Hunger, Humility, Smartness: The Entrepreneur's Trinity

Send us a textVikram's journey from health crisis to blockchain pioneer offers a masterclass in resilient entrepreneurship. After being bedridden with spondylitis in 2004, he launched what would become India's largest blockchain consulting firm out of necessity, not grand ambition. Today, that decision has evolved into a 700-person operation transforming how we think about blockchain implementation across industries. The conversation reveals Vikram's entrepreneurial philosophy centered on three critical factors: hunger (which must come intrinsically), humility, and smartness. Coming from modest beginnings and losing his father at 12, Vikram chose not to attend college to avoid burdening his mother—instead combining self-taught skills in design, technology, and content to forge his unique path. What truly distinguishes NTR Solutions is their revolutionary approach to talent acquisition. Rather than competing for graduates from elite institutions, they identify individuals with positive attitudes and invest in developing their technical skills. "Skills can always be taught as long as you have the right attitude," explains Vikram, defining the ideal attitude as "the ability to embrace challenges without losing enthusiasm."The company's blockchain innovations span multiple sectors, from user-friendly digital wallets to their groundbreaking solution for preventing question paper leaks in government exams—a chronic problem across many Asian countries. This blockchain-powered system has already made history in India by enabling trustless exam paper creation without human intervention.Beyond building products, Vikram's vision extends to transforming his home base of Mohali into "the blockchain capital of India," creating educational pathways for local talent to thrive in this emerging technology. His perspective on leadership—"It's not like you are employing team members; first you are employed to them"—reveals why his approach has succeeded where others have faltered in the volatile blockchain space.Support the show

This is the Catchup on 3 Things by The Indian Express and I'm Ichha Sharma.Today is the 4th of April and here are the headlines. The Trump administration's new tariffs on global trade partners, including a 27% duty on imports from India, will affect sectors like diamonds, smartphones, solar PV modules, and apparel. While certain products like critical minerals, energy products, and pharmaceuticals may be exempt, most of India's top exports, including pharmaceuticals worth $8 billion, are not. Petroleum oils derived from bituminous minerals could benefit, but tariffs on steel, aluminum, and automobiles remain unchanged. These measures could reshape trade relations with India, despite limited relief for some sectors. After nearly 12 hours of debate in the Lok Sabha, the Waqf (Amendment) Bill moved to the Rajya Sabha for further discussion yesterday. BJP MPs accused the Opposition of spreading misinformation, while TMC MP Mohammad Nadimul Islam criticized the Bill as cultural vandalism, accusing the Centre of seeking excessive control over Waqf. The Lok Sabha passed the Bill with 288 votes in favor and 232 votes against. The amendment now awaits a decision in the Rajya Sabha after being tabled by Kiren Rijiju. The Indian Army accused Pakistan of violating the ceasefire along the Line of Control in Poonch's Krishna Ghati sector. According to Army PRO Lt Colonel Suneel Bartwal, Pakistani forces intruded across the LoC and triggered a mine blast on April 1, followed by unprovoked firing. Indian forces responded in a "controlled and calibrated manner," keeping the situation under close watch. Tensions have risen despite the ceasefire agreement, with the Army asserting that India's borders remain secure and that further developments are being monitored.Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma strongly condemned the statement by Bangladesh interim government advisor Muhammad Yunus, who claimed that Bangladesh is "the only guardian of the ocean" for Northeast India. Yunus had stated that Bangladesh holds a unique position to benefit from the economic possibilities of the region. Sarma called the remark offensive, highlighting its connection to India's vulnerable "Chicken Neck" corridor, which connects the Northeast with the rest of India, emphasizing India's territorial integrity and strategic concerns.Bajinder Singh, a self-proclaimed Christian pastor, was sentenced to life imprisonment in a rape case dating back to 2018 by a Mohali court. Singh had been convicted for luring a woman under the pretext of helping her settle abroad, only to rape her and threaten to post a video of the act online. The court convicted him under IPC sections related to rape, voluntary hurt, and criminal intimidation. Singh had been arrested at Delhi airport in 2018 and released on bail until his recent conviction. This was the Catch Up on 3 Things by The Indian Express

