But the joint operation between British Airways and Air France suffered several business difficulties that led to the decision to stop flying the supersonic planes. Some of the difficulties were linked to publicity about a deadly Concorde crash in 2000. That incident involved an Air France airliner crashing shortly after taking off from Paris. The crash claimed a total of 113 lives. Boom Supersonic says its planned Overture airliner will be designed to transport passengers from the U.S. East Coast across the Atlantic to Europe in about 3-and-a-half hours. The flight with normal passenger jets takes about eight hours. Amy Marino Spowart is the president and chief executive officer at the National Aeronautic Association. She told The Associated Press the latest supersonic test flight suggests “the future of aviation is here and now.” Spowart added, “Not only is there hope for faster and better commercial flight, but Boom proves that it can be done sustainably.” Boom Supersonic has said its planned supersonic airliner will be designed to run on up to 100 percent sustainable aircraft fuel. Such sustainable fuels are made from non-petroleum products, such as food waste or other biomass materials. Both XB-1 and Overture are made mostly from a carbon-based composite material to provide “a strong, lightweight structure,” the company said. NASA's supersonic aircraft – built together with Lockheed Martin – is called X-59. It is also an experimental plane that is seeking to test the level of noise produced by supersonic travel. Currently, supersonic flights are banned over land because of the loud noise they produce. NASA has explained it plans to carry out testing this year of the X-59 aircraft, which has been designed and engineered to operate at lower noise levels than other supersonic aircraft. The tests – to take place at supersonic test centers in California – are designed “to prove the quiet supersonic technology works as designed.” NASA said that after that testing is done, the agency plans to begin community reaction studies, beginning in 2026. These will involve flying the X-59 over several cities and then asking people on the ground to share their thoughts on the level of noise they heard. NASA has said the X-59 – which measures 30 meters long and nine meters wide – is expected to fly at 1.4 times the speed of sound. That is about 1,500 kilometers per hour.

The American space agency NASA is preparing to test a new supersonic airplane that could help establish a new generation of superfast aircraft. The new aircraft is called X-59, and it was built in partnership with American defense contractor Lockheed Martin. The experimental plane is part of a NASA project, or mission, called Quesst. The mission aims to collect data in the United States on the level of noise produced by supersonic travel. Supersonic describes a vehicle that travels faster than the speed of sound: about 1,235 kilometers an hour. The data Quesst gathers could lead U.S. officials to change rules that currently ban supersonic flights over land. NASA says the X-59 was developed to reduce the loudness of the sonic boom it produces when breaking the sound barrier to very low levels heard on the ground. A few U.S. companies are exploring ways to restart supersonic passenger travel for the first time since 2003. That is the year the Concorde aircraft stopped flying. The Concorde was the world's first supersonic passenger jet. It was operated jointly by Britain and France. The Concorde flew at speeds more than twice the speed of sound, British Airways explained. This meant it could travel from London to New York in about three-and-a-half hours. The same flight took about eight hours with normal passenger jets. The new supersonic planes being developed make less noise and use less fuel than the Concorde. But manufacturers are under pressure from environmental groups and airports to meet the same noise and carbon emission limits as traditional planes. NASA and Lockheed Martin recently showed off the X-59 plane during an event in Palmdale, California. At the ceremony, NASA Deputy Administrator Pam Melroy called the development of the supersonic aircraft a “major accomplishment.” She noted that members of the NASA and Lockheed Martin teams had worked hard to take the X-59 from an idea to reality “in just a few years.” Melroy added her hope that the X-59 “will help change the way we travel, bringing us closer together in much less time.” The aircraft measures 30 meters long and nine meters wide. NASA said in a press release that the X-59 is expected to fly at 1.4 times the speed of sound, or about 1,500 kilometers per hour. The aircraft's design, shape and technologies will permit it to reach high speeds while producing “a quieter sonic thump,” the agency explained. The X-59 has not yet completed a test flight. But NASA officials have said they expect that to happen sometime this year. The team will be carrying out other tests in the coming months, including instrument experiments, fast engine runs and ground testing. Once the aircraft has been cleared to fly, it will be deployed to several cities across the U.S. to collect data on the sounds the plane produces and how people on the ground react to the noise.

Like most engineers, Michael Armstrong was first inspired by his high school English class…Wait, that can't be right? Indeed it is! Since then, Armstrong's career has taken numerous unexpected twists and turns that include pistachios, designing a PhD program on a napkin, and becoming an unintentional Disney Imagineer. Armstrong got involved in electric aviation long before it was made cool by Uber (yes, Uber). During his distinguished career, he has worked with many company names that we would associate with aviation, including NASA and Rolls-Royce. Armstrong has long been asking the questions: “What does the next aircraft of the future really look like? And, how do technologies like electrification change the way you think about what a good aircraft looks like?” And now, he is leading efforts to create high voltage, high power, high-reliability battery systems for electric aircraft propulsion. This includes a current program to complete the first flight certification of a battery that will propel the all-electric Diamond Aircraft eDA40. The technology is amazing, but Armstrong's stated goal is for “the battery to be the most boring system on the plane.” And that drives his focus on safety and reliability. Drawing from his career working on electric aviation from full systems down to batteries, Armstrong provides interesting insights on battery technology, electric aviation, and even deciding upon an engineering career path. You will not want to miss this fascinating Moore's Lobby episode as he discusses: -How electric propulsion will allow designers to complete reimagine aircraft -The massively different challenges presented by electric aviation when compared to electric vehicles -Working on multiple NASA X-plane programs, including the flying harmonica -Why after delivering a battery, “in some ways your job has just begun.”

