Should you drink Champagne from a white wine glass or a flute? What is the ideal temperature range for serving Champagne? What might surprise you about the technical side of Champagne production? In this episode of the Unreserved Wine Talk podcast, I'm chatting with Christopher S. Ruhland, author of Press for Champagne: A Guide to Enjoying the World's Greatest Sparkling Wine. You can find the wines we discussed at https://www.nataliemaclean.com/winepicks   Giveaway Three of you are going to win a copy of his terrific book, Press for Champagne. To qualify, all you have to do is email me at natalie@nataliemaclean.com and let me know that you've posted a review of the podcast. I'll choose three people randomly from those who contact me. Good luck!   Highlights Why does Chris prefer using a white wine glass instead of the traditional elongated flute for Champagne? What's the problem with clear glass bottles for Champagne? What is the ideal temperature range for serving Champagne? Which point in history does Chris consider to be the most pivotal moment in the development of Champagne as we know it today? What might surprise you about the technical side of Champagne production? Which notable contributions have women made in Champagne history? What was the significance of the Champagne riots in 1911? How did the Champagne region recover after the World Wars, and what were the lasting effects on the industry? How does chalky soil contribute to the hallmark qualities of Champagne? What's the difference between the oxidative and reductive styles of Champagne? Why don't we hear more about reserve wines? What was it like to drink decades-old Champagne, and how are the bubbles affected by aging? What is dosage, and what is its role in Champagne production? How can you plan the best trip to make the most of the Champagne region?   Key Takeaways I'm all for the white wine glass for Champagne, Chris says, but I don't like flutes because you can't smell the wine. They're too thin to sense the aromas from the wine. I use tulip-shaped glasses and if you go to the Champagne region, you'll see these in use all over the place. Chris says that temperature affects the texture of the wine and the bubbles. You wouldn't want it colder than it gets in your refrigerator. The point is to start at a cold temperature. Chris says most people are surprised at how much work it takes to make a bottle of Champagne. It is very much a human-made product in that it requires a lot of separate steps done by hand.   About Christopher S. Ruhland Christopher S. Ruhland trained and worked as a lawyer for thirty years before becoming a mediator. He holds the Diploma in Wines & Spirits from the Wine & Spirit Education Trust and he has passed the French Wine Scholar, Bordeaux Master-Level, and Rhône Master-Level examinations given by the Wine Scholar Guild, all with Highest Honors. What sparked Chris' interest in Champagne in particular? How did Chris' legal career and writing skills transfer over to writing about Champagne? How does Press for Champagne differ from other wine books in its approach and focus? Why does Champagne have a universal appeal, even for those who aren't wine enthusiasts? How did Champagne become the wine of celebration? What are some common myths about Champagne that Chris debunks in Press for Champagne? How has the "Champagne only comes from Champagne, France" campaign impacted consumer awareness and the global sparkling wine market? What are some of the ways popular culture has impacted certain brands of Champagne? Did the monk Dom Perignon invent Champagne? How has social media shaped our perception of Champagne? What is Chris's perspective on the pricing of Champagnes and how it affects accessibility?   Key Takeaways No, the Benedictine monk Dom Perignon did not invent champagne. Champagne wasn't even sparkling until after his death. But what is true, Chris explains, is he was a cellar master of the abbey and an important figure in Champagne wine production and in advancing its quality. People talk about Grand Cru champagne with reverence as if it's categorically better than champagne without that distinction. That's not true. You can find Grand Cru champagne, which is not very good. And then you have champagnes like Louis Roederer's Cristal and Dom Perignon that are not Grand Cru champagnes. With champagne, there is such variety and so many different styles that you really can drink it throughout an entire meal, and it can all work differently based on what you're eating.   About Christopher S. Paul talks about finding the balance between underwriters saying yes to everything versus saying no to everything, to focus their time on selecting exactly the right opportunities that bring profitability and reduce claims risk. The first decision an underwriter has to make is where to use their time - so Copilot helps triage opportunities based on their attractiveness and alignment to the strategic book priorities.  Paul also discusses technology tools and changes applicable to commercial insurance, focusing on the right opportunities and understanding risk exposures in the right context. He sees that underwriters need to be better armed to address the complexity and nature of claims and new lines. He does not see a world in which there are fewer underwriters, or less work to do. instead, he sees winning carriers and MGAs as those who understand where to use technology to augment their underwriters' skills and not fall into the trap of thinking tech will drive personnel cost savings. Cornelius Pietzner -- All Real Living Is Meeting: The Role of Inner-work in Cultivating Community

