Kate Hawkesby: I'm not sure Kiwis are really willing to potentially mask up for another Christmas

Early Edition with Kate Hawkesby

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 12, 2023 3:27

I thought I was in a bad dream at the weekend when I saw the headline ‘Health experts recommend people wear masks and celebrate Christmas outdoors amid another Covid-19 wave.'  So, my first thought is – what ‘experts' said this, and what wave? And how big is the wave? And when will we stop reporting waves?   Turns out it was Australia's New South Wales Health Ministry who were saying there'd been a ‘moderate' rise in Covid cases, and they'd asked people to consider wearing a mask inside crowded indoor spaces.   It didn't take much scrolling further down the story to find the name Michael Baker though. He was recommending for Kiwis, booster jabs, masks, and staying home if you were sick.   Now here's the thing about these guys, had we not been bashed everyday nonstop for two years by them in the media telling us what to do and how to do it, we may take it more seriously.   But the hysteria drummed up over a two-year period of lockdowns and social distancing has left us all with a bit of collective PTSD.   We don't want to hear from them anymore, we associate them with misery and bad times, it was overkill at the time, and now we are turned off whenever their heads pop up above the parapet again.   It's the same for many people with Jacinda, it's an instant reaction – I mean she got so toxic she had to step away from the Labour Party, she was that triggering for people.   So, I'm just not sure after all this time, and after all we've gone through, that we want to go into yet another Christmas with being told to mask up and keep our distance.   I mean the obvious one about if you're sick stay home, we probably could work that out for ourselves, couldn't we?   So how big is this new wave? Well, the key word was ‘moderate' rise. That was for Australia, what about here? Baker says we're in our 5th wave. I missed the last few, so I'm paying attention now for the 5th.   Apparently, our immunity is waning, hence his call for boosters. I'm not sure how many are adhering to these calls, that would be a more interesting story I reckon, what are the booster numbers? I'd hazard a guess very little.   As for the size of our wave, the last update on Covid numbers was 5 people in ICU, 212 in hospital with Covid. Remember the ‘with' is important, they may well be in hospital with other things, and they happen to have Covid as well.   I personally know of two people recently who went to hospital with other things and picked up Covid while in there. Getting Covid in hospital makes you a statistic of someone in hospital - with Covid. So bear that in mind.   I don't know who's in charge of marking the waves, I'm not sure how helpful it is to keep reminding us of them, or who wants to still hear about them, I mean will we still be reporting 6th, 7th, 8th, 25th waves? Or will we at some point accept that Covid is around now just like the flu and colds are around?   I'm just not sure about the merits of making people fearful about how they spend their Christmas Day and telling them they may need to spend it with a mask on.   I mean I'm prepared to be wrong, but how many people, who aren't immune deficient or vulnerable in any way, do you reckon are spending Christmas Day with a mask on? See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

