The crew dive into 1967's "Night Fright" - not 1985's "Fright Night", with Roddy McDowell - and literally have trouble seeing the Hairy Gator Monster and B-movie stalwart John Agar, who is truly the best part of this underexposed, underwritten dreck . . . Yikes. The "Mutated Alligator" cocktail2.5 tbsp lemon concentrate 2 oz. rum, preferably pineapple or coconut.12 oz. Lone Star Beer (or a light lager) Start with cold/chilled ingredients. Lemonade concentrate should be just soft enough to scoop out with spoon. Our Monster Movie Season concludes with 2020s reimagining of The Invisible Man. Written and directed by modern horror master Leigh Whannell, The Invisible Man reinvents the iconic character as a narcissistic tech billionaire and stars Elizabeth Moss as his victim. Featuring a great modernisation of a classic character and the exploration of domestic abuse, manipulation, control and gaslighting, 2020s The Invisible Man plays it quiet and creepy with its lingering shots and stretched out moments of silence. But how does this reimagining stack up compared to the Universal classic? Join us as we dive in to The Invisible Man. Remember to hit that subscribe button and leave us a lovely review. Our monster movie season continues with 1933's The Invisible Man! Loosely adapting H.G Wells novel of the same name, The Invisible Man stars Claude Rains as the titular villain in a film that is equal parts mind-blowing special effects, classic monster movie horror and unintentional hilarity as an invisible naked man wreaks havoc and hijinks. We discuss some differences and similarities to the novel, the special effects and the iconic character that is The Invisible Man Remember to hit that subscribe button and leave us a lovely review. This week the boys take a trip to the beginning of the 2010s as they look at the often maligned and forgotten The Wolfman. Largely adapting the original story but blending in a bit more action and gothic horror vibes, 2010s The Wolfman features a star-studded cast comprised of Benicio Del Toro, Sir Anthony Hopkins, Emily Blunt and Mr Hugo Weaving (Mor-dor) and Rick Baker returning to the werewolf genre for some special effects. But why did such a star-studded cast result in a film that was pretty hated on upon release? Does The Wolfman hold up today? Join us as we discussed the modernisation of the original material, the development hell and the strange tonal mismatch as our Monster Movie Season continues. It's a full moon this week as the boys continue their Monster Movie Season with a 1940s classic in The Wolf Man. Featuring a star-studded line up of Lon Chaney Jr, Bela Lugosi and Claude Rains, The Wolf Man delivers some full moon frights, some 1940s gender stereotypes and some scenes that lead the boys on some x-rated tangents. But how does the film stack up nearly eighty years later? Is this just bark or does it still have a bite Remember to hit that subscribe button and leave us a lovely review. Monster Movie season officially begins with 1932's Universal Monster Movie The Mummy! The boys take a trip back in time as we discuss an early monster movie and one of the first on-screen iterations of the legendary Mummy. Featuring Boris Karloff as the titular villian and a heap of early horror tropes, The Mummy frightened audiences and paved the way for many iconic horrors that came after it. But how does it stack up almost 100 years later? Can the boys stop viewing it through a modern lens? Is it a product of its time or a timeless classic? First, the monster movie that’s split critics right down the middle. It’s brutal, strangely beautiful and far more emotional than you expect — with performances that will absolutely give you something to argue about in the group chat. Then, season two of a series that chronicles the re emergence of Godzilla is finally here, delivering bigger battles, sharper character drama and the kind of spectacle that makes you wish your TV was the size of a cinema screen.Plus, we’ve started the new origin story about a very famous teenage detective — and it’s moodier, darker and far more dramatic than you’d think. Three very different vibes. One very stacked weekend.THE END BITSLove binge-watching TV? It Came from Beneath the Sea (1955), The Monster that Challenged the World (1957), and The Giant Gila Monster (1959) There is something special about this decade, one that gave us so many sci-fi / horror films, with plenty of incredible monsters, whether they came from outer space, or right here from our backyard. And thanks to atomic energy, those monsters tended to be big ones! In fact... GIANT ONES! Just imagine a creature, from bugs to animals, and I'm sure someone in the 1950s made a movie about them- one where they were bigger and angrier! In this episode, we take a look at three different examples, each using a different method to bring its humongous beast to life, from stop-motion animation, to practical mechanical effects, to the good old-fashioned approach of using a real creature with undersized sets. No matter how they did it, all of these films deliver some damn fine entertainment. So grab the popcorn, crank up your rock 'n' roll, and sit back for some fun! Movies mentioned in this episode: 13 Ghosts (1960), Aliens (1986), The Amazing Colossal Man (1957), Attack of the Puppet People (1958), The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms (1953), Clash of the Titans (1981), Conquest of Space (1955), Creature with the Atom Brain (1955), Cult of the Cobra (1955), Curse of the Undead (1959), Dazed and Confused (1993), Dirty Mary Crazy Larry (1974), Earth vs. the Flying Saucers (1956), The Giant Claw (1957), The Giant Gila Monster (1959), Gila! (2012), The Green Berets (1968), Gremlins 2 (1984), Fantastic Voyage (1966), The Fly (1958), Frankenstein 1970 (1958), Horror at Party Beach (1964), The Howling (1981), It Came from Beneath the Sea (1955), Jason and the Argonauts (1963), The Killer Shrews (1959), The Monster of Piedras Blancas (1959), The Monster that Challenged the World (1957), Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975), Mr. Sardonicus (1961), The Spider (1958), Tarantula (1955), Teenage Zombies (1959), Them! (1954), Thing from Another World (1951), This Island Earth (1955), This Stuff'll Kill Ya! (1971), The Time Machine (1960), To Kill a Mockingbird (1962), Tormented (1960), The Vampire (1957), War of the Colossal Beast (1958), The Werewolf (1956), Zombies of Mora Tau (1957)
What happens when you mix a show-biz professional with a passion for the paranormal and the macabre? You get the brilliant, twisted mind of Eric Miller. This week on The Twilight Tonic, DeeDee sits down with the screenwriter behind The Shadow Men, Mask Maker, and the "mirth and mayhem" of the SyFy hit Ice Spiders. We explore Eric's journey through the entertainment industry, his work on legendary scripts, and the "terrifying" reality of being an indie producer. Whether he's writing sappy poems or creature features that catch the attention of The Late Show, Eric brings a wealth of insider knowledge that most fans never get to hear. Tune in for a look at the dark side of storytelling and the monsters—real and imagined—that keep us watching.
