With early career roots in both equity derivatives and relative value fixed income, Lisa O'Connor is now the Co-CIO of Multi-Strategy Assets and Solutions at BlackRock. Here she oversees her team's development and delivery of a long only, systematic asset allocation process on behalf of the firm's clients. Our discussion first considers some of the lessons Lisa has derived from market risk cycles. In reflecting on vol episodes, she asserts that markets become very focused on relative value during times of crisis. That is, in higher risk environments, there's much greater differentiation across risk categories, as investors evaluate which assets can truly be defensive or at least weather the storm. We talk next about the model portfolio process and the mix of quantitative and fundamental factors that drive the asset allocation decisions. In contemplating the role of duration as a portfolio ballast, Lisa is concerned about risk premia in the back-end of the curve as a function of fiscal deficits. Instead, she sees value in diversifiers like gold, especially as China is increasing its holdings.  We also spend time on AI and the challenges of being too little or too heavily invested. In looking for evidence that the roaring capex cycle may have peaked, she is following emerging signs of spending discipline from hyper-scalers and tracking the reported ROIs from investment out 18 months.Lastly, we talk about the Fed easing cycle and its potentially positive implications for the market pricing of equities with more balance sheet leverage.I hope you enjoy this episode of the Alpha Exchange, my conversation with Lisa O'Connor.

Welcome back to the Alt Goes Mainstream podcast.I've been having many conversations with GPs and LPs over the past few months — and it feels like we've reached a point in private markets where both sides are trying to figure out how to navigate this space, from a product perspective and a technology perspective. To better understand these issues, I asked Lawrence Calcano, Chairman & CEO of iCapital, the largest platform in the space and a business that is in the middle of much of the flows of activity between GPs and LPs, to come back on the show to dive deeper into these topics. The main topic of conversation? The evolution of the different service models that enable GPs to unlock access to private markets for more LPs.As private markets welcomes more investors to the space, the how becomes as important as the why. How can investors gain access to private markets in ways that work for them? How can alternative asset managers better serve those investors? How can this all be done in a responsible, thoughtful way that sets up both investors and private markets for success in the long-term?Lawrence and I had a fascinating conversation. We discussed:How can operational efficiency across the entire value chain lower fees?Where do technological innovations like distributed ledger and AI factor into industry transformation? How important is education in driving adoption of alternative investments? How model portfolios and customization can transform the investor experience.Platform versus point solutions.Overestimating and underestimating market trends and market size. Why effortless is a myth. Thanks Lawrence for coming on the Alt Goes Mainstream podcast to share your thoughtful perspectives on the industry and its continued evolution.Show Notes00:00 Introduction to Ultimus Fund Solutions01:18 Welcome to Alt Goes Mainstream and Introduction to Lawrence Calcano02:26 Navigating Private Markets03:36 Holistic Solutions for GPs and LPs03:57 Importance of Education in Alts04:46 Understanding Alts in Portfolios06:50 Lowering Fees Across the Chain07:32 Technology and Tools for Advisors08:36 Success in the Wealth Channel10:21 Investment Product Innovations11:44 Direct Relationships in Private Markets13:26 Operationalizing Cost Structure Changes14:21 The Role of AI and Data14:43 Fee Evolution in Private Markets15:31 Operationalizing New Workflows16:06 Long-Term Industry Investments18:37 Collaboration in the Industry and Education20:34 Model Portfolios and Customization23:04 Addressing Liquidity Concerns24:18 Democratization of Private Markets25:14 Platform vs. Point Solutions31:14 The Importance of Scale38:53 Moving Fast and Moving Slow 40:33 Conclusion and Final ThoughtsA word from AGM podcast sponsor, Ultimus Fund SolutionsThis episode of Alt Goes Mainstream is brought to you by Ultimus Fund Solutions, a leading full-service fund administrator for asset managers in private and public markets. In this conversation Jeff Weniger, Head of Equity Strategy and Samuel Rines, Macro Strategists, Model Portfolios at WisdomTree Asset Management, join us to discuss various topics including the performance of the equity and bond markets, inflation, the labor market, and the real estate market. We explore the potential impact of rising yields on equities, the relationship between bonds and stocks, and the role of the US dollar as a hedge. We get into the challenges of navigating the current economic landscape and the reluctance of individuals and businesses to make changes in their financial strategies. Jeff and Sam unpack the impact of job mobility and housing on asset allocation. Jeff Weniger discusses the challenges of job relocation and the limitations it imposes on housing choices. He also highlights the rigidity of mortgage rates and the potential financial burden it creates for homeowners. Sam Rines adds that the lack of labor market dynamism and the preference for home remodeling contribute to the stagnation of the housing market. Then we shift to the changing dynamics of the US economy, with a focus on the transition from goods to services. Sam Rines emphasizes the normalization of the services sector and the potential lasting effect on the labor market. Our focus turns to a discussion about asset allocation and the push for domestic equity ownership in various countries. We explore the seismic shift in investment trends, with a focus on the changing dynamics of global markets. We dive into the history of investing in the early 2000s in emerging markets like Brazil, Russia, India, and China (BRIC), and how the focus has now shifted to investing in Japan, Korea and other markets where policy driving home bias is flourishing. We look at the role of China in the commodities market, particularly its insatiable appetite for base metals and gold. If anything, our entire conversation highlights the importance of diversifying portfolios and considering alternative asset classes like managed futures and commodities. Much like with traditional investments there will be financial advisors whom do not want to be responsible for managing their clients' cryptoasset portfolios. Investment selection, asset allocation, and ongoing portfolio management may not be where advisors want to spend their time and they lean on TAMPs and model portfolios to guide their investment decisions. WisdomTree was one of the early movers on crypto and has partnered with Onramp Invest to empower financial advisors with model portfolios that include cryptoassets. I'm joined by Jeremy Schwartz and Matt Kress to discuss why WisdomTree sought to add cryptoassets to their model portfolios, the research they relied on when building the portfolios, what they are seeing in their discussions with financial advisors, and more.

