In this episode, I continue the CCPT Purism series with a deep dive into the core tenets and core conditions of Child-Centered Play Therapy. I walk through Rogers' foundational ideas—including the tendency to actualize, self-concept, and the organismic valuing process—and explain how these principles shape our understanding of children and the healing power of the therapeutic relationship. I also break down the three core conditions Rogers identified as necessary for growth: unconditional positive regard, empathy, and congruence. These are not techniques to apply—they are ways of being that must be consistently present in our relationships with children. If we want to be CCPT therapists—not just practice CCPT—we have to embody these principles in everything we do. Finally, I challenge you to consider Rogers' tenets and conditions to reflect on where you are in your own CCPT journey and how to move closer to full alignment with the model. In this episode, I kick off a brand new series: CCPT Purism—a deep dive into what it truly means to be a pure Child-Centered Play Therapist. I've seen a growing trend where therapists think they are practicing CCPT, but in reality, they've drifted from full adherence to the model. This series is about going back to the foundations—understanding where CCPT came from, why it matters, and how to ensure we are practicing in full alignment with its core principles. We start by looking at Carl Rogers and his revolutionary shift from psychoanalytic and behavioral approaches to person-centered therapy. Rogers' belief in self-actualization, client autonomy, and the healing power of the therapeutic relationship paved the way for CCPT. I explore how these core ideas challenged traditional therapy and why our role is not to fix, direct, or control—but to provide a space where healing naturally unfolds. Episode References: Rogers, C. Mildred Kirschenbaum, a centenarian with a zest for life, is known for her viral life advice as a social media influencer, sharing her simple yet profound guidance for a fulfilling life. Mildred came from humble beginnings, born to immigrant parents in Brooklyn, NY. She excelled in school but needed to work. By 19 she was married and began a family when her husband returned from the service after WWII. She held volunteer leadership positions in non-profit organizations. With a passion for travel, she started a travel agency and traveled the world. Mildred wrote her first book, MILDRED'S MINDSET: WISDOM FROM A WOMAN CENTENARIAN, when she was 100 years old, to share her tips on longevity and living life to the fullest. Her positive attitude and love for socializing have endeared her to many, and her approach to life reflects her belief in enjoying every day. Mildred's daughter, Gayle Kirschenbaum, has been instrumental in sharing her mother's wisdom with the world. Mildred's remarkable journey and her unique perspective on life inspire and uplift readers of all ages. On this episode, Mildred shares her one way ticket to the South of France which she describes as her logical answer (her illogical answer is to a place where there's no cancer, no illness and where people can enjoy life). Apart from exploring her destination, with her signature humor and candid character, we also spotlight a few keys to living a long and zestful life, as featured in her book. They include: Attitude, learning new things, the need to foster a sense of community, and the importance of forgiveness. We also cover travel – her philosophy on it, dressing for it, and changes in it – and more! This is a delightful conversation which you'll surely enjoy and be inspired by.
In 1935, two Soviet satirists, Ilya Ilf and Evgeny Petrov, undertook a 10,000-mile American road trip from New York to Hollywood and back. They immortalised their journey in a popular travelogue entitled One-storied America (published as Little Golden America in the US), a suite of newspaper articles, and a series of photographs. In Soviet Adventures in the Land of the Capitalists: Ilf and Petrov's American Road Trip (Cambridge UP, 2024), Lisa A. Kirschenbaum reconstructs this epic journey, exploring Ilf and Petrov's encounters with a vast range of characters, from famous authors, artists, poets and filmmakers to unemployed hitchhikers and revolutionaries. Using the authors' notes, archival material in both Russia and the US, and even FBI files, she reveals the role played by ordinary individuals in shaping foreign relations as Ilf, Petrov and the immigrants, communists, and fellow travellers who served as their hosts, guides, and translators became creative actors in cultural exchange between the two countries. Lisa A. Kirschenbaum is Professor of History at West Chester University. In addition to her latest book Soviet Adventures in the Land of the Capitalists: Ilf and Petrov's American Road Trip (2024), she is the author of Small Comrades: Revolutionizing Childhood in Soviet Russia, 1917-1932 (Routledge Falmer, 2000); The Legacy of the Siege of Leningrad, 1941-1995: Myth, Memories, and Monuments (Cambridge University Press, 2006); and International Communism and the Spanish Civil War: Solidarity and Suspicion (Cambridge University Press 2015). Having made his way through school and started his career as an electrical engineer, skydiving hadn't been much more than a one time experience with a static line jump in college; yet as the real world started to exert itself on him, Mark "Trunk" Kirschenbaum decided to give jumping another go. This time around he could afford to pursue skydiving properly, and quickly found himself not just jumping but filming as well. Back then and especially for a talented electrical engineer, the shortcomings of freefall photography made themselves crystal clear. Luckily for the majority of camera flyers, Trunk had a real knack for exactly this type of problem solving, and the beginnings of his company Hypoxic began to take shape. Now providing camera solutions while still traveling the country and enjoying the boogie life (although a slightly more mellow version) Mark "Trunk" Kirschenbaum and Hypoxic continue to help capture our Lunatic Fringe on video.

