The question 'what is a life worth?' feels wrong; heretical even. Humans are infinitely valuable, we say. You can't put a price on a life. And yet we do, every day: for healthcare, for philanthropy, for insurance, for criminal compensation... Indeed, arguably, if we actually care for life, we must. So, how do we do it? What are we willing to pay for life? How do we calcualate it? Who decides, and on what basis? And what does all this tell us about our (in)humanity? In this week's episode, Nick Spencer speaks to Jenny Kleeman about her book The Price of Life. Journalist, broadcaster, documentary-maker, author and Mickey mind-blower is back on the podcast to chat about her incredible new book, The Price of Life: In Search of What We're Worth and Who Decides.  It's a fascinating and brutal investigation into who puts a price on our heads – because we all have not just one, but several, depending on the situation. Jenny's met with a hitman, people who've faked their own death, modern-day slaves, the makers of F-35 fighter jets, scientists, effective altruists, parents whose children have died in terrorist attacks, kidnap victims and, for a frankly wild final chapter, an American funeral parlour owner and body broker to find out what we're worth, dead or alive.  And now she's chatting to our Mick about all of the above, whether cold calculations are the way to measure a life, and how she still has a deep faith in the good of humanity.  Learn more about your ad choices. It's often said that you can't put a price on a life but in the name of business many organisations do it everyday. Drawing from the themes of her latest book, The Price of Life, journalist and broadcaster Jenny Kleeman shows us how the monetary value of human life is often coldly calculated in industries ranging from insurance to the welfare sector. She also digs into the disturbing and murky underworld of organised crime, where sourcing a hitman or a female trafficking victim could cost as little as a few thousand pounds. In conversation with author and researcher Carl Miller, Kleeman makes the case that we can't afford to dodge the question of how much we are willing to spend to prevent the loss of life while making hollow statements about life's supposed pricelessness. With COP28 coming to a close this week, we throw back to Episode 33 of The Thinking Leader where Bryce spoke with Michael Kleeman about what the human race has built is sub-optimal. This conversation feels more important than ever given the potential of the decisions being made about the fate of the planet in Dubai this week. Bryce and Michael discuss dealing with problems in complex systems. The main problem facing the human race is the fact we have built sub-optimal systems and processes that are unsustainable. These systems inherently produce waste products and lose value on a local level. Bryce recalls the time he met the founder of Toyota and how their company had a 100 year plan, positing that planning this far ahead is a necessity. Michael wants to see CEOs and leaders be incentivized to optimize their businesses for the long term. It is important for leaders to have a reason why they do what they do. All right, thoughtleaders – be honest. Have you ever nodded off a little during a presentation? Now imagine a conference filled with rock and roll, choreographed numbers, and comedy. That's a presentation you'd sit up and pay attention to! Our guest today is Kraig Kleeman, the founder and Executive Producer for Rock the C-Suite a production company that brings electrifying original and relevant musical performances to corporate events.  In addition, he is the author of The Must-React System: User's Guide to Prospecting C-Suite Executives which provides a strategy for winning meetings with senior executives. Kraig shares where the inspiration for Rock the C-Suite came from and how corporate messaging is better received through the performing arts. He describes the high energy performances he produces that can be the main stage of a conference delivering an audience-focused show that provides researched topics that mean the most to those putting on the event. Before Kraig was rocking the stage he had authored The Must-React System and he explains why when doing outreach leading with value proposition and product benefit language might seem intuitive it actually isn't the most effective method.  In fact, providing fact-based briefings combined with smart questions can allow the potential client to map your research to their own experiences and advance you to the next step! Kraig provides great advice for landing meetings with executives and creating high-octane events that any company can take advantage of. Three Key Takeaways: ·         Conference producers should prioritize the well-being of the audience over the distribution of information.  If the audience has zoned out, they will not take in the information. ·         When crafting content for a conference make sure to collaborate with the event owner to really dial in a deliverable that is effective for them and their audience. ·         Cold call outreach to executives will have greater success if you lead with fact based research and not value proposition

