From MPR News, Art Hounds are members of the Minnesota arts community who look beyond their own work to highlight what's exciting in local art. Their recommendations are lightly edited from the audio heard in the player above. Want to be an Art Hound? Submit here. Click hereGrief without words Theatermaker Kurt Engh saw The Moving Company's performance of “SPEECHLESS” in 2017, and he's thrilled the show is back again. The show opens Friday and runs through Nov. 10 at the Jungle Theater in Minneapolis. As the name implies, the play is entirely without words, but the emotions run deep. Kurt explains: Someone passes away in the play, and that person is ironically or symbolically named Hope. I think it's intentionally left to be ambiguous. The play is about five people going through grief in this very melodramatic but real way, and they find that the only way forward is to support themselves, but also support each other. The play shows how people are able to support each other when they don't even know what to say, when they're so upset and they're so at a loss, truly, that they move forward through physical kindness to each other. The collaborators of this production have been working together for many years. They are my favorite theater company in the Twin Cities, and this was voted as a best play of the year in 2017 by the Star Tribune. There are performances on Wednesdays that are pay-as-you-are starting at $15.— Kurt EnghA smorgasbord of short films — or hot dish, if you will Rachel Coyne of Lindstrom is looking forward to seeing the Franconia 5 Minute Film Fest, a short film festival featuring works from Minnesota and Wisconsin artists. The top 15 judge-selected films will be screened at Franconia Sculpture Park this Saturday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. and at the Trylon Cinema in Minneapolis Thursday, Oct 10. The Franconia screening is free with a suggested $10 donation. Seating on benches is limited, so Rachel recommends bringing a blanket or lawn chairs. Rachel adds: There's a claymation artist, some live film, some animation. In the years in the past, when I've gone, you know, it's kind of like eating like a really pungent spice. You're just like, wow, that's an idea, and it hits you over the head, and then before you know it, you're onto the next film.Given that the filmmakers are all from Minnesota and Wisconsin, Rachel adjusts her metaphor: It's more hot dish. So there's peas, there's carrots, there's tater tots and there's probably even some mushroom soup in there. — Rachel CoyneDid you hear that classic Irish epic about the cow? Anna Maher is a classically trained singer and actor living in the Twin Cities, and she's glad that one of her favorite theater companies, Clevername Theatre, is remounting a fan-favorite from the 2022 Minnesota Fringe Festival. “Connor's gonna tell: The Tain Bo Cuailnge” is a one-person recounting of the “Táin Bó Cúailnge,” an old Irish epic tale about a cattle raid. See it at Bryant Lake Bowl & Theater in Minneapolis, Fridays, Oct. 4 and Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 13 at 3 p.m. Anna says: It's kind of like the Irish Odyssey. It's an epic, and it chronicles a war that was waged between two factions, and then there's a hero. And the whole thing, the whole fight, revolves around a cow. And so, Connor will tell the story. He uses different voices. There are some different outfits that happen. There's a mask, there's a little bit of puppetry involved. And then he has a mandolin player who accompanies him for the entire show.” (Note: Anna Maher works for American Public Media Group, the parent company of MPR News.)— Anna Maher
One of the Minnesota State Fair's new Creative Activities competition categories was nearly 25 years in the making. Back in the year 2000, Doris Rubenstein was disqualified from the Minnesota State Fair's pickle competition for the second time. The liquid in her pickle jar was cloudy, because she made them by a different process than the pickles the judges were used to. They were traditional kosher pickles, fermented in brine instead of preserved in vinegar. Rubenstein took the experience to local media and even turned it into a one-woman play that was performed at the 2017 Minnesota Fringe Festival and more recently in Winnipeg, Canada. This year for the first time, fermented pickles had their own category at the Minnesota State Fair. Rubenstein was a judge. She joined MPR News host Cathy Wurzer live from the state fair to share her story — and some pickles.
It's that time of year again — Minnesota Fringe Festival is taking over local theaters. Here's a little history for you.Fringe fests like this one started in Edinburgh back in 1947, when several theater groups who hadn't been invited to the Edinburgh International Festival set up shop on the ‘fringe' and performed anyways. The idea of celebrating fringe groups has persisted and grown — although nowadays, the theaters are expecting them. Tim Kelley is the co-founder of Melancholics Anonymous, a local theater group putting on “Beanie Baby Divorce Play” at Open Eye Theatre for Minnesota Fringe Fest. He joined MPR News host Cathy Wurzer to share a behind-the-scenes look at the show.
When Cathy was 15, she fell in love with dance and mime while studying at the Children's Theater School with Myron Johnson and Wendy Lehr. She went on to dance with Zoe Sealy's Minnesota Jazz Dance Company where she met aspiring choreographer Ken Delap. As an original member of Ken Delap's Ozone Dance Company, Cathy performed across the Midwest and in New York City at the American Theater Laboratory.Other performance highlights include playing the lead in Kenneth Robbins' production, “Accidently Exalted” at St. Paul's Landmark Center, numerous productions at Chanhassen Dinner Theaters, Minnesota Opera, Kentucky Opera, and Minnesota Orchestra's Summer Pops Concerts, and live business theater events. Choreography credits include Chanhassen Dinner Theater, Minnesota Opera, Theatre Exchange, History Theater, Skylark Opera, Target Corporation, as well as colleges and high schools. As a mime, Cathy was an artist in residence through the Minnesota State Arts Board's Artists-in-Education Program, co-authored “The Mime Alphabet Book” with her sister, Nina, and performed as a Yoplait mime in New York and New Jersey.Since 1996, she's been working as a marketing writer for Twin Cities-based creative agencies and corporate clients. She still enjoys performing but now as a storyteller at The Moth, Minnesota Fringe Festival, Patrick's Cabaret, TEDx, Story Club, and Island of Discarded Women podcast.

