Jeff Yorzyk has over 20 years of experience in sustainability across a broad range of sectors, and has held leadership roles in both commercial and consulting companies spanning program development, strategic management systems, product sustainability and life cycle assessment. Based in Berlin, Germany, HelloFresh is the leading meal kit provider in the world, operating in 14 markets. As director of sustainability for HelloFresh US, Jeff oversees packaging lifecycle management, operational and supply chain sustainability and regulatory compliance and permitting. Jeff also has participated in building the profession of sustainability, leading sustainability nonprofits such as the International Society of Sustainability Professionals (ISSP) in the development of the first professional credential for sustainability practitioners, and strategic partnering with GBCI for its independent delivery. Jeff Joins Sustainable Nation to Discuss: How HelloFresh addresses packaging impacts Life cycle emissions of HelloFresh compare to restaurant or supermarket trips Addressing food waste in production Advice and recommendations for sustainability professionals Jeff's Final Five Questions Responses: What is one piece of advice you would give other sustainability professionals that might help them in their careers?  I have two here. Number one is be ready to do anything, get dirty. In my own professional journey, I found that if I took the tasks or the projects that people didn't want to do because they looked boring or hard or just not exciting to people, they led me to some of the most exciting work that I ever did. So sometimes something that looks boring or just kind of a grind at the beginning actually turns into something really incredible. Never be afraid to take those things and, in fact, seek them out. Number two is keep a journal and ask yourself if you're making the impact you want through your career. It's a really broad field, and that's a good question to be asking ourselves regularly. I started my career in environmental consulting in the 1990s. That's really what we had available to us. We didn't have this thing called sustainability, but as I moved forward in my career, I noticed this thing called sustainability evolving and really was able to direct myself into it. So pay attention, keep a journal, and then take the jobs that people don't want because they don't have to be dirty jobs. Those things will usually lead you to some of your greatest successes.  What are you most excited about right now in the world of sustainability?  In a word, it's mainstream. To put a little more color behind that, we're in a fascinating period right now where companies are being asked to make ambitious goals, and they're also being really held accountable to achieve them. We've moved beyond this period of lofty goals and even, to some extent, talking about moonshots. I think for some of us in the field that has been a little bit confusing because the moonshot was this inspiring thing that we were looking to gather people around, and I think there's still room for that. But we're being held accountable as companies to have realistic plans underneath them and to convince people that they're achievable. These high expectations are coming together with these enhanced greenwashing laws to really create this interesting space for companies. I know this has created side effects like what they call green hushing and companies talking less about what they're doing, but I think it's pushing us in the right direction for us to really be a lot more realistic, but still quite ambitious.  What is one book you'd recommend sustainability leaders read?  I'm currently reading a book called the Customer is the Planet. It's quite new and really it has a nice mapping of environmental and social issues against the European ESRs standards. Anything that makes the European ESRs easier to digest and actually put in my brain is welcome to me. If you haven't read Natural Capitalism or The Natural Step or even Our Stolen Future, which are books from a previous century, they're fantastic and they're really great foundational reading.  What are some of your favorite resources or tools that really help you in your work?  I got my MBA in 2002 and that was my pivot from environmental consulting into sustainability. Right about that time, this guy named Joel Makower was starting up this website called GreenBiz. It's now called Trellis. They pivoted into a really network based approach. That has always been one of the key sources that I turn to. That newsletter has been very useful for me to observe things. You watch these things over time, you start to see trends, patterns, you see how things transform. It's really been a fantastic resource. Then LinkedIn. It took me a while to get the algorithm working for me, but it feeds a lot of really good content to me these days. I highly recommend both of those.  Where can our listeners go to learn more about you and the work being done at HelloFresh?  The HelloFresh website has a sustainability section. You can also go to our Instagram site @hellofresh. They really are great at putting some fun videos and reels in there and TikTok. They've done a great job, it actually gets quite funny. Then of course you can find me on LinkedIn under Jeff Yorzyk.