Every board needs a solid connection with their CEO. And every CEO needs a solid connection with their board. The Board-CEO relationship is dynamic and, done well, enables an organisation to be successful, sound, and solid. Done poorly, the organisation can reel from crisis to crisis; under-performing and drawing criticism from people inside and outside the organisation. It's a tough place for a Board and organisation to come back from. Thankfully there are practices and principles that are simple to introduce and maintain to keep the Board-CEO relationship firing on all cylinders, even in the face of crisis or uncertainty. As a follow-up to a recent webinar I hosted for BoardPro about why every board needs a solid connection with their CEO (https://www.boardpro.com/resource-centre/webinars/why-every-board-needs-a-solid-connection-with-their-ceo2), I'm answering a handful of questions that weren't answered during the webinar due to our limited time in the live presentation. And I thought what a great idea to bring back my ‘CEO whisperer' (and my husband) Jerry Kleeman to give us the view from the other side of the table – I bring the board perspective, he brings the CEO perspective – and answer these questions with a wider lens than the pure governance view shared in my recent webinar. Some of the questions we answer: • What essential skills are required for CEOs to succeed in future? • How do you handle a board that continues delving into operational issues during board meetings? • How significant is a strong Emotional Intelligence for a CEO? • How do you get a CEO or Board Member to "realise" it's time to go, and what if they still don't? • What does the CEO do if you have a Board that doesn't properly understand the business? I've invited a very special guest back to the podcast for this conversation; my husband Jerry Kleeman. Jerry is uniquely qualified to talk on this episode's topic; he works extensively with CEOs (both business owners and hired guns), many of whom have a board to which they report. Often, Jerry helps his CEO clients work with and manage their Board, and in particular, their board Chair. Jerry shares his insights from his 20 years of working with SME CEOs to dissect the ideal Chair-CEO relationship; know how to build the relationship using shared principles; create a regular Chair-CEO one-to-one agenda; identify where problems in the relationship manifest; and what to do if the Chair isn't the best person to work closely with the CEO. Questions I asked Jerry • Describe the ideal Chair-CEO relationship; what does it look and feel like for both parties? • What does a regular Chair-CEO one-to-one agenda cover? • Does the Chair act as a coach or mentor to the CEO? • Where do problems in the Chair-CEO relationship usually manifest? • Where can a Chair or CEO begin to establish a solid relationship? • What if the Chair isn't the best person on the board to work closely with the CEO; What would you recommend? Abstract: Growing evidence highlights a complex interaction between olfaction and metabolism with impaired olfactory function observed in obesity and increased olfactory sensitivity during hunger. The mechanisms linking metabolic state and olfaction remain unknown, but increased accessibility of hormones, such as ghrelin, and the diverse expression of hormone receptors such as those for ghrelin (GHSRs) in the olfactory system suggests an underappreciated neuroendocrine role. Here, we examined the hypothesis that GHSRs in the olfactory bulb (OB) link hunger with olfactory sensitivity to influence foraging behaviours and metabolism. Selective deletion of OBGHSRs in adult male mice was achieved with adeno-associated viral expression of cre-recombinase in the OB of floxed-Ghsr mice. OBGHSR deletion significantly affected olfactory discrimination and habituation to both food and pheromone odours, with greatest effect under fasted conditions. Anxiety-like and depression-like behaviour was significantly greater after OBGHSR deletion using 3 independent anxiety behavioural tasks and testing for anhedonia, whereas exploratory behaviour was reduced. No effect on spatial navigation and memory was observed. Although OBGHSR deletion did not affect cumulative food intake, it significantly impacted feeding behaviour as evidenced by altered bout number and duration. Moreover, food-finding after fasting or ip ghrelin was attenuated. Intriguingly, OBGHSR deletion caused an increase in body weight and fat mass, spared fat utilisation on a chow diet and impaired glucose metabolism indicating metabolic dysfunction. We conclude that OBGHSRs maintain olfactory sensitivity, particularly during hunger, and facilitate behavioural adaptations that optimise food-seeking in anxiogenic environments, priming metabolic pathways in preparation for food consumption. I absolutely loved interviewing today's guest. Jenny Kleeman is a journalist and broadcaster and the author of Sex Robots & Vegan Meat: Adventures at the frontier of Birth, Food, Sex, and Death, which has just come out in paperback. The book is utterly riveting - Jenny travels all over the place talking to those at the forefront of some of the world's most intriguing technological innovations, from lab-grown meat to euthanasia machines. Her experiences range from the weird and wonderful to the downright disturbing, and she doesn't shy away from looking at some of the more problematic elements of tech evangelism.  I've never met Jenny before - but I have spoken to her, several times, when doing the news review on the weekend breakfast radio programme she hosts on Times Radio. So I was absolutely thrilled to get to grill her about the incredible research that went into the book as well as her fascinating career as a documentary maker and foreign correspondent. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Buy the book: https://www.waterstones.com/book/sex-robots-and-vegan-meat/jenny-kleeman/9781509894925 Edited by Chelsey Moore