Christine Maginnis, a native of Minneapolis, has been an active dance artist in her home town for almost four decades, a good chunk of that time spent as a performer and teacher with Zenon Dance Company under the artistic direction of Linda Z. Andrews. With Zenon she toured to Switzerland, Aruba, Saipan, Russia, New York and throughout the Midwest. She had the honor of performing in over 100 works by dance makers from around the world including Susana Tambutti, Bebe Miller, Doug Varone, Danny Buraczeski, Bill Young, Wil Swanson, Joe Chavala, Gyula Berger and Jeanine Durning, to name a few of her favs. Outside of Zenon she has worked with Cathy Young Dance, ARENA DANCES, Movement Architecture, Shapiro and Smith Dance, Off Leash Area, DAdance, CWDC, Borrowed Bones, Jagged Moves and Ballet of the Dolls. She also worked with indie choreographers Cathy Wright, Penelope Freeh, Zhauna Franks, Sally Rousse, Karla Grotting and Gerry Girouard. Other memorable shows include The Minnesota Opera's "Carmen", "Transatlantic" and "Macbeth" as well as Ruth Mackenzie's "Kalevala". Christine has been making her own dances for the past two decades and was commissioned by Minnesota Dance Theater ("The Fermentation of Suzie and the Sailor"), James Sewell Ballet's 'Ballet Works Project' ("Cabaret Niche"), Decadance Productions ("My Name is Vincent"), Lira Dance Theater of Sioux Falls ("E Finito?"), and L1 DanceLab in Budapest, Hungary ("Azalea Nights"). She has been invited to show work in many showcases around town including 'Renovate', 'Rhythmically Speaking' and '16 Feet' as well as created two evening length repertory concerts, "Unzipped" for the Red Eye Collaboration's 'Isolated Acts' and "Femme de la Swashbuckle Box" in collaboration with composer Matthew Smith for the Minnesota Fringe Festival. She collaborated with former Pilobolus/Momix dancer, Tim Latta, on the project, "An American Movement", that toured for a summer throughout Italy. Delving into the baggage of the human psyche using images from cinema, cartoons, mythology, musicals, vaudeville, fairytales, nature and spiritual ritual, Christine's goal is to create a "dream-logical" narrative leading the audience down a twisted path of emotional transformation often spiced with dark humor and melodrama as well as film for juxtaposition and dimension. She has been awarded a Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Assistance Grant (1987), City Pages Best Dancer shout out (1998), a McKnight Fellowship for Dancers (2001) and a Sage Award for Outstanding Performer (2016).

