2003 film by Ron Shelton

Looks like we're going to be here a while, let's get going on some podcast - Dave takes 2003's Hollywood Homicide off the shelf. Phil wonders how so many talented people could make such a waste of time. Harrison Ford phoning it in, literally! Ron Shelton losing the charm of his early films by delivering a sloppy plot. Dave remembers this movie more fondly and tries to defend the choices made (but fails) and may drive Phil crazy by the end.
Kellye Garrett's first novel, Hollywood Homicide, was named one of BookBub's Top 100 Crime Novels of All Time. In addition to receiving starred reviews from Publishers Weekly and Library Journal, it won the Agatha, Anthony, Lefty, and Independent Publisher “IPPY” awards for best first novel. It was also nominated for the Macavity Award for Best First Mystery Novel and Barry award for Best Paperback Original. Kellye previously spent 8 years working in Hollywood, including a stint writing for the CBS drama Cold Case. People were always surprised to learn what she did for a living—probably because she seemed way too happy to be brainstorming ways to murder people. A former magazine editor, Kellye holds a B.S. in magazine writing from Florida A&M and an MFA in screenwriting from USC's famed film school. Having moved back to her native New Jersey, she spends her mornings commuting to Manhattan for her job at a leading media company—while still happily brainstorming ways to commit murder. Her latest novel is award-winning Like A Sister about a black woman in New York City looking into the mysterious overdose of her estranged reality star sister. In addition to being featured on the TODAY show, the suspense novel was a Book of the Month April 2022 selection, the Oxygen channel's July Book Club pick, an Edgar award finalist for Best Novel and Lefty award winner for Best Mystery. Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. Today we talk about the movie star. The person who if you looked up “movie star” in the dictionary there would be a picture of him. Robert Redford! Today we talk the esteemed career of the quintessential movie star. Our B-Sides include: The Hot Rock, The Great Waldo Pepper, Havana, and The Last Castle. Our guest today is Blake Howard, podcast producer, host, and really good guy. Check out One Heat Minute Productions for everything new and relevant in Blake's world. We discuss a million things, from why The Hot Rock is so hard to find, to the airplane stunts in The Great Waldo Pepper, to why Havana doesn't work. There's an investigation into the politics of The Last Castle, a brief celebration of Lena Olin, and a quick rave for Jordan Harper's searing short story “My Savage Year.” Additional topics include that upcoming City of Hope release, why Peter Yates is “slow vibes central,” why great screenwriter William Goldman knew why The Great Waldo Pepper underwhelmed at the box office (from his book Adventures in the Screen Trade), and how exactly the A-Side The Natural literally looks like nostalgia. Finally, we mention why Raul Julia didn't take a credit on Havana, we reference that superb Scott Frank New Yorker profile, proclaim ourselves defenders of Hollywood Homicide, and discuss the end of Redford's career. Hollywood Homicide is a delightful mismatched buddy cop comedy. Unfortunately, everyone hated it, including its star—Harrison Ford. Written and directed by Ron Shelton, of Bull Durham and Tin Cup fame, Hollywood Homicide channels the real life exploits of one-time Los Angeles policeman Robert Souza. Judging by some of the movie's subplots, reality is indeed stranger than fiction. Speaking of those weaving narrative points, the abundance of them plague the film. There is just too much going on. That is probably why critics and audiences had such distaste for it. At 30% on Rotten Tomatoes—with an even lower audience score—Hollywood Homicide is one of Ford's worst rated films. It is also one of his lowest grossing. On a budget of $75 million, it failed to break even $52 million. Book it as a flop, Danno! Now, sit back, get fancy with a Stella Artois, and practice your big monologue! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Bling Blake, and Capt. Justin swears this movie is good. Jake isn't so sure. I guess it's up to you to decide? Today's guest, former Hollywood Homicide detective Steve Hodel, has solved over 300 cases in his career. He had retired with many honors when his father died and he was confronted with his most difficult and most emotionally challenging case ever. He discovered that his father George Hodel had been one of the most terrifying, prolific and diabolical serial killers to ever live. Perhaps George Hodel's most notorious victim was Elizabeth Short, aka the Black Dahlia, whose nude, surgically bisected body was found in a vacant lot in Los Angeles on the morning of January 15th, 1947. Are you a "T-U-R-T-L-E Power" lad or a "Ninja Rap" kid? How you answer may determine what kind of fan you are of the 1990 live-action version of "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" and its two direct sequels from 1991 and 1993. If you said "Ninja Rap," then chances are your feelings about early 90s Turtle Mania is either ironic or steeped in heavy nostalgia. It's no secret that one Old Millennials Remember Movies host is one of the more die hard Ninja Turtles fans in the world (and you may find a few episodes of the sporadically recorded "Ninja Turtle Talk Live" podcast on the Old Millennials website). For the other Old Millennials host, well, she only really dove into the TMNT universe as an adult. In short, she holds no nostalgia for these rubber-suited, pizza-obsessed sewer dwellers. Here's the thing about the 1990 movie: It's much more like the original Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird comics, which leaned into the fighting and criminal underworld of New York City. Raphael is moody instead of sarcastic, and Shredder is a stone-cold badass who is smart enough to keep himself away from alien brain creatures and dimwitted mutant sidekicks. And much of the movie's story borrows heavily from various early issues of the comic series. Old Millennials Tyler and Angela take an extensive look at the 1990 original, which they also showed to their four kids for the first time. Tyler loves it, obviously, and Angela wants to start a fight, but, spoiler alert, she ultimately can't deny the grimy charm of the movie. At least we can agree that punk kid Danny deserves to go to jail, and that April's boss at the news station is a total creep. Also, give us more Sam Rockwell! Then the hosts dive into the far more divisive sequels, 1991's "The Secret of the Ooze," and 1993's "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3," often subtitled nowadays as "Turtles in Time." Neither host have much to defend about "Ooze," but it gives Tyler an opportunity to talk about that time Angela went to see Vanilla Ice in concert. And, look, we know #3 is mocked for its shoddy rubber suits, idiotic jokes and lack of memorable villains, but you'll hear a somewhat spirited defense of the movie here. Look, at least the Turtles get to fight with their weapons, rather than with sausages and break dance moves like in "Secret of the Ooze." So join the Old Millennials for this special episode on the original TMNT trilogy, with talk of Judith Hoag vs. Paige Turco as April, the unacceptable absences of Elias Koteas as Casey Jones and Corey Feldman as the voice of Donatello in part 2, and about a thousand different tangents from Tyler about Ninja Turtles comics, the stellar 2003 animated series, the equally strong Nickelodeon series that started in 2012, and those garbage, Michael Bay-produced movies in the 2010s. And, remember, if you lose a sai, don't worry; you can get it back! You can get it back! Damn! Looking for a more obvious stinger? Fine. "Wise man say, 'Never pay full price for late pizza.'" Also discussed on this episode of Old Millennials Remember Movies Peacemaker (2022 HBO Max series) I Want You Back (2022) Marry Me (2022) Kimi (2022) Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022) Hollywood Homicide (2003) Rush Hour 3 (2007)

We’re kicking off the TSHE Book Club with a discussion of Hollywood Homicide, by Kellye Garrett. We liked the diversity and the accuracy of the LA setting, but had a few burning questions that needed answers. Did we find our heroine endearingly daffy, or irritatingly incompetent? Was all the textspeak really necessary? Does a certain type of pornography referenced actually exist? (“Bobby, is that a thing?”) How many sweet potato cupcakes did we each give it, and which host felt differently than everybody else? Tune in to find out! In other news, Bobby’s waiting for his race car bed to arrive, Hillary questions the entire premise of 101 Dalmatians, Ann’s already chosen our next book, Meredith has yet another Big Life Update, and Christy makes an amazing contribution to waterbed talk.TSHE Recommends:Anything Goes performance at the 2011 Tony AwardsSlow Burn: The Road to the Iraq WarConnect with the show! This is your show, too. 150 episodes! Your hosts celebrate their 150th episode by re-doing the 2nd-ever episode (that had dodgy audio and was never available on the podcast feed) in Hollywood Homicide, the 2003 action-comedy starring Harrison Ford and Josh Hartnett, two actors who CLEARLY did not get along throughout the entire shoot. The guys also discuss the 18 million subplots that barely pay off, they