Cornelius Pieztner, currently a high-impact financial professional, spent the first 45 years of his life at Camphill - a network of intentional communities co-founded by his father Carlos Pietzner. The communities were designed for children and youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Through his interactions and work with teenagers with pronounced developmental disabilities, Cornelius realized that his primary work was not to fix the "other", but to work on himself to cultivate tolerance, acceptance, and love. "The inner aspect of community" as he calls it, became one of the central inquiries of his life and work - "What would be needed for an aggregation of people to understand themselves and experience themselves as a community of people?" For more than 30 years, Cornelius has carried this inquiry into leading roles at the intersections of philanthropy, investment, social impact enterprises, transformative education focusing on the well-being of the planet, and commercial ventures toward a human-centered economy. Currently, he serves as the CEO of Alterra Impact Finance GmbH, an impact investment, management, and advisory firm in Switzerland with private equity investments in several European companies. Until 2021, he served as Managing Director of Mind & Life Europe, founded by the Dalai Lama. He also served as Chief Financial Officer on the Executive Board at the Goetheanum, General Anthroposophical Society, Switzerland (2002-2011), with affiliates in 90 countries and approximately 10,000 related institutions in agriculture, medicine, and therapy, (Waldorf) education, ethical banking and business, and the arts. He was the President of Camphill (life-sharing) Communities in North America. Growing up in a community that had no concept of individual ownership or income, Cornelius also developed a deep interest in understanding money and working with it in new ways to foster greater belonging. His earliest experiment was to set up a youth group fund with the principle, "put what you can, take what you need". His various leadership roles in finance have been guided by his vision of "positive economy" to catalyze a shift from consumerism to "enoughness", rationality to wisdom, and self-interest to compassion for others. Cornelius is also the steward of the Pietzner Art Collection, composed of over 1,500 artworks from his father and several other revolutionary artists. He is a partner at NOW Partners and serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the Karl Konig Institute in Berlin Germany, among other privately held European companies. He has also served on Advisory Boards for Gross National Happiness Center in Bhutan, B Corps Europe, Partnering for Global Impact, and OOOM World. He is the author and editor of several books (Candle on the Hill, Village Life) and presents on various topics in conferences internationally. Born in Northern Ireland in 1957 and having grown up in Pennsylvania, USA, he received his degree (Highest Honors) in Political Science from Williams College, Mass., and was awarded a Thomas J. Watson Fellowship. Pietzner lives near Basel, Switzerland and Vienna, Austria. In this episode, we deviate from our typical format of interviewing a pastor, to host a conversation with Pieter Valk from Equip on how the Church can live into loving and serving the LGBT+ community. Through conversations with pastors across Canada and beyond, we know that this topic holds a lot of questions and tensions for the pastor. To speak to that, we invited Chris Price, Teaching Pastor at The Way Church, to wade with Pieter into not just the theology of sexuality, marriage and singleness, but also how pastors can bridge the gap that often exists between the Church and this community. In the conversation they discuss Pieter's personal story of enduring same-sex attraction, why he landed outside the revisionist sexual ethic, what he wished pastors said to him growing up & much more. We hope this conversation serves to fuel your empathy and consideration for what it might look like for the Church to love a community that's dear to the Lord's heart. Bio | Pieter Valk is the director of EQUIP, a Nashville-based consulting ministry that partners with churches to become places where LGBT+ people can belong and thrive according to an orthodox Christian sexual ethic. Obesity is a chronic disease and is associated with related conditions such as cardio vascular disease(heart attack and stroke),type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers. The current understanding of obesity demonstrates both biological and environmental factors like economics and infrastructure, psychosocial and developmental issues as important  contributors as well as newer understanding of their role in influencing the hypothalamus. New treatment strategies and medications demonstrate opportunities for success in management of obesity. Guest:   Joshua Thaler, MD, PhD. Associate Professor of Medicine, Division of Metabolism, Endocrinology and Nutrition.   Dr. Thaler graduated with a major in Biochemistry from Harvard College (Magna Cum Laude with Highest Honors, and on the Dean's List), then obtained an MD and a PhD in Biomedical Sciences from the University of California, San Diego and the Salk Institute (where he was a Chapman Scholar and a Lucille P. Markey Fellow). He short-tracked through the Internal Medicine residency program at UW and was an endocrinology/metabolism fellow, working in Dr. Michael Schwartz's laboratory. He is currently an Associate Professor at the UW Diabetes Institute.     Research Interests   Dr. Thaler's focus is the hypothalamic regulation of energy homeostasis and the alterations to this system during obesity pathogenesis. His primary project investigates hypothalamic inflammation and its relationship to high fat diet-induced weight gain with an emphasis on the role of glial cells (astrocytes and microglia) in modulating the neuronal regulation of energy homeostasis. In particular, his research aims to determine whether glial cells provide a repair response to diet-induced damage to critical hypothalamic neurons and whether interventions targeted at glia may therefore influence the course of obesity. A second study examines the role of inflammatory signaling in hypothalamic neurons and microglia in obesity-associated insulin resistance and diabetes. Additionally, Dr. Thaler's research is examining the metabolic role of POMC neurons through modification of atypical protein kinase C signaling. During This Episode We Discuss: Obesity versus  being overweight, what Body Mass Index (BMI) defines each condition. Causes of obesity. New data on root causes  Health impact of obesity The individualized approach to treating obesity Investigations and Research into the role of the brain (Hypothalamus) in obesity and obesity management. Successful strategies for managing obesity, including newer medications and Bariatric Surgery Quotes (Tweetables): The US obesity prevalence was 41.9% in 2017-March 2020 BMI 25-30 = overweight BMI 30 or greater = Obesity   “Obesity by many estimates is at least 50% if not more based on inherited genes. That susceptibility is being acted on by the environment, You shouldn't take the fatalistic view I've got these genes and there is no hope”                                                                                                                 Dr Josh Thaler “The Heavier you are, the higher your energy expenditure. Thus we can't say that in general, that people who are overweight have a slower metabolism”                                                                                                                  Dr Josh Thaler “How much weight needs to be lost in order to reverse either the disease that's established or lower the risk of the one that hasn't come yet..  