Welcome to Top of the Morning by Mint.. I'm Nelson John and here are today's top stories. 1. Tata vs Tower: The Chip Fab Face-Off India's semiconductor revival just got serious. Tata Semiconductor and Israel's Tower Semiconductor have been shortlisted to modernize the government-run Semi-Conductor Laboratory (SCL) in Mohali, under a ₹4,000 crore project. While it won't chase bleeding-edge tech, the revamp will upgrade SCL's 180nm line—crucial for defence, space, and medical tech. Production is set to triple from 500 to 1,500 wafers per month, and this upgrade could lay the groundwork for more advanced nodes like 65nm and 28nm. Tower, notably, is already a tech partner at SCL, giving it an inside track. According to IESA President Ashok Chandak, this isn't just about chips—it's about strategic autonomy, deep-tech R&D, and skilling India's semiconductor workforce for the future. With India's chip demand projected to touch $103 billion by 2030, this throwback node may be the start of a futuristic leap. 2. Reliance Defence's Big MRO Bet Anil Ambani's Reliance Defence is gunning for India's ₹20,000 crore defence MRO (maintenance, repair, overhaul) market—and it's bringing in American reinforcements. In a joint venture with US-based Coastal Mechanics Inc., the company will set up a facility in Mihan, Maharashtra to upgrade over 200 military assets, including Jaguars, MiG-29s, Apaches, and L-70 guns. The plan is to shift from buying new to extending the lifecycle of existing gear—more efficient, more economical. Analysts say this tie-up opens doors to US defence contracts and puts Reliance on the path to becoming one of India's top three defence exporters. With exports already hitting ₹24,000 crore and the geopolitical heat rising post Operation Sindoor, MRO might just become India's next defence growth engine. 3. RBI Flags Debt Storm Ahead The Reserve Bank of India is waving a red flag. In its June Financial Stability Report, it warns of three key risks: soaring public debt, overvalued assets, and rising geopolitical tensions. India's public debt is set to exceed ₹196 lakh crore by March 2026. Meanwhile, NBFCs are being scrutinized for risky lending behavior. While India's economy remains resilient—with growth and cooling inflation offering a cushion—external shocks and diverging global monetary policies could spill into emerging markets. The RBI says it's stepping up reforms to tackle digital lending risks, curb fraud, and protect retail investors—aiming to future-proof the financial system before the next big tremor hits. 4. Trump-Modi Pact Nears the Finish Line India and the US are on the brink of sealing a major trade deal. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that final touches are underway, calling India a “strategic ally” and highlighting President Trump's “very good relationship” with Prime Minister Modi. The announcement comes as EAM Jaishankar visits Washington for the QUAD meet, and just weeks before the US enforces new tariffs on Indian goods. Negotiators are aiming for an “early harvest” pact to defuse tensions and pave the way for a full-scale Free Trade Agreement by year-end. With Trump accepting Modi's invite to the next QUAD Summit in Delhi, the Indo-US alliance may soon move from handshake to hard numbers—$500 billion in trade, to be exact. 5. Agni Goes Underground: India's Bunker Buster Era India's missile arsenal is getting a powerful upgrade—literally underground. DRDO is developing new Agni-5 variants designed to penetrate fortified bunkers, much like the US did in its June 22 strikes on Iranian nuclear sites. Unlike the American model, which relies on massive bombers, India's missile-based approach offers flexibility and speed. Two versions are in development: an airburst warhead for surface targets and a bunker-buster variant with an 8-tonne payload capable of piercing up to 100 meters underground. This is the Catchup on 3 Things by The Indian Express and I'm Flora Swain.Today is the 4th of June and here are the headlines.1. Multi-party Delegation Briefs EAM on Anti-Terror Diplomacy TourA multi-party delegation led by BJP leader Baijayant Panda met External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar after returning from visits to Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Algeria to rally support against Pakistan-backed terrorism. The team included MPs and leaders across party lines, including Asaduddin Owaisi and Ghulam Nabi Azad. The delegation briefed Jaishankar on their findings, highlighting India's global rise under PM Modi. They said India's economic and diplomatic strength is helping forge international partnerships on trade and counterterrorism. Jaishankar lauded their outreach efforts.2. Monsoon Session of Parliament Set to Begin July 21Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju announced that the Monsoon session of Parliament will begin on July 21 and run until August 12. The session