Douglas is a mean-ass, uh, spy? and lord of something or other.  Alex is the plainer sister of The Most Beautiful Woman in England but she's got some knockout knockers.  They throw chairs at each other and get kidnapped.  It's our sixty-ninth episode, The Sherbrooke Bride by Catherine Coulter! By the way, there's some discussion in this about whether a fancy Regency lady would pee in the woods on a long carriage ride - despite Google trying to autocomplete "how did travelling Regency women" with "use the litter box" (???) I did a little "research" and it seems she'd probably have used a bourdaloue, which is like a teacup for your tinkle, and not gotten kidnapped in the first place at all.  Here's a picture of one: The more you know!  Her maid would have had to deal with it, and of course this is one of those books that forgets about maids all the time.  Whatever.  That's not the biggest historical issue with this book and I don't know why it bothered us so much, compared to the ghost who gives GPS directions and weather reports. There's some pretty upsetting content in this book, including but not limited to the truly grotesque (but not graphic) sexual assault of a side character, a graphic (but not grotesque) miscarriage that's actually dealt with in a serious way, some "light ravishing" on the part of the main character and a major secondary character - there's a lot of crying during sex in this one.  There's also a ghost!  Napoleon! Proxy marriages that are also stealth trick marriages!  Magical boobs!  It's a lot!  Happy Episode 69 to us!

Hedy Lamarr was a clever and complex woman. Although Hedy was a brilliant inventor and incredibly shrewd, during her life she was primarily known for her successful career as a glamorous icon of old Hollywood and many marriages. Out of the spotlight (or using it to her advantage), Hedy proved herself to be a progressive thinker, working to eliminate boundaries not just for herself but all women.  The innovation in Hedy was Inspired by her father. As a young child, he often spoke to her about the mechanics of machines and challenged her to think critically.  During WWII, Hedy and her friend and avant-garde piano composer, George Antheil designs and shared a patent for an invention that prevented signals transmitted over radio from being intercepted by the enemy. This secret communication system was designed with the purpose of blocking Nazis from intercepting Allied transmissions. This invention was called Frequency hopping. Rather than broadcasting over a single channel, messages would jump seemingly at random across many channels. As a nod to Antheil, their invention used 88 channels like the keys on a piano.  1997 Hedy and George Antheil received the Pioneer Award from the Electronic Frontier Foundation for their contributions to the field of spread-spectrum technology. Member of the awarding committee said this about the coveted award “Ironically, this tool they developed to defend democracy half a century ago promises to extend democracy in the 21st century.” Hedy's inventions were revolutionary and have led us to modern-day Wi-Fi. Young women entrepreneurs today can find inspiration in the story of Hollywood star Hedy Lamarr. In her time, she was known as the Most Beautiful Woman in the World, but it was her groundbreaking work as an inventor of a secure communications system that has turned her into a legend. Recorded live at the Whitby Hotel in New York, host Michael Kantor moderates a panel including Academy Award-winning actor Susan Sarandon, Rutgers professor and IEEE fellow Emina Soljanin, and filmmaker Alexandra Dean, as they discuss Lamarr’s legacy. Co-executive produced by Sarandon, and directed by Dean, with major support by the Alfred P.
