases as those with ‘normal' weight are living longer (21:15) The concept of dieting just doesn't work according to the data (30:33) A story of Dr. Bacon's and their father's knee problems (34:40) Individual factors only accounts to 25% to somebody's total health outcomes and social determinants account to about 60% (42:05) It is cool right now to be your authentic self but not everyone can so easily be their authentic self when their authentic selves are not valued by society at large (45:48) Improving the health of individuals is more communal than individual   Resource Links: https://www.amazon.com/Health-At-Every-Size-Surprising/dp/1935618253/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=Health+at+Every+Size+by+lindo+bacon&qid=1625316371&sr=8-1 (Health at Every Size), by Lindo Bacon https://www.amazon.com/Body-Respect-Conventional-Health-Understand/dp/1940363195/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=Body+Respect+by+lindo+bacon&qid=1625316563&sr=8-1 (Body Respect: What Conventional Health Books Get Wrong, Leave Out, and Just Plain Fail to Understand about Weight), by Lindo Bacon https://www.amazon.com/Radical-Belonging-Survive-Thrive-Transforming-ebook/dp/B084HK4BT5/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=Radical+Belonging&qid=1625316690&sr=8-1 (Radical Belonging: How to Survive and Thrive in an Unjust World (While...

Are you ready to stop micromanaging your weight? Are you ready to get off the dieting merry-go-round which, let's be honest, is not as enjoyable as the ones that we rode on when we were kids? Are you ready to finally learn how to listen to your body and become an intuitive eater? If you are nodding your head yes to these questions, I am hosting a free (yes, you read that right – free!) five-day find your set point weight challenge from June 6, 2021 to June 10, 2021, a totally free challenge hosted by The SociEATy. This five-day challenge which is open to the public will guide you through five days of exercises (and no, that won't include jumping jacks, I promise!), giving you tips to implement so that you can find your set point weight! Now you might be wondering, what even is a set point weight? Well, your set point weight is the weight at which your body wants to be, where it functions optimally and feels its best. Weight loss, weight maintenance, and weight gain all usually happen when we work toward finding our set point weights, so it's not a weight loss challenge! It is a challenge to find food freedom and body freedom so that you can finally become an intuitive eater! Be sure to sign up for the program which, again, is totally free! You can't beat that price, right? As I said, three things tend to happen when we try to find our set point weight – we lose weight, we maintain weight, and/or we gain weight, and three separate interviews with fellow members of The SociEATy who have experienced all three are coming next week. As an introduction in the meantime, though, I share with you how to learn what your set point weight is and how to use that knowledge to move toward intuitive eating. Your set point weight is not a static number. It's more of a range, and not even that range is going to be exactly the same throughout the course of our lives. Factors that are out of our control such as our age, for example, are going to cause our set point ranges to change. The bad news is that it can be very difficult to determine what your set point weight is, but the good news is that there are some questions that you can ask yourself to determine whether or not you are there. One last time, I strongly encourage you to sign up for the totally free five-day challenge (which, again, is not a weight loss challenge)! Please reach out to me with screenshots of you listening to the podcast and to let me know that you have signed up for the challenge! I would love to hear from you! So my guest is, if you haven't guessed already, Dr. Lindo Bacon. Not only was it great to have a conversation with them, but also I learned so much from it. So just to quickly explain why the episodes are in two parts, we had our first podcast recording on 22nd December and during the interview, it just felt like the energy was not quite there, or the connection wasn't there in the way that it might be. I know that I was pretty burnt out at the end of December and I know Lindo mentioned that they were finding it hard to connect, and they'd had a lot of podcast recordings, I think 15 in the last couple of weeks. So we both kind of finished the recording, feeling like maybe something wasn't quite right. And Lindo asked if they could have listened to the episode, and we could kind of sit with it before we thought about what to do next. And so I...