All right, you nerds - step into the dripping, wet Deep Dark Lounge, grab a drink and listen to our chat about 1983's "The Deadly Spawn". This episode is for folks who can enjoy a movie shot on 16mm film, made largely by amateurs on a $25,000 budget in the pre-CGI age, chock-full of fake blood and surprisingly good creature design and practical effects.
This week we continue our Oscar coverage with Guillermo del Toro's adaptation of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. We discuss the long road to making del Toro's dream project as well as the expensive Netflix production. After we discuss the production of the film, we dive into the movie itself and discuss the various themes throughout the film. In this special bonus episode recorded before their Season 8 finale discussion, Berly and LA score the ultimate get: Ben Edlund himself, the genius writer-producer who literally gave their podcast its name with that iconic "denim-wrapped nightmares" line from Season 6.Ben takes the hosts on a wild ride through his Supernatural journey, from joining the show in Season 2 (after binge-watching all of Season 1 on VHS tapes like some kind of monster) to navigating what he describes as the show's "muscle car, bro-y" culture while being the guy who brought whimsy and chaos to the series. He reveals the origin stories behind fan-favorite episodes like "Monster Movie" (spoiler: it involved solving the "good will hunting on the board" problem of classic Hollywood monsters), "The French Mistake" (originally pitched as more Broadway Danny Rose, Kripke made it meta perfection), and the Ghost Facers theme song (yes, that's Ben singing in falsetto). The conversation gets emotional discussing "Abandon All Hope" and the heartbreaking deaths of Ellen and Jo—a decision Ben clarifies wasn't solely his but one he committed to making as devastating as possible. He also defends killing too many characters (sort of), explains why Andy and Bobby should've stuck around for story leverage, and admits he probably wouldn't kill a dog in "Repo Man" if he wrote it today.Fair warning: Ben's a delightfully rambling genius who goes on tangents about everything from Bat Boy to Steely Dan production modes, and the hosts are living for every minute of it.Sources:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ben_EdlundFootnote: Since the recording of this interview, Berly and LA have, in fact, cried during another one of their episodes.Send us your review!Support the showTHANK YOU FOR LISTENING!Please rate and review Denim-Wrapped Nightmares wherever you get your podcasts! Writer, director, producer, and actor Macon Blair joins us this week to talk about his fascinating career, and his bold new take on a cult classic: the unrated remake of The Toxic Avenger (in theaters August 29).You've seen Macon on screen in films like Blue Ruin, Green Room, Thunder Road, and even Oppenheimer. He also won the Sundance Grand Jury Prize with his directorial debut I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore, starring Melanie Lynskey and Elijah Wood. Now, he's back with a gooey genre shift...reimagining Lloyd Kaufman's radioactive hero for a new generation while honoring the messy, subversive spirit of Troma. We dig into Macon's creative path from Murder Party with Jeremy Saulnier all the way to working with Elijah Wood and Peter Dinklage on this bonkers new Toxie. Along the way, we talk about practical effects (yes, intestines are involved), absurd kills that didn't make the cut, the challenges of redesigning an iconic monster, and why The Toxic Avenger might actually be the perfect antidote to the Marvel-ification of movies.and of course we ask the important question… when can we expect 2oxic 2venger: Toxie vs Dracula vs the Unicorn's Horn in Space? If you love cult cinema, superhero parodies, or just a good old fashioned over the top practical effect, you don't want to miss this conversation sooo...Follow Us on Social Media:Instagram & Threads: @mostlyhorrorpodTikTok & Twitter/X: @mostlyhorrorSteve: @stevenisaverage (all socials)Sean: @hypocrite.ink (IG/TikTok), @hypocriteink (Twitter/X)Enjoyed this episode? Czabe connects with PAUL CHARCHIAN to discuss the improbable stardom of a silly (but important) video game from back in the day. The boys nerd out over old video game consoles like the Dreamcast, as well as discuss what it's like to watch a horse have to get put down at the race track. The Minnesota assassin case is as horrific as it is illogical. And would you hedge out of a $13 bet that might pay $270,000?