“You as a consumer, I as a consumer have enormous power to make the transformation that we want to see.  But one of the transformations as a consumer is selecting the right products because the competitor who is not doing the right packaging or the right product is going to see that they're losing clients to the competitors that are doing more sustainable product, produce and materials, so he's gonna change. He's only going to change because us as consumers are driving the change by purchasing the right or the best materials available for us.”  - Denise Braun Denise Braun found her calling for sustainability work after witnessing waste flooding during a storm as a child in Brazil. She was further inspired after reading a book on applying sustainability in businesses while working in human resources. This led her to pursue a career in waste management. Denise founded All About Waste 8 years ago after having a child, encouraged by her husband to start her own business focused solely on zero waste solutions. The firm now provides zero waste certifications and consulting globally to reduce building waste. She leads by example with zero waste practices like composting and using refillable products. She encourages others gently and hosts zero waste children's birthday parties. She also recommends shopping at farmers markets when possible or using services like Imperfect Produce. She also suggests stores like Sprouts for bulk options. In Europe, she noticed less waste from smaller grocery formats and buying daily needs. Her goal is advising political leaders on waste policy. Can many small players create the same value in a place that the big guys do? This week's guests will tell you that the former simply isn't sustainable, and not only is the latter, but it also creates more lasting value for the community. Monte Anderson and Mike Keen are working in two different places (South Dallas and South Bend, Indiana). Still, they are working to create incremental wealth in the communities where they live, and as you will hear, both of them have been successful at this bottom-up approach to development. The discussion on this week's podcast covers topics like financing these small projects and how imperative it is that common sense and effective land use entitlements are to the success of these small, locally-led projects.About Mike KeenMike Keen is a Managing Partner with Hometowne Development LLC, and President of The Bakery Group LLC.  A LEED-AP with two decades experience as a sustainability professional, he spent 30 years as a professor of sociology and sustainability studies at Indiana University South Bend.   As Managing Partner of Hometowne Development for the last six years, Mike has taken the lead role in the development of Portage Midtown, a sustainable neighborhood demonstration infill project located in South Bend, Indiana.  He is also the facilitator of the Michiana Town Makers ecosystem, an informal network of small scale developers, design professionals, finance officers, real estate agents, property managers, contractors, neighbors, and municipal officials dedicated to helping to create wealth in neighborhoods for neighborhoods. A social entrepreneur, Mike is trained in The Natural Step's Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development.  He offers seminars, workshops and consulting services to developers, municipalities, and not-for-profits wishing integrate sustainability and/or incremental development into their localities.About Monte AndersonSince 1984, Monte has been improving the living and working environments in Texas' southern Dallas and northern Ellis counties. In today's episode I'm going to bring us back to an aspect of strengthening community that I first began to explore in this series with David Holmgren and Charles Marhon. Back then we looked deeply into how suburbs and towns can work at a foundational level to regenerate their communities through civic planning and collaboration through each level of local government.  In today's episode I spoke to Sarah James, the co-author of the book The Natural Step for Communities which provides inspiring examples of communities that have made dramatic changes toward sustainability, and explains how others can emulate their success. Sarah is the principal of a city and town planning consulting firm specializing in participatory planning methods. She co-authored the American Planning Association's Planning for Sustainability Policy guide, and has published articles and given workshops throughout the United States. In this interview Sarah breaks down the natural step framework designed to guide change makers through the process of coordinating positive change through many different aspects of their community. She recounts the inspiration she found in the eco municipalities in Sweden that she visited and the examples that prove that sustainable towns are possible.  We also navigate the obstacles that you're likely to face in the change making process as well as strategies that have been shown to work. We also go into the mindset of successful sustainability leaders, advice for aspiring change makers, some of Sarah's own learnings while teaching these steps, and much more.  If you've been following along since the beginning of the series you'll undoubtedly be picking up on many recurring patterns in the advice and success examples from many of the interviews, and this session with Sarah is a wonderful reinforcement of these important learnings.