If you haven't listened to Part 1 yet, I'd highly recommend that you head there first and hear that. Otherwise, this may not make much sense. If you've already listened to Part 1, then I won't keep you any longer and I'll let you get straight to listening to Part 2. Gem: Hi Lindo! Thanks so much for joining me again. Lindo: Oh, it's great to see you again, Gem. Gem: Yeah, and it's really nice to actually see you as well, rather than just to hear you because before we both said that was a bit disconnecting. Lindo: Right, right. Definitely, I think it's gonna be... it's so much easier to feel present when you can actually see somebody. Gem: Yeah, absolutely. And what we were talking about in between when we recorded the first episode, which was towards the end of December - I think was the 22nd of December actually - and this is kind of like a reflection part, I guess, where we had this experience and it's about what has come out of that. I found it a really interesting experience. I don't know how it's been for you. Lindo: Yeah, it has been quite a learning experience. I know right after we talked, I had felt a bit of disconnection in our conversation, and I felt awkward with you running the podcast for other people, because it just didn't feel like I was fully present in it. It just didn't feel like it was as powerful as it could be. And I felt a lot of shame for that. And so I contacted you and asked you not to run it and let me just be thoughtful a little bit about what was going on. And what was your experience when I contacted you and said that? Gem: Yeah, cos it was at the end of the recording wasn't it that we talked and you'd said that you were feeling a bit disconnected? And I think my immediate thought was, "Oh gosh, I've...

This conversation with Holly Toronto felt so clarifying. While speaking with her, I felt like my soul was distilling down and discerning my swirling thoughts about the fractured relationship we have with our body image and how we move and nourish ourselves. This is the time of year that many of us set goals for ourselves and that process often begins with an assessment of what we don’t like about our current lives so we can improve it. We make resolutions to eat better, exercise more and lose weight. This obviously comes as no surprise to anyone, but have you ever stopped and wondered “Why?” Why do we…view our Body as an object that is a constant self-improvement project? reach for fitness goals from a space of “not good enough”, scarcity and punishment?place so much conditional value on what we look like? Radical Belonging: How to Survive and Thrive in an Unjust World (While Transforming it for the Better) by Lindo Bacon Too many of us feel alienated from our bodies. This isn't your personal failing; it means that our culture is failing you. We are in the midst of a cultural moment. #MeToo. #BlackLivesMatter. #TransIsBeautiful. #AbleismExists. #EffYourBeautyStandards. Those of us who don't fit into the "mythical norm" (white, male, cisgender, able-bodied, slender, Christian, etc.)—which is to say, most of us—are demanding our basic right: To know that who we are matters. To belong. Being "othered" and the body shame it spurs is not "just" a feeling. Being erased and devalued impacts our ability to regulate our emotions, our relationships with others, our health and longevity, our finances, our ability to realize dreams, and whether we will be accepted, loved, or even safe. Radical Belonging is not a simple self-love treatise. Focusing only on self-love ignores the important fact that we have negative experiences because our culture has targeted certain bodies and people for abuse or alienation. For marginalized people, a focus on self-love can be a spoonful of sugar that makes the oppression go down. This groundbreaking book goes further, helping us to manage the challenges that stem from oppression and moving beyond self-love and into belonging. With Lindo Bacon's signature blend of science and storytelling, Radical Belonging addresses the political, sociological, psychological, and biological underpinnings of your experiences, helping you understand that the alienation and pain you are experiencing is not personal, but human. The problem is in injustice, not you as an individual. So many of us feel wounded by a culture that has alienated us from our bodies and divided us from each other. Radical Belonging provides strategies to reckon with the trauma of injustice; reclaim yourself, body and soul; and rewire your nervous system to better cope within an unjust world. It also provides strategies to help us provide refuge for one another and create a culture of equity and empathy, one that respects, includes, and benefits from all its diverse peoples. Whether you are transgender, queer, Black, Indigenous or another Person of Color, disabled, old, or fat—or you more closely resemble the "mythical norm"—Radical Belonging is your guidebook for creating a world where all bodies are valued and all of us belong—and for coping with this one, until we make that new world a reality. #032  Fed up with diets and wellness hype? Christine Okezie is on a mission to guide you to approach your food, weight and body image challenges from a genuinely "whole-istic" perspective.  