You don't have to go back to your original normal weight..What the data suggests is that even 5-10% weight loss from wherever your current weight,is sufficient to reverse a lot of things(associated diseases) that are associated with obesity”                                                                                                                   Dr Josh Thaler “The (newer injectable)weight loss medications do not cure (obesity), if you stop them, the weight will come back…there is no reason to believe it changed your biology in some way that's permanent”                                                                                                                                      Dr Josh Thaler Recommended Resources: CDC https://www.cdc.gov/obesity/basics/index.html   Obesity Canada ( formerly called,The Canadian Obesity Network). Graduating from Georgia Tech in 1991 with Highest Honors in Electrical Engineering, Angela Fox has often been asked how she moved from such a technical education with early roles in corporate systems and strategy into a life where she is transforming companies and communities, building cultural facilities, and serving as a catalyst for change and role model for impact and meaning in every area she touches. The answer is simple. At engineering school, she learned to solve problems – the more complex the issue, the more elegant the solution. She walked away with a Co-Op student's awareness that there are many areas where a creative mind is key, that molds are meant to be broken, and that there is no situation that cannot be made better. As the CEO of the Crystal City Business Improvement District (BID), she was asked to create an organization that would change the way people see, perceive, and experience Crystal City. In a very short time and at a nationally-recognized level, she did just that. From a long-standing belief that the area was a “concrete canyon” that no one would visit without an appointment to the shortlist for Amazon's HQ2, as well as winner of the International Downtown Association's Pinnacle “best of the best” award because of her strategic implementation of competitive programs, as well as her ability to engage and infuse energy into the community as a whole. People are the heart of any company, campus, culture and community, and the only way to bring about real, active, and repeatable transformation is to enlist their energy as stakeholders in the process, the progress, and the ultimate success. As a 32-year, Tesla-driving vegetarian who runs 5Ks, cycles thousands of miles every year, and practices all forms of yoga, all while being committed to her community by serving and chairing local arts boards, and she inspires people to embody the changes they seek to achieve. She is a dynamic speaker, dedicated mother, friend, and proud promoter of the philosophies and processes that she learned on the ground throughout her career. She has traveled all over the world (6 continents, 72 countries, and 47 states), worked with a Japanese Security Software firm as a C-level coach and interim Marketing VP, and run her own consulting firm providing business strategy, marketing and executive coaching services to individuals, corporations, and non-profits. She has re-introduced many people to the personal and business value of building lives that matter, to them, helping them become active contributors, board members, citizens and participants. Whether launching Verizon.net, introducing new programs at Cultural Tourism DC, or building an award-winning new theater in downtown DC, she is dedicated to her community and is honored to forever be a Ramblin' Wreck from Georgia Tech! In this episode of Smart Energy Voices, host John Failla is joined by Zephyr Taylor, Global Director of Renewable Energy, Mars Inc. This engaging conversation took place during Smart Energy Decisions' Renewable Energy Forum. They discussed Mars' progress against its “Sustainable in a Generation” plan and its ambitious emissions reduction and renewable energy goals. Listen to hear more about Zephyr's work at Mars and for bonus content exclusive to this episode only! You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... Zephyr's background and role at Mars [02:07] Mars' “Sustainable in a Generation” plan [04:05] Sourcing renewables in global markets [08:26] The biggest challenge in a global portfolio [13:42] What's next for Mars Inc? [16:32] Zephyr's journey to renewables [21:45] Zephyr's proudest accomplishment [28:36] What would Zephyr like for the future? [33:10] Sustainable in a Generation Mars' “Sustainable in a Generation” plan encompasses two key categories: a healthy planet and healthy people. As a renewable energy commercial head, Zephyr supports the healthy planet/ environmental side of the equation. The first goal for the company's sustainability initiative is decarbonization. Their internal goal is 67% by 2050 of all of their emissions, and, 100% of Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2040. Renewable energy is the strategy Mars is using to address most of their Scope 1 and 2 emissions, pursuing these deals because most of their direct emissions come from energy usage. Mars' renewable energy targets include their thermal usage, principally natural gas burned for industrial processes in gas boilers at their factories. This problem is a fundamentally different challenge than solving renewable electricity needs from a commercial and technological perspective. That energy subsector is in a much earlier stage, with pilot projects such as hydrogen and anaerobic digesters. Because of its unique challenge, renewable thermal will become an increasingly disproportionate part of Zephyr's day. He looks forward to being part of Mars' finding the most viable commercial models to replace fossil gas and integrate into their global portfolio. Global renewable energy deals The U.S. was Mars' first market to make a major power purchase agreement. In 2015, that came in the form of a large wind farm in Texas that covered 100% of Mars' electricity needs in the country. That set in motion the global perspective of addressing renewable energy needs through large, offsite deals. In countries where offsite deals aren't available, Mars looks for alternative deal structuring options such as onsite, behind the meter, and shorter-term compilations to achieve as much renewable energy coverage as