Part 4 shifts from merger talk into the part of grading nobody likes to say out loud. It starts with the “I've heard stories” framing, then draws a hard line between pre Nat Turner ownership and post Nat Turner, including the point that Collectors inherited liabilities and has paid out on mistakes from earlier eras. From there, the panel gets into why the hobby quietly benefits from inconsistency, even while asking for standardization. And then the episode drops the best real world illustration of the entire debate: a card that graded 5.5 on a Beckett raw card review, then later came back as a BGS 9.5. Same card, same grader ecosystem, wildly different outcome. Highlights in Part 4 include: The “I've heard stories” disclaimer and why some things get talked around, not stated Pre Turner vs post Turner: inherited liability, payouts, and where blame actually belongs The uncomfortable truth: if grading was consistent, resubmissions would collapse Is there a tipping point where collectors stop paying for the slab number and start paying for the card The “record sale” culture and why nobody flexes a record low Big money entering the hobby and the moment investors realize how the sausage is made The raw card review story: 5.5 to 9.5, and what that says about grading as a product The ethics question: if you sell a card that jumped grades, what do you owe the buyer Reholder without regrade: should a card be reassessed every time it passes through the facility Old standards vs new standards: should an older PSA 7 stay a 7 even if it would grade lower today The health inspector analogy that nails the point: same item, changed condition, unchanged label Buyer beware vs “protect the hobby”: how those two ideas collide in the content era The practical takeaway: advanced collectors hunt lower grades with stronger eye appeal, not the other way around Part 4 is basically the grading debate in its purest form: what people say they want, what they actually reward, and what happens when reality shows up. Nat Turner, leader of the deadliest slave rebellion in U.S. history, was captured on 30th October, 1831. For over two months, he'd hidden out in the woods of Virginia, having led a violent uprising that terrified white Southerners and electrified the enslaved population. When finally caught, by farmer Benjamin Phipps, Turner was armed only with a sword and a few branches. Born into slavery in 1800, Turner was marked from birth - literally - with mysterious symbols on his chest that his family interpreted as a sign from God. A prodigious reader and deeply religious, he became known as a preacher, believing he was divinely chosen to free his people. In the early hours of August 22, he and his accomplices started their killing spree by murdering Turner's master, Joseph Travis, and his family. They then moved swiftly across Southampton County, recruiting others and attacking slaveholders. Their plan was to reach the county seat of Jerusalem, seize weapons, and spark a full-scale revolution. By the rebellion's end, about 60 white people were dead, but so were over 120 Black people, many of them innocent victims of revenge killings by militias and vigilantes. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly uncover the manhunt for Turner and the brief trial before he was hanged; reveal how white lawmakers responded to events with ever-harsher laws prohibiting the movements of enslaved people; and consider Turner's complex legacy… CONTENT WARNING: descriptions of extreme violence, racist violence, racism, mutilation. Community crossfire with Chris McGill & Josh Adams. Joe signs off and we sprint through 70+ starred comments: Is PSA's upcharge model fair capitalism or a predatory practice? Would a flat-fee grading tier solve the rage (and reduce cheap slabs)? Who actually benefits from the PSA guarantee—and why doesn't the submitter get it? We dig into Nat Turner's pre-ownership take vs today, authenticity vs condition guarantees, and the collector vs flipper divide. Jeremy also shares a real $6,000 guarantee payout story—and the designer-clothes analogy for why slabs drive value even though the card hasn't changed. Highlights Flat-fee grading idea: demand control, less plastic, fewer low-value slabs Free market lens vs “predatory” framing—who's choosing to pay? Guarantee realities: per-card and lifetime caps, submitter exclusion “Buy the card, not the slab” vs registry/set-building culture Do changing standards make old grades obsolete? By the time he was a teenager, Antonio Mays Jr. knew all about the struggle for civil rights and Black liberation. The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Nat Turner, the Watts riots — Mays' dad taught him the stories because he wanted his son to know his history, the history of being Black in America. In 2020, 16-year-old Antonio watched the next chapter of that history begin to unfold from his home near Los Angeles. The murder of George Floyd on May 25 had sparked what would become the largest sustained protest movement in American history. So Antonio left a note telling his father he was going to make him proud, that he was going to accomplish something. And he left home for Seattle, a place he'd never been, a city where he had no known connections.