Ryan has sent Kallie a peach he has grown himself, and they finally have a chance to Video Chat, but things do not go as smoothly as either hope. Poet and essayist Michael Kleber-Diggs says since the killing of George Floyd, art — especially public art — has sustained him, reminding him our collective humanity and resilience. Kleber-Diggs says he was particularly moved by the new “Black Lives Matter” street painting at the corner of Penn and Plymouth avenues in Minneapolis. The Minnesota African American Heritage Museum and Gallery brought together a group of Black and mixed-race artists; each artist worked on a different letter in their own style. Kleber-Diggs says he loves both the individual letters, and how they connect to each other as a whole. He says the project demonstrates how, working together, individuals can create beautiful art and build community. Music professor Eric Heukeshoven got a sneak preview of Loud Mouth Brass’ new album “Louder” and he thinks it’s just crazy good fun. Featuring both covers and original work, Heukeshoven says the album is filled with high energy and unexpected twists. Loud Mouth Brass celebrates with an outdoor, distanced, and masked show at 7 p.m. Friday at Little Thistle Brewing in Rochester, Minn. Cabaret vocalist Nichole Carey plans to attend “FringeMiss,” a benefit for the Minnesota Fringe Festival. The live, in-person festival was canceled this year due to the pandemic; the Fringe is hosting a virtual festival, but on a much reduced scale. Carey says “FringeMiss” is one of several fundraisers by local theater artists who want to help the Fringe Festival come back strong next year. You can stream it Friday on Facebook or on the Adventurous Artists website.
My amazing special guest this week on Máiréad Mondays is the incredible multi award winning solo artist and author, Brian Kennedy! He is a guest star of Van Morrison, Secret Garden and Riverdance on Broadway! We chat about his amazing song writing collaboration, THINGS ARE GONNA CHANGE, with iconic artist Boy George & Culture Club! Art car artist Sandra Elftmann is taken with Madalina Kelner’s photo exhibition “Behind the Veil.” The photographs are portraits of people’s hands, submerged underwater and shrouded in brightly colored pieces of fabric. It’s an exploration of identity and what it feels like to be marginalized by society. Elftmann says the imagery is joyful, even as it draws the viewer in to understand and empathize. The exhibition is just wrapping up at Homewood Studios in Minneapolis, but you can peruse the images at your leisure on Kelner’s website. Actor and director Craig Johnson is looking forward to watching “The Art of the Entertainer,” a one-man show that pays tribute to vaudeville and slapstick comedy. The show was created and is performed by Commonweal Theatre company member Brandt Roberts, and is inspired by the work of Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton and Bill Irwin, among others. The show is available to stream on the Lanesboro theater company’s website through Aug. 1. Avid theater-goer Florence Brammer misses watching live performances since COVID-19 forced performance halls to close. And she’s worried about the future of the Minnesota Fringe Festival, which has moved to a virtual platform this summer. So she’s definitely going to “Reverend Matt’s Fringe Benefit,” an online cabaret/fundraiser for the Fringe. Brammer says she’s looking forward to seeing some of her favorite performers while also supporting an organization that does so much for the Twin Cities theater scene.

Today I’ll be talking with Leslie Vincent, one of the most exciting up-and-coming singer/actors in the Twin Cities. She has been seen on stage at the History Theatre, Park Square, and TRP, and is a regular on the independent theater circuit, including the Minnesota Fringe Festival. She has single-handedly put Monday nights at Minneapolis’ Troubadour Wine Bar on the map with her Cab Cabarets. In my humble opinion, she imbues every performance with a captivating blend of vulnerability and strength, and her powerhouse voice is truly unique and unforgettable. We spoke at my studio in north Minneapolis. PART ONE: The Interview PART TWO: A Song PART THREE: Leslie gets to ask the Music Director! “In India I think everyone is pretty much always dancing.” Divya Maiya and Madhu Bangalore talk about their marriage, their work with Bollywood Dance Scene and how the two intersect. Bollywood Dance Scene was formed in 2012 by Divya Maiya, Rashi Mangalick and Jinal Vakil, three dynamic Indian dancers who wanted to share their love of movement and Indian culture with their neighbors and friends. The trio took on dance choreography projects with growing scale, complexity, and team size. Their dancers have performed at the Minneapolis Convention Center, Festival of Nations and other venues that define the cultural scene in Minnesota. In 2014, the dance community they inspire was strong enough to create the first live Bollywood dance drama to be performed at the Minnesota Fringe Festival - the largest unjuried theater festival in the country. With 50+ cast members, Hi! Hello! Namaste? Was the highest ticket selling show of the 2014 festival. Armed with theatrical experience, Bollywood Dance Scene presented Spicy Masala Chai at the 2015 MN Fringe Festival, and it became the highest selling show in MN Fringe history!

Do you like theater? We sure do, and that’s why we’ve invited two participants in this year’s Minnesota Fringe Festival to join us. Natalie Rae Wass is dancing in Bollywood Dance Scene’s “Spicy Masala Chai” at the Rarig Proscenium while Matthew Kessen acts in Comedy Suitcase’s “The Averagers” at Theatre in the Round. Both shows still have tickets available for select dates but reserve yours now as they may very well sell out! We also talk about the Encyclopedia Show, a monthly collection of performances based around a single topic, to which both Matt and Natalie are frequent contributors. He also tells us briefly of his monster presentation archive Rev. Matt’s Monster Science. Both of our guests are also members of Green T Productions, who will be at this year’s MN State Fair (on certain days anyway). But this is our show, Xtreme Tasting League: Scotch, and so we also need some special guest star whiskeys. This month, that means Cragganmore Distiller’s Edition (2011) and Glenfiddich Age of Discovery. I’d also like to apologize for how quickly we wrap our show this month. We had to rush the ending somewhat as Natalie needed to get Matthew to a rehearsal. This […]

A few weeks ago, the Minnesota Fringe Festival descended upon the city of Minneapolis (not to mention about 3 blocks of St. Paul) and bathed theater goers in hour long blasts of laughter, drama, dancing and uncomfortable shifting of butts in seats as they watched a family member perform monologues that was let’s just say…out […] The post Hey!
