Allen, National Director of Partnerships for the National Parents Union, brings over 19 years of experience in education to the table. Through his work, Jason advocates for inclusive and supportive environments that uplift students, families, and communities. In our conversation, Jason sheds light on the stigma surrounding learning disabilities and shares his personal journey as both an educator and a student with exceptionalities. He emphasizes the importance of amplifying voices and fostering parent and family engagement in education. Jason highlights the need for dedicated educators who recognize issues and work towards practical solutions. We discuss the significance of community engagement and the role it plays in shaping school culture. Jason emphasizes the need for intentional partnerships and resources to support educators and empower students. Through his work with the National Parents Union, Jason advocates for informed decision-making and inclusive educational practices. Join us as we explore actionable strategies to create inclusive learning environments and empower black neurodivergent learners. From promoting family engagement to fostering community partnerships, this episode provides valuable insights to drive positive change in education.  Show Notes: [2:26] - There is a stigma associated with learning disabilities. [3:31] - Jason describes his own experience as an educator and having his own exceptionalities as a student. [5:37] - Just because we don't acknowledge something, doesn't mean it doesn't exist. We need to use our voices. [7:20] - Parent and family engagement is crucial. Jason shares how even at pre-planning, he was able to connect with families and better understand them. [9:29] - It takes dedicated educators to see the issues and present solutions. [10:50] - Many schools and school districts send surveys and gather reports and feedback from families. But where does that data go? [12:01] - If we are not grounded in family and community engagement standards, then we will continue to believe that the social and emotional development of children does not impact academic outcomes. [13:19] - Learning does not stop or end at school. It is ongoing. [15:31] - School culture needs to change. When black students enter a school, what do they see and is it reflected in the curriculum? [17:40] - Make the data real. [19:22] - How are we being intentional about making sure that students are present and know they belong? [20:31] - Education is power. [21:37] - Get connected with the people in the community who are doing the work. Partnership is key. [23:20] - It is challenging, but it's not impossible. [24:39] - When our teachers are not well, we have to be realistic about how impactful they are. [27:04] - We can't ask educators to do more if they don't have the resources in order to do the thing we're asking them to do. [30:52] - Jason is the National Director of Partnerships for the National Parents Union. [32:08] - In many communities, parents don't have the information in order to make decisions for their children. [35:05] - A lot of times, we bring our beliefs into what we do, but we need to be intentional and inclusive. [37:10] - We cannot be gatekeepers that prevent black students from the best education they can receive. [38:20] - Jason explains how to get connected with the National Parents Union and the free resources they offer. About Our Guest: Jason B. The mission of the Core Collaborative Learning Network is to expand learner ownership and agency through building a culture of belonging and efficacy through collaborative inquiry. The Core Collaborative defines “learner” as ALL the people in a system who partner with students. The Core Collaborative strives to cultivate learners who embody empathy, open-mindedness, patience and perseverance who use their energy and expertise to make a positive impact in the world we share with others. Dr. Bloomberg is the co-author of the best-selling book, Leading Impact Teams: Building a Culture of Efficacy, a lead author of Peer Power! Unite, Learn and Prosper: Activate an Assessment Revolution through Mimi and Todd Press and a lead author on The EmpowerED Learner eToolkit. Paul has led multiple, successful school turn-around efforts and believes that public education must play a major role in deconstructing systems of oppression. His new book, which we talk about in this episode, is called Amplify Learner Voice through Culturally Responsive and Sustaining Assessment. Paul served on the National Parents Union Board of Directors. The National Parents Union is a network of highly effective parent organizations and grassroots activists across the country that is united behind a set of common goals and principles to channel the power of parents. Paul lives with his husband, Tony, in California. Alex and Taylor, Tony and Paul's sons, are the inspiration for launching the Core Collaborative in 2014. Paul starts with the concept of systems. He talks about how some schools are thriving more than others and what we need to do to re-think formative assessment through a cultural lens. What You'll Find in this Podcast Episode with Paul Bloomberg Paul starts with a vital aspect of how all educators can effectively engage students, Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Education (CRSE). This is about changing what we do to meet students' needs through culturally responsive formative assessments. We dive into the conversation about assessments and the cross-section between traditional grading and equity. None of us can answer the question about why more schools aren't moving to more culturally responsive grading? There is power in interviewing students. Listen to what can shock teachers into creating a different type of learner-focused environment. Don't miss what Paul says about the textbook industry: “I can't do it anymore” applied to covering all the concepts that we're giving in our content areas. Paul mentions Dr. Allen Daly as his mentor. The social justice focus of his doctoral program left a mark that he uses in all of his work today. Paul talks about “active listening” and reflecting back what people are saying and feeling as a super-tool for leadership, for teaching, and for learning. Paul talked about wanting to learn how to be a restorative practitioner. His answer is heartfelt Reframe negative thinking Wake up and be optimistic Treat people with dignity T.J. mentions the wisdom from Tiny Habits by BJ Fogg that links to #1 above. He talks about The Science of Happiness Podcast as a learning and growth strategy for himself. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit Michigan this spring, causing nearly 2,000 new cases a day in early April, Bernita Bradley was ready. Bradley has worked as a parent advocate in her native Detroit for more than 10 years, helping connect both children and adults with educational opportunities. As Detroit schools announced its plans to transition to remote learning, Bradley saw an opportunity. With support from the National Parents Union, a Meet the Moment grant partner, Bradley launched Engaged Detroit, a homeschool co-op. Engaged Detroit also provides its homeschooling families with opportunities through partnerships like the Detroit College Access Network, which provides college and career pathway support and virtual college tours. The families regularly convene for African drum lessons, and occasionally the families go on educational trips, such as a recent tour of State Line Corp., the company that installs and maintains all the street lights in Detroit.

In this episode of Building the Bridge, Dr. Wendy Oliver interviews Keri Rodrigues, Founding President of the National Parents Union. Keri is referred to as “arguably the most successful parent organizer in education advocacy today.” Her outstanding commitment to social, economic and educational equity for children and families spans decades. Keri's journey as a parent advocate started when she observed that she and other parents didn't have a voice in their community regarding politics or policy in education. She organized with other parents and formed Massachusetts Parents United, which is now the largest parent advocacy organization, and discovered other pockets of parent power across the country. This ultimately led to establishing the National Parents Union. Tune in to hear Keri's perspective on online education and her thought about the actions parents can take to ensure their kids are getting the best education possible. About the host: Dr. Wendy Oliver is a highly qualified Tennessee teacher and administrator who has pioneered digital learning across multiple states and school districts. She has authored digital teaching standards and developed software that allows teachers to self-assess their knowledge of digital instruction. No matter which hat she's wearing, her goal is simple -- to empower learners. Dr. Oliver is currently the Chief Learning Officer for EdisonLearning.