wonder just how funny real estate is supposed to be, Nathan makes sure you'll never think of a chocolate donut the same way again and much more. Plus: find out why this episode is the Avengers Endgame of this podcast (no, this is not a finale). The guys also drop a hint for next week's movie. This Patreon Pick comes to us courtesy of Jerika herself! This week, Nathan and Brendan are befuddled by the late-90s movie Kickboxing Academy (which may also be called Teen Boxer) starring Chyler Leigh in her first major acting role. Jerika is also here to help the guys figure out who the main character is (a fruitless task) and then they discuss the DVD cover prominently featuring a character that is not in the film, underage drinking, machine guns, the severe amount of padding for a 78-minute (!) film, the writers not knowing the difference between karate and kickboxing and more. Plus: Brendan and Jerika blow Nathan's mind inside out with a very upsetting reveal. Next week: the 150th episode! The guys will tackle Hollywood Homicide, which was originally a "lost episode" due to the subpar audio quality. Questions? Comments? Suggestions? This is a first for It's a Mystery podcast! Award-winning mystery author Kellye Garrett reads to us from a work-in-progress, which is a first for this show. When the publisher of her first two mysteries shuttered their doors, Kellye pivoted and began working on this domestic thriller. You'll hear her read from that book and then we discuss her two Detective By Day books and how they are still impacting readers, the #ownvoices movement, and how writing for the TV show Cold Case helped Kellye when it came to writing fiction. This week's mystery author Kellye Garrett’s Hollywood Homicide, about a semi-famous, mega-broke black actress, won the Anthony, Agatha and Lefty for best first novel. It’s also one of BookBub’s “Top 100 Crime Novels of All Time.” The second, Hollywood Ending, was featured on the TODAY show’s Best Summer Reads of 2019 and was nominated for both Anthony and Lefty awards. She serves on Sisters in Crime’s national board and is a co-founder of Crime Writers of Color. Interview transcript with Kellye Garrett Alexandra: Kellye Garrett's mystery, Hollywood Homicide, about a semi-famous mega broke Black actress won the Anthony, Agatha and Lefty for best first novel. It's also one of BookBub's top 100 crime novels of all time. The second in the series, Hollywood ending was featured on Today Show's best summer reads of 2019 and was nominated for both the Anthony and lefty awards. Kelly serves on Sisters In Crime's national board, and is cofounder of Crime Writers of Color. Welcome to the show. Kellye. Kellye: Thank you so much for having me, Alexandra. Alexandra: Oh, it's my pleasure. So you're going to read to us today. This is kind of unusual and I'm so excited. You're going to read to us from a work in progress. Do you want to set it up for us? Kellye: Sure. It's a bit more serious than my other books, but it's a stand alone. It's like a Lori Raider day or a Megan Miranda type book. Still very much about a woman, first person narrative, looking into a mystery. Alexandra: As we mentioned in your bio, you've got two books in the Detective by Day series. Tell us why you've switched to do this book about different characters. Kellye: For two reasons. First, my publisher closed, Midnight Ink, before my third book came out. And they still have the rights for the first two. So, for right now I can't write any more of those books. And although I've always loved cozies, I started reading a lot more domestic suspense, domestic thriller type books, like I was saying, Megan Miranda, Lloyd Raider Day. I really fell in love with the genre. But one thing I realized that there aren't really any Black women in those books. And I think there's certain reasons why. And so I wanted to write a book like that, but how Black woman would have it happen to her. Alexandra: That brings me to my next question then. Tell us about the hashtag #ownvoices movement. I don't know anything about it. I did a little bit of research when I was preparing for our interview. Why don't you tell us about it? Kellye: Sure. A few years ago, maybe like five or six, there was a big push, especially in for stories of more diverse, main characters. And, what happened is a lot of straight CIS white people started writing books with more diverse, main characters, which is a great, nothing wrong with that. But what happens is that they would sell the book, their book and then went to an actual person who was of that group tried to sell it they were told we already have a book like that. So the idea of #ownvoices - people of their own culture, writing about their culture - grew out of that.