Imagine being in a new city, in a new country, where you don’t know anyone and having to build your professional and personal network from a completely zero base. This is what Jerry Kleeman agreed to do over 20 years ago when he moved from the US to Adelaide, Australia to take on a senior role in a global company. He is now considered by many people to be the person who knows everyone. And his ongoing networking activities continue to return value for him, his clients, and others in his network. Networking often instills dread in many of us; so I wanted to bring Jerry onto the show, sharing his somewhat extreme network building story to encourage you to embrace network building activities (not just meeting new people at events). Unlike Jerry, you already likely know many people – this is your existing network and is a great place to start becoming intentional with when it comes to progressing your board goals. From there, you can start to work outwards, building an intentional, valuable network who will go to bat for you when it comes to board opportunities. But which of these is the most pressing and, given the global nature of the challenges we face, what can any of us do as individuals to make a difference? Do we all need to become vegan? Is local food best? How should we spend and invest our money? In January 2021 leading carbon expert Mike Berners-Lee, author of the bestselling book There Is No Planet B, came to Intelligence Squared to answer these and other questions. This episode encapsulates a collection of important conversations that are defining our humanity, and yet are not being held by the developers of these technologies, much less questioned by the global population. In a society where profit comes before ethics, it is quite easy to blur the lines between what we need and what we want, what is wrong and what is right. As you finish listening to this conversation, you will start reflecting and being more critical about the technological developments that are taking place in the world in favor of humankind, or so they say. Technology will always advance, but are we really ready to pay the price? In today's episode, Dr. Rosie Sendher and Dr. Erica Fisk are joined by Jenny Kleeman, author of Sex Robots & Vegan Meat, to chat about the four pillars that rule the human experience; birth, food, sex, and death. Kleeman is a documentary film-maker, journalist, broadcaster, and author. She is also the host of the Immaculate Deception podcast, and the weekend Breakfast Show on Times Radio. Kleeman is not only passionate about her profession, but also about the topics she touches on her book, and encourages our listeners to reflect on their own behavior and dependency on technology. She believes humankind is still far away from becoming a slave of technology, but close enough to get uncomfortable and start these important conversations. Sex Robots & Vegan Meat Jenny Kleeman -------------- Disruptive technology has defined our generation and captured our collection imagination. I haven't owned a television or a landline phone since the 90s. Google Maps has made it possible to navigate any city as a tourist with more accuracy than a local resident, and healthy food is becoming cheaper and more widely acceptable every day. But there are downsides to disruption too - lots of downsides.  In the next decade, technology won't just disrupt industries, it will disrupt the moral fabric of society. How do we navigate the complexity of artificial wombs, lab-grown meat, sex robots, and euthanasia? Do you have a firm moral stance on any of these issues? I don't, and I'm not sure how to resolve these open loops. On this week's show, you'll meet journalist and author, Jenny Kleeman who shares her deep-dive research into morally disruptive technologies.  Listen & Learn:  The reality of sex robots and the real risks vs. rewards in the future  How lab-grown meat could replace our dependence on factory farms Where to draw moral lines in the sand when it comes to artificial wombs, designer babies, and medically-assisted death  ABOUT OUR GUEST Jenny Kleeman is a journalist and documentary filmmaker. Subscribe to Modern Selling on the App of Your Choice! What would happen to your company’s sales revenue if you were actively building a sales team where every member was progressively becoming a top performer? You know the answer - your company’s overall success would skyrocket. On this episode of The #ModernSelling Podcast, Kraig Kleeman joins me to discuss how he consistently helps sales organizations level up their entire team’s performance. Kraig is recognized as an expert on the sales process, sales transformation, and professional motivation. He’s consulted with more than 150 companies and his proprietary sales methodology, “The Must-React System,” has resulted in 250,000+ meetings with senior executives. Join us as we discuss how sales leaders can build a sales team that excels at selling. This episode is brought to you by Gong.io, the number one conversation intelligence platform for sales. Gong helps you achieve revenue success, which means you win more deals, skyrocket rep performance and gain critical market intelligence. Get powerful visibility into your customer conversations with Gong. Head to http://bit.ly/gongio to get started. Your Organization Needs To Implement A Sales Maturity Model Kraig’s experience dealing with organizations on every level - from startups to well-established companies - has shown him that all companies struggle to some degree with maturing their sales organization to achieve optimal results. His “Sales Maturity Model” is a simple but experience-based framework that enables any sales leader or sales front-line person to begin assessing their organization, themselves, their team, and performance. Then, they can apply that data to create appropriate benchmarks and make improvements systematically. Listen to our conversation to discover the ways Kraig implements training around this kind of assessment. You’ll experience the same advice he’s given to sales teams across the globe that has made him a recognized leader in the sales training world. 4 Key Areas That Will Enable You To Build A Sales Team Effectively  When Kraig first begins working with an organization, he digs into the following four key areas, in this order. 1. Data integrity Kraig wants to know if the data the organization is using is accurate, relevant, and truly helpful. If the data is bad, the strategy and process that uses the data will be worthless. If he finds problems in the dataset, the first order of business is to make a plan to clean it up and secure the right data moving forward. You can and should do the same thing in your organization. 