The BSE Sensex plunged by 1.69%, losing 1,313 points, while the Nifty fell by 1.41%, down 332 points. Investors are awaiting details on how these tariffs will impact various sectors globally, with market reactions likely hinging on the specifics of the tariff announcement tomorrow, said VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments.Assam CM Condemns Bangladesh Official's Statement on Northeast IndiaAssam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma strongly condemned the statement by Bangladesh interim government advisor Muhammad Yunus, who claimed that Bangladesh is "the only guardian of the ocean" for Northeast India. Yunus had stated that Bangladesh holds a unique position to benefit from the economic possibilities of the region. Sarma called the remark offensive, highlighting its connection to India's vulnerable "Chicken Neck" corridor, which connects the Northeast with the rest of India, emphasizing India's territorial integrity and strategic concerns.Ruckus in Lok Sabha Over Question Hour AdjournmentA heated scene unfolded in the Lok Sabha after the Question Hour concluded, with Samajwadi Party MPs protesting the decision and demanding that Akhilesh Yadav be allowed to speak. Despite Speaker Om Birla assuring that Yadav would get time during Zero Hour, the MPs continued with slogans and placards, leading to the adjournment of the House until 2 pm. In the Rajya Sabha, Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge called for an immediate decadal census and caste census, highlighting the delay's impact on welfare schemes. The Waqf (Amendment) Bill is scheduled for discussion tomorrow.Mohali Court Sentences Pastor to Life for 2018 Rape CaseBajinder Singh, a self-proclaimed Christian pastor, was sentenced to life imprisonment in a rape case dating back to 2018 by a Mohali court. Singh had been convicted for luring a woman under the pretext of helping her settle abroad, only to rape her and threaten to post a video of the act online. The court convicted him under IPC sections related to rape, voluntary hurt, and criminal intimidation. Singh had been arrested at Delhi airport in 2018 and released on bail until his recent conviction.Trump's Reciprocal Tariffs Could Lead to Uncertainty in Global TradeAs trade tensions escalate, all eyes are on the US President's announcement of reciprocal tariffs scheduled for April 2. Trump's plan to impose tariffs matching those charged by other countries has raised concerns about how the levies will be rolled out. With over 200 trading partners and thousands of tariff categories, the US could face an administrative nightmare. The initial focus is likely on the 20 countries the US has trade agreements with, with some speculating a blanket tariff could simplify the process but complicate global trade relations. That's all for the today. She tells us about the significance of the role, why she did not have any reservations about taking the job and the differences between coaching men and women. Plus we discuss the Men's Cricket World Cup so far and ask where it is all going wrong for England? We also look at how Australia will cope without Mitchell Marsh and Glenn Maxwell and ask if Afghanistan can realistically make it to the semi-finals.    There has been some controversy surrounding the lack of both DRS and third umpires in the Women's Big Bash League so we ask if cricketer's are too reliant on technology? In the world of Indian cricket, the fervor of fans was palpable as they chanted 'India Maange CUP,' echoing their longing for victory.  Rajdeep Sardesai and Nikhil Naz rewind the iconic moments of the 2011 world cup, the second time India brought the cup home, after 1983.  What were the intriguing parallels between the 1983 and 2011 cricket World Cups? Sachin Tendulkar, the stalwart of the 1990s team, found himself alone on a challenging path without the likes of Dravids or Laxmans to support him.  In the backdrop of 2011, Rajdeep and Nikhil shed light on the turbulent economic climate, marred by alleged scams during Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's tenure. This era was tinged with a 'feel bad factor,' reminiscent of the circumstances in 1983 when Punjab was gripped by insurgency and Kashmir faced turmoil. Virender Sehwag's revelation about Dhoni's superstition of consuming only khichdi piqued curiosity.  Also, they recount the subplot of the India-Pakistan match in the World Cup, that was set against the backdrop of the 26/11 attacks. The Indian government's skepticism about Pakistani fans visiting Mohali, a bordering area with Lahore, added an element of uncertainty to the typical subcontinental hospitality. Finally they relive the dramatic finale, where the toss was tossed twice, Sri Lanka faced the finals without key players, and the stadium resounded with 'Vande Mataram' chants, sending shivers down spines.  And why the question still lingers: Was Gautam Gambhir and not Dhoni truly deserving of the 'Man of the Match' title? Over his years in the civil services, he served at positions in the government of Karnataka and the Union Government, as well as a stint at the World Bank, giving him a unique vantage point to observe the changes taking place in Indian economic and development policy following the 1991 liberalization. In the first part of our conversation, I spoke to Krishnan about choosing a career in the civil services, how policy feedback operated within the IAS especially as the economy opened up and the question of being research-minded vs operational within the Indian bureaucracy. In the second part of the conversation, which you will receive later this month, we spoke about how external research was integrated into government systems, Krishnan's work at CPR looking at how well we understand Indian regulators and what advice he has for young scholars.

