Naomi Karavani interviews journalist Danny Haiphong and takes a look at modern China, the propaganda being deployed against it by the US empire, and the reality that contrasts with that propaganda. Haiphong's journalism is published on his ‘Chronicles of Haiphong' Substack. There are many lies being spread about China across the West, and they're shading the people's understanding of what's happening in the world's most populous country. Haiphong explains how the Belt and Road Initiative really works, the new Cold War being developed by the NATO powers, and much more. Then, Karavani looks into the collapse of the US welfare system. This has become a punitive tool used to keep the working poor in line since Bill Clinton gutted it in the ‘90s and merciless bureaucrats got to take over. Karavani brings you some of the more shocking stories of the welfare system screwing over its poor victims. Jaffer Khan finishes off the show by looking into evidence that the Notorious BIG may have been assassinated by cops.
When Xiomara Castro won the election in Honduras the other week, it was a repudiation of the 2009 US-backed coup that overthrew her husband, Manuel Zelaya. Naomi Karavani reports on the elections and what they mean for the global left. Castro's husband had ruled as a centrist democrat. He was removed from power in 2009 over small reforms that offended those in power. After a decade of corrupt leadership from the business community Castro won power as a democratic socialist and the imperialists are mad about it. Karavani also reports on recent news around the conservative war against abortion rights in the US, debt collectors being allowed to harass people on social media, Joe Biden's record on climate change, and more. Anders Lee looks into Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg's inaction when it comes to addressing the supply chain shortages the US is facing. He shows us some of the actions that the secretary of transportation could take to free up the flow of goods in the market. Of course, the neoliberal mindset would never allow soldiers like Pete to improve the working conditions of the workers who keep this nation's transportation infrastructure working. We're going to have to settle with system failure. Finally, Jaffer Khan exposes how the Mormon Church has taken over Utah's social welfare system. People have been forced to convert to Mormonism to receive their benefits and have faced other forms of discrimination from the church.
Naomi Karavani sits down with Ben Burgis to discuss the philosophy professor's latest book, ‘Christopher Hitchens: What He Got Right, How He Went Wrong, and Why He Still Matters'. Hitchens began his intellectual career as a socialist and ended it as a supporter of the War on Terror. Karavani and Burgis look at some of Hitchens' career highlights such as exposing Bill Clinton, Mother Teresa, and more. They also get into what started his rightward slide and how 9/11 broke his brain. Anders Lee and Jaffer Khan join Karavani to look over some of the missed headlines from the week. General Stanley McChrystal wrote a book about doing business without having a business career. A billionaire has asked the Olympics to be more accommodating to yacht owners. And Japanese cops have been stealing from the American playbook when it comes to discrimination.
Microwork is a rising form of labor exploitation being deployed by some of the world's best-known corporations. It's online work requiring the performance of repetitive, often menial tasks for minimal pay, and there are big players among the ranks of those who offer it, including Jeff Bezos' Mechanical Turk. Naomi Karavani takes a look at the phenomenon and introduces us to some of those who know the industry all too well. Their tasks includes the likes of identifying and labeling the contents of images, or translating or transcribing audio. Vulnerable people such as refugees and those living in the Occupied Territories are the target workers for the microwork industry, and abuse is common, she discovers, extending in some cases to harassment. Later in the program, Karavani covers the victimization argument around which Ghislaine Maxwell's lawyers are constructing their case, Joe Biden's flippant lies about believing in a waiver for the intellectual property of Covid-19 vaccines, and more. Jaffer Khan reports on the recent victory for Indian farmers, who had been engaged in a massive protest campaign to overturn reforms that had opened up their industry to exploitation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi finally gave into their pressure and reversed the changes, but they've chosen to continue their campaign in order to exact yet more concessions. Anders Lee dives into the debate about inflation in the US. America has seen 6% inflation in the past year and the talking heads at the top are taking this as an opportunity to blame the rise on welfare spending. But is that really the whole story? Lee takes apart the arguments of economist Larry Summers.
Lee Camp exposes Bill Gates and the hidden side of his capitalist projects. The corporate media spend hours honoring his benevolent philanthropy, but rich men never give anything away without a string attached and Gates' empire has strings connected to dark activities around the world. After listening to Lee, you'll understand why it's safe to assume that none of Gates' charity is intended to help people. His pharmaceutical interests push unsafe drugs on the global south that drive profits back into Gates' pockets. His agricultural interests build monopolies that harm local farmers. And the list goes on. Camp also provides context for the recent release of the chief financial officer of the Chinese technology company Huawei. Naomi Karavani goes over the lessons of a new book about the US drone wars. ‘Humane' by Samuel Moyn is a deep dive into the drone bombing campaign made famous under President Barack Obama and it should make you furious. Karavani, fortunately, makes it funny. Anders Lee finishes off the show with a recent legal victory for student athletes in the NCAA. Popular student athletes create massive profits for colleges that are protected from properly compensating them. But support for the rights of student athletes have become more popular in recent years. They are still in an uphill battle but early steps have been taken.
Naomi Karavani introduces viewers to a retro development in corporate totalitarian power. ‘Company towns' were made famous by coal towns where miners and their families would live in houses, shop at grocery stores, spend independent ‘scrip' currencies, and send their kids to schools owned by their employers. Modern corporations are trying to bring back this practice in towns across the US. She then reports on the US' quick return to Afghanistan, insider trading from Congress, and more. Jaffer Khan joins Naomi to cover developments from the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in Jerusalem. Anders Lee and Karavani discuss threats to the endangered red wolf in the US, and the extension of the eviction moratorium.
