Kicking off my Pride Month Feature for year three on the show, today's guest is quickly amassing one of the largest bodies of queer superhero character continuum in the Marvel Comics Universe. He's a two-time GLAAD Award winning author, a three-time National Magazine Award winner, and a winner of the 2024 Dayne Ogilvie Prize for LGBTQ2S+ Emerging Writers. That would be comics writer Anthony Oliveira. Anthony's run on Avengers Academy has been stellar and one of my favorites on Marvel Unlimited. It's soon to be partially collected for the first time in print this June as a trade paperback and also hitting shelves will be a return for him to Marvel's Pride Month project, Marvel United: A Pride Special, which will feature Captain America and Arnie Roth. We get into both of those projects, a little bit about his cinema loves with Dumpster Raccoon, why creating new characters is important, why it's hard to let them go, and I sneak in another Hell Comes To Frogtown pitch. Anthony Oliveira's website Byron's Shout Out: Wolf Alice Anthony's Shout Out: JJJJJerome Ellis Marvel United: A Pride Special From the publisher MARVEL HEROES UNITE AGAINST FEAR AND HATEMONGERING! I have sadly sworn off the MCU for some time now. None of the offerings in recent years have appealed to me but when Captain America: Brave New World showed up on Disney Plus I decided to give it a try. Featuring the debut of Harrison Ford's Red Hulk character, could this be the movie that brings me back into the Marvel Universe? Not so fast. Join me while I try to find a ray of hope inside this flawed super hero movie.

There goes my hero; watch him as he goes / There goes my hero, He's ordinary. Foo FightersHeros? Who needs them? Well, apparently everyone. The Marvel Universe movies alone have made $31 billion in movies alone - that doesn't include revenue from comic books, novels, and merchandise. And let's admit it: as long as there is a villain, a bully, or evil empire, we'll always need a hero. What is a hero? Someone who represents courage, selflessness, sets aside personal safety, and the drive to overcome obstacles to achieve a goal or protect others. They are soldiers and moms, first responders and dads, community change agents and children. They can be anyone. They simply arise when the time requires. It is probably YOU ... or soon will be. But we need archtypes. We need examples to show us how its done and what they did and why. In this series, Pastor Nate talks about important Biblical figures that - for no other reason being the right person at the right time - became heroes. I was very excited when Alexis said yes to being a guest on the podcast. I really enjoyed the work she shared on Instagram and looked forward to getting to know her better. Now, you get that same chance. We've got a great conversation that spans "the big 3" (as dubbed by me), Disney, Marvel, and Star Wars. We start off with Disney, throwing it all the way back to when the Disney channel was a pay TV channel. Alexis talks about some of her first experiences with Disney, like "The Wonderful World of Disney", the movies and TV shows (including a surprising favorite movie). Plus, Alexis talks about Disney Cruises, why they mean so much to her and her family, and the ship she's excited to sail on. From there, we head into the Marvel Universe. Spider-Man and the X-Men movies were her early start into the fandom. Then her introduction to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We talk about some of her favorite movies and characters, why she was forced to read Civil War, and what she's looking forward to in the MCU in the future (this was recorded prior to Thunderbolts releasing). Then we jump to lightspeed to a Galaxy Far, Far Away, and talk Star Wars. From her early experiences and where she got her start in the fandom. Movies, TV shows, and more are all talked about. Plus, we talk about Hayden Christensen and a picture she took with him at a convention. We wrap up with talking about the creative work that Alexis creates and shares on her social media side. We talk about how she first got started, what she shares and why, her goals for this year, and what you can expect to see. It's back to the future as we welcome back to the podcast our very first guest, Al Kennedy from House to Astonish. The original plan was to discuss one of Al's Mastermind subjects, the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe (and DC's Who's Who), but we only got there after a meandering bit of chat about a variety of subjects, including wrestlers from the 2010s and their current identities (no kayfabe breaking here). But we do a deep dive on the original 1980s version of the Handbook, how DC's approach to Who's Who differed, Marvel's readjustment with the Deluxe Handbook, the art in both books and more. Amazingly, we didn't mention the three-ring binder era of Who's Who or DC doing a spinoff Who's Who for Star Trek (which DC was publishing at the time). There's also some dicussion on some current books we are enjoying, including work by past guests Mark Waid (Justice League Unlimited) and Al Ewing (the gone too soon Metamorpho, with Steve Lieber). There's also reminiscing about late 90s comics, including John Ostrander and Pascual Ferry's Heroes for Hire and Starman. Sadly, no Swingers talk, although I had it in my notes. Shame on me. There's also some sci-fi media talk, but nothing on Doctor Who (I stopped watching after Capaldi left). Since Al and Paul O'Brien do a Thunderbolts podcast, we obliquely discuss the new movie, the Fabian Nicieza era of the book and rehabilitating of super villains, how the pod with deal with the “fight club” era of the book and more. Al also discusses some of his other projects, including his Terry Pratchett podcast Desert Island Discworld and some shout-out for our pals Joe and Todd at Longbox Heroes.

Ryan Clark has returned to race baiting. Yesterday, he defended Shedeur Sanders, saying that anybody that criticizes him is racist. Teams have questions about his attitude, the same way they did with Johnny Manziel. It has nothing to do with skin color. Anthony Mackie, best know for his roles as The Falcon and then Captain America in the Marvel Universe, said that success is given, not earned. It's baffling that athletes agree with him as he says this. Sports are the ultimate meritocracy. Hollywood isn't, they're all installed out there. Mackie also gave a short monologue on how he raises his boys to be men. He stated that over the past 20 years, the American male has been destroyed. Someone needs to tell him that this process has been going on for far longer than that. The clowns on the Pivot aren't ready to have this conversation. Steve Kim joins Fearless later in the show to discuss Mackie's comments, as well as a comment Ric Bucher made about Stephen A. Smith and LeBron James' feud. He thinks that Smith made it ‘personal'. Whitlock and Steve also discuss the Buffalo Bills, as they just acquired Joey Bosa in NFL free agency. The show wraps up with Shemeka Michelle, as she joins Whitlock to talk on Mackie's comments about American masculinity. Today's Sponsors: ExpressVPN When I go online, I prioritize my safety, which is why I trust ExpressVPN.
