One of the major problems of computational chemistry is the ab initio prediction of energies and properties of molecules. The electronic Schrödinger equations provides the in-principle solution, but because of intrinsic difficulties associated with the singular and long-ranged Coulomb interaction, this remains an extremely challenging task numerically. Here we outline a formalism called transcorrelation which provides a route out of the difficulties, whilst itself creating new problems (which have stumped the community for decades). We outline our work of the past few years in tackling these new problems, and show that the formalism has the potential to transform our ability to solve the Schrödinger problem in a general manner. In particular, by eliminating the Coulomb singularities, we show we can achieve both basis-set converged results, as well as thermodynamic limit results, with far fewer resources and less sophisticated many-body theories. Prospects to extend this methodology in the context of quantum computing will also be mentioned.

Jeanne Hardebeck, U.S. Geological Survey Aftershock triggering is commonly attributed to static Coulomb stress changes from the mainshock. A Coulomb stress increase encourages aftershocks in some areas, while in other areas termed “stress shadows” a decrease in Coulomb stress suppresses earthquake occurrence. While the predicted earthquake rate decrease is rarely seen, lower aftershock rates are observed in the stress shadows compared to stress increase regions. However, the question remains why some aftershocks occur in the stress shadows. I examine three hypotheses: (1) Aftershocks appear in shadows because of inaccuracy in the computed stress change. (2) Aftershocks in the shadows occur on faults with different orientations than the model receiver faults, and these unexpected fault orientations experience increased Coulomb stress. (3) Aftershocks in the shadows are triggered by other physical processes, specifically dynamic stress changes. For the 2016 Kumamoto, Japan, and 2019 Ridgecrest, California, sequences, the first two hypotheses seem unlikely. Over many realizations of the stress calculations with different modeling inputs, numerous aftershocks consistently show negative static Coulomb stress changes both on the model receiver faults and the individual event focal mechanisms. Hypothesis 3 appears more likely, as the spatial and temporal distribution of aftershocks in the stress shadows are consistent with the expectations of dynamic triggering: the aftershocks occur mainly in a burst over the first few days to weeks, and decay with distance like near-field body waves. The time series of dynamic stress can be modeled, and numerous metrics explored, such as the maximum dynamic Coulomb stress change, and the period and duration of the stressing. Determining which metrics correspond to aftershock occurrence in the stress shadows may be useful in discriminating between various proposed physical mechanisms of dynamic stress triggering.