Amanda Yee is the host of the podcast Radio Free Amanda, where she tackles anti-China propaganda in politics, culture and the media. Anders Lee interviews Yee on this episode that's hosted by Naomi Karavani. Lee and Yee look into the propaganda surrounding Chinese athletes at the Olympics, the development of – and Western backlash to – China's Belt and Road Initiative, the reality about what's happening in Xinjiang and why the US is building a campaign around it, Edward Said's concept of Orientalism, and more. Karavani is joined by Jaffer Khan for a continuation of a very American story. The Sheriff's Office in Pasco County, Florida has undertaken a “Pre-Crime” program that Karavani and Khan covered last week. Khan got his hands on a letter received by some of the parents of children targeted by the program. The program uses illegally collected data to target young people for police harassment in a clear attempt to intimidate their families into leaving town. The letter reads like a threat from a sheriff to a family that hasn't been accused or found guilty of a crime.

Naomi Karavani hosts Redacted Tonight this week. A few corporations have taken near-monopoly control over the foods we buy in grocery stores. Karavani exposes how these special interests have managed to win insane subsidies for their businesses and force processed food products on society. Mark Horvath is the founder and director of InvisiblePeople.tv. The non-profit organization was built to highlight the plight of people living on the streets in the US. Horvath had experienced homelessness and held a career in the TV industry in Los Angeles before the 2008 economic collapse.

Naomi Karavani hosts Redacted Tonight this week. A few corporations have taken near-monopoly control over the foods we buy in grocery stores. Karavani exposes how these special interests have managed to win insane subsidies for their businesses and force processed food products on society. It's a story of lobbying, bribes, and propaganda that lets these corporations get away with putting trash on our tables while paying the people who produce their products peanuts. Then, Karavani covers Big Pharma's push for bigger profits from the vaccine, the FBI's latest invasion of your privacy in tandem with Big Tech, and much more. Jaffer Khan joins Naomi Karavani to look into the resignation of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. The corrupt governor will leave power after an investigation exposed the prolific sexual harassment that women working with him were subjected to. Khan goes into the many reasons he should've resigned years ago. Anders Lee reports on the real reasons that the US is facing a “labor shortage” and how corporations have gone about addressing their problem. More companies are turning their attention to prison labor as workers remain resistant to returning to low-wage jobs while they have other options.
Lee Camp sits down with investigative journalist Ann Garrison to learn about US imperialist goals in Ethiopia. Garrison is a contributing editor at Black Agenda Report and has been reporting on the civil war in the country. The US' intentions in Ethiopia can be mapped out with a look at its history of “humanitarian” intervention and its actions during the genocide in Rwanda. Naomi Karavani reports on the recently exposed NSO Group's Pegasus surveillance software. Leaks revealed the scope of the Israeli operation that targeted politicians, journalists, and activists around the world. Karavani looks into how Joe Biden and friends are helping to silence the story.
Lee Camp looks into how Western notions of authoritarianism are disconnected from reality. The talking heads of imperialist propaganda will attack the enemies of US empire – with or without evidence – for economic inequality, a lack of freedom, illegitimate elections and whatever they think they can get away with saying. The same talking heads will also ignore or justify the existence of those same problems in the US and the societies of its allies. Camp reports on the development of a new gargantuan nuclear weapons program. Anders Lee takes on the state of US-Cuba relations. President Joe Biden has taken the same hardline stance as Donald Trump by maintaining the embargo. This position moves away from Barack Obama's policies that sought to cool tensions between the neighboring nations. Naomi Karavani and Camp discuss the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse. The unfolding story started this week when mercenaries raided his compound and murdered the country's illegitimate and heavily protested president. Karavani also covers the latest revelations in the prosecution of Julian Assange.
Naomi Karavani hosts this VIP special. Anders Lee interviews Gigi Droesch, who organizes with NOlympics LA. The Olympics has historically had a negative impact on the poor in the communities it comes to. With an LA Olympics planned for 2028, Droesch and her cohort of organizers hope to shine a light on that history and convince the city of LA not to go through with hosting the event. Naomi Karavani reports on the British lawsuit that would force Uber to treat its drivers like employees. Uber’s response to this lawsuit was to threaten to stop operating anywhere that wants them to give the people who make money for their app the basic respect workers deserve. Karavani also reports on the corporate response to people not wanting to work in their low-paying industries. The rich are shocked that they’re finding it hard to pay poverty wages for terrible jobs. Natalie McGill looks into how Big Tech is plotting to defang privacy bills introduced across the nation after California passed one last year.
Dan Kovalik just published a book about how the US justifies imperialist violence under the guise of humanitarian intervention. He sits down with Lee Camp this week to discuss the book and how it applies to the US’s current situation. Under Trump, we’ve seen how the first time the media embraced him was after he bombed Syria in the middle of a US-Russian proxy war disguised as a Syrian civil war. They also take swings at Obama's UN Ambassador, the ostensibly left-wing Samantha Power, whose hands ended up drenched in blood in Libya. Their wide-ranging conversation exposes the bloody character of US empire-building. Naomi Karavani takes a look at how US TV’s reality documentary ‘Live PD’ encouraged police malfeasance. The ‘copaganda’ was canceled in the wake of the George Floyd uprising, but Karavani shows how shocking it is that it lasted so long. Natalie McGill reports on a piece of mind-blowing history: a successful black community in the middle of Manhattan that was demolished and replaced with Central Park. This is part of the story of how white supremacy still reigned, even after slavery was officially over.
Naomi Karavani is the guest host of this episode of VIP. Karavani, Lee Camp and Natalie McGill open the show with a panel where they compare the coronavirus pandemic to former crises in the US, how our society is relying on low-wage workers to continue functioning throughout this pandemic, and how the powerful are measuring lives against economic stability. Naomi looks into pandemic profiteering, some dirty recipients of stimulus money, and the tragedy unfolding on Rikers Island during the pandemic.
