Kellye Garrett's first novel, Hollywood Homicide, was named one of BookBub's Top 100 Crime Novels of All Time. In addition to receiving starred reviews from Publishers Weekly and Library Journal, it won the Agatha, Anthony, Lefty, and Independent Publisher “IPPY” awards for best first novel. It was also nominated for the Macavity Award for Best First Mystery Novel and Barry award for Best Paperback Original. Kellye previously spent 8 years working in Hollywood, including a stint writing for the CBS drama Cold Case. People were always surprised to learn what she did for a living—probably because she seemed way too happy to be brainstorming ways to murder people. A former magazine editor, Kellye holds a B.S. in magazine writing from Florida A&M and an MFA in screenwriting from USC's famed film school. Having moved back to her native New Jersey, she spends her mornings commuting to Manhattan for her job at a leading media company—while still happily brainstorming ways to commit murder. Her latest novel is award-winning Like A Sister about a black woman in New York City looking into the mysterious overdose of her estranged reality star sister. In addition to being featured on the TODAY show, the suspense novel was a Book of the Month April 2022 selection, the Oxygen channel's July Book Club pick, an Edgar award finalist for Best Novel and Lefty award winner for Best Mystery. Learn more at kellyegarrett.com.Intro reel, Writing Table Podcast 2024 Outro RecordingFollow the Writing Table:On Twitter/X: @writingtablepcEverywhere else: @writingtablepodcastEmail questions or tell us who you'd like us to invite to the Writing Table: writingtablepodcast@gmail.com.

WALTER MOSLEY - CWA DIAMOND DAGGER WINNER - chats to Paul Burke about EVERY MAN A KING, his writing, his characters, personal inspiration, American politics, good thoughts for writers and hope & belief. The most prestigious Dagger of all, the Diamond Dagger is for a lifetime contribution to crime writing in the English language and is nominated by CWA members.WALTER MOSLEY was born in LA in 1952. His African-American father Leroy from Louisiana joined the great migration north. His mother Ella, of Russian Jewish descent, was politically engaged which resonates in Mosley's work.  Mosley took up writing at 34 with Gone Fishin' but it was Devil in a Blue Dress that was first published to acclaim in 1990, winning the John Creasey New Blood Dagger in 1991. Set in LA in 1948, Easy Rawlins is facing a murder charge when he takes a job searching for a white woman. Then stone-cold killer Mouse arrives from Houston, he's more terrifying than any of the chiselled giants in Mosley's novels. Devil in a Blue Dress was filmed in 1995 starring Denzil Washington as Easy and Jennifer Beal as Mosley's first femme fatale Daphne Monet, Don Cheadle chills the blood as Mouse. Yet there are too few screen incarnations of Mosley books. Lawrence Fishburne played Socrates Fortlow in 1998's Always Outnumbered, Always Outgunned and The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey starring Samuel Jackson appeared on Apple TV+ in 2022. Mosley has worked as a scriptwriter on, amongst other shows, Snowfall, 2018, and Star Trek Discovery, 2019. In all Mosley has written 60+ books; crime, literary, sci-fi and erotic fiction, two graphic novels, two plays, short stories and six nonfiction titles. He has often written features for the New Yorker and The Nation.Mosley's fiction centres on irresistibly engaging antiheroes, one would be an achievement but five such is remarkable - PI Easy Rawlins (15 novels), ex-con Socrates Fortlow (3), New York bad man making amends Leonid McGill (6), Fearless Jones (3) and ex-cop Joe King Oliver (2). The novels are about race, rampant capitalism and inequality in American society. Mosley lives in LA and Brooklyn and engages with the history of both places. He chronicles America, post-WWII to the present day, the story of African-American America and the lives of the poorest people in society. Mosley has received acclaim throughout his career including the Mystery Writers of America Grand Master Award in 2016. Down the River unto the Sea, 2018, won an Edgar the following year and Mosley was the first black male recipient of the National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters in 2020. There's also the PEN America Lifetime Achievement Award, the NAACP Image Award (3 times) and a Grammy and this list is by no means exhaustive. In June 2018 Mosley with Kellye Garrett and Gigi Pandian set up Crime Writers of Color, a collective for authors from underrepresented backgrounds, now with over 350 members internationally. The organisation won the prestigious Raven Award from the Mystery Writers of America at the Edgars in April. He has no intention of putting down his pen...Recommendations Killer Of Sheep - D. Summary: Grab your phones and log onto Instagram, Holly and Devin dive into social media themes today! They investigate how social media can be a hindrance and a help for protagonists in modern novels. Holly and Devin both agree that leaning on miscommunication from social media can feel lazy and frustrating, but when used well, social media accents can build intrigue and serve the plot well. Holly generally hates modern books and will avoid any book that prints text bubbles, but Devin's romances are rife with texts, emails, and DMs.  