was recommended by the Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs, chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. Both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha will convene at 11 a.m. after a three-month recess. The session's announcement comes amid calls by opposition parties for an urgent special session to discuss Operation Sindoor—India's major military strike on terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir earlier this year.3. Punjab YouTuber Held for Links to Pakistan Spy NetworkPunjab Police arrested Jasbir Singh, a YouTuber from Rupnagar, for alleged involvement in a Pakistani spy network. Singh, who runs the channel ‘Jaan Mahal', was nabbed by the State Special Operations Cell in Mohali. Authorities say he is linked to Shakir alias Jutt Randhawa, a Pakistani intelligence operative, and maintained close ties with Haryana YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra—previously arrested on similar charges—and a Pakistani High Commission official. The espionage network is believed to be terror-backed. Investigations are ongoing into the extent of Singh's involvement and communication with Pakistan-based handlers.4. RCB Victory Parade Cancelled, Celebration at Stadium InsteadRoyal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) cancelled its IPL victory parade on Wednesday, originally planned from Vidhan Soudha to M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. Bengaluru Traffic Police confirmed the cancellation, stating the team would instead meet Chief Minister Siddaramaiah at the Vidhan Soudha. A celebration is now scheduled at the stadium. RCB had earlier announced the parade on social media, thanking fans for their unwavering support over 18 seasons. The franchise won its first IPL title this year, prompting city-wide excitement. Fans can now attend the celebration directly at the stadium later today.5. Trump Doubles Tariffs on Global Steel, Aluminium ImportsU.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order Tuesday doubling tariffs on nearly all steel and aluminium imports to 50 percent, citing national security concerns. The hike—effective Wednesday—follows his 2018 move imposing 25 percent tariffs under the Trade Expansion Act's Section 232. The UK, which recently signed a trade deal with the U.S., is exempt and will maintain the current 25 percent rate. Trump's decision marks a significant escalation in his administration's trade policy, as Washington continues to pressure nations for fairer deals and increased domestic metal production. That's all for today. Send us a textVikram's journey from health crisis to blockchain pioneer offers a masterclass in resilient entrepreneurship. After being bedridden with spondylitis in 2004, he launched what would become India's largest blockchain consulting firm out of necessity, not grand ambition. Today, that decision has evolved into a 700-person operation transforming how we think about blockchain implementation across industries. The conversation reveals Vikram's entrepreneurial philosophy centered on three critical factors: hunger (which must come intrinsically), humility, and smartness. Coming from modest beginnings and losing his father at 12, Vikram chose not to attend college to avoid burdening his mother—instead combining self-taught skills in design, technology, and content to forge his unique path. What truly distinguishes NTR Solutions is their revolutionary approach to talent acquisition. Rather than competing for graduates from elite institutions, they identify individuals with positive attitudes and invest in developing their technical skills. "Skills can always be taught as long as you have the right attitude," explains Vikram, defining the ideal attitude as "the ability to embrace challenges without losing enthusiasm."The company's blockchain innovations span multiple sectors, from user-friendly digital wallets to their groundbreaking solution for preventing question paper leaks in government exams—a chronic problem across many Asian countries. This blockchain-powered system has already made history in India by enabling trustless exam paper creation without human intervention.Beyond building products, Vikram's vision extends to transforming his home base of Mohali into "the blockchain capital of India," creating educational pathways for local talent to thrive in this emerging technology. His perspective on leadership—"It's not like you are employing team members; first you are employed to them"—reveals why his approach has succeeded where others have faltered in the volatile blockchain space.Support the show
