Today I'm talking to Debra Benfield - a Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist (RDN), as well as a Certified Eating Disorder Registered Dietitian and Supervisor with over 30 years of experience in the field. Debra is the founder and owner of Body in Mind Nutrition, based in North Carolina, USA. She is passionate about the prevention and treatment of disordered eating and eating disorders and supporting people in feeling at peace with food, eating, and their bodies. Debra is also a Registered Yoga Teacher, Certified in Curvy Yoga, Accessible Yoga, and Trauma-Sensitive Yoga and has some Prescence-Based Coaching experience, which she integrates into her work. Debra has discovered the transformative power of somatic practices and yoga along with embodied and intuitive eating principles. With a focus on trauma-informed care and nourishing your inner child, she offers individual and family nutritional therapy, as well as group programs, workshops and retreats. When entering her 60s, 3 years ago, Debra started researching best practices for ageing with vitality and ease. Sadly, there was precious little out there which didn't focus on striving for maintenance of a youthful appearance, and of course controlling weight. This inspired Debra to create something different and she is now developing a new program for Pro-Aging without this detrimental focus. In this episode today, we explore the fantastic work Debra is doing in helping people heal and to develop a healthy relationship with food, their bodies and themselves, with a particular focus on the ‘elder woman' (over 55), and stepping into this place with empowerment and wisdom. I hope that you enjoy the conversation. Inhabit means to live in our bodies, not in our heads. When we learn to be present in our bodies, to move out of the obsessive thinking and into our feelings, we can learn to identify and meet our physical, emotional and spiritual needs. First, we must be aware that we are in the obsession, in the thinking, in the head. Then we can use our breath to bring our awareness into our body and explore what we are experiencing in our bodies.Debra Benfield is a Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist (RDN), as well as a Certified Eating Disorder Registered Dietitian, and IAEDP-approved Supervisor (CEDRD-S) with over 30 years of experience in the field. She is also a Registered Yoga Teacher, Certified in Curvy Yoga, Accessible Yoga, and Trauma-Sensitive Yoga. Debra also participated in 2 years of training in Presence-Based Coaching which she integrates into her offerings. Debra is committed to offering respectful, compassionate care with the intention to create a partnership with you as the expert of your own body. She has discovered the transformative power of somatic practices and yoga along with embodied/intuitive eating principles. With a focus on trauma-informed care and nourishing your inner child, she offers individual and family nutritional therapy, as well as group programs, workshops and retreats. Debra will start where you are and believes in small steps to support your whole-person well being. Debra supervises her RDN associates with the same philosophy and intention. She also provides professional supervision, coaching and professional development. Debra is committed to supporting best practices in both preventing and treating disordered eating for health and behavioral health care providers and founded the Winston-Salem Eating Disorder Coalition. She also is creating community for those who are on the path of Body Liberation by offering a free monthly Book Club that is open to the public. Debra's professional background includes providing medical nutrition therapy as a clinical nutritionist at Wake Forest University School of Medicine for many years and was a faculty member of the School of Medicine for 10 of those years. While at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, she was responsible for a wide range of tasks: nutrition education of medical professionals and patients, clinical nutrition services, research, and administration. She was also in private practice part-time during those years with a transition to full time private practice in 2005. This week’s episode is all about soul care -- self-care that takes care of the deepest part of yourself. I was so happy to talk about soul care with Curvy Yoga certified, community yoga teacher, Kirsten Johnson. We talked about how we take yoga off the mat and spend much more time these days practicing the other limbs of yoga. We talk about using yoga as a tool to help alleviate chronic pain in the body and how we both feel we are aging backwards. We talk about self-care being integrated into our daily lives by building our life from the ground up including how we create the lives exactly as we want using daily ritual practices.
Is yoga the answer to healing body image? Anna Guest-Jelley, creator and teacher of Curvy Yoga shares her journey from biofeedback for migraines to a life-long yoga practice. MEGABAMBI - Für mehr Selbstliebe, Lebensfreude & Selbstbewusstsein.