Publishing houses make the study of literature possible in more ways than one. Not only do publishing houses make literary texts available as finished goods for our cultural consumption, the archival holdings of these publishing houses also contain evidence of literature in its myriad unfinished, intermittent, exploratory forms before and after publication. Publisher archives house extensive paratextual paraphernalia that shed crucial light on the works that we read, the authors that wrote them, and the industry that produces them: cover art, correspondence, contracts, and various other ephemera. But, what might such archival holdings look like in a digital age when editorial epistles take the form of e-mail threads, when cover art is likely to be conceptualized on InDesign rather than on paper, and when the artist who drew it is likely a freelancer who is not formally associated with the publishing house at all? Or are publisher archives the disappearing of an increasingly digitized, corporatized, and gigified publishing industry? In this episode Lina speaks with Matthew Kirschenbaum, Professor of English and Digital Studies at the University of Maryland to tackle these questions.
You know, maybe there is something to this idea of six degrees of separation. My guest today, Roberta Kirschenbaum and I and Joe Pilates walked the same streets in New York City and actually, climbed the same stairs in the now famed building, 939 8th Avenue. Without being aware of each other, Roberta and I both took dance classes on the second floor at Clark Center not knowing that on the same floor Joe Pilates once had his first and only Contrology gym.It was during a ballet class in 1984, when Roberta first heard about Carola Trier, one of Joe Pilates disciples. Roberta had injured her back and the studio manager suggested she go see Carola. At that time, Roberta couldn't afford Pilates classes and was able to heal herself, but the buzz around the Pilates method intrigued her and eventually she began studying with Carola. Roberta's story gets much more interesting! In 2005 she returned to 939 8th Avenue not as a dancer but as a Pilates studio owner, and incredibly for the last sixteen years has taught the Contrology system in Joe's original space. I'm very excited to have Roberta here to put a cap on Season Three and to hear how she's helping to keep Joe's method alive. In this episode, Dr. Kirschenbaum shows how quality and safety can be improved with digital solutions through a case study. Through a digital backbone, they have increased revenue, quality, and safety. At the same time, they have decreased costs. Administrative efficiency was also one of the things that were increased through these telehealth applications. Including technology in the medical field may help processes become easier and shorter. These apps help with scheduling and sharing information about a patient's condition pre, during, and post-surgery. Also, it helps doctors do a clearer tracking of their cases. Listen to this success story to inspire your own digital transformation journey.

Last week we had an interesting assignment in my movement of psychology class… we watched TV about kids at fat camp. Yes, you heard me correctly. And let me tell you, I had some opinions on the approaches of the staff. Is fat camp a bad thing? Not necessarily, BUT it seems to easily become a breeding ground for the messed up ways in which we've come to view fitness and weightloss. Unfortunately, it doesn't take a summer fat camp to receive these same destructive beliefs. Nerd Alert: There will be research & data in this episode. Citations: Kelly, K. P., & Kirschenbaum, D. S. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2020.04.28.065680v1?rss=1 Authors: Kastli, R., Vighagen, R., van der Bourg, A., Argunsah, A. O., Iqbal, A., Voigt, F. F., Kirschenbaum, D., Aguzzi, A., Helmchen, F., Karayannis, T. Abstract: Two inhibitory cell types involved in modulating barrel cortex activity and perception during active whisking in adult mice, are the VIP+ and SST+ interneurons. Here we identify a developmental transition point of structural and functional rearrangements onto these interneuron types around the start of active sensation at P14. Using in vivo two-photon Ca2+ imaging, we find that before P14, both interneuron types respond stronger to a multi-whisker stimulus, whereas after P14 their responses diverge, with VIP+ cells losing their multi-whisker preference and SST+ neurons enhancing theirs. Rabies virus tracings followed by tissue clearing, as well as photostimulation-coupled electrophysiology reveal that SST+ cells receive higher cross-barrel inputs compared to VIP+ at both time points. In addition, we also uncover that whereas prior to P14 both cell types receive direct input from the sensory thalamus, after P14 VIP+ cells show reduced inputs and SST+ cells largely shift to motor-related thalamic nuclei. The floppy disk was one of the greatest breakthroughs in computing. It helped spin up the software industry with a format that endured for decades. And in some cases, it’s conserved treasures once thought to be lost forever. Before floppy disks came along, computing was weighed down by punch cards and magnetic tapes. Steven Vaughan-Nichols describes the magnitude of the changes brought by the floppy disk. Dave Bennet explains how the need for permanent storage, which was also easily mailable, led to the first 8-inch drives. George Sollman recalls how he was tasked with creating a smaller floppy, and what unexpected sources inspired the next design. And when Sollman showed it to the Homebrew Computer Club, a couple of this season’s usual suspects asked him to see more. And the rest is history. Or is it? Matthew G. Kirschenbaum points out that floppy disks are still in use in some unexpected places. And Jason Scott and Tony Diaz tell us how they brought some source code from the sneakernet to the cloud. If you want to read up on some of our research on floppy disks, you can check out all our bonus material over at redhat.com/commandlineheroes. You’ll find extra content for every episode. The siege of Leningrad was one of the most tragic episodes of World War II. Blockaded for almost three years, the city suffered staggering losses; perhaps as many as one million civilians died, primarily of starvation. During the war, the Soviet state covered up the extent of the losses and propagated the story of Leningrad as a “hero city.” In the presentation, I seek to explain how and why this heroic story outlasted the state that promoted it. Drawing on a variety of commemorative projects and memoirs, I show the ways in which personal memories underpinned the “official” narrative of Leningrad as a “hero city” and how the official narrative in turn offered a resource for survivors attempting to cope with and make sense of painful memories. The case of Leningrad illustrates how difficult it can be to separate the political and personal impacts of war. Recognizing the personal importance, if not internalization, of shared, ostensibly official narratives helps to explain why in contemporary Russia it has been so difficult to decouple ideology, politics, and memory.