Also, we have officially launched the Hearts & Daggers Online Shop on Bookshop.org! That means you can purchase books you hear us talk about on the show - or any other books you're looking to read - via our dedicated store link and your purchase will directly support our show.  Topics Discussed: The Dagger (4:51): Holly discussed Like a Sister by Kellye Garrett, which follows Lena as she tries to piece together what really happened to her reality TV star and influencer sister, Desiree, after she was found dead in a playground in the Bronx, NYC. Her key takeaways were:  Social media is an integral part of the novel; Garrett not only explores celebrity and the way social media allows us only small glimpses into someone's life, but also how misinterpretation can impact those closest to us.  Lena and Desiree are half-sisters who could not have had more different upbringings; Lena has a graduate degree from Columbia and lives a quiet life, while Desiree was more privileged, reckless, and enjoyed time in the public eye.  The book oscillates between Lena's first-person voice as she figures out her sister's death and glimpses at Desiree's recent social media posts, counting forward to the night she died.  The Heart (21:26): Devin discussed Chef's Kiss by T.J. Alexander, a book that follows Simone Larkspur as she is shoved into the limelight with her outgoing coworker Ray Lyton to record videos that are designed to revitalize the old-school cookbook publisher The Discerning Chef. Her key takeaways were: While social media isn't the focal point of the book, it acts as a catalyst for the initial plot and to augment tension and call out the dynamic between Simone and Ray through youtube comments, video feedback etc.  Alexander examines public vs. private life through the lens of Ray coming out as nonbinary, wanting to be open, and being silenced and mistreated by the leadership at The Discerning Chef.  While the book is told from Simone's point of view, the true star and driving force behind the plot is Ray; their experience and perseverance in fighting toward the life they deserve and imagined is admirable and informative. Please note there are trigger warnings for transphobia, misgendering, and homophobia in the novel.  Hot On the Shelf (43:02): Holly: The Change by Kirsten Miller Devin: Part of Your World by Abby Jimenez What's Making Our Hearts Race (47:04): Holly: Everything Everywhere All At Once starring Michelle Yeoh Devin: Twilight Films on Amazon Prime  Instagram: @heartsanddaggerspod Website: www.heartsanddaggerspod.com If you like what you hear, please tell your friends and rate and review us on Apple Podcasts and Spotify so that we can find our perfect audience.

I found out she'd died from the New York Daily News.”When the body of disgraced reality TV star Desiree Pierce is found on a playground in the Bronx the morning after her 25th birthday party, the police and the media are quick to declare her death an overdose. It's a tragedy, certainly, but not a crime. But Desiree's half-sister Lena Scott knows that can't be the case. A graduate student at Columbia, Lena has spent the past decade forging her own path far from the spotlight, but some facts about Desiree just couldn't have changed since their childhood. And Desiree would never travel above 125th Street. So why is no one listening to her?Despite the bitter truth that the two haven't spoken in two years, torn apart by Desiree's partying and by their father, Mel, a wealthy and influential hip-hop mogul, Lena becomes determined to find justice for her sister, even if it means untangling her family's darkest secrets—or ending up dead herself.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. In this episode, I speak with author Kellye Garrett about her novel Hollywood Homicide. We talk about her inspiration for the novel, how she creates her characters, her journey into being a hybrid author, and the joys of cursing. ***Kellye Garrett is the acclaimed author of the upcoming Like A Sister (Mulholland Books) suspense novel in which no one bats an eye when a disgraced reality TV star is found dead in the Bronx—except her estranged half-sister, whose refusal to believe the official story leads her on an increasingly dangerous search for the truth. She's also the author of the Detective by Day mysteries about a semi-famous, mega-broke black actress who takes on the deadliest role of her life: Private Detective. The first, Hollywood Homicide, won the Agatha, Anthony, Lefty and Independent Publisher “IPPY” awards for best first novel and was named one of BookBub's Top 100 Crime Novels of All Time. The second, Hollywood Ending, was featured on the TODAY show's Best Summer Reads of 2019 and was nominated for both Anthony and Lefty awards. Prior to writing novels, Kellye spent eight years working in Hollywood, including a stint writing for Cold Case. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for Sisters in Crime and is a co-founder of Crime Writers of Color. This is a first for It's a Mystery podcast! Award-winning mystery author Kellye Garrett reads to us from a work-in-progress, which is a first for this show. When the publisher of her first two mysteries shuttered their doors, Kellye pivoted and began working on this domestic thriller. You'll hear her read from that book and then we discuss her two Detective By Day books and how they are still impacting readers, the #ownvoices movement, and how writing for the TV show Cold Case helped Kellye when it came to writing fiction. This week's mystery author Kellye Garrett’s Hollywood Homicide, about a semi-famous, mega-broke black actress, won the Anthony, Agatha and Lefty for best first novel. It’s also one of BookBub’s “Top 100 Crime Novels of All Time.” The second, Hollywood Ending, was featured on the TODAY show’s Best Summer Reads of 2019 and was nominated for both Anthony and Lefty awards. It's also one of BookBub's top 100 crime novels of all time. The second in the series, Hollywood ending was featured on Today Show's best summer reads of 2019 and was nominated for both the Anthony and lefty awards. Kelly serves on Sisters In Crime's national board, and is cofounder of Crime Writers of Color. Welcome to the show. Kellye. Kellye: Thank you so much for having me, Alexandra. Alexandra: Oh, it's my pleasure. So you're going to read to us today. This is kind of unusual and I'm so excited. You're going to read to us from a work in progress. Do you want to set it up for us? Kellye: Sure. It's a bit more serious than my other books, but it's a stand alone. It's like a Lori Raider day or a Megan Miranda type book. Still very much about a woman, first person narrative, looking into a mystery. Alexandra: As we mentioned in your bio, you've got two books in the Detective by Day series. Tell us why you've switched to do this book about different characters. Kellye: For two reasons. First, my publisher closed, Midnight Ink, before my third book came out. And they still have the rights for the first two. So, for right now I can't write any more of those books. And although I've always loved cozies, I started reading a lot more domestic suspense, domestic thriller type books, like I was saying, Megan Miranda, Lloyd Raider Day. I really fell in love with the genre. But one thing I realized that there aren't really any Black women in those books. And I think there's certain reasons why. And so I wanted to write a book like that, but how Black woman would have it happen to her. Alexandra: That brings me to my next question then. Tell us about the hashtag #ownvoices movement. I don't know anything about it. I did a little bit of research when I was preparing for our interview. Why don't you tell us about it? Kellye: Sure. A few years ago, maybe like five or six, there was a big push, especially in for stories of more diverse, main characters. And, what happened is a lot of straight CIS white people started writing books with more diverse, main characters, which is a great, nothing wrong with that. But what happens is that they would sell the book, their book and then went to an actual person who was of that group tried to sell it they were told we already have a book like that. So the idea of #ownvoices - people of their own culture, writing about their culture - grew out of that.

Barbara Neely's page on her publisher's site A great interview with Barbara Neely conducted by mystery author Kellye Garrett in May 2019. Today I am featuring the Mystery Writers of America's 2020 Grand Master Award recipient, Barbara Neely. Barbara Neely is the author of the Blanche White mystery series. Her series features Blanche White, a smart and brave black woman who works as a maid who takes on the role of amateur detective to solve murders that occur in the homes she is working in. Set in a time when the main work that was available for black people and especially black women was to work as domestic servants. Blanche lives in a world where safety and meeting your basic needs is always a challenging trek. Plus, Blanche must deal with other difficult issues and on top of all that, she must help solve a murder. Blanche is the classic amateur detective who is often the smartest person in the room who everyone overlooks and underestimates. Barbara Neely's four books in this wonderful series will easily feed your need for a good cozy / amateur sleuth mystery. The books in the series are: Blanche on the Lam Blanche Among the Talented Tenth Blanche Cleans Up Blanche Passes Go Barbara Neely is a lifelong activist. She designed and directed the first community-based corrections facility for women in Pennsylvania and was the director of Women for Economic Justice, a Boston-based women's advocacy organization. She also produced radio programs for Africa News Service and was the host of Commonwealth Journal, an award-winning weekly interview program on the radio station of the University of Massachusetts, Boston. Ms. Neely also wrote many other short stories that were published in various anthologies and magazines. I reviewed Blanche on the Lam and I am including a link to that episode here. It was a wonderful read and for audio book fans, all the books in the series are available as audio books. I am including links to Barbara Neely's publishers, some other interesting articles and a great video where Ms. Neely was at Book World Praque 2012 signing copies of her book Blanch on the Lam that was recently published in Czech. In the video she states that fiction was a good place to do activism and Blanche was the perfect character to help people examine the issues that were important to her. https://youtu.be/62wGFRzYS9s Sadly, Barbara Neely passed away last week. We lost a great woman and artist, but we are blessed by her works. I am so happy she was able to receive the MWA Award. And true to her spirit, when she heard that she won the award she said: "MWA Grand Master! I hope this doesn't mean I have to relinquish my position as Empress Regnant of the Multiverse." So, we celebrate the life and work of our Empress Regnant of the Multiverse and creator of the Blanche White mystery series, Barbara Neely.