This week's EYE ON NPI will make you say "Yeee-haww", to the buckin'-and-boostin' bronco known as the Richtek RT6160A Buck-Boost Converter with I²C Interface (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/r/richtek/rt6160a-buck-boost-converter). The RT6160A is a high-efficiency, single-inductor, synchronous buck-boost converter that can provide up to 3 Amps of current to a dynamically-configurable voltage from 2.025V to 5.2V. With an amazing 2uA quiescent current, this chip lets you add an advanced power supply for the price of an LDO that will let you design with the smallest possible battery. We're big fans of Richtek for low quiescent power supply chips - our favorite 3.3V LDO is the RT9080-33 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/richtek-usa-inc/RT9080-33GJ5/6161634) which can provide up to 600mA with a 0.5V dropout, and a really nice 4uA quiescent current. This is great for deep-sleep wireless projects where you've got a chip with ultra-low power snooze modes, like the ESP32 - we were able to get down to 10.5 uA in deep sleep thanks to the RT9080! (https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-itsybitsy-esp32/low-power-use). Compare that to the AP2112K which we used to use, has a quiescent current of 55uA. However, the RT9080 is a LDO fixed at 3.3V@600mA - and of course, LDOs have that dropout which translates to power lost. If you want to sip every last Coulomb out of the battery on hand, you'll need a DC/DC converter. Usually we see a buck converter - since you are converting from a Lithium Polymer battery, you'll have 3.7V nominal, 4.2V peak voltage and maybe you'll buck that down to 3V. If you want to really get the best possible range of performance, you can go with a buck boost (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buck%E2%80%93boost_converter). That way you can buck down from 3.4-4.2V and then as the battery starts drooping, the chip switches into a boost mode to cover the 2.7V~3.2V range. The RT6160A is a Buck-Boost converter that seems well designed for battery-powered projects, with an input and output range of about 2 to 5V. The default output is 3.3V and you can 'select' between two voltages by toggling a GPIO pin. This makes it easy to adjust the desired voltage and then swap from 'high' to 'low' voltages without an I2C command. Why would you want two voltages? Well, you could use 3.3V or greater for when you want the best performance from a radio, then drop down to 2.5V when the radio isn't on and you want to reduce both the conversion current and also reduce your chip quiescent current: most microcontrollers will use lower current at lower voltages since they are not pushing around as much current onto the internal logic FETs. Combine this with a microcontroller's dynamic clock frequency configuration and you've got a simple system to squeeze more current out of your battery. And usually you have to 'spend' a lot of current to run the DC/DC converter, but this chip has an amazing 2uA quiescent current - lower than most LDOs we've used, and amazing for an up-to-3A output device. If you want to have the lowest quiescent, highest-flexibility power management chip in your next design, the Richtek RT6160A Buck-Boost Converter with I²C Interface (https://www.digikey.com/short/hv7fm4nt) is an excellent choice: Richtek really know their power supplies and they keep it nice and simple so you can get to integration instantly. Best of all, DigiKey has the RT6160A (https://www.digikey.com/short/hv7fm4nt) in stock right now, for immediate shipment, and $1.32 by the reel! All you need is some ceramic caps and an inductor. For fast testing in your application, there are also some EVB_RT6160AWSC (https://www.digikey.com/short/0p80hqvj) eval boards in stock. Los dos grupos históricos, nacidos en los años 70, compartieron espacios musicales y apuesta por la recuperación de la tradición musical gallega pero es ahora cuando, por primera vez, colaboran en una canción. "Barqueiros de Ribadavia" forma parte de una serie de temas que el grupo Fuxan vos Ventos editará a lo largo de los próximos meses. Algunas de ellas forman parte de la exposición “Fuxan vos Ventos. 50 años de historia” que conmemora medio siglo de vida del grupo lucense. LUAR NA LUBRE consiguió lo que parecía imposible hace 37 años: erigirse como la banda más internacional del folk gallego, además de una referencia mundial en la música celta. Continuamos con sus conciertos próximos: 28 octubre: PAMPLONA 2 noviembre: ZAMORA 2 diciembre: GIJON 9 diciembre: TOLEDO El Naán celebra el estreno del videoclip ‘Cuando el ruido regrese' que la formación palentina ha grabado junto a la banda madrileña Vetusta Morla en Tabanera del Cerrato con apenas 70 habitantes, en pleno corazón de la España vaciada, y en otras localizaciones y pueblos de la comarca palentina del Cerrato. La Gravetat de Coulomb presenta el disco "L'efecte Doppler", y un nuevo espectáculo pensado para hacer bailar a los más bailadores y hacer disfrutar de la buena música aquellos que prefieran escuchárselo tranquilamente. El disco, que se publicará el 2 de octubre, quiere ser un homenaje a los géneros más típicos de los Bailes de gitanas de la zona del Vallès y el Maresme (comarcas de Barcelona). Et les retombées sur notre sol. Les propos de Jean-Luc Mélenchon, rétif à qualifier le Hamas de terroriste, illustre bien une autre forme de prise d'otage, électoraliste, par ce vote musulman dont LFI espère qu'il le porte un jour au pouvoir.

Ryley Hill, San Diego State University Both natural and anthropogenic hydrologic loads have been associated with stimulating seismicity. However, there are few documented examples that hydrologic loads can trigger large earthquakes. The southern San Andreas Fault (SSAF) in Southern California lies next to the Salton Sea, a successor of ancient Lake Cahuilla that periodically filled and desiccated over the past millennium. Here we use new geologic and paleoseismic data to demonstrate that the past six major earthquakes on the SSAF likely occurred during highstands of Lake Cahuilla. To investigate possible causal relationships, we computed time-dependent Coulomb stress changes produced by lake level fluctuations over the last ~1100 years. Using a fully coupled model of a poroelastic crust overlying a viscoelastic mantle, we find that hydrologic loads increased Coulomb stress on the SSAF by several hundred kilopascals and fault-stressing rates by more than a factor of 2, likely sufficient for triggering. Stress perturbations are dominated by pore pressure changes, but are enhanced by the poroelastic “memory" effect whereby increases in pore pressure due to previous lake high stands do not completely vanish by diffusion and constructively interfere with the undrained response in subsequent high stands. The destabilizing effects of lake inundation are enhanced by a nonvertical fault dip, the presence of a fault damage zone, and lateral pore pressure diffusion. Our model provides physical insights into relations between lake level and time-dependent seismic hazard, and may be applicable to other regions with hydrologic loading from either natural or anthropogenic sources.