How did India fare in QS World University ranking this year?

The twelfth edition of the QS World University Rankings by subject is out and springs a surprise on some of the IITs. Chennai-based Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences and Dhanbad's Indian School of Mines University made it to India's top 16 in the UK-based Quacquarelli Symonds's latest World University Rankings by Subject. Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences has been placed 18th globally for dentistry and IIT-ISM, Dhanbad is India's second-highest ranked at 26th place for mineral and mining engineering subject.   35 programmes offered by 16 Indian higher education institutions have managed to break into the top 100 in the world, in the latest QS World University Rankings by Subject 2022.  This is a considerable improvement from last year, when 25 courses by 12 institutions made it to the top 100. Rising over a hundred places, The National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research, Mohali, made the highest jump in rankings by being placed 44th in pharmacy and pharmacology subject. Programmes from six of the eight Public Institutes of Eminence have figured in the top 100. IIT Madras ranked 30th for petroleum engineering, becoming India's highest-ranking Public Institute of Eminence. Others include IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IIT Kharagpur, Delhi University and the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru.  The University of Delhi was ranked 41st in the development studies subject.  The OP Jindal Global University has been placed at the 70th position for law and legal studies. It is the only Private Institute of Eminence and the only private institute, apart from Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences, to make it to the top 100.  Public Institutes of Eminence remained better-represented in the rankings than private ones.  QS said, after four and a half years since the inception of the country's ‘Institutes of Eminence' scheme, the recognised universities gained moderate ground on the global stage. A significant amount of autonomy in academic, administrative and financial matters has been provided under the regulatory framework to these institutions. Financial assistance of up to Rs 1,000 crore over a period of five years is granted by the government to each of the Public Institutions of Eminence. In the business and management studies, Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) Bangalore and Ahmedabad bagged top-100 ranks. So, what's the roadmap for Indian universities to improve their position in QS rankings?   While Indian institutes have made great strides towards achieving world-class quality, more efforts are required in the areas of faculty-to-student ratio, international faculty and international students to climb the QS rankings of best universities and best programmes.   Watch video

M.Morris (24) was the first to go but Kapoor went on to a great fifty well supported by Mike Powell who finished on (43*) as Abergavenny scored 158-5. The strong Newport side made a very useful bid for victory, but excellent bowling and good catching and fielding made it difficult for them to sustain the run rate and they finished on 140-6 Kapoor taking 3 wickets and a catch to go with his fifty to easily win the Man of theMatch award.Paul and Ryland give colour to these basic statistics mentioning Aashish's stylish batting and accomplished spin bowling as well as his all round professionalism and approach to playing the game.  Although Aashish was clearly a crucial element of their success that season Paul and Ryland talk about the rest of the team that contributed to the succesful year as well as mentioning two young Abergavenny cricketers who were to go on and have first class careers with Glamorgan, Mike Powell and Ryland's son and the current director of cricket at Glamorgan CCC, Mark Wallace. As well as Aashish's record breaking efforts with the bat, the county game supplied another world record performance.  Andrew Symonds, playing for Gloucestershire, hit a mammoth 16 sixes in his innings of 254 in the first innings against Glamorgan.  He followed that up with 4 more sixes in his second innings making a grand total of 20 in the match, another record.  David Hemp scored a career best 157 and Mathew Maynard 164 in a match that saw over 1500 runs being scored.Paul and Ryland reflect on their time with the club and the enjoyment it has given them.  they also talk about the importance a club's history is to its present and its future.