Email us! Transcript: EP39 - Blade Entering the EVTOL Market; Boeing 787 Fuselage Issues and NASA X-59 Milestones All right, welcome back to the struck podcast. I'm your co-host Dan Blewett on today's show. We've got a good docket of topics. Number one, we're going to talk about the eco pulse hybrid designs. Uh, interesting new aircraft. And we'll talk about some of that. Uh, NASA supersonic X-59 has a wing, a wing milestone. So some, uh, good work from NASA. And we'll chat a little about that. And then obviously Virgin galactic, um, still big and has his hands in lots of different industries, but we're going to chat a little bit about their space tourism play in their headache. Concerning, but, um, sit still safe, sort of a board as part of the recent, one of the recent test flights in our engineering segment, we're going to talk about the Boeing 787, continuing to have fuselage issues. Some new slight defects have been detected. And we're going to chat a little bit about the way carbon fiber and other materials are machine and manufactured and how, just how difficult it is to get some of these really high tolerance parts built. Right. And then lastly, we're going to chat about blade, which is a helicopter, a rental service and their potential entrance into the EVTOL market. So, Allen, how are things going? We're closing on the holidays. Allen Hall: Yeah, it's going to snow first big grill, snow storm, or the season is happening now, which means all our aerospace engineering companies in the Northeast are preparing for the worst, but that's okay. You know, it's part of this seasonal shift and we're getting close to the holidays, Christmas and new year and Hanukkah and everything's starting. So that's exciting. Dan: Yeah. It's um, well it's been currently snowing and. It's kind of half raining most of the day today. So it's definitely feeling Christmas-y that's for sure. So jumping into it today, what is, uh, striking to you about this eco pulse distributed propulsion hybrid aircraft it's coming out of France? Um, this is news from to lose. Um, but tell us a little bit about what this propulsion system is and what do you think the long-term ramifications are? Allen Hall: Well, it's first off, it's being funded by the French government. And it is essentially a consortium of French companies like, uh, saffron that makes electric motors and it is, it'd be very similar to what happened to the United States when there's government funding for a project where you're trying to. Boost the industry and get to the next steps. Uh, so the airplane itself, I don't know if the airplane's all that important. Maybe it is in a longer scheme of things, as much as developing the system components and the products that they can offer worldwide in which. They are totally going to do so think of it as a, as a government funded jobs program a little bit, but also a technology development program that gives those companies resources. So the, the company names, it was dark, soft run and Airbus, um, tied in with w what was it? Core act, a civil aviation resource council in France to tie them all together and see where they can come up with an aircraft. It will be a demonstrator more than likely just to. Get something out there, but I know there's, if you, if I'm working a lot of different aircraft programs concurrently right now, and you hear those names pop up more frequently in the last six months, uh, for electric propulsion systems. So, you know, that, that, that funding, that the government France is actually going somewhere there actually,

Television and movies often portray black holes as tunnels for time travel or as cosmic vacuum cleaners sucking up all light and matter within their vast reach. What in fact are black holes? How do we know that they even exist? Join us to learn about recent NASA X-ray observations of these phenomena, and about the work being done at NCSU that models the accretion of "normal" stars into black holes as well as the existence of super-massive black holes believed to be found in most galaxies.
Abstract 1:Real-time logic (RTL) is useful for the verification of a safety assertion with respect to the specification of a real-time system. Since the satisfiability problem for RTL is undecidable, the systematic debugging of a real-time system appears impossible. With RTL, each propositional formula corresponds to a verification condition. The number of truth assignments of a propositional formula can help us determine the specific constraints which should be added or modified to derive the expected solutions. This talk describes this debugging approach and how it can be embedded into autonomous systems. We have implemented a tool called ADRTL for automatic debugging of RTL specifications. The confidence of our approach is high as we have effectively evaluated ADRTL on several existing industrial applications, including the NASA X-38 Crew Return Vehicle avionics.Abstract 2:Embedded systems are becoming ubiquitous and are increasingly interconnected or networked, making them more vulnerable to security attacks. A large class of these systems such as SCADA and PCS has real-time and safety constraints. Therefore, in addition to satisfying these requirements, achieving system security emerges as a critical challenge to ensure that users can trust these embedded systems to perform correct operations. One objective in a secure system is to identify attacks by detecting anomalous system behaviors. This part of the talk describes the challenges in the design and implementation of such intrusion detection system (IDS), addressing (1) accuracy: the IDS identifies no or as few false positives as the resource (time, space, power, etc.) and/or policy constraints allow, and no or as few false negatives as the resource and/or policy constraints allow; (2) efficiency/timeliness: the IDS does not violate the host embedded system's application deadlines and has a reasonable space overhead; (3) scalability: the IDS can scale to work with large embedded systems; and (4) power-awareness: the IDS does not significantly reduce the operational period of battery-powered embedded systems. We conclude with an outline of one of several promising embedded IDS approaches under investigation. This approach is based on automatic rule-base generation and semantic analysis.