possible. There are some commonalities in the approach to evaluating different markets and renewable energy deal structures - but to a large degree, that's where the commonality ends. Understanding individual markets Energy and renewables are some of the most hyper-localized markets and sectors for any commodity. The way energy is bought and sold, key market participants, the counterparties to any deal, and the regulatory environment differ drastically between markets, especially in less regulated markets. The intriguing aspect is that there can be situations where there are markets with a developed renewable energy sector from some perspectives. However, the regulatory, commercial, and contracting environments are such that you can't easily contract bilaterally. The processes from one market aren't going to transpose smoothly into another. Every individual market requires a unique approach to do the market assessment and to understand the market risk and design to get the best deal for your company. He continues to be a Partner in the 1776 Seed Fund.David previously served as the Director of Business Development and Strategy under two mayors in Washington DC, where his responsibilities included attracting businesses to the city, promoting entrepreneurship, and overseeing economic development strategy. David led support to Washington’s first startup incubators and guided the city's response to the emergence of ride hail services. Before moving to Washington David served as Executive Director of NYC Business Solutions in New York City under Mayor Bloomberg. David holds an MBA with Highest Honors from Harvard Business School, an M.Phil in Land Economy (Urban Planning) from Cambridge University, and a BA with High Honors from Swarthmore College. He has been selected as a Truman Scholar, a Gates Scholar, and a Baker Scholar. Transcript: Host:Welcome to another edition of Engineering Influence, a podcast by the American Council of Engineering Companies. I am pleased today to welcome David zipper onto the program. David is a visiting fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School's Taubman Center for State and Local Government where he examines the interplay between urban policy and new mobility technologies. David's perspective on urban development is rooted in his experience working within city hall, as well as being a venture capitalist, a policy researcher, and a startup advocate. He has consulted with numerous startups and public officials about regulatory strategy. David is a published article appearing in Wired, The Atlantic, Slate, and Car and Driver. He's spoken to groups such as the consumer electronics show South by Southwest, and focuses on topics such as mobility as a service and micro mobility and the linkages between public transit city regulations and private shared vehicles. David was also one of the panelists on the ACEC Research Institute's most recent round table discussion on the future of engineering focused on the future of funding in a post COVID-19 environment. And David welcome onto the show. Really great to have you. David Zipper :Thank you very much. It's a pleasure to be with you. Host:So that was an interesting panel. I listened to it a couple of times and I would imagine, I guess it's safe to say there was a universal agreement that the recovery is going to be gradual at best. After COVID-19 with your perspective from working in city hall and having that local political experience, how do you see this playing out where really the rubber meets the road? You know, you're talking about metropolitan transit agencies, you're talking about, you know, people get trying to get to and from work. How do you think COVID-19 is going to impact cities? David Zipper :That's a big question. And there's lots of different ways to answer it. And frankly, the answers are going to be different based on the, the nature of a transit agency versus a county government or a city government. But I can certainly maybe I can offer some, some overall thoughts up front and we can go into whatever detail that you like. But but yeah, in the short term you've seen transit agencies and local governments and state governments really just scrambling to keep the lights on as it were. Adjusting transit routes. Sometimes bringing up capital projects to do, to go faster because there's fewer people on the roads and there's fewer people flying at airports. So you can do airport expansions all faster. There's fewer trains running. So you might be able to more easily do capital projects. David Zipper:But that's really like a, a sort of a short term band-aid because the money's running out fast. We're already just, just today, actually, as we're recording this, there's been news about a $20 billion plus budget gap over the next couple of years in New York City's MTA, that's going to have to get closed. And the biggest transit agencies are feeling the pain first because they are really using their farebox revenue. The fairs that we all pay when we take transit they've used what they, that they collected yesterday to pay today's operating expenses. And in the big cities, that's a big chunk of their revenue, transit revenue. Transit ridership has fallen through the floor because people are uncomfortable on transit, even though it's the data suggests it's relatively safe, as long as people wear masks, but you've already seen, for example, in San Francisco, Muni, the transit service, there is consolidated routes really in a huge way, Caltrain in the Bay area, its future is up in the air there's discussion of whether to do a new tax to save it. David Zipper :And the transit agencies are going to feel the pain a little bit later because most of their revenue comes from state and federal governments that, you know, their budget is already allocated for this year, before the coronavirus hit. But there'll be a rolling impact there. And then for, for, for states and cities to, to you know, state the obvious they can't print money, they have to meet their, their - they have to make their budgets align so they can have a deficit. So what that means is that you're seeing some projects postponed, you're seeing layoffs and the Cares Act at the federal level. It gave a bit of a lifeline a few months ago when the coronavirus first hit there's discussion. Like again, as we're recording this there's discussions on Capitol Hill about a new federal investment program, it's unclear if that's going to have money for states, cities, deities, and for transit agencies, if it doesn't, I expect we're going to see pretty intense contractions and layoffs and pull back