EMMY® Award-winning composer Alex Wurman is highly versatile with a broad musical palette. He is able to work with directors in many different genres. He has particularly enjoyed the breadth of work with notable writer/directors, such as Steven Conrad (Perpetual Grace LTD, The Promotion, Patriot), John August (The Nines), Jill Sprecher (Thirteen Conversations About One Thing), Adam McKay (Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby) and Ron Shelton (Play It To The Bone, Hollywood Homicide). Whether writing critically-acclaimed music for an Oscar®-winning film, supporting comedy with musical punctuation for box office giants, or capturing the essence of brainy ideas for indie films, Wurman traverses the film-score landscape with ease. This is exemplified by his eerie piano melodies of Confessions of A Dangerous Mind, groovy ’70’s themes for Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, contemporary interpretations of French impressionism for Thirteen Conversations About One Thing, and soulful melodies combined with ethereal orchestrations for March of the Penguins. We focus on two books this week the first is HOLLYWOOD HOMICIDE by Kellye Garrett. Kellye's first novel, Hollywood Homicide, won Agatha, Anthony, Lefty and IPPY awards for best first novel. It was also nominated for Macavity and Barry awards. Hollywood Ending, her second book in the Detective by Day mystery series, was chosen a best mystery of 2018 by Suspense Magazine, Book Riot and CrimeReads, which called it the most fun book of the year. In addition to writing, she currently serves on the national Board of Directors of Sisters in Crime as its Publicity Liaison. Then we highlight KINFOLK KILLERS by L.V. Nield. Prior to retiring with her husband to Vancouver Island, Canada, L.V. Nield practiced law for many years in New York State. Working primarily in Elder Law, Laura was always aware of the vulnerability of seniors. KINFOLK KILLERS - An Olive Reader Mystery, while a work of pure fiction, incorporates potential abuses of the old and frail.
On a very special extra-intoxicated episode, we take a look back at the death and failed resurrection of Harrison Ford's career as a leading man on the first, and hopefully only, Harrison Hate Watch. If you've ever wanted someone to explain the plots of Hollywood Homicide and Firewall to you amidst a smattering of giggles, drop everything and slam that PLAY button, you big weirdo.
Chapter 1 - True Crime: Carjacking, Gunshots, and Murder. Hollywood, 1987. LAPD Detective Rick Jackson is called to a crime scene outside a popular Hollywood nightclub. There's a gun, a fingerprint, and a bullet on the ground that will hold the key to unlocking a case that would last 32 years, the longest and most challenging homicide investigation of Jackson's career.

This week, Josh Hartnett teams up with Hollywood legend Harrison Ford for a buddy action comedy that it turns out…is mostly about real estate. Patrick, Matt, and Jake attempt to solve the movie’s many script problems while also reading some iTunes reviews, discussing more of the Town & Country cinematic universe, Superman’s nudity, and whether or not Patrick almost killed Harrison Ford in 2015.
