As the demographics of investors continue to change, the wealth management industry is starting to pay attention to inclusion and diversity. Many firms hire, prepare, and advance underrepresented talents throughout the financial services industry and create programs to best serve an increasingly diverse clientele. This positive trend leads to more equitable and representative services for all investors. In this episode, Jack talks with Craig Pfeiffer, President and CEO of Money Management Institute (MMI). Craig is a senior financial services executive, following 29 years with Morgan Stanley Smith Barney and its predecessor firms. He transitioned from MSSB in 2012, where he was Vice Chairman and a member of the Executive Committee. From 2003 to 2011, he held a progression of senior positions, including the National Sales Group, responsible for marketing strategy and client communications, desktop technology, and brokerage-based banking. Additionally, Craig has been responsible for businesses, including retirement services and corporate equity solutions. Craig talks with Jack about his current projects and programs, why diversity and inclusion are becoming an area of focus in wealth management, and his outlook on where wealth management is headed in the future. Key Takeaways [01:08] - What Money Management Institute offers in the investment advisory industry. [03:11] - A list of Craig's current projects and programs. [08:31] - Wealth management as a people's business. [11:02] - Craig's outlook on where wealth management is headed. [15:48] - What Craig looks forward to over the next few years. [20:01] -The history of MMI's innovation in wealth management. [24:29] - Craig's three key takeaways. [26:08] - Craig's interests outside of work. Quotes [03:54] - "For the last number of years, there have been challenges around dealing with accumulated wealth and retirement assets, not only the income but doing so smartly around taxes, risk around location, etc." - Craig Pfeiffer [07:04] - "We have to go outside our industry, find people of color, and bring them into middle-level jobs. Fill out that sophomore, junior class, so the freshmen have an aspiration." - Craig Pfeiffer [22:06] - "There was no opponent to the SMA business other than a lack of awareness. You can't come to an MMI event without putting your gun down. You're coming to share best practices. You're coming to share ideas. You're coming to learn. And people have had that structural fiber that allows people to enjoy it." - Craig Pfeiffer [25:36] - "Being a leader in this business is rewarding. But you're only a leader if you have followers, and followers will only follow if they think they're listened to." - Craig Pfeiffer Links Craig Pfeiffer on LinkedIn Money Management Institute Steve Gresham The Execution Project Cheryl Nash InvestCloud Financial Advisor Magazine BlackRock Jed Finn Morgan Stanley Jenny Johnson Jasmine Jirele Franklin Templeton Allianz Life Burt White LPL Financial Carson Group Envestnet Ainslie Simmonds Pershing Michael Liersch Wells Fargo Microsoft PwC University of Virginia Darden School of Business Keith Glenfield Bank of America Troy Thornton Goldman Sachs Connect with our hosts LifeYield Jack Sharry on LinkedIn Jack Sharry on Twitter Subscribe and stay in touch Apple Podcasts Spotify LinkedIn Twitter Facebook

Do you know what is in what we are feeding ourselves, and our children? In today's episode, we're talking with Sterling Cook, the CEO of Green Compass Global and a proponent for the North Carolina Hemp Pilot program. Sterling has always had a passion for agriculture which led him to uncover the truth about the number of chemicals that are used in agriculture fields across the US. Tune in to learn why Sterling takes pride in Green Compass Global growing and formulating completely USDA organic hemp and CBD products, along with what you need to know and look for before going to the grocery store to keep your family safe from toxic chemicals. In This Episode: [05:00] Growing up in the largest growing region for tobacco influenced Sterling. [09:00] North Carolina market has changed due to importing goods from other markets. [12:00] Are farmers actually getting sicker because of the chemicals they are using on their crops? [18:40] Why Sterling only buys products that have USDA organic labels. [20:35] What does the USDA organic label mean for hemp products? [24:00] What does it mean to grow organic products? [26:00] Are all the ingredients that go into Green Compass Global's products organic? Key Takeaways: Oftentimes, we don't know where our food is truly coming from. Many farmers end up with cancer and different types of blood diseases that may be linked to chemicals used in their fields. Consumers need to be educated about what healthy produce looks like. Growing organic products starts with land that must be chemical-free for three to five years before growing anything. Bio: Sterling brings a diverse background in various leadership roles within the agriculture and financial services sectors. His most current role was that of chief restructuring officer for one of the largest sweet potato distributors in the world. He also spent six years as CFO in the produce industry, assessing organizational performance and guiding long-term strategy. Sterling has extensive knowledge in the areas of financial reporting and analysis, risk management and business development, human resources, accounting and administration, and overseeing a large-scale corporate farm operation. He's also held various positions with Wachovia Bank, Citi Smith Barney, Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, and Wells Fargo Advisors. Winnie Sun is a different kind of financial adviser. While many of her industry colleagues would strive for the same goals she does in providing the best, most high-quality customer service, not as many would take that goal to the level of launching an in-house multimedia company designed to provide financial advice. But, Winnie did just that. As the managing director and founding partner of Irvine, Calif.-based financial consulting firm Sun Group Wealth Partners, Winnie not only serves her corporate and individual clients, but she also serves as a thought leader in the financial realm. Through the firm’s multimedia company, Winnie works with her team to record daily video segments for YouTube that helps those of us a little less financially savvy to navigate the world of investing and our personal finances. This on-demand content (that also includes a podcast, heavy social media presence and increased emphasis on mobile-first) was created after many long discussions where the firm realized that the industry wasn’t adapting as fast as a customer’s needs. “We had a vision in mind to create a relevant, attractive and top-of-mind firm for the next generation,” Winnie says. In addition to changing her firm’s approach, Winnie also pens financial advice for Forbes and Nerd Wallet (among many, many others) and appears frequently on CNBC and CBS, in addition to a handful of other top networks. Prior to Sun Group Wealth Partners, Winnie held positions at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, and before that she had a less traditional financial services career path, working as an entrepreneur as founder of CH Entertainment. The Los Angeles-based television audience production company had clients ranging from America’s Funniest Home Videos to Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune.

What is an irrevocable pure grantor trust, and why would someone want one? In this episode, David Zumpano, a nationally recognized expert on asset protection, estate planning & elder law, discusses with me this little-known (although widely used) trust – what it is, why we use it, and who it is for. In Part 1, you will learn: about the goal of helping a loved one to protect their autonomy why people end up in nursing homes (how failing to plan makes this more likely) why retirement isn't necessarily what you think it is why we want to engage in an asset protection strategy for financial security in our later years what is an irrevocable pure grantor trust, and how it differs from tax trusts and revocable living trusts the history of trusts and what they were traditionally used for (tax trusts – the “traditional” irrevocable trust – no access, no control, no right to benefit) how trusts evolved over time – becoming the revocable living trust why the change in the laws in 2001 significantly changed the tax planning landscape, and ultimately the estate planning landscape how traditional irrevocable trusts aren't relevant to 99.8% of the American population how the irrevocable pure grantor trust (iPug (TM)) was created as a result of these changes what makes it unique as a planning tool how the common law of the United States support this type of planning as a legitimate tool for asset protection Dave's Law Review Article – where he sets out the case for the trust via common law …in Part 2, we will discuss exactly who this is for, how it works, and more! We will also discuss the types of assets that may be placed in a trust such as this one, and the benefits of its flexibility and protection.
