This week's guest, Ed Croft, joined Rockabilly Greg via Zoom on February 12, 2025. Ed began his music career in New York City subways with blues icon Carolina Slim, leading to local gigs with his rockabilly band, The Moonshiners. He earned a Bachelor's in Music Education from SUNY Fredonia (2013), where he studied with local masters and performed with Yo Yo Ma. Even before graduating, he launched his touring career, spending two years each with celtic rock band The Town Pants and bluegrass group The Jakobs Ferry Stragglers. While touring, Ed earned his Master's from Bowling Green State University, studying with renowned musicians and performing with artists like Mike Stern and Dave Samuels. Now based in Buffalo, NY, he's a prominent figure in the local music scene. As a freelance bassist, Ed has collaborated with Buffalo jazz greats and Buffalo Music Hall of Fam inductees, alongside national and international acts including Tom Roberts and Tia Brazda. He's a consistent award-winner, claiming the JazzBuffalo Poll for Best Acoustic Upright Bassist from 2017-2023. In 2018, he received both the Rising Star and John Hunt Jazz Artist of the Year awards, the first to achieve this dual honor. Ed currently holds the record for consecutive wins in any JazzBuffalo poll category.

This week on The Whiskey Trip, the journey takes us to Culpepper, Virginia, home to one of America's oldest craft distilleries—Belmont Farm Distillery. Big Chief sits down with Founder and Distiller, Chuck Miller. Known from his time on Discovery Channel's Moonshiners, Chuck helped folks like Tim Smith bring their products into the legal market. But Big Chief didn't come for the moonshine—he came to sample the whiskey Chuck has been distilling since 1989, using grain from his own farm. Chuck distills with a historic 1933, 3,000-gallon kettle still, seized from an illicit site by the state of Virginia. They begin the tasting with Belmont Farm's Virginia Bonded Whiskey, aged in used oak barrels to soften the oak influence. Next, they savor the Virginia Reserve 10-year-old whiskey, a cask strength beauty at 116 proof, made from a mash bill of 50% corn, 25% wheat, and 25% malted barley. Big Chief declares this the perfect whiskey for a desert island. Wrapping up the first half, they enjoy a smooth Virginia Bourbon at 92 proof—a testament to Chuck's incredible still. The second half kicks off with an American Single Malt, aged 4 years and bottled at 86 proof. It delivers a sharp taste and a stunning nose, underscoring why these whiskies are making waves. Then comes the Rye Whiskey, crafted from 70% rye, 25% corn, and 5% malted barley, offering that root beer candy note Big Chief loves. To close out, they sample a 100% corn whiskey at 100 proof, with flavors reminiscent of buttered popcorn. This week we'll be talking with Kathryn Smith, author of Methodists & Moonshiners: Another Prohibition Expedition Through the South…with Cocktail Recipes (2023, Evening Post Books). In her follow-up to 2021's Baptists and Bootleggers, Kathryn once again hit the road - this time following George Washington 1791 trail through the South to Augusta. She digs into the history of the towns along the way, especially during Prohibition. We'll also talk about some of that history, and about Washington's Mount Vernon distillery - one of the country's biggest - which he operated after his presidency. Kathryn will also share some of the colorful stories and tasty cocktails that she discovered in her travels.

This week on The Whiskey Trip Podcast, Big Chief traveled to Frankfort, Ky, for Bourbon on the Banks where he celebrated his 50th birthday. He had the opportunity to record a live show at the Kentucky History Museum with eight of his friends from around the Bourbon community. He started with Kelly Tennile and Brian Haara discussing Brian's book “Bourbon Justice” and whiskey on the reality TV show Moonshiners. He then invited Master Distillers, Lisa Wicker and Denny Potter, to talk about their new adventures and the rise of American Single malt. For the second half he started with Walter Zausch, from Whiskey Thief Distilling, and April Weller Cantrel, from Leiper's Fork Distillery, to discuss Craft Distilling on the American Landscape. Big Chief finishes the show with two legends of the whiskey industry, Andrea Wilson from Michter's Distillery, and Freddie Johnson, from Buffalo Trace Distillery. They discuss Bourbon tourism and the great experience of the Bourbon Trail. Freddie ends the show with a toast to Big Chief and to turning 50. We continue our journey through the hardest fought hashtag, #VIDtober, in New World Pictures Podcast history with a rare gem(?) - 1985's TERROR IN THE SWAMP or, as it's known in some circles, NUTRIAMAN:  THE COPASAW CREATURE.   If you're from Louisiana or spent any time in a Southern swamp, you've got the advantage with this episode.  We are way over our skis with the dialogue but we found a new saying that will become a NWPPVIP staple, "now, let's not go off half cocktail".  Cocktail?  Not sure what that means but we love it.   If you're not from Louisiana but you like aeronautics, you'll love this movie.  There are bi-planes, float-planes, helicopters and even airboats.   Maybe you're into MOONSHINERS on Discovery Channel.  This movie has moonshine too!  And, they know how to drink it right - out of Mason jars.    Most importantly, if you're into Nutria, you might like this movie.  It doesn't have as many Nutria as you'd expect.  And while we're on the subject, does a Nutria sound like a person playing a Kazoo?  

Old Republic Distillery & Jimmy Jaxx Shine Shack Season 3 Episode 11 It's a 2 for 1 episode as the CPP Crew sat down with Bill Mathias from Old Republic Distillery in York, PA and Ephrata, PA and Jimmy from Jimmy Jaxx Shine Shack in Dillsburg, PA and Red Lion, Pa. Old Republic Distillery is York's first distillery since prohibition. Jimmy could be on the Moonshiner's tv show, but instead is making some quality 'shine right here in Pennsylvania. We had a great time getting to know them, their story and all about the distilling process.