Aired Tuesday, 27 November 2018, 5:00 PM ESTThe Eisenhower Moment – Part IThe Great Transition To A Life-Affirming CultureAn Interview with Andrew Gaines, Founder of The Great Transition Initiative“Either we will have an awakening or we will have a wake.” — Swami BeyondanandaIn these times of great crisis and opportunity, there’s an idea that has gotten ahold of me that I call “The Eisenhower Moment”. Nearly 60 years ago, President Dwight D. Eisenhower said, “I think that people want peace so much that one of these days governments had better get out of the way and let them have it.”As more and more of us are coming to understand, “peace” means more than an absence of war — although that would be a terrific beginning. Peace means the end of domination, one over the other. It means fundamentally adopting and applying the Golden Rule. And more apparently than ever before, it means living in harmony with the natural world. As the crises — ecological, economic, political, social and spiritual — seem to all be arising at once, maybe we are at that moment where a critical mass of the heretofore uncritical masses can speak in one coherent voice and say, “We want THIS.”Certainly we have the means to communicate ideas and memes instantly across the globe, and nearly two thirds of the humans on the planet have a cell phone or personal device. That means that “humanity” can be mobilized around an idea or issue almost instantly…Would it make a difference?Perhaps it’s the only thing that will. Our guest this week, Andrew Gaines, an Australian visionary, activist and systems thinker has dedicated his life to bringing about such a “movement of movements.”He is a co-leader in the Great Transition Initiative – a citizen led educational movement to inspire mainstream commitment to transitioning to a life-affirming culture. Through a personal epiphany he became committed to the wellbeing of coming generations. Andrew recognizes that the long-term survival of humanity is in jeopardy, and he embraces the adage to change the system, change the thinking. As a Feldenkrais practitioner, psychotherapist and creativity trainer he is well-positioned to act on this adage. He sometimes says, “I help good brains work better.” His books include Kitchen Table Conversations, The Witness: Gateway to Self-Development, and Creative Conversations. He is trained in improvisational acting, Aikido, Tai Chi, and The Natural Step, a way of working out whether a business or a country is ecologically sustainable. He is a former naval officer with a degree in philosophy. One of the problems in addressing climate change — and other massive issues confronting our entire species — is that our tendency is to try to fix things around the edges, so that we can keep things “normal.” The problem is, that things are changing so rapidly that we cannot go backward to previous ideas of normal. We are being pulled forward into the unknown, like it or not. As Andrew points out, the climate crisis cannot be addressed, let alone resolved, by tweaking things around the edges. A systemic transformation is needed. So… how can that transformation come about — other than by utter collapse of the system as it is?How can the people of the world be mobilized, not just to rail in anger but to work together toward practical, breakthrough solutions? How do climate change educators break through the walls created by the two “drugs” of “hopium” (imagining things will just get better on their own) and “deniatol” (problem? what problem?) to mobilize our individual and collective creativity and focus? If you’re curious, tune in this Tuesday, November 27th at 2 pm PT / 5 pm ET : http://omtimes.com/iom/shows/wiki-politiki-radio-show/ to find out.Or, find us on the Wiki archives on Wednesday: http://wikipolitiki.com/archives/To find out more about The Great Transition Initiative, please go here: http://www.inspiringtransition.net/about-gtiSupport Wiki Politiki — A Clear Voice In The “Bewilderness”If you LOVE what you hear, and appreciate the mission of Wiki Politiki, “put your money where your mouse is” … Join the “upwising” — join the conversation, and become a Wiki Politiki supporter: http://wikipolitiki.com/join-the-upwising/Make a contribution in any amount via PayPal (https://tinyurl.com/y8fe9dks)Go ahead, PATRONIZE me! O.penVape, a company specializing in the sales of THC oil vaporizers, has grown 1600% each of their four years since forming in 2011. Moreover, with the emergence of new Medical Marijuana States and the full legalization of THC concentrates, it is likely to accelerate this market’s growth. With Vapor Slide’s signature design, we will become the first of its kind in this exploding market. Imagine hundreds of earth conscious communities networked across our nation by goodwill (and fiber optics) being embedded in both the rural sector and urban environments, that have their own currency, of both Green Dollars and Time Banks. These all linked by localised computer networks (but also without computers) that if you are short of NZ hard currency you can still earn, trade and be innovative business people and entrepreneurs. Where volunteers actually get paid, and there is no lack or want.Starting from a background in organic gardens, permaculture, and community projects over the past 25 years, Laurence has sought key levers for change. In the early to mid 90’s he founded the Environmental Business Network drawing more than 500 companies into its membership under his leadership, (the network later became the Sustainable Business Network). In this time he worked with people like Anita Roddick of The Body Shop and Dr Karl Hendrik Robert founder of The Natural Step. Advocating community solutions led to Transition Towns and Living Economies -as movements. In conjunction with AnewNZ he runs 'The Bank of Real Solutions' a clearing house of community success stories which runs the by-line, ‘Out-thinking the problems because we can.’He believes our barriers to a sustainable future are not from a lack of ability but from systemic corruption and cowardice, but most of all – a lack of imagination. He lives in Golden Bay with his wife and 3 daughters and is enthusiastically involved with several community projectsIn the age of globalisation, community is the anecdote ... and 'possibility is the new currency'.
