So you live in one of the states that require some form of ID to vote. Everyone has one, right? In fact, there are lots of reasons someone might not have a valid ID. And getting one takes time, transportation, specific paperwork, availability during business hours, and of course, money. VoteRiders is a nonprofit organization that helps people get IDs in states where they need them to vote. On this episode we talk to Selene Gomez, VoteRiders' National Outreach Director, about why that work is so important.

At this week's Emily and Hannah spoke with Sarah Jakle, Founder and Executive Director of DemocraShe. Previously Sarah served as the Get Out The Vote Director for the California National Organization for Women and National Outreach Director for Field Team 6, leading the innovative effort to register voters using effective issue-based voter registration techniques. Empowering women to hold political office has been a focus since Sarah first interned at the Women's Council of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee in college. Prior to creating DemocraShe, Sarah practiced as a social worker in Los Angeles, helping adults coping with mental illnesses, addiction, and homelessness. She is a current Fellow with Obama's Organizing For Action and serves on the Board of Directors for Urban Partners Los Angeles. She discussed her journey in civic engagement from being a social worker through becoming an activist to feeling the need to create DemocraShe for intersectional women stepping into roles of democracy. A large part of why Sarah created DemocraShe was to build skills into early women's leadership training in response to what she saw happening to women candidates in 2018 and 2020 who were stepping up to try to serve their country yet were brutally attacked and all the more across any intersectional identity. She recognized the need to help women build skills to manage our nervous systems and deal with both the imposter syndrome that can lead us to count ourselves out AND the pushback that comes when we step up to lead. Sarah explained DemocraShe's curriculum and what it entails, specifically zooming in on the power of incorporating resiliency and political skills for high school students. Getting civically engaged can been difficult for young people and we discussed each of our journeys and how our experiences have been to date, backlash and all. We ended the episode by discussing two concrete skills that we can immediately draw upon in our lives: our practices with Grounding and our Inner Best Friend. The youth are truly leading the climate discussion. From Fridays for Future, that's led by Greta Thunberg to The Sunrise Movement, a youth-led political action organization focused on stopping climate change. It's no doubt that Gen Z is fully invested in taking action in the fight against climate change. As a tired millennial, it's truly inspiring to see such vigor in today's youth as they challenge politicians and corporations, holding them accountable for the harm that they've done to the planet. And in addition to that, Gen Z has also made great strides in bringing awareness to environmental and social injustices that have been tolerated for way too long. In this episode, we're chatting with a college student who is inspiring her generation to get involved in climate action. Today's featured sustainable brown girl is Anya Sastry, a climate activist, filmmaker, and student. She produced a documentary titled Frontliners that highlights environmental injustice from the perspective of the less privileged. Anya is also the National Outreach Director for the US Youth Climate Strike and a contributor to the book United We Are Unstoppable: 60 Inspiring Young People Saving Our World by Akshat Rathi. In this episode, we talk about: - Anya's role as National Outreach Director for the US Youth Climate Strike - How young people can get involved with climate justice work - Anya's film, Frontliners. and its exploration of the impacts of environmental injustice on marginalized communities Watch Frontliners: http://anyasastry.com/frontliners/ Follow Anya on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/anyasastry/ Watch this video interview on YouTube: https://youtu.be/P_EwuyNxwaE Donate to Sustainable Brown Girl on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/sustainablebrowngirl Visit the Sustainable Brown Girl Website: https://www.sustainablebrowngirl.com/ Follow Sustainable Brown Girl on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sustainablebrowngirl/ Please leave a review on Apple Podcasts!

How can a powerful organization deepen its impact? For the National Resources Defense Council, our planet’s protector and champion of clear air and water, it starts with looking inward. At a time of national reckoning with structural inequity, NRDC is reevaluating its own practices through a lens of race, equity and justice. As Angela Manso, National Outreach Director, explains, this is challenging and vital work. Communities of color are harmed at disproportionate rates by contamination, pollution and climate change. And that is why she is forging partnerships within the most deeply impacted communities. These relationships, with groups advocating for better housing, access to health care and against environmental degradation, are key to creating a next-level environmental movement. NRDC’s president, Gina McCarthy, who led the Environmental Protection Administration under President Obama, is committed to building an explicitly anti-racist organization. Angela, also an Obama appointee, is advancing the mission by creating a place for all communities to have a voice in the environmental policy making that affects their homes, health and futures.