In today's episode, Rusty and Robyn talk with Suzanne Daly, Vice President of Model Portfolios at Fidelity Investments.  After working with brokers, dealers, RIAs, and multi-family offices at Fidelity for more than 18 years, Suzanne now oversees the managed account model portfolios and managed accounts distribution efforts. Together with her team, she helps firms optimize their tech stacks, assembling efficient workflows, and outsource investment management. Suzanne talks with Rusty and Robyn about the framework for holistic wealth planning, the criteria for outsourcing investment management, and the generational differences and challenges in the advising workplace. "A financial plan is the map of how individuals get from point A to point B. But there couldn't be a more personalized journey. Your point A looks a lot different than my point A, and my point B may look a lot different than your point B. So the beauty of what an advisor has to do is chart that course for the client." ~ Suzanne Daly Main Takeaways  Gen Z investors have changed the pace of advisor-client relationships. Baby Boomer investors put a lot of value in portfolio construction management, research, and due diligence whereas Gen Zs are considering the non-financial aspects of their assets (i.e. digital presence).  The three key principles of holistic financial planning include continuous engagement, creating comfortable and personable experiences, and comprehensive services. Outsourcing to third-party investment managers can help you save time, especially if they are experts in portfolio construction. Segmentation drives personalization across portfolios. It also ensures high performance and strong ties with every client. Advisors with high emotional intelligence (EQ), listening skills and empathy, are the ones who build and maintain lasting relationships with their clients. In your investment portfolio, you have the choice of making the amateur move – listening to the mainstream financial pundits who want you to feel FOMO over the latest stock picking craze – or the pro move of looking at how the best in the world do what they do, which is also backed by decades of research. We started this series a few weeks ago by focusing on overall financial structure and followed up last week with how to think about portfolio construction, and the result of that is the topic for this week – your asset allocation.Erik, Justin and Brandon define what asset allocation is, the complexity of asset classes, and how to avoid making the amateur investment moves. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS(00:30) The news you should know: US stock market doubles, Robinhood goes public, paid vaccinations, drop in poverty, how much are Olympic medals worth?(3:57) What is asset allocation? Model portfolios?(6:35) Adding human capital into the mix(9:23) The complexity of assets(11:30) Amateurs vs Pros(12:40) “It's really unfortunate, because you do have the Robinhood's of the world, the big brokerage houses that we all know, and they're so focused on marketing and generating this activity, and playing on emotions, it's really unfortunate. Because the education out there, the buy, the sell, the Jim Cramer's, they're all trying to get you to focus on the tool, and the tool's not what's going to make you successful, the tactic. It's more about stepping back and looking at the whole.” – Brandon Averill(14:56) “That's the whole goal here, is to make sure your assets, your overall net worth, your total net worth, is structured in a way, is built in a way to support your priorities.” – Justin Dyer(16:01) “Am I allowing [mainstream voices] to get my emotions riled up, to use my FOMO against me, to extract dollars out of my pocket as an amateur? Or, do I want to take a step back, and do I want to look at the best in the world at what they do? Because that's who you are as an audience. You're a professional athlete, you're a founder, you're a business owner, you're a wealthy individual, who has gotten that way by being a pro.” – Erik Averill(17:24) How are you measuring investment performance?

US earnings season is drawing to a close with 87% of S&P 500 companies beating expectations in the best quarter for earnings growth in over a decade, according to Refinitiv. In this week’s episode, IGTV’s Victoria Scholar speaks to Ben Gutteridge, director of Model Portfolios at Invesco, about what we learned from US earnings season and what lies ahead for US equities. Gutteridge says it has been a ‘spectacular’ quarter for earnings, partly due to base effects, but also thanks to vaccination efforts, alongside monetary and fiscal stimulus programmes. However, he says there is still a lot of uncertainty in the consumer sectors, including travel and leisure. In terms of investors’ concerns over inflation, Gutteridge is relatively optimistic, believing that inflation is most likely to be transient.  Any opinion, news, research, analysis, or other information does not constitute investment or trading advice.