She's passionate about you having the right tools to understand the deeper soul truths in your health challenges so you can feel empowered in your body and in your life. I had the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Lindo Bacon who has been a well respected researcher and professor in the fields of physiology, psychology and exercise metabolism for almost 20 years and who is widely known for transforming the discourse on weight with the body positivity movement. They are the best selling author of paradigm shifting books: Health at Every Size: The Surprising Truth About Your Weight and the co-author of Body Respect: What Conventional Health Books Get Wrong, Leave Out, or Just Plain Fail to Understand about Weight.  Both these books have helped to expand the Health at Every Size philosophy which at the core is a social justice framework that respects the diversity of body shapes and sizes, supporting equitable access to health care, and rejecting weight discrimination and stigma. In this heartwarming conversation, we talk about Dr. Bacon's newly released book Radical Belonging - How To Survive and Thrive In An Unjust World (While Transforming It For the Better).  In this authentic consciousness raising memoir,  they ask us to explore the ways that power, privilege and disadvantage complicate the experience of our bodies.   Dr. Bacon invites us to an elevated conversation  about diet, size and weight that goes beyond  the self help approach and through the lens of social justice.  Their paradigm goes right to the root cause of our body struggles by evaluating the social conditioning and culture that gives rise to all the self harming habits, compulsions that derail our health.   It  lightens the burden of toxic shame and self blame but  it' s also  beautiful all to action for building a more compassionate and equitable world.Dr. Bacon's book touched me deeply because it goes to the heart of our shared struggle  - we all know in one way or another  the  pain of living a life based on not who we truly are  - the pain of not feeling at home in our skin -  safe in our very own bodies.  The cost of being deprived of this basic sense of belonging taxes our health and wellbeing on all levels.   Visit:  https://lindobacon.com

TITLE It’s Just a Cookie—Health At Every Size (HAES)   GUEST Marielle Berg, MFT   EPISODE OVERVIEW Marielle Berg, MFT, host of the podcast It’s Just a Cookie, talks about fat phobic language, body shaming, weight stigma and the false belief that body size is an indicator of psychological and emotional health. Marielle talks about the challenges of healthism, and labeling foods as healthy/unhealthy, which can result in compensatory eating. Marielle talks about the importance of having satisfaction and pleasure when eating, and learning to ask, “What am I hungry for?” We also talk about joyful movement vs. exercise and why this shift can be transformational.     HIGHLIGHTS Our culture uses fat-phobic language We discuss body shaming The language we use—fat overweight or people in larger bodies Often body size is used as an indicator of psychological or emotional health 98% of people who lose weight gain it back; if it was just about the weight, this number wouldn’t be so high Gaining weight is not necessarily due to poor self-esteem or trauma If dieting worked, we’d be thin by now 12-step programs talk about eating as a spiritual problem Compensatory eating is a reaction to restricting foods Healthism talks about what is healthy or not healthy. Some foods are off limits which can lead to compensatory eating In the therapy world often a fat client is infantilized, and it is organized around need and intake There is a false belief that we are all meant to be thin It’s ok to get comfort from food—maybe that’s chicken soup or birthday cake. Either is acceptable We need to ditch the diet mentality We want to look at intuitive eating With food, we want permission, satisfaction and pleasure How hungry am I? What am I hungry for? Intuitive eating is a process We want to look at joyful movement vs. exercise If you’re interviewing a therapist or a nutritionist you want to ask Is it weight loss or weight management How do they feel about weight loss You want someone who has a weight neutral point of view You might want someone who is certified in intuitive eating   GUEST BIO Marielle Berg is a psychotherapist and a coach who works with people healing from eating disorders, disorder eating and body shame through a Health at Every Size and Intuitive Eating lens.     