We focus on two books this week the first is HOLLYWOOD HOMICIDE by Kellye Garrett. Kellye's first novel, Hollywood Homicide, won Agatha, Anthony, Lefty and IPPY awards for best first novel. It was also nominated for Macavity and Barry awards. Hollywood Ending, her second book in the Detective by Day mystery series, was chosen a best mystery of 2018 by Suspense Magazine, Book Riot and CrimeReads, which called it the most fun book of the year. In addition to writing, she currently serves on the national Board of Directors of Sisters in Crime as its Publicity Liaison. Then we highlight KINFOLK KILLERS by L.V. Nield. Prior to retiring with her husband to Vancouver Island, Canada, L.V. Nield practiced law for many years in New York State. Working primarily in Elder Law, Laura was always aware of the vulnerability of seniors. KINFOLK KILLERS - An Olive Reader Mystery, while a work of pure fiction, incorporates potential abuses of the old and frail.

I peeked over the stairs and saw my sister Jenna's reflection in the glass. I considered ignoring it and sneaking back into my office until my cell phone started vibrating in my pocket. My family and the Borg from Star Trek had a lot in common. Both demanded complete assimilation and resistance was definitely futile.  -- V.M. Burns, The Plot is Murder I am so excited to interview debut author V.M. Burns. Her new cozy series begins with The Plot is Murder, as her protagonist, Samantha, starts a new chapter in her own life and opens a mystery bookstore. Valerie herself is starting a new chapter as a published author with this book, and she's taking the publishing world by storm. Four books in this series are slated for publication over the next two years. In addition to that, she's launching a second series about murders in the dog club arena through Kensington's e-book imprint. In the Dog House, the first in the series, comes out in August of 2018. And if you, like me, did not know what Conformation is, the American Kennel Club is happy to tell you. Not content with two series, Valerie has a third one coming from Camel Press in July of 2018. Travellin’ Shoes is the first in a series of cozy mysteries where all the titles are from Negro Spirituals. Each book includes unique and original soul food recipes that provide a taste of the African American culture depicted in each book. Oh, be still my heart -- and tummy! You don't have to wait to find recipes from Valerie: her website already features several recipes, and more are to come. The Plot is Murder also has an eccentric community and Valerie talks about developing the characters, especially Nana Jo, a vibrant woman of a certain age with a circle of equally-intrepid older women friends. Finally, Valerie gives a shout out (in both The Plot is Murder and in the interview) to her favorite writers: Rex Stout, Agatha Christie, and Dorothy Gilman. There's just so much to love here. We also both give a big squee of love to Kellye Garrett's debut, Hollywood Homicide. You can check out my interview with Kellye here. As I write this, Hollywood Homicide has just been named one of BOLO Books Top Reads of 2017. Woot! As always, if you'd rather read than listen, the transcript is below. Enjoy! -- Laura *********************************************************************************************** Transcript of interview with V.M. Burns Laura Brennan: My guest today is author V.M. Burns, whose debut cozy, The Plot is Murder, launches a wonderful new series about starting over, chasing dreams, and -- of course -- murder. Valerie, thank you for joining me. V.M. Burns: Thank you so much for having me. I'm excited to be here. LB: How did you get started writing? VMB: I think it just came naturally from my love of cozy mysteries. I think for anybody who reads cozy mysteries as much as I do, you probably start thinking, boy, it would be really great if there was a series about -- blah, blah, blah. Or, boy, I wish that series had ended differently and it had gone in this other direction. And then you just start going there. And eventually, you just sit down and say, well, you know what? Maybe I could write that. And then you do. LB: So, The Plot is Murder is the first in your Mystery Bookshop Series. VMB: Yes. LB: For someone who hasn't yet had the pleasure of picking it up, what would we need to know about it in order to follow our conversation? VMB: This first book,The Plot is Murder, introduces the reader to the protagonist, Samantha Washington. Samantha is in her mid-30s and she has been a hard-working individual her whole life, her and her husband, Leon. He was a cook and she was a high school English teacher. But they always had this dream of opening a mystery bookstore. One day, Leon dies. He's diagnosed with a terminal illness and he dies. And they realize that life is short, and it's too short not to follow your dreams.