I peeked over the stairs and saw my sister Jenna's reflection in the glass. I considered ignoring it and sneaking back into my office until my cell phone started vibrating in my pocket. My family and the Borg from Star Trek had a lot in common. Both demanded complete assimilation and resistance was definitely futile. -- V.M. Burns, The Plot is Murder I am so excited to interview debut author V.M. Burns. Her new cozy series begins with The Plot is Murder, as her protagonist, Samantha, starts a new chapter in her own life and opens a mystery bookstore. Valerie herself is starting a new chapter as a published author with this book, and she's taking the publishing world by storm. Four books in this series are slated for publication over the next two years. In addition to that, she's launching a second series about murders in the dog club arena through Kensington's e-book imprint. In the Dog House, the first in the series, comes out in August of 2018. And if you, like me, did not know what Conformation is, the American Kennel Club is happy to tell you. Not content with two series, Valerie has a third one coming from Camel Press in July of 2018. Travellin’ Shoes is the first in a series of cozy mysteries where all the titles are from Negro Spirituals. Each book includes unique and original soul food recipes that provide a taste of the African American culture depicted in each book. Oh, be still my heart -- and tummy! You don't have to wait to find recipes from Valerie: her website already features several recipes, and more are to come. The Plot is Murder also has an eccentric community and Valerie talks about developing the characters, especially Nana Jo, a vibrant woman of a certain age with a circle of equally-intrepid older women friends. Finally, Valerie gives a shout out (in both The Plot is Murder and in the interview) to her favorite writers: Rex Stout, Agatha Christie, and Dorothy Gilman. There's just so much to love here. We also both give a big squee of love to Kellye Garrett's debut, Hollywood Homicide. You can check out my interview with Kellye here. As I write this, Hollywood Homicide has just been named one of BOLO Books Top Reads of 2017. Woot! As always, if you'd rather read than listen, the transcript is below. Enjoy! -- Laura *********************************************************************************************** Transcript of interview with V.M. Burns Laura Brennan: My guest today is author V.M. Burns, whose debut cozy, The Plot is Murder, launches a wonderful new series about starting over, chasing dreams, and -- of course -- murder. Valerie, thank you for joining me. V.M. Burns: Thank you so much for having me. I'm excited to be here. LB: How did you get started writing? VMB: I think it just came naturally from my love of cozy mysteries. I think for anybody who reads cozy mysteries as much as I do, you probably start thinking, boy, it would be really great if there was a series about -- blah, blah, blah. Or, boy, I wish that series had ended differently and it had gone in this other direction. And then you just start going there. And eventually, you just sit down and say, well, you know what? Maybe I could write that. And then you do. LB: So, The Plot is Murder is the first in your Mystery Bookshop Series. VMB: Yes. LB: For someone who hasn't yet had the pleasure of picking it up, what would we need to know about it in order to follow our conversation? VMB: This first book,The Plot is Murder, introduces the reader to the protagonist, Samantha Washington. Samantha is in her mid-30s and she has been a hard-working individual her whole life, her and her husband, Leon. He was a cook and she was a high school English teacher. But they always had this dream of opening a mystery bookstore. One day, Leon dies. He's diagnosed with a terminal illness and he dies. And they realize that life is short, and it's too short not to follow your dreams.

Mystery author Kellye Garrett introduced her new book Hollywood Homicide last Saturday night at Books on the Square in Providence, R.I. While attendees sipped on wine from bin 312 and indulged in cupcakes from Sin Desserts, actress Mia Ellis read the first chapter of Hollywood Homicide. Daniel Ford and Sean Tuohy then asked Garrett about her origins as a storyteller and what inspired her character Dayna Anderson. (Special thanks to Vanessa Lillie for organizing the event!) To learn more about Kellye Garrett, visit her official website, like her Facebook page, or follow her on Twitter @kellyekel. Today's episode is sponsored by OneRoom.