In August 1831, a group of enslaved people in Southampton County, Virginia, rose up to fight for their freedom. They attacked the plantations on which their enslavers lived and attempted to march on the county seat of Jerusalem, from which they planned to launch an uprising across the South. After the rebellion was suppressed, well over a hundred people, Black and white, lay dead or were hanged. As news of the revolt spread, it became apparent that it was the idea of a single man: Nat Turner. An enslaved preacher, he was as enigmatic as he was brilliant. He was also something more—a prophet, one who claimed to have received visions from the Spirit urging him to act. Nat Turner, Black Prophet: A Visionary History (FSG, 2024) is the fullest recounting to date of Turner's uprising, and the first that refuses to tame or overlook his divine visions. Instead, it takes those visions seriously, tracing their emergence from the world of nineteenth-century Methodism, with its revivals, camp meetings, interracial churches, and Black preachers. The rebellion and its aftermath would hasten the end of this world, as Southern states further restricted the personal freedoms of the enslaved, even as the ongoing threat of revolt shaped the country's politics. With this work of narrative history, the late historian Anthony E. Kaye and his collaborator Gregory P. Downs have given us a new understanding of one of the nineteenth century's most decisive events. Nat Turner, Black Prophet was named a Times Literary Supplement Book of the Year and one of Literary Hub's 50 Best Nonfiction Books of the Year. In our last episode, Episode 399, we discussed Denmark Vesey's revolt and the way biblical texts and scripture enabled Vesey to organize what would have been the largest slave revolt in United States history if the revolt had not been thwarted before Vesey could put it into action. Early American history is filled with revolts against enslavers that were thwarted and never made it past the planning stage. But, one uprising that did move beyond planning and into action was the Southampton Rebellion or Nat Turner's Revolt in August 1831. In this BFW Revisited episode, Episode 133, which was released in May 2017, we met with Patrick Breen, an Associate Professor of History at Providence College. Patrick joined us to investigate Nat Turner's Revolt with details from his book The Land Shall Be Deluged in Blood: A New History of the Nat Turner Revolt. Denmark Vesey's failed revolt in 1822 could have been the largest insurrection of enslaved people against their enslavers in United States history. Not only was Vesey's plan large in scale, but Charleston officials arrested well over one hundred rumored participants. Jeremy Schipper, a Professor in the departments for the Study or Religion and Near and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Toronto and the author of Denmark Vesey's Bible: The Thwarted Revolt that Put Scripture and Slavery on Trial, joins us to investigate Vesey's planned rebellion and the different ways Vesey used the Bible and biblical texts to justify his revolt and the violence it would have wrought. On August 22 1831, Nat Turner led a group of enslaved people in a rebellion that resulted in the deaths of more than a hundred people, Black and white, in Virginia's Southampton County, near the border with North Carolina. Though the conflict only lasted a few days, Nat himself evaded capture for two months, until he surrendered on October 30. Before his execution on November 11, he spoke at length about his thoughts and deeds, which were written down by the lawyer Thomas Gray as The Confessions of Nat Turner. In a new book, the late historian Anthony E. Kaye and his collaborator Gregory P. Downs make the case that the religious dimension of Nat's uprising has been underplayed or overlooked in popular accounts of his work—despite the prevalence of divine vision both in the Confessions and in prior rebellions. Nat Turner, Black Prophet aims to tell the full story of this “uniquely troublesome historical figure, too dangerous for some, too strange for others.”Go beyond the episode:Nat Turner, Black Prophet: A Visionary History by Anthony E. North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson is dangerous for America's Left. An undeniably black, Christian conservative with the same energy and working-class appeal as President Donald Trump is the Democrats' and mainstream media's worst nightmare. How do we know? Because both the liberal establishment and their propagandist media have already begun the attacks, giving Robinson the Trump treatment. With a primary win on Super Tuesday, Robinson seems to be on his way to claiming the governor's seat in Raleigh and Jason believes perhaps the White House in 2028. “Mark Robinson could be Harriet Tubman, he could be Nat Turner. He could be the one that frees the slaves from the Democrat Plantation.” T.J. Moe and Shemeka Michelle join “Fearless” to discuss the political battle ahead for Robinson and what Jason says is the one thing that could hold him back from becoming president. In our daily dose of Stephen A. Smith, we share the details of the recent verbal tussle between our favorite mythmaker and his ESPN colleague Pat McAfee, and we read between the lies of Dan Le Batard to get to the bottom of his praise and defense of SAS. Plus, Jason recently visited with our friends at T.Rex Arms. We take you behind the scenes of one of America's greatest firearms industry facilities as Jason gets strapped and educated.