Either way, you'll say, "Thanks for the memories."My friend Gene was mulling whether stuff he knows should be passed on, if his stories would be of help. Nah. The best way for others to learn is to experience the ups and downs of Life themselves. So, no shared stories. Here’s my pushback: You are not now nor will you ever be the first person who wonders if their experiences, trials, tribulations, mistakes, misgivings, victories, and so on are of use to someone else.Yes, they are.Why do I work on shipping daily 60 Seconds episodes? In the hope that someone needs and wants them, will be helped by them, maybe have a better life.People are people; they will still touch fire to see if it’s hot. Our stories might just keep them from being burned alive.Story Prompt: When have you helped someone with your Life experience? Write that story!Practical Tip: The magic of stories is also in the sharing. Two Chickpeas In A Podcast

The Twochickpeas sit down with Guntaj, one of the running members of the @QueerPunjab page on Instagram. Guntaj explains his childhood of growing up in Mohali, Punjab. To the Chickpeas, this was interesting because of the lack of acceptance in India as a whole and knew it could not have been as easy as being open and proud from the beginning. He describes how he remembered something was 'wrong' with him and felt suffocated in feeling 'not normal' as a young person. Now, he lives in Vancouver and is comfortable with his sexuality but still understands the struggle of others silently battling their feelings because of the stigma in India and as a Punjabi. Queer Punjab is a page where people can go to express their feelings, to talk about their stories and feel heard. Guntaj tells his story of growing to become comfortable in his skin. In the backdrop of the farmer's agitation at the borders of the capital, the Congress party made a clean sweep in Punjab's seven of the eight municipal corporation elections on 17 February which are Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala, Abohar, Pathankot, Batala, Bathinda, and now Mohali as well, which went into a re-poll and the Congress emerged victorious there on 18 February when the results were declared. In the final count, the Congress won 1,399 of the 2,165 wards in municipal councils and 271 of the 350 municipal corporation seats. The most stunning victory came from Bathinda, where the Congress party is set to elect a mayor for the first time in 53 years, a city which has been the bastion of the Shiromani Akali Dal. On the other side, the BJP had a disappointing day since it is considered as an urban party in Punjab but came in with only 38 seats in the municipal wards and 20 of the municipal corporation seats. BJP's defeat in the elections does send a clear message to the Centre from the people of Punjab in the context of farms laws and the handling of ongoing farmers protest. The rest of the seats were won by the SAD which trailed at 289 and 33, and the Aam Aadmi Party at 57 and 9, respectively. How important is this victory is for the Congress, how big was the defeat for the BJP, and does this shed any light on the 2022 Assembly polls? Bangalore 2010: Cricket in the time of the Commonwealth Games

Press Box 2020

India and Australia snuck in a thriller of a two-Test series in the shadow of the Commonwealth Games in India in 2010. For the first time in ages, cricket took a back seat in the newspapers and on television, in India and it was a pity, because the action on the field was taut, tense and memorable. Ricky Ponting got shaded in Mohali by a VVS Laxman special, in one of the last games where batsmen were allowed a runner. The rule might have changed since, but you had to be a beaten Australian captain to remember that game for a runner rather than Laxman's heroics. The second Test, in Bangalore, a ground where India did not always arrive expecting to win, was easier on the nail-chewing, but had many highlights. With Laxman out injured there was a debut for Cheteshwar Pujara who began shakily but more than made up for it in the second innings, announcing that he belonged at the highest level. Remember Sreesanth, the gun bowler overseas who did not always have the best time in India? And Pragyan Ojha, the man who was Man of the Match in Sachin Tendulkar's final Test? You may remember that Australia had Marcus North, Nathan Hauritz, and the likes but it takes Bharat Sundaresan to remember Adelaide's own Peter George from that game. George played that one Test and it was all over for him. Even as India won, Anand Vasu suggests that this was the first time an Australian attack came to India without that fear factor. All good bowlers in that line-up, but not one than opposition batsmen would fear. The Tendulkar-Ponting run-fest rivalry, M Vijay finding his feet, the joys and challenges of open air press boxes and much more from Bangalore. Bharat the outsider eats a lot at Koshy's and hangs out on Church Street while fails to understand what cool means in a city that oddly felt like home long before it actually was. But, most importantly, Bangalore gave Bharat one of the greatest moments of his life. What was that? Well, you're just going to have to listen to find out. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/pressbox2020/message