They also discussed the misperception that China is still a major polluter and whether state central planning has played a role in China's successes in addressing both COVID and climate change issues. In the second hour, the hosts spoke with Dr Bill Honigman about the seemingly vacuous ‘digital' campaign strategy for key states needed for Joe Biden to win the 2020 election. They also discussed whether Democrats are doing enough to win over voters, or if they're instead attempting to coerce voters into casting their votes for Biden. In the last hour, the hosts spoke with Garland Nixon about the failures on the part of the Democrats to be more effective in the implementation of the political strategies. They also discussed how Donald Trump was never a top priority for the Democrats: beating Bernie Sanders was always job one.

GUESTS Mark Sleboda - International Relations & Security Analyst | China Policy Jacqueline Luqman - Political Analyst | Media Coverage of Black Lives MatterDr. Bill Honigman - Emergency Room Physician, Progressive Healthcare Activist and National Outreach Director at Progressive Democrats of America.org | Single Payer and Democratic PlatformIn the first hour, Jamal's monologue dealt with rejecting the Democrats for what he sees as an inevitable capitulation to Republicans on their COVID-19 stimulus bill. Then Shane and Jamarl were joined by geopolitical analyst Mark Sleboda, who discussed China and pointed out that the United States and other foreign nations' investments helped set up China's economic success for decades by using cheap labor in China. They also discussed the conflict in the South China Sea and pointed out that the United States wants to be able to deploy land based ballistic missiles to prepare for a Naval conflict, which is pushing the United States to withdraw from short term ballistic treaties. Mark said that there is censorship in American media that does not present anything but the establishment foreign policy views on China, Russia, Iran, and other counties. In the second hour, Shane and Jamarl were joined by Jacqueline Luqman, who expressed her view that media coverage of the Black Lives Matter movement is inaccurate, and she said that in a country where most of the media is controlled by six corporations tied to political parties, it is not a surprise that the media coverage is biased. She also pointed out what she sees as the hypocrisy of people calling the Black Lives Matter movement illegitimate for violence when other protest movements have done things that she believes are equivalent but have not been delegitimized, using the examples of the anti-mask protests and anti-quarantine protesters in Michigan. She also discussed what she sees as the impossibility of discussing race without discussing class. In the third hour, they were joined by Dr. Bill Honigman and discussed a recent move by Bernie Sanders delegates to withhold support for the Democratic platform unless it supports single payer healthcare or what they call Medicare for All. Bill said that Americans would be healthier and better able to handle crises such as COVID-19 with Medicare for All, but both the Democratic party and the Biden campaign are resisting what he sees as inevitable change. They also discussed whether progressives should always support the Democratic Party.

Reaching beyond the devastation and heartbreak, Tim used Nick’s death as the inspiration to spread hope, believing that if even one addict or family could be spared the horrors of addiction, he would make a difference. As a result, he founded A Man in Recovery Foundation, a nonprofit that helps anyone find treatment and recovery.Today, Tim is the subject of the new A&E documentary, Dope Man, reaching millions. He has been a featured thought leader in numerous national media, including USA Today, Newsweek, Chicago Tribune, and “The Steve Harvey Show with Dr. Drew,” and dozens of nationally syndicated radio shows. He was an invited guest to the 2016 State of the Union Address. He is the author of the bestselling book, From Dope to Hope and the National Outreach Director for Transformations Drug and Alcohol Treatment Center.Tim’s message is inspiring because he has walked the journey of addiction and recovery. He spreads hope and tools to those who need them most."If you're going to do heroin you have two choices, you will get sober or you're going to die. You might pass through jail in the interim, but those are your only two choices. End of discussion." - Tim RyanVisit http://www.AMIRF.orgA Man in Recovery Foundation: 1-844-611-HOPE[Book] From Dope to Hope: https://www.amazon.com/Dope-Hope-Man-Recovery-ebook/dp/B06Y1QY6ZB/Sponsored by:The Addictions Academy – The Nation’s Leading Accredited Addiction Treatment Services, Recovery/Sober Coaching & Intervention Training Academy: https://theaddictionsacademy.com/Hassle-Free Books - You have a message to share, it shouldn't be so difficult to get it out to the world.