on capital projects and all of those levels. Host:It's been in my experience, you know, formerly on Capitol Hill and, and, and, and just watching this from time to time with all the surface bills that kind of come on, you always have that partisan divide when it comes down to the usual argument is that, you know, Republicans want to have the move towards devolution, but it was always that argument that, okay, we're going to Republicans would fight against Democrats who wanted to have bike trails or greenways or things of that nature, rails to trails, things like that. And then the Republicans were always going to fight against transit because they just wanted to make sure that that highway trust fund was kind of boxed in for roads. Host:Given the fact that we're in this new environment now, we're, it seems the federal government is more willing to provide aid, to deal with, to soften the blow for COVID-19. Do you think that any of those old entrenched arguments might shift, just because of the willingness to put money on the table to actually create assistance programs, do you think this might be an opportunity to break the paradigm and potentially have that money going to, you know, state and local transit agencies more freely? David Zipper :I wish I could say yes. I can't because there's a, I think unfortunately the you know, we used to say decades ago that transportation is a nonpartisan issue is simply not true anymore. The, the there's a professor at UC Santa Barbara named Clayton Nall. He wrote a book called the Road to Inequality. And in which he writes about how in the last 50 years transportation funding and particular transit funding has become remarkably partisan. David Zipper :Even to the point that if you live in a Democratic area, like say the Bay area or the New York area, even if you never take transit, you're more likely to vote in favor of referendums, referenda in favor of transit than, than any those who who'd be elsewhere, that doesn't apply in other parts of the country. So transit has become a democratic issue, which to me is unfortunate because frankly, the more people who are riding transit, the less congested roads are including those roads that are being used by some exerbs and suburbanites who are more likely to be Republican. So I would love to, to hear to, for your hypothesis to be held, to be the whole true. But from everything I've seen, like, for example, with the Cares Act you know, Schumer and the Senate and its allies had to hold out longer to be able to get a few billion dollars more for transit, it seems like it was done despite Republican opposition, as opposed to a sort of like heralding, a new breakthrough, which I wish it would on a nonpartisan bias. Host:That's something that was kind of brought up a little bit on the panel, but it wasn't really delve deep really more, more than just a couple of questions and just comments on it. But the push pull between of course, the large metropolitan areas in, on the coasts and your larger cities in the interior, but then you have those swaths of, let's say, you know, like I said, exurban or rural areas, how do you think the funding's going to be effected for projects in those smaller cities or, or areas between the two coasts? David Zipper :Well, a lot of it, right, it's going to depend on, on one, what happened to the budgets of state DOTs, and that's what, that's what those small cities and rural areas are really relying on. And this is a point that was made by Jeff Davis on the, on the panel. David Zipper :You know, even if there is stimulus money from the federal government is provided with a very generous match for highway projects for small towns. And for rural areas would say, I don't know, four to one federal match or whatever it is. There's still a one in five, 1 dollar of every five has to be put up by the local and state governments that at a time when income taxes are collapsing and tax revenue from hotels and restaurants, it's just drying up. It's not clear the extent to which States and local governments can even meet very modest matches. So if I were an official at a, in a small city or small town or a rural county, that's what I would really be worried about is to say, look, if I get a generous program with a low match, can I even meet that? I may just be grants. Yeah. Host:And that, that kind of goes into the segway to the idea of the integrated mobility or the mobility as a, and where the private sector might be able to in some way, step in. I mean, it's the few - Consumer Technology Association and CES. I've been out to a couple of their shows and seen kind of the idea of, you know, mobility as a service. The idea that you know, you might be able to have - deleverage maybe transit. And so in some way where you can actually then have vehicles, which are not so much owned, but private shared vehicles or some kind of autonomous systems, some, some cities are starting to try to get pilot programs on the road already for autonomous buses and things of that nature, which are private public partnerships. That's all nascent a little, you know, it's not fully developed. Where do you think the opportunity is for some of these technology companies that are, that are focused on mobility, and that's a big change. I mean, just the change between transportation to the concept of mobility is not so much what you own or what you have, but how do you get from point a to point B? Host:Do you think It's an opportunity for the private sector kind of enter and, and treat this as a, as a business opportunity? David Zipper :Maybe, maybe I wrote an article in Slate two months ago that noted how truly unusual this moment is, and that you know, ordinarily, there's a lot of research that shows it takes a lot to get you or me or anybody to change how they travel. We're creatures of habit when it comes to commuting, right? We have a given route we take to get to go to work or to the grocery store, to the gym or to the school. And if we're biking or if we're taking a bus, or if we're driving, we're probably going to stick to that. It takes a lot to get us to change. Just inviting you to change or me to change is probably not going to do much. David Zipper :It's really hard. What does get people to change and individual change is if you have a shock, like a like you have a new child born, and your habits have you have to move around, or let's change, maybe you change where you live, you move where you get a new job. That's an individual shock though, or a household shock. What we're undergoing now because of COVID is a society wide shock where everybody is