The copy was straight to the point. Wanted: Information on the hit-and-run murder of Haley Joseph. Tuesday, August 18th, 11:30 p.m., Vermont Ave near Hillside St. And across the bottom, right over her press-on French manicure, $15,000 reward. I peered closer at the billboard, looking for a hint that this was a brilliant marketing scheme for some new movie. I was tempted to call the number, sure I'd hear some prerecorded message letting me know what time and day it would be airing on Lifetime. But I realized this was real. The address was right up the block. They wouldn't put the cross streets on there if it was for some silly movie. Haley Joseph had died. -- Kellye Garrett, Hollywood Homicide Such a delight to chat with Kellye Garrett, whose marvelous debut, Hollywood Homicide, launches the investigative career of Dayna Anderson, a semi-famous, mega-broke black actress. A cozy sensibility combines with a fresh voice and an insider's look at Hollywood to create a terrific new series. Kellye will, in the near future, be giving away an annotated copy of the novel -- and in the meantime, she's posting the annotations online. So if you needed another reason to visit her website, well, that's a fun one. ;) We talk about a lot of authors we like, including Alexia Gordon, whom I had the pleasure of interviewing. You can find our chat right here. Kellye gives a shout out to her fellow Chicks on the Case, where she blogs, including Ellen Byron (whose Destination Mystery interview you can listen to here), Cynthia Kuhn, Vickie Fee, Lisa Q. Mathews, and Marla Cooper. She also admires Sue Grafton and Janet Evanovich, and one she terms "an old-school favorite," the beloved Joan Hess. Me, I give a shout out to Steph Cha, who also has a series about a woman who grows into being a private eye, and set in Los Angeles, although her series has a far more Noir sensibility, as does Danny Gardner's debut novel. Kellye also mentions V.M. Burns, whose book is not yet out (though you can pre-order) and I am thrilled to say that I have an interview scheduled with her for her launch day in November, so stay tuned! So many books! So little time! As always, if you'd rather read than listen, the transcript is below. Enjoy! -- Laura Transcript of Interview with Kellye Garrett Laura Brennan: My guest today is Kellye Garrett, whose debut mystery, Hollywood Homicide, is the first in a cozy series featuring Dayna Anderson, a former actress hot on the trail of a hit-and-run driver. Library Journal’s August Debut of the Month, and full of warm friendships and quirky characters, Hollywood Homicide is a lighthearted mystery that delivers surprises, twists, and an insider’s view of Hollywood. Kellye, thank you for joining me. Kellye Garrett: Thank you for having me. LB: Hollywood Homicide is your first novel, but being a novelist is not your first writing career. KG: Right. I've been writing professionally my whole career. I started off as a magazine editor for a publication called Vibe Magazine. And then I wasn't really happy just writing about people doing cool stuff, I wanted to do cool stuff myself. So I went to film school at USC, and then I spent eight years in Hollywood working in television, I did some developing, and I also was staff for the TV show Cold Case for a year. After that, you know, Hollywood is not the most secure place, for job security -- LB: No, I tell people that if they want job security, Hollywood is not the place to be because your contract in television, your contract is actually in weeks. KG: Yes, it's one of those things where you could, your show could be canceled tomorrow and you could not work again for years. And so when I turned 30, I wanted more job security so I came back home to New Jersey and I started over into more corporate writing. And so now I'm a communications writer for a media company in New York. LB: I remember Cold Case. I loved Cold Case. KG: People,

Bet you thought we wouldn't stop here. We would just move on past Hollywood Homicide and pretend it didn't exist. WRONG, BUDDY! We take on all Harrison films...for better or worse. We break down Hollywood H and the "feud" between Harrison Ford and Josh Hartnett and all the things wrong with the film. There is also "K-19 The Widowmaker" to watch, which may have been a pleasant surprise. Not to mention Han Solo and Qui-Gon Jinn captain a ship together. We also catch up with what Harrison is doing now; news on Blade Runner 2 and a way Indiana Jones could come across Han Solo & Chewie (via Comics With Kenobi). Is Hollywood Homicide the worst film of Harrison Ford's career?