Meine Lieben, Yoga begleitet mich seit meiner Kindheit. One of the biggest questions I get from people is how to establish and maintain a regular yoga practice. And I understand why! This is a challenge for pretty much everyone, myself included. So in today's episode I'm digging into things that have helped me stay connected to my practice in the past, as well as what's helping me right now (yes, it's an ongoing exploration!). Then we get into how knowing where you are on the path of your yoga practice can free you from feeling like you're the only one who can't create a regular yoga practice that sticks no matter what and what can help you connect to your practice no matter where you are on your path. It didn't really dawn on me that the end of the decade is near until I heard someone mention it a month or so ago. At first I didn't think much about it. But then as some time passed, I started reflecting on everything that has unfolded in the last ten years. And whoa -- it's so much! Isn't that true for you, too? Wow. So in this episode I kick things off with a bonus Ask Me Anything question that came in after I recorded last week's episode. And then I dive into ten things I learned in the past decade. It was hard to narrow down my list! But I think where I landed is pretty all encompassing. Here's #7 to give you a preview: Very little of what you think are your unique flaws are actually unique. Or flaws. They're almost all called being human. At the end, I've got another invitation and giveaway for you, so be sure to listen all the way through! Many entrepreneurs stop themselves in their tracks by putting limits on what they can accomplish with sayings such as “I can’t do it, the market is already too saturated.” That is exactly what we are going to be talking about today. On today’s on-air strategy session I am joined by Tressa Krezner, a Reiki Master practitioner and yoga instructor. We discuss the myth of a saturated market and how Tressa’s business stands out from other yoga studios. We talk about: What yoga therapy is Who Tressa serves as her core audience Where Tressa plans to take her practices next Using Facebook, GoogleAds, and Instagram to target her audience The possibility of partnering up with other professionals Tressa’s current marketing message An inward journey and having a relationship with yourself What Tressa has learned about putting herself out there Mallory’s advice to Tressa about telling her story How Tressa handles networking events The process that Tressa uses to bring people in Launching a pilot and personally inviting past clients Showcasing the deeper part of yoga Why we need to personalize our business Building your authority About Tressa Krezner: Tressa is a Reiki Master practitioner and teacher with 10 years of experience. Anna Guest-Jelley is the founder of Curvy Yoga, an online yoga studio and teacher training center that helps people of all shapes and sizes find true acceptance and freedom, both on and off the mat. In today’s episode Anna touches upon so many of my favorite topics – including how accepting our bodies is not in fact the death sentence so many of us worry that it might be, but instead is a pathway towards greater levels of growth grounded in self-love. I have been lucky to have known Anna since the very inception of Curvy Yoga, and I never cease to be inspired by her gentle, kind, and deeply powerful approach to accepting the body that you are in right now. In today's podcast episode Anna and I talk about: What Real Body Love looks like for her right now. Anna's favorite practical ways to take care of herself. How Anna's yoga practice changed her relationship with her body. How teaching yoga changed her relationship with her body in a different way. The kind of language that's important to keep in mind to make sure group yoga classes are inclusive for people in all bodies. Kat and Kyle chat with Anna Guest-Jelley, the founder of Curvy Yoga. Anna shares her story—what inspired her to begin teaching and, ultimately, to found Curvy Yoga. She also offers tips for creating a sustainable home practice, accepting your body, and more.
We're practicing yoga daily the month of September to explore how yoga can help you connect to your body through breath and build the self-compassion you need to live with Body Kindness. (Important reminder: Connection is one of the three Body Kindness pillars… Connection to your body and connection to other people, places, and things that make up your world.) Anna Guest Jelley has connected yoga to many people who would have otherwise found yoga to be "not for them" because a crucial need was not met -- the instructors were not teaching for all sizes. Anna is a she-ro of mine because she saw a problem and addressed it. BOOM! Curvy Yoga was born! Tune in to hear us discuss the powers of movement that has nothing to do with weight loss. We chat about the value of creating spaces where weight loss talk is off the table -- even if people really are hoping to change their bodies. Finally, we discuss why connection is essential to help us get to know ourselves and our patterns that can help reduce judgments and shame. After listening to this show, you'll understand how the right fit yoga classes and experiences can absolutely open you up to reframing how movement fits into your life, the reasons why you move, and how you can show up for your body with compassion. Ooh, I loved getting to talk with Anna Guest-Jelley, founder of Curvy Yoga, for this week. We talked about so much good stuff: embodiment, spirituality, business evolution, creative instincts, body acceptance, permission. All of it around how to move forward when you know there's something more for you. And while it's easy to only think about evolution when you hit a place of burnout, it's actually critical to realize that - in creativity - we're all evolving all the time. So, yay! Evolution is exciting! Oh, and it happens whether we realize it or not, so let's all get in the driver's seat, eh?