rethinking how they travel, because they may not be going to work anymore at all. And they, if they took public transit, they may not be comfortable doing that. Now they may not be comfortable at being in ride hail the way they used to. There's lots of trips, millions of trips up for grabs in terms of how, what the new mode might be. And frankly, this is sort of a rationale for the cities to quickly put up bike lanes and, and new infrastructure that it can, can encourage people to not default to driving, which can feel like the safest route. David Zipper :It's just not sustainable at scale for cities. So the question becomes to get to your point of like, what's the role of the private sector in this? I would say that there is potentially a role for private sector actors, whether it's operators like scooter companies to step in and be able to provide, for example, a lower priced options for the short term, or maybe monthly rentals, which companies like Spin and I believe Lime have moved toward providing now as sort of a product that fits the market right now to encourage people who are not going to be, who might otherwise default to driving, to take another mode. That's more environmentally friendly, it takes up less space. And then you get into mobility as a service, which for those who aren't familiar, I would assume that everyone knows about MOS. Maybe I should define it really quick, because I don't know if all of our listeners are engaged in that. I Know some of the larger players in the engineering space are, but... David Zipper :Yeah, it's still a new field. It's a lot of people are excited about it and transportation planning and policy and technology, but it's still in its early days. The idea behind mobility as a service is to say that if we can sort of take all of these various options to get around a city for those who don't drive and knit all those options together. So you've got transit in there and scooters and ride hail and car share and bike share, and whatever else, put them all on one platform that MOS platform, it lets people choose how to get from point a to point B on all of those collective options and purchase their ticket, or a ticket that's a combination of modes on that platform. You can actually take away some of the friction, the annoyance factor of having to jump between apps and figure out which is the best service to get you from point A to point B. David Zipper :This is a need, MOS advocates claim, that really didn't exist 20 years ago when we had a very sort of fixed number for decades, really of a number of ways to get around town. You walk, bike, taxi, drive transit, but now we've got these other new modes and MOS can make a little bit simpler to navigate. So, and there's a bunch of companies that provide this now, like City Mapper and transit and so forth. And so on Google Maps, you could argue as a MOS provider in some ways. So the, the role of MOS in this particular moment that we're in is potentially a powerful one because lots of people are again, figuring out how to travel because they're breaking their old habits about how to get from point A to point B and MOS platforms can inform those decisions. David Zipper :And perhaps if the government gets involved, especially could nudge some of those decisions to be, to be resulting in a trip that's other than driving and potentially other than transit, cause people are just uneasy with it right now, for reasons that are in a lot of ways. Understandable. So is this a moment for MOS? Maybe? I would argue that these platforms are really reliant on the underlying quality and comfort of the services that they knit together. So you need to be able to provide comfortable biking and scooter lanes in a city to make people consider those options. You need to be able to provide reliable transit, to get people, to consider that which is, you know, sometimes a problem in American cities. But I do think this is a moment where MOS could be an interesting area of exploration Host:Or at least an area a time where federal policymakers can start looking at this and integrating it into, you know, long-term, you know, policy that, cause I know that, you know, Uber for example, was, was very active on the Hill talking about their fully integrated model where it's, you know, it was the combination when, you know, Uber taxi was kind of first coming out and they were talking about, we'll take an Uber to they're there, I guess, hanger or whatever they're going to consider, you know, get on an Uber taxi that will fly you to the next facility where you can go and take an Uber for your final destination. And you know, that kind of a kind of integrated, you know, closed loop system. David Zipper :Yeah, I mean, that's a little that's going to suit Uber's needs. I'm not sure cities are going to be that excited about everybody jumping into helicopters. Host:Exactly. David Zipper :I think that the high speed rail argument of saying, okay, you can take a high speed rail route to, let's say Washington DC to New York, but after you get off the train, then what? David Zipper :Correct. Host:It's how do you, how do you connect a route and how do you connect that high speed rail line termination to all the different options you can get to get to your final destination without having to get a car or, or, or reliant on one form of transportation over another. David Zipper :Yeah, I think the idea is if you're choosing between driving, flying or taking the train wouldn't it be nice if you could basically with one tap, be able to purchase your train ticket and know that there will be a, just for example, a Lyft car waiting for you because that, that car was summoned knowing that your train is running seven minutes late and it's pulling up just two minutes after the train gets into the station and you're, you've got a seamless sort of transfer from the train to ride hail onto your destination. That's the idea behind MOS, that's an inner city vision of MOS. Usually to be honest, MOS advocates are thinking more about travel within the city. So maybe the argument there would be, you know, I want to go to the place in Fairfax County, I'm in DC and to get to Fairfax County, Virginia, I need to do a combination of transit to ride hail or transit to scooter. David Zipper :And I can in one fell swoop purchase, determine my route, purchase the ticket and know that I'll have a seamless transfer when I get, when I pop out of the Metro station in Fairfax. Host:And then again, you know, a lot of this has been on the tech side because of developing the technology to allow that seamless integration of