The copy was straight to the point. Wanted: Information on the hit-and-run murder of Haley Joseph. Tuesday, August 18th, 11:30 p.m., Vermont Ave near Hillside St. And across the bottom, right over her press-on French manicure, $15,000 reward. I peered closer at the billboard, looking for a hint that this was a brilliant marketing scheme for some new movie. I was tempted to call the number, sure I'd hear some prerecorded message letting me know what time and day it would be airing on Lifetime. But I realized this was real. The address was right up the block. They wouldn't put the cross streets on there if it was for some silly movie. Haley Joseph had died. -- Kellye Garrett, Hollywood Homicide Such a delight to chat with Kellye Garrett, whose marvelous debut, Hollywood Homicide, launches the investigative career of Dayna Anderson, a semi-famous, mega-broke black actress. A cozy sensibility combines with a fresh voice and an insider's look at Hollywood to create a terrific new series. Kellye will, in the near future, be giving away an annotated copy of the novel -- and in the meantime, she's posting the annotations online. So if you needed another reason to visit her website, well, that's a fun one. ;) We talk about a lot of authors we like, including Alexia Gordon, whom I had the pleasure of interviewing. You can find our chat right here. Kellye gives a shout out to her fellow Chicks on the Case, where she blogs, including Ellen Byron (whose Destination Mystery interview you can listen to here), Cynthia Kuhn, Vickie Fee, Lisa Q. Mathews, and Marla Cooper. She also admires Sue Grafton and Janet Evanovich, and one she terms "an old-school favorite," the beloved Joan Hess. Me, I give a shout out to Steph Cha, who also has a series about a woman who grows into being a private eye, and set in Los Angeles, although her series has a far more Noir sensibility, as does Danny Gardner's debut novel. Kellye also mentions V.M. Burns, whose book is not yet out (though you can pre-order) and I am thrilled to say that I have an interview scheduled with her for her launch day in November, so stay tuned! So many books! So little time! As always, if you'd rather read than listen, the transcript is below. Enjoy! -- Laura Transcript of Interview with Kellye Garrett Laura Brennan: My guest today is Kellye Garrett, whose debut mystery, Hollywood Homicide, is the first in a cozy series featuring Dayna Anderson, a former actress hot on the trail of a hit-and-run driver. Library Journal’s August Debut of the Month, and full of warm friendships and quirky characters, Hollywood Homicide is a lighthearted mystery that delivers surprises, twists, and an insider’s view of Hollywood. Kellye, thank you for joining me. Kellye Garrett: Thank you for having me. LB: Hollywood Homicide is your first novel, but being a novelist is not your first writing career. KG: Right. I've been writing professionally my whole career. I started off as a magazine editor for a publication called Vibe Magazine. And then I wasn't really happy just writing about people doing cool stuff, I wanted to do cool stuff myself. So I went to film school at USC, and then I spent eight years in Hollywood working in television, I did some developing, and I also was staff for the TV show Cold Case for a year. After that, you know, Hollywood is not the most secure place, for job security -- LB: No, I tell people that if they want job security, Hollywood is not the place to be because your contract in television, your contract is actually in weeks. KG: Yes, it's one of those things where you could, your show could be canceled tomorrow and you could not work again for years. And so when I turned 30, I wanted more job security so I came back home to New Jersey and I started over into more corporate writing. And so now I'm a communications writer for a media company in New York. LB: I remember Cold Case. I loved Cold Case. KG: People,