People with high uric acid levels have an increased risk of dementia and Alzheimer's.  There's a relationship between these diseases and uric acid.  Uric acid directly leads to insulin resistance.  [19:30] Your Body Is Retaining Uric Acid As A Survival Mechanism   We tend to retain uric acid. Our uric acid levels can be higher as a survival mechanism, thanks to our primate ancestors. We don't hibernate for six months. Therefore, we don't need to be storing this fat for the winter that never comes.  88% of American adults are metabolically unhealthy. Getting Covid is associated with a 40 to 60% increased risk of type two diabetes. Individuals with higher uric acid levels have a higher risk of dying from Covid.  [25:10] Your Body Can't Handle More Than Five Grams of Fructose At A Time Your body can handle some fructose, about five grams at a time.  When your body is presented with high levels of fructose, it overwhelms what the body can do.  When fructose is delivered in the context of fiber, it slows the absorption. So, it's better to eat an apple than drink apple juice.  Vitamin C aids in uric acid excretion.  The most common way to overdo fructose consumption is by drinking fruit juice.  A 12-ounce glass of orange juice might have 30 grams of sugar. There's no way the body will be able to deal with that appropriately.  [35:30] Tart Cherries As A Remedy For Gout and Lowering Uric Acid Levels  Tart cherries have been researched for decades. Originally, tart cherries have been looked upon as a remedy for gout.  It has been noted that people who ate cherries would have fewer gout flare-ups.  Tart cherries are pretty darn effective in lowering uric acid levels.  [36:40] The Health Benefits of Drinking Coffee  Drinking coffee is associated with a dramatically lowered risk of Alzheimer's. Coffee is also associated with lower uric acid levels.  Plus, coffee reduces inflammation, upregulates antioxidant function, and improves detoxification in the body.  Also, coffee helps us grow new brain cells, no matter our age.  [41:45] The Relationship Between Animal-Based Protein and The Role of Uric Acid Fiber is so essential for human health. Most of Dr. Perlmutter's food is plant-based.  Regarding our uric acid story, certain meats or animal products are worse than others. Organ meats, sardines, anchovies, and scallops can raise your uric acid levels.  The most significant issues for uric acid are fructose, purines, and alcohol.  [48:20] Should I Follow A Ketogenic Lifestyle If I Have Gout Attacks?  The most significant player in gout is fructose.  When you research how to fix gout, there will be no talk about removing sugar or fructose from your diet.  The human requirement for sugar in our diets is zero grams per day.  We subsidize the growth of corn from which high fructose corn syrup comes from. We are supporting the diseases that are sucking up our healthcare resources. Diseases are significant money makers for the healthcare industry.  It's time we start thinking about prevention.  [52:25] What Role Does Mental-Emotional Stress Play With Uric Acid Levels? When we are experiencing stress, our ability to make rational, forward-thinking decisions is compromised. When your decision-making is compromised, you won't be making good lifestyle choices.  Therefore, under stress, you will eat more foods that have sugar.  Eventually, you will raise uric acid levels and feed the flame of poor metabolic health. It is time to make better decisions by lowering your stress levels.  AND MUCH MORE!   Resources from this episode:  Check out Dr. David Perlmutter's Website: https://www.drperlmutter.com/ Follow Dr. Perlmutter  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DavidPerlmutterMd Twitter: https://twitter.com/davidperlmutter YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/DavidPerlmutterMD Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/davidperlmutter/ Get Dr. Perlmutter's Books: https://www.drperlmutter.com/learn/books/ Grain Brain: https://www.amazon.com/Grain-Brain-Surprising-Sugar-Your-Killers/dp/0316485136/benazadi-20 Drop Acid: The Surprising New Science of Uric Acid―The Key to Losing Weight, Controlling Blood Sugar, and Achieving Extraordinary Health: Uric Acid testing device: https://amzn.to/3yjeP8Q https://www.amazon.com/Drop-Acid-Surprising-Controlling-Extraordinary/dp/0316315397/benazadi-20 Join the Keto Kamp Academy: https://ketokampacademy.com/7-day-trial-a Watch Keto Kamp on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCUh_MOM621MvpW_HLtfkLyQ Free 7 Day Keto Challenge May 9th 2022. Ellen started to get into adventure in her late 30s. By day she work as an engineering, by night, she dream of adventure.    In 2017 she wanted a new, big, scary challenge and decided on an arctic expedition - crossing Svalbard.    Ellen has never been anywhere that cold before and she didn't' know how to ski! She didn't know if the challenge that she had decided on would even be achievable.   The Svalbard Expedition was meant to go ahead in 2020, when Ellen was 42. It was postponed from 2020 to 2021 and again to 2022.    To keep herself motivated, during the delays and wanting to focus on building her endurance, she set herself a more local project – the Cheshire Challenge to walk all 25 long distance paths in Cheshire totalling 1,500km.   In January 2022, Ellen had her sabbatical booked, and found out the Svalbard crossing would be going ahead in April.    During this podcast Ellen shares more about the challenge, the lessons learned and provides top tips and advice to help you with your next adventure.    New episodes of the Tough Girl Podcast go live every Tuesday at 7am UK time - Hit the subscribe button so you don't miss out.    Support the mission to increase the amount of female role models in the media especially in relation to adventure and physical challenges. “The vaccines have done damage to the immune system such that it makes people more likely to get COVID—over a longer term, not the short-term vaccine benefit period, but after that—more likely to get COVID infections, more likely to get other respiratory infections.” I sit down with Dr. Harvey Risch, professor emeritus of epidemiology at the Yale School of Public Health. We discuss why vaccinated individuals appear to be getting COVID-19 infections at higher rates than the unvaccinated, and how much of our policies over the last two years were based on flawed science—from lockdowns to the vaccine rollout for children. We also reflect on the recent passing of Dr. Vladimir Zelenko, who pioneered the use of early COVID treatments. Doctors all over the country are now prescribing these sorts of treatments—mostly quietly, for fear of losing their medical licenses. “I'm sure by now, there's a quarter of a million Americans who have been treated successfully with these medications. They know that they were treated with these things. And they worked,” Dr. Risch says.
