As AI continues to seep into every facet of our lives, its potential to transform educational paradigms stands both as an opportunity and a profound challenge. As always, James brings his signature mix of curiosity and skepticism, pushing beyond surface-level concerns to uncover the deeper implications of our evolving relationship with AI. Mastery Learning: What are teachers Really Grading?

Transparency in Teaching (stuff)

The current grading system used in education has been in place for over a century, but it is becoming increasingly clear that it needs reform. In this episode, Jen and Anne discuss the current system's flaws, such as grade inflation, subjectivity, and the lack of standardization. They talk about how students are rewarded for completing assignments or even just showing up rather than demonstrating mastery of the material. They highlight the difficulty of determining what exactly to grade and how to fairly assess student performance. Finally, we argue for adopting mastery learning grading methods to better support student learning. One of the main issues with the current grading system is grade inflation. Students are often given high grades for simply completing assignments, regardless of the quality of their work. This leads to a false sense of achievement and can be detrimental to their learning in the long run. It's a system that rewards "seat time" over the actual demonstration of knowledge. Another problem with the current grading system is subjectivity. Teachers can have different standards for what constitutes an A or a B grade. This can lead to unfairness and inconsistent grading, which can be especially problematic for students competing for college admissions or scholarships. An evaluation system based on Mastery learning could be a better alternative to the current grading system. This system would focus on student mastery of the material rather than just completing assignments. Teachers would work with students to help them achieve true mastery of the material, and grades would be based on demonstrated proficiency rather than subjective factors. It is obvious that the current grading system needs reform. Grade inflation, subjectivity, and lack of standardization are all issues that must be addressed. A mastery learning system could be a better alternative to the current grading system, as it would focus on student mastery of the material rather than just completing assignments. By rethinking grading, we can better support student learning and help students achieve their full potential. Jon believes the two most important things that make good teaching good are active learning and relationships. Too much education is received passively, and Jon knows from both research and experience that students learn best when they are active participants. Students don't care what you know until they know that you care, and Jon tries every day to connect with his students. Jon has written and co-authored ten books that have been translated into thirteen languages. In 2002, Jon received the Presidential Award for Excellence for Math and Science Teaching; and in 2010, he was a Semi-Finalist for Colorado Teacher of the Year. Research and experiences allow us to consistently develop new best practices for teaching and learning. What worked last year may not work this year, for a multitude of reasons. And what we thought worked years ago clearly isn't what's best for our kids. So we get to shift what we're doing to ensure we're giving all our students what they need in order to flourish. (If only all educational decision-makers would get on board!)   Jon Bergmann, this week's podcast guest, is fully on board and leading the charge. You heard him all the way back in episode 3 talking about flipped learning. And this week he's back to talk about how to make the most of flipped learning. And that's mastery learning.   Jon is back in the trenches, teaching in a high school classroom, which I think lends even more credibility to what he's sharing. Because he's trying things out with real students in a real learning environment.   In this episode, Jon defines some important educational terms so we can all be on the same page. And he discusses why “mastery” doesn't need to mean the same thing for every student. He even shares exactly how teachers can plan out lessons to help students achieve the level of mastery they're on board with. It's such a refreshing idea that I know will help support students for years to come.   About Jon Bergmann: Jon Bergmann is one of the pioneers of the Flipped Classroom. He has helped schools, universities, organizations, and governments all over the world introduce active and flipped learning into their contexts. He is a frequent keynote speaker who challenges and inspires audiences with stories and real-life examples from his classroom.   He has taught at urban, suburban, rural, and private schools. He spent twenty-four years as a classroom teacher in Colorado before becoming a technology facilitator in the Chicago suburbs. When Flip Your Classroom became an international bestseller, he traveled the world for eight years, helping schools and universities move from passive to active learning. In 2019, he returned to the classroom to further develop Flipped and Mastery Learning. This has amplified Jon's voice with teachers and professors. They now see him as a fellow teacher working through the complexities and challenges of teaching today because his presentations include struggles and successes as he works every day with students.   Jon believes the two most important things that make good teaching good are active learning and relationships. But it can be hard to show educators what mastery learning looks like in practice. Cara Johnson has extensive experience both teaching and helping others using the approach. She talked with EdSurge about how she reaches parents and skeptical students—and shares her best tips for a successful mastery classroom.

Motamedi. (2019). Mastery Learning: An Effective Teaching Strategy Tarbiat Moallem University http://www.nyu.edu/classes/keefer/waoe/motamediv.htm Transcript: This study is an evaluation of mastery learning as a teaching strategy, written by Vahid Motamedi, Assistant Professor of Educational Technology at Tarbiat Moallem University in Tehran Iran. I list these details because it only seems appropriate, given the nature of mastery learning, to do so. The globally-connected world we live in today is one in which mastery learning has the highest potential. Instructional methods based on the mastery learning philosophy require each student to master a certain level of performance before progressing to the following unit of study. The achievement of these levels becomes the constant factor in the classroom, while time spent in each unit varies on an individual basis. Independent study is emphasized, and the educator primarily takes the roll of small-group study facilitator and one-on-one tutor. Mastery learning is designed to keep students from progressing through units of study without a comprehensive understanding of the preceding components of study. For example, one cannot be expected to thrive in an Algebra class without first developing a proper, deeply-ingrained understanding of arithmetic. The technological progress of the past several decades has allowed achievement based independent study, the most efficient model for mastery learning, to thrive. When every student has access to information and engaging content on the internet, though my preference is that the educator in such a classroom create this content himself, students are able to be much more productive in the classroom than previously thought possible. I recently observed in a Sp.Ed. Elementary classroom. While students were rotating through “learning centers” I noticed that, at one of the centers, four different children with varying reading levels were listening to four different audiobooks, each suited to his/her level. This would simply not be possible without the philosophy of mastery learning and the technology of the modern classroom coming together. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thumbthrough/support