PODCAST HOST Patricia Young hosts the podcast Unapologetically Sensitive, and works with Highly Sensitive People (HSPs) helping them to understand their HSP traits, and turning their perceived shortcomings into superpowers. Health At Every Size The act of dieting is the greater predictor of weight gain. Most of us know diets have failed us and continue to fail us. The older we get, the worse it gets... it’s not just failing us physically on the scale but also emotionally and mentally. In fact, the side effect of food and exercise obsession is leaving us feeling overwhelmed, stressed and terribly anxious. We want to be confident and healthy but we know diets don’t work... but we feel we have no other choice. Right?? Is there another choice other than dieting? Yes, there is... Chasing health instead of weight loss. Adopting compassionate and healing behaviors towards our whole self. The truth is weight management isn’t a guarantee of health. What?!?! Yup... and now enter Health At Every Size. A movement and scientific approach to health that isn’t focused on weight but instead what really drives health in humans. In this interview, Molly Bahr takes us through the Health At Every size basic principles. In this episode I discuss What is HAES: Health At Every Size 101 The collateral damage of dieting 'What Conventional Health Books Get Wrong, Leave Out, and Just Plain Fail to Understand about Weight' Last episode I shared my interview with one of the graduates of the Fall 2018 Going Beyond the Food Academy. It was a vulnerable one as she shared her personal journey going beyond the food and transforming her relationship to food and her body.  Indeed, her inspirational story proved that the journey to body confidence and peace with food and body image is possible and quickly achievable if you... If you get committed and invest in yourself! For Erin, the transformation led her to have peace of mind and body confidence... and yes, peace with food. She is now on her way to healing other parts of her life seeking the next best version of herself. Learn more about her story through this interview episode. Click here! EB014  The Radical Dietician - Lucy Aphramor  Lucy Aphramor is the Radical Dietician and the Naked Dietician. She believes we must fundamentally change the way we talk about health. In her Well Now approach, social justice and equality become the center and beginning of every conversation about health. For example, how can we talk about food and exercise without talking about access? Her approach integrates social factors, pays attention to trauma, and supports people to improve their overall wellbeing. The Well Now approach has effectively helped people of all shapes and sizes manage health conditions such as heart disease, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), high blood pressure and so much more. Additionally, she has effectively helped hundreds of people overcome body shame, eating disorders, and depression by staying committed  to promoting respect, dignity, and equality for all.  Lucy was the figurehead at the Health at Every Size movement and is co-author of the book Body Respect with Linda Bacon.  She joins me today to discuss her current model - Well Now - and what has inspired her to become a dietician. She shares her insights on how the stress of prejudice can play a role in health, how she brought the Health at Any Size approach to the National Health Service, and the impact historical trauma can have on health and so much more. This episode also uses clips from Lucy's poetry performance, The Naked Dietician.   “Telling your story to a caring witness has a metabolic impact... that switches off the stress response.” - Lucy Aphramor  This Week on the Every Body Podcast:  The importance of looking at all parts of a person’s story struggling to overcome an eating disorder  Studies that show that our health behaviors are between 5% to 25% of the difference in health inequalities  Why finding a way to bring social justice into the healthcare system is important  How changing the language around weight loss and weight correction can impact body positivity and self-esteem challenges around the world  How thinking about well-being from a justice, power, and historical trauma lens can impact the way we think about health  How Well Now helps people get away from the binary mindset about what’s healthy and what’s not healthy  Conversations that need to be happening in our society  Where she believes intervention needs to start    Connect with Lucy Aphramor:  Well-Founded  Body Respect: What Conventional Health Books Get Wrong, Leave Out, and Just Plain Fail to Understand about Weight book by Lucy Aphramor and Linda Bacon  Poetry Work  Rate, Share, & Inspire  Thank you for joining me this week on the Every Body podcast.
