Composed of essays, prose poems, and the occasional experiment, this memoir-in-fragments navigates sexual assault, a mother's arrest, a panic disorder diagnosis, a breakup, a stream of new lovers, a flirtation with stimulant drugs, and the ups and downs of trying to let it all go. As the collection grapples with memory's fragmentary nature, past and present collide on the page. And as Ludwick charts the difficulty of filling in the gaps, threads blending cultural critique, human anatomy, poetry, and personal narrative expose the strange acts historically forced on bodies, the estrangement one can experience from their body, and the strangeness that is felt when trying to find a way through all this chaos, through all this strange. Thanks for this wonderful conversation, Court! All the best! -- Arts Calling is produced by Jaime Alejandro (cruzfolio.com). The opening story of Eternal Summer of My Homeland (Epigram Book, 2023) the debut story collection from Singaporean author Agnes Chew, is about grief. Hui Shan loses her mother right before the birth of her first child–and gradually cuts her father out of her life after he refuses to do the traditional things one does to commemorate the death of a family member. Until she learns what her father has actually been doing: Growing a garden, illegally, on Singaporean government land. Agnes's stories are all about Singapore and its multiculturalism, tradition, and modernity. And, as she explains in today's interview, the collection is in fact Agnes's attempt to reconnect with the city, after moving away to Germany. Agnes Chew is also the author of The Desire for Elsewhere (Math Paper Press: 2016), a collection of travel essays. Her work has appeared in Granta, Necessary Fiction, and Wildness Journal, among others. She holds a Master's degree in international development from the London School of Economics; her prizewinning dissertation, which examines inequality and societal wellbeing in Singapore, was featured in the Singapore Policy Journal. This is a series of conversations with writers exploring what's informed their books and their lives around themes of movement, memory, sense of place, borders, identity, belonging and home.In this edition, I speak with the writer Preti Taneja to discuss her book, AFTERMATH, which has just been published. It's a work of fragmented non-fiction, of life after the terrorist attack at Fishmongers' Hall in London in 2019. Preti knew one the victims of the attack and the perpetrator of the crime.Preti is also the author of WE THAT ARE YOUNG, which won the 2018 Desmond Elliot Prize for debut novelists. The story — set in contemporary India — holds parallels with Shakespeare's King Lear; it's a dynamic and devastating story of greed and corruption. Please consider supporting your local bookshop. The Wandering Book Collector would like to thank the supporters of this podcast:Abercrombie & Kent — Creating unique, meticulously planned journeys into hard-to-reach wildernesses and cultures.TUMI — Creating world-class business, travel and performance luxury essentials.Ultimate Library — Creating bespoke book collections to educate and inspire. If you're enjoying the podcast, I'd love you to leave a rating or a review. Giacomo joins David to talk about his recent article on the re-discovery of Roman baths in Britain, and how one image - mistakenly thought to be ancient Roman when it was centuries younger - led antiquarians studying Roman baths down the wrong path for years.  He also talks about the recently published book 'Roman Leicester', which he contributed to as not only an author, but illustrator as well, and how engaging with your creative side can help understand the ancient world better.  Finally, Giacomo reminisces about how visiting his grandmother as child led him got him into archaeology, including how he can still remember the taste of the stones (that's not a typo). Hoopty Time Machines: fairy tales for grown ups (Atticus Books) Who Knew Godzilla Had a Poetic Side? Hoopty Time Machines. It’s fun to say, isn’t it? Fanciful. Downright playful. Go ahead, try it. Say it out loud. Let it tumble off your tongue: “Hoopty Time Machines.” Just mouthing the words takes you to another time, a time when everything still seems possible, a time when you can stay up late with a flashlight under your sheets and disappear into the adventures of a good book. Christopher DeWan’s Hoopty Time Machines: fairy tales for grown ups is a permission slip to adventure, an escape from the staid, workaday world, a passport to wistful, fabulist places, each one filled with peculiar dreams and wild awakenings. The stories include fairy tale heroines, introspective superheroes, and a whole menagerie of myths and monsters, but at their heart, each one is deeply human, and at least a little bit heartbreaking. DeWan’s debut collection is “one of the most anticipated small press books of 2016” (John Madera, Big Other) and is coming in September from Atticus Books. Praise for Hoopty Time Machines:“Funny, sharp, playful zingers of stories that reach right out to grab a reader."– Aimee Bender, author of The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake "Hoopty Time Machines is much like a bag of M&M's, in that it's nearly impossible, once you've opened it, not to consume it down to the last morsel, and fast. It is less like a bag of M&M's in that you never know what you'll find beneath the candy coating: a peanut or an amphetamine, a rosary bead or a thumbtack."– Kevin Brockmeier, author of The Illumination "Reading the book is like staring into a spiderwebbed mirror, the perfect vessel by which to understand our fractured, absurdist world. There are hints of Barthelme, Vonnegut, and Calvino to be found here, but make no mistake: DeWan is something gloriously new."– Nathan Ballingrud, author of North American Lake Monsters "An absolute delight from the first page to the last: it's like that scene in Singin' in the Rain, only with ideas instead of puddles."– Ben Loory, author of Stories for Nighttime and Some for the Day “That rare story collection that is both a total blast to read and a complete philosophical package. These abrupt, funny, vigorous stories—involving urban legends, minotaurs, little mermaids, chupacabras, and changelings—contain in their brevity vast depth and import. These are stories to read, reread, and perennially enjoy."– Sharma Shields, author of The Sasquatch Hunter's Almanac Christopher DeWan has published more than forty short stories in journals including Hobart, Necessary Fiction, Passages North, and wigleaf. His collection of domestic fabulism, Hoopty Time Machines, is one of the "most anticipated small press books of 2016." Christopher has had TV projects with the Chernin Group and Indomitable Entertainment and collaborated on transmedia properties for Bad Robot, Paramount, Universal, and the Walt Disney Company. His screenwriting has been recognized by CineStory, Final Draft, the PAGE Awards, and Slamdance, and he is recipient of a fellowship from the International Screenwriters' Association (ISA). He teaches with Writing Workshops Los Angeles and the California State Summer School for the Arts, where he is currently chair of creative writing.

Colin Marshall talks to Steve Himmer, editor of the webjournal Necessary Fiction and author of the novel The Bee-Loud Glade, wherein an eccentric millionaire named Crane picks Finch, a former corporate blogger, out of a rapidly deepening post-firing squalor. Finch finds himself in a very particular future on Crane's intricately landscaped grounds: employed as a decorative hermit, he must do little more than eat, sleep, meditate, and accomplish occasional (if sometimes inexplicable) Crane-assigned tasks. As it turns out, this suit's Finch's sensibilities just fine, even when Crane's corporate empire begins to crumble.