2. Load Balancing When Kraig is looking at “load balancing” he’s assessing the number of SDRs compared to the number of Closers. Is the ratio as it should be? Sometimes making changes to the load balance can be the single most important thing to driving additional revenue. Kraig says that in order to know what you should do, you’ll have to test your situation to see what ratio is best for you. 3. Content and Messaging This is my favorite topic of the four and critical for successful sales teams to get right. Kraig always suggests that the entire cache of sales and sales enablement content an organization uses should be pre-created so SDRs do not have to think about any of the content at any level. When it comes to messaging, pre-scripted messaging that matches the phases of the buyer journey is what needs to be created and used team-wide. 4. Coaching and Culture In his travels as a sales consultant, Kraig’s observed that sales coaching is widely neglected - and that it is the sales leadership’s responsibility to ensure it’s happening. Kraig points out that when coaching is done person-to-person, consistently, and positively in the context of principles that are proven to persuade, it can boost performance that will amaze Senior Leadership. Having a healthy sales culture is also a vital piece of the puzzle and it goes far beyond the creation of a team mentality. Kraig suggests that sales leaders begin to profile the individuals within the organization according to their strengths and areas of need - for the purpose of connecting them with peers who they can help and with others who can help them. Effective Sales Teams Know The Power Of The 4 Pillars of Buyer Thought Kraig has observed that too often in sales conversations, sellers focus on the wrong things. Features, benefits, and the trustworthiness of your company are all important topics of discussion, but only when they are used within the framework of how the buyer thinks. Kraig lays out four pillars of the buyer’s thinking: 1 - Topics 2 - Trends 3 - Metrics 4 - Outcomes  When we train our sales teams to appeal to buyers according to the way they think in these four areas, amazing things happen. Why? Because the entire team is using hyper-personalized language without having to spend inordinate amounts of time dissecting the buyer’s LinkedIn profile. What Sales Leaders Should Do NOW To Begin Maturing Their Organization During this conversation, Kraig gives an overview of what he calls the 5 stages of a sales organization's maturity. It's his belief that as sales leaders systematically move the members of their sales team through these stages, they'll be building a sales team that will excel. 1 - Beginning 2 - Developing 3 - Emerging 4 - Accelerating 5 - Leading Kraig wraps up our conversation with a powerful tip for all sales leaders. He encourages you to educate yourself and your team on the power of the spoken and written word. When you understand just how powerful language can be, you can apply it in ways that tap into your buyers' thoughts and address the challenges of their particular roles within their company. The impact this subtle change can have is one that you have to see to believe This episode is brought to you by Gong.io, the number one conversation intelligence platform for sales. Despite the general perception that Daoism is simply an informal and carefree philosophical perspective, the Daoist tradition is a highly formalized spectrum of ritual practices and communal beliefs. Religious Daoism emerged within the rich second-century political and social milieu when challengers to official rulership offered alternative political structures to the imperial order. The establishment of the Celestial Master theocracy in Northwest China provided a structured system that emphasized the apocalyptic urgency of social reform. The new community was shaped by rigid codes of conduct and supported by religious professionals who mediated the bureaucratic relationship with a pantheon of gods. With unparalleled detail, Celestial Masters: History and Ritual in Early Daoist Communities (Harvard University Press, 2016), by Terry Kleeman, Professor of Chinese and Religious Studies at the University of Colorado at Boulder, outlines the historical development of the Daoist church during this formative period. He also provides a thorough account of the ritual and institutional life of Daoist communities during the first five centuries. In the second half of the book, Kleeman explains the various roles for community members including the Daoist citizen, the novice, and the parish priest. In our conversation we discussed Chinese official histories, the Daoist Canon, the Celestial Master founder Zhang Daoling, the relationship between Daoism and Buddhism, the Xianger commentary of Laozis Dao De Jing, ordination rituals, gender and women, petitions and talismans, Daoist daily and seasonal life, and rituals for the dead. Peter Kleeman (founder & curator of the Space Age Museum,) recently wrote a terrific article for Quartz entitled "If you want to change reality, read more science fiction." He did not pen that headline, which couldn't be more evident when you hear that his perspective goes far beyond just reading science fiction, an instead cuts to the core of the science fiction experience-- the fascination with space, imagination, long term vision and planning, society, spectacle, and of course, the enthralling sense of mysterious wonder for exploring the unknown. This is a tremendously inspiring, compassionate, universal talk about the human side of politics and society, eschewing party lines and labels to discuss the truth that WE. ARE. ALL. HUMAN. We go deep about how we are in this together and we need to start acting like it. It's episode after my heart, reveling in levels of my mind I love to explore. Please share this episode everywhere, to help get the attention of JPL, NASA, Elon Musk and the like, as they may be positioned and interested in supporting the Space Age Museum.