Sun Monkeys played a blend of rock, go-go, jazz, hip-hop, and punk that was, "funkier than James Brown's socks." This group spawned out of a jam session by kids that went to both South Lakes and Osbourn Park High Schools in Northern Virginia, and the lineup that recorded their landmark album, Brotherhood, featured Zack Larkin on vocals, Aaron Platt on bass, Thomas Brady on guitar, and Pete Van Allen on drums. They went through many different lineups during their years booking every show they could get, from DC Space to Dharma Coffee House, but especially as the nominal house band at Bender's/The Cave in Manassass. Other members include: Ari Kirschenbaum, Tom Young, Matt Goodspeed, Lara Platt, Stevie Treichel, Josh Scalero, Rashaad Jones, Mike Margolis, and Crick. Their second album, Love American Style, expanded their sound, with keyboards, samples, and a more laid-back style. They were known for their sexually explicit lyrics and posters, original artwork designed by percussionist Kirschenbaum, and lengthy sets filled with exuberant, sweaty dancing. Sun Monkeys were contemporaries of and played shows with bands such as AVAIL, Mary Jane, Vehicle Birth, and Dismemberment Plan.

However, Erin couldn't stay away from an athletic lifestyle and felt the need to keep her body moving. One thing led to another and eventually, Erin ended up in NYC as a Soul Cycle instructor. As you will learn in our conversation and on her soul cycle bio, her classes combine athletic intensity with lighthearted fun. She wants her riders to see themselves as fierce warriors when they attack their workout, but also be able to laugh at themselves along the way. A few shout outs this week - @Yuna.the.gymnast, @AnastasiaCardino and @Grace.with.a.freckle.face. We love hearing from you guys. Hope everyone has a great weekend and don't forget to point your toes! xo --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/lifeinaleo/support

Lecture 568 (11 June 2014)
Gayle asks, "Did you ever feel like you were born into the wrong family?" Perhaps you aren't quite like your siblings, or there are different rules for you than them. You wonder if you are adopted, as there is constant criticism about your entire being. Or your mother tells you, when you're a girl, that you were supposed to be a boy. Gary, not Gayle. Do you have childhood scars? This is the subject matter of "Look at us NOW Mother!", an amazing new film chronicling the early years right up to present day of Gayle Kirschenbaum's difficult relationship with her mother, and the process that she goes through to understand her mother's upbringing, and how it impacted her parenting style, and ultimately Gayle's well being. Her journey to filmmaking began with a short film called "My Nose" that was created when her mother continued to badger her to get a nose job, and she agreed to attend a consult, as long as she could document the appointment on film. She did the appointment, but the resulting short was discovered and caused quite a stir, and critics were unanimous: “Dazzling self-confidence.” - Washington Post “Hilarious romp” - Jewish Week “A big little movie” - Thrive Gayle says: "Audiences wanted to know how I handled my highly critical mother. After screenings audience members shared their stories. Unexpectedly, I found myself teaching people how I did it by using my “Seven Healing Tools” on how to transform abusive relationships. I soon realized, as a filmmaker who has a huge archive of footage and funny and smart mother who was agreeable, that it was my mission to tell my whole story. That’s why I made this deeply personal feature documentary, LOOK AT US NOW, MOTHER! " Gayle is candid about some of the things you'll see in the movie, as well as the ongoing relationship with her mother, and also discovering more about her abusive father and her father's 'henchman', her brothers. Not only did she survive this childhood trauma, she is now thriving to tell her story, after telling others' stories as a filmmaker, but endeavouring to help others now. Gayle adds: "As I launch this film into the world, my mission is to help others. And together with an incredible team, we will build a movement to do that and welcome your support and participation."