This is the Catchup on 3 Things by The Indian Express and I'm Ichha Sharma.Today is the 4th of April and here are the headlines. The Trump administration's new tariffs on global trade partners, including a 27% duty on imports from India, will affect sectors like diamonds, smartphones, solar PV modules, and apparel. While certain products like critical minerals, energy products, and pharmaceuticals may be exempt, most of India's top exports, including pharmaceuticals worth $8 billion, are not. Petroleum oils derived from bituminous minerals could benefit, but tariffs on steel, aluminum, and automobiles remain unchanged. These measures could reshape trade relations with India, despite limited relief for some sectors. After nearly 12 hours of debate in the Lok Sabha, the Waqf (Amendment) Bill moved to the Rajya Sabha for further discussion yesterday. BJP MPs accused the Opposition of spreading misinformation, while TMC MP Mohammad Nadimul Islam criticized the Bill as cultural vandalism, accusing the Centre of seeking excessive control over Waqf. The Lok Sabha passed the Bill with 288 votes in favor and 232 votes against. The amendment now awaits a decision in the Rajya Sabha after being tabled by Kiren Rijiju. The Indian Army accused Pakistan of violating the ceasefire along the Line of Control in Poonch's Krishna Ghati sector. According to Army PRO Lt Colonel Suneel Bartwal, Pakistani forces intruded across the LoC and triggered a mine blast on April 1, followed by unprovoked firing. Indian forces responded in a "controlled and calibrated manner," keeping the situation under close watch. Tensions have risen despite the ceasefire agreement, with the Army asserting that India's borders remain secure and that further developments are being monitored.Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma strongly condemned the statement by Bangladesh interim government advisor Muhammad Yunus, who claimed that Bangladesh is "the only guardian of the ocean" for Northeast India. Yunus had stated that Bangladesh holds a unique position to benefit from the economic possibilities of the region. Sarma called the remark offensive, highlighting its connection to India's vulnerable "Chicken Neck" corridor, which connects the Northeast with the rest of India, emphasizing India's territorial integrity and strategic concerns.Bajinder Singh, a self-proclaimed Christian pastor, was sentenced to life imprisonment in a rape case dating back to 2018 by a Mohali court. Singh had been convicted for luring a woman under the pretext of helping her settle abroad, only to rape her and threaten to post a video of the act online. The court convicted him under IPC sections related to rape, voluntary hurt, and criminal intimidation. Singh had been arrested at Delhi airport in 2018 and released on bail until his recent conviction. This was the Catch Up on 3 Things by The Indian Express

Trump's plan to impose tariffs matching those charged by other countries has raised concerns about how the levies will be rolled out. With over 200 trading partners and thousands of tariff categories, the US could face an administrative nightmare. The initial focus is likely on the 20 countries the US has trade agreements with, with some speculating a blanket tariff could simplify the process but complicate global trade relations. That's all for the today. In the world of Indian cricket, the fervor of fans was palpable as they chanted 'India Maange CUP,' echoing their longing for victory. Rajdeep Sardesai and Nikhil Naz rewind the iconic moments of the 2011 world cup, the second time India brought the cup home, after 1983. What were the intriguing parallels between the 1983 and 2011 cricket World Cups? Sachin Tendulkar, the stalwart of the 1990s team, found himself alone on a challenging path without the likes of Dravids or Laxmans to support him. In the backdrop of 2011, Rajdeep and Nikhil shed light on the turbulent economic climate, marred by alleged scams during Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's tenure. This era was tinged with a 'feel bad factor,' reminiscent of the circumstances in 1983 when Punjab was gripped by insurgency and Kashmir faced turmoil. Virender Sehwag's revelation about Dhoni's superstition of consuming only khichdi piqued curiosity. Also, they recount the subplot of the India-Pakistan match in the World Cup, that was set against the backdrop of the 26/11 attacks. The Indian government's skepticism about Pakistani fans visiting Mohali, a bordering area with Lahore, added an element of uncertainty to the typical subcontinental hospitality. Finally they relive the dramatic finale, where the toss was tossed twice, Sri Lanka faced the finals without key players, and the stadium resounded with 'Vande Mataram' chants, sending shivers down spines. And why the question still lingers: Was Gautam Gambhir and not Dhoni truly deserving of the 'Man of the Match' title? Listen in to more untold stories. This month on CPR Perspectives — our flagship interview series commemorating the Centre for Policy Research's 50th anniversary — we bring you a conversation with KP Krishnan, an Honorary Research Professor at CPR. Krishnan spent three and a half decades in the IAS, retiring in 