different mobility solutions. But on the engineering side, the people who are designing the infrastructure to actually enable this to happen. And that's really, you know, our core constituency from an engineer's perspective. What do you think the top, what do you think maybe a few of the, the main things that they should be looking at, or they should be paying attention to? If, they see opportunity to, you know, design the infrastructure to support systems like this. David Zipper :Yeah, I'll mention a couple of things. You know, one is the, again, the topic I wrote about a month ago I feel like there's a lot of people live in cities who suddenly have a new appreciation for their sidewalks, you know, as we're all stuck at home, trying to get exercise, to avoid going stir crazy. You realize that a lot of our urban neighborhoods have terrible sidewalks and some don't have any at all, especially in the South and the West. And I I think we've got, there's a good chance and I frankly, am hopeful that there is going to be a window of opportunity to consider sidewalk products - and sidewalk infrastructure is real infrastructure. It's less expensive than building a tunnel, but for those of your the engineers that are members of the organization that are trying to think of how can I really tap into what public leaders are thinking about now, if you can incorporate high quality wide, well lit, accessible sidewalks into your proposals for renovating a given district or into a new project. David Zipper :I think that this is a time when that's going to be thought of a little bit more directly and more constructively. I think that that also these new bike lanes and, and that are being developed, I don't see them going away. I frankly think that's also opened the door to considerations of some new technologies that will also have infrastructure needs. And I'll give one example that I'm really interested in, which is, which is parcel delivery. There's an argument that the coronavirus is a great catalyst or an accelerator of trends that are already underway. I think everybody knows that people are buying more stuff online than we used to. Now it's even more stuff than we did a few months ago. And there's been moments of sort of bullishness for sidewalk drones. I personally think that's going to take a while. David Zipper :Partly because our sidewalks think like we were talking about earlier, but the other option is is something I am actually kind of bullish on, which is e-cargo bikes, or electric cargo bikes, which for those of the audience who've been to Europe, they're widespread in Germany and other European countries. And they could be, they can utilize the existing infrastructure in cities. And most of it, at least the city of Boston is, but not an RFI today. July 21st, I think is today's date to basically invite suggestions from the private sector about what sort of infrastructure upgrades might be necessary in terms of depots to collect parcels and various neighborhoods as distribution nodes, things like that. And I, this is an area where I'm bullish in cities for the next five years. I think cities are gonna recognize that they can reduce congestion, improve neighborhood quality of life and, and utilization of existing infrastructure. David Zipper :If they shift some of these UPS, DHL, USPS trucks that they take up space and double park and can be pollutants instead utilize E cargo bikes, Europeans can do it. And I think we can too. And a lot of our cities. Host:Those are really two good points. He and I, and I, it's always kind of sad when I see a drone and Fairfax or one of the, you know, robot parcel delivery or package delivery drones get caught up on a stump or something on the, on the sidewalk and Fairfax city. It's kind of sad. David Zipper :But it happened. There was a viral video and Friendship Heights, one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in Washington over the weekend where you see the sidewalk drone got stuck because the sidewalk got too narrow. And I myself tweeted about him saying, because the guy who saw I was like, Oh, this I helped a little guy. David Zipper:It's kind of cute. I'm like this, isn't cute. If it's a person in a wheelchair, like we've really blown it with our urban sidewalks. And this should be a moment when we should be really investing in them. That's a very good point. Host:Well, David, I do appreciate you coming on the show. There's a lot to talk about here. I'd love to have you back on the show so we can talk about really these mobility issues when it comes to, you know, the interconnection of technology and mobility, how it all kind of ties together. You know, it's something that we'd like to explore a little bit more. Because I think our members are always looking for what, you know, what is the next thing what's going to be the next area that we might be able to invest in. And I think that, that these issues are going to be top of mind. Host:And yeah, and I do appreciate your time. And you mentioned that article. I mean, what else do you have coming out? Where should people be looking for the the article that you're writing now? David Zipper :Yeah, I'm actually, I've got a couple articles coming out in the next week or two. I write a lot about new forms of urban mobility and new technologies, and also about sort of the interplay between local policy, especially around transportation and automobiles and transit. So, so those who are in, if you're interested, you can always reach me on Twitter. I post all my articles there people can send me DMs. If they've got a question it's easy, it's a zipper, just my name at David Zipper. And then for my articles I actually have a website where I put them together. Cause I do write across a number of platforms and that's just as easy again www.davidzipper.com and you can find all the articles there. And I even have a little newsletter. I put out once a month with the stuff I've been writing and thinking about in these topics, because especially in the current environment, so much is changing so quickly. So I appreciate the opportunity to come join you and talk about some of these changes. Host:It was great to have you on and again, follow David and David's zipper and look out for his upcoming pieces. And we'd love to have you back on. So David have a great rest of the week stay as cool as possible when this heat wave and stay healthy. David Zipper:I'll go for a socially distance bike ride. Host:There you go. There you go. David Zipper :Thanks a lot. It's great to be here. Host:And you've been listening to Engineering Influence brought to you by ACEC.

A Swiss psychologist named Carl Gustav Jung coined the word “synchronicity” to describe the experience of events that are apparently casually unrelated, yet occur together in a meaningful manner. Synchronistic events reveal an underlying pattern, a conceptual framework that encompasses, but is larger than any of the systems that display the synchronicity. Following discussions with both Albert Einstein and Wolfgang Pauli, Carl Jung believed that there were parallels between synchronicity and aspects of relativity theory and quantum mechanics. Synchronicity is perceived as being a law of attraction in a higher-dimensional space, but is actually caused by convergence in the lower-dimensional reference system.” · This machine, based on resonances from my blood type, my name, where I was born, and the hospital I was born in revealed that I need healing with friends, healing, and integrating shadow cells… And really revealed some personal stuff that has been going on in my life over the past couple years. Booked Morning Podcast

We are all born with gifts and a purpose in life; we are all here to make an impact and a difference in the world. But very often, we lack the confidence, commitment, and the drive to apply ourselves. We question our abilities in life and feel we are just living day by day without any purpose. We need to realize that we have inside us the potential to change the world and touch the lives of those around us. This takes self-mastery, which will allow us to take control of our lives and live up to our full potential, shape our destiny and achieve everything we’ve ever wanted. This is a very special book review for me, as Tony Robbins really touched my life years ago, when I took his course Personal Power, when I was 15 years old. I graduated HS younger than most, and my mom was a single mom and did not have the finances to support my college education. So I started going to college full time and had to work a full time job plus 2 part time so that I could be able help my mom out and go to college. It was a struggle as my classes would often end at 11 and I had to be at work the next morning and take the bus to Downtown LA because I did not yet drive at the time. One late night as I was studying, I had the TV in the background and saw an infomercial by Tony Robbins and I was intrigued by the stories of success that he help touch. So I took the plunge and used by Debit Card with my last money to buy his program. That was the day that changed my life and set me on a journey and help me find my inner power to start my own business in my bed room, failed, started another one, and failed again, and continued getting back up because of the lessons I learned from him and putting my mindset in a position to learn from my mistakes and get back up. I eventually graduated and received Highest Honors and started a full-time job while building my company on the side. So reading this book today, which is pretty hefty at over 500 pages, seems like a summary of all the books I have done in this podcast over the last 47 previous episodes. I have 2 special books lined up for Episode 49 and culmination with Episode 50 which I am very excited to share with you. The lessons in this book has helped me commit my time, even with my busy life with a demanding career and 3 kids with the support of my beautiful and amazing wife. This podcast is a passion project for me, and is my way to be able to inspire others to find their inner power and Awaken their Giant Within. So let's dive into my four main takeaways from this amazing book by Tony. Allow me to leave you with this. We need to understand, that one small decision or change in the way we behave can have a dramatic effect on how we live our life and impact others. To become the person we really want to be in life, we have within us the power to make the change, we just have to recognize our own power. So decide what we want, take the necessary actions to achieve the desire, figure out what isn’t working and change our approach until our desires come to fruition.

Abstract 1:Real-time logic (RTL) is useful for the verification of a safety assertion with respect to the specification of a real-time system. Since the satisfiability problem for RTL is undecidable, the systematic debugging of a real-time system appears impossible. With RTL, each propositional formula corresponds to a verification condition. The number of truth assignments of a propositional formula can help us determine the specific constraints which should be added or modified to derive the expected solutions. This talk describes this debugging approach and how it can be embedded into autonomous systems. We have implemented a tool called ADRTL for automatic debugging of RTL specifications. The confidence of our approach is high as we have effectively evaluated ADRTL on several existing industrial applications, including the NASA X-38 Crew Return Vehicle avionics.Abstract 2:Embedded systems are becoming ubiquitous and are increasingly interconnected or networked, making them more vulnerable to security attacks. A large class of these systems such as SCADA and PCS has real-time and safety constraints. Therefore, in addition to satisfying these requirements, achieving system security emerges as a critical challenge to ensure that users can trust these embedded systems to perform correct operations. One objective in a secure system is to identify attacks by detecting anomalous system behaviors. This part of the talk describes the challenges in the design and implementation of such intrusion detection system (IDS), addressing (1) accuracy: the IDS identifies no or as few false positives as the resource (time, space, power, etc.) and/or policy constraints allow, and no or as few false negatives as the resource and/or policy constraints allow; (2) efficiency/timeliness: the IDS does not violate the host embedded system's application deadlines and has a reasonable space overhead; (3) scalability: the IDS can scale to work with large embedded systems; and (4) power-awareness: the IDS does not significantly reduce the operational period of battery-powered embedded systems. We conclude with an outline of one of several promising embedded IDS approaches under investigation. This approach is based on automatic rule-base generation and semantic analysis.