2019 as Secretary, Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. Over his years in the civil services, he served at positions in the government of Karnataka and the Union Government, as well as a stint at the World Bank, giving him a unique vantage point to observe the changes taking place in Indian economic and development policy following the 1991 liberalization. He has previously held the BoK Visiting Professorship in Regulation in the University of Pennsylvania Law School and served as the IEPF Chair Professor at the National Council of Applied Economic Research, in addition to stints as Visiting Professor of Economics, Public Policy and Regulation at the LBSNAA Mussorie, ISB Hyderabad and Mohali, Ashoka University and IIM Bangalore. In the first part of our conversation, I spoke to Krishnan about choosing a career in the civil services, how policy feedback operated within the IAS especially as the economy opened up and the question of being research-minded vs operational within the Indian bureaucracy. In the second part of the conversation, which you will receive later this month, we spoke about how external research was integrated into government systems, Krishnan's work at CPR looking at how well we understand Indian regulators and what advice he has for young scholars.

In the wake of a meh World Cup campaign for India, Chops and Srinath are in a post-mortem-esque mood; they bring to you their own version of armchair handwringing and criticism with hopes against hope that things will change for the better as far as Indian men's T20I cricket is concerned. With not much cricket of note during the week gone by, they shift their attention to trading personal stories and anecdotes from their favourite Tests from the delicious Australia in India rivalry. From epic ways to follow cricket as schoolboys to tales of Indian spin greats helping out Aussie spin novices, from the traditional Test centres of Delhi and Bangalore to the thrillers at Mohali and Dharamshala, it has been a clash for the ages and the 2023 edition can't start soon enough for these two. The twelfth edition of the QS World University Rankings by subject is out and springs a surprise on some of the IITs. Chennai-based Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences and Dhanbad's Indian School of Mines University made it to India's top 16 in the UK-based Quacquarelli Symonds's latest World University Rankings by Subject. Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences has been placed 18th globally for dentistry and IIT-ISM, Dhanbad is India's second-highest ranked at 26th place for mineral and mining engineering subject. 35 programmes offered by 16 Indian higher education institutions have managed to break into the top 100 in the world, in the latest QS World University Rankings by Subject 2022. This is a considerable improvement from last year, when 25 courses by 12 institutions made it to the top 100. Rising over a hundred places, The National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research, Mohali, made the highest jump in rankings by being placed 44th in pharmacy and pharmacology subject. Programmes from six of the eight Public Institutes of Eminence have figured in the top 100. IIT Madras ranked 30th for petroleum engineering, becoming India's highest-ranking Public Institute of Eminence. Others include IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IIT Kharagpur, Delhi University and the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru. The University of Delhi was ranked 41st in the development studies subject. The OP Jindal Global University has been placed at the 70th position for law and legal studies. It is the only Private Institute of Eminence and the only private institute, apart from Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences, to make it to the top 100. Public Institutes of Eminence remained better-represented in the rankings than private ones. QS said, after four and a half years since the inception of the country's ‘Institutes of Eminence' scheme, the recognised universities gained moderate ground on the global stage. A significant amount of autonomy in academic, administrative and financial matters has been provided under the regulatory framework to these institutions. Financial assistance of up to Rs 1,000 crore over a period of five years is granted by the government to each of the Public Institutions of Eminence. In the business and management studies, Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) Bangalore and Ahmedabad bagged top-100 ranks. So, what's the roadmap for Indian universities to improve their position in QS rankings? While Indian institutes have made great strides towards achieving world-class quality, more efforts are required in the areas of faculty-to-student ratio, international faculty and international students to climb the QS rankings of best universities and best programmes.