Leo got his Ph.D. in Mesoscopic Physics at Delft. He was a postdoc researcher at the University of California at Berkeley and a visiting professor at Harvard. Highlights in Leo's career include the discovery of conductance quantization in quantum point contacts, Coulomb blockade in quantum dots, artificial atoms, the Kondo effect in quantum dots, Spin qubits, induced superconductivity in nanowires and nanotubes, spin-orbit qubits in nanowires and nanotubes and Majoranas in nanowires. Leo and his group found evidence of Majoranas detailed in a paper from 2012. He lead the Microsoft hardware R&D effort, working on topological qubits using Majorana zero modes from 2016 to 2022. Pour elles, « le message est très clair: le gouvernement doit renoncer » au report de l'âge légal de départ à la retraite » de 62 à 64 ans et à « l'accélération » de l'allongement à 43 ans de la durée de cotisation. Faut-il accélérer la relance du nucléaire ? – les faits : Le Sénat, majoritairement favorable à une relance de l'énergie nucléaire, a élargi mardi 17 janvier en première lecture, la portée du projet de loi visant à simplifier les procédures administratives pour favoriser la construction de nouveaux réacteurs. Quel financement pour l'audiovisuel public à l'avenir ? – les faits : Quelques mois après la fin de la redevance, l'Etat a accordé 3,8 milliards d'euros à l'audiovisuel public, dont 2,4 milliards à France Télévisions, 623 millions à Radio France et 285 millions à France Médias Monde (le groupe tourné vers l'international, qui réunit France 24 et RFI). Pour compenser la suppression l'été dernier de la redevance, cette somme est désormais prélevée sur la TVA. Un mécanisme censé être transitoire, jusqu'à fin 2024, mais qui pourrait durer. Pour 2023, l'Etat accorde 3,8 milliards d'euros à l'audiovisuel public, dont 2,4 milliards à France Télévisions, 623 millions à Radio France et 285 millions à France Médias Monde Faut-il déboulonner la statue de la Vierge de La Flotte-en-Ré ? – les faits : La cour administrative d'appel de Bordeaux a ordonné à la commune de La Flotte-en-Ré, sur l'île de Ré, le déplacement hors du domaine public d'une statue de la Vierge située au milieu d'un carrefour, en vertu de la loi de séparation de l'Eglise et de l'Etat de 1905, dans une décision rendue vendredi 13 janvier. Confirmant une première décision du tribunal administratif de Poitiers, en mars dernier, elle a par ailleurs enjoint cette commune de Charente-Maritime de 2.800 habitants de « procéder à son enlèvement dans un délai de six mois », dans un communiqué de presse.

Interplanetary medium monitoring with LISA: lessons from LISA Pathfinder by A. Cesarini et al. on Monday 26 September The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) of the European Space Agency (ESA) will be the first low-frequency gravitational-wave observatory orbiting the Sun at 1 AU. The LISA Pathfinder (LPF) mission, aiming at testing of the instruments to be located on board the LISA spacecraft (S/C), hosted, among the others, fluxgate magnetometers and a particle detector as parts of a diagnostics subsystem. These instruments allowed us for the estimate of the magnetic and Coulomb spurious forces acting on the test masses that constitute the mirrors of the interferometer. With these instruments we also had the possibility to study the galactic cosmic-ray short term-term variations as a function of the particle energy and the associated interplanetary disturbances. Platform magnetometers and particle detectors will be also placed on board each LISA S/C. This work reports about an empirical method that allowed us to disentangle the interplanetary and onboard-generated components of the magnetic field by using the LPF magnetometer measurements. Moreover, we estimate the number and fluence of solar energetic particle events expected to be observed with the ESA Next Generation Radiation Monitor during the mission lifetime. An additional cosmic-ray detector, similar to that designed for LPF, in combination with magnetometers, would permit to observe the evolution of recurrent and non-recurrent galactic cosmic-ray variations and associated increases of the interplanetary magnetic field at the transit of high-speed solar wind streams and interplanetary counterparts of coronal mass ejections. On Quantum and Classical Treatments of Radiative Recombination by Barabanov A. L. et al. on Thursday 15 September The quantum-mechanical solution to the problem of radiative recombination of an electron in a Coulomb field, obtained in the approximation of the smallness of the electron coupling with the radiation field, has been known for a long time. However, in astrophysics, the classical approach, which does not explicitly use this smallness, is sometimes used to describe similar processes in systems of magnetic monopoles or self-interacting dark matter particles. The importance of such problems is determined by the fact that recombination processes play a crucial role in the evolution of the large-scale structure of the Universe. Therefore, of particular interest is the fact that the classical and quantum expressions for the recombination cross section differ significantly in magnitude. It is shown that the applicability of quantum and classical approaches to radiative recombination is closely related to the radiated angular momentum and its quantization. For situations where the classical approach is not suitable, a semi-classical approach based on the angular momentum quantization is proposed, in some respects an alternative to the well-known semi-classical Kramers' approach. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2204.10860v2

Aquest diumenge s'ha omplert al gimnàs de la Plana Sant Martí de Prada per l'homenatge al músic conflentí Maties Mazarico, Aquest esdeveniment era organitzat pel Casal del Conflent en el marc dels actes de la 53a renovació de la Flama de la Llengua. Al Concert Homenatge hi han participat cantadors i sonadors vinguts d'arreu dels Països Catalans: Jaume Arnella, Vicent Torrent, Biel Majoral, els grups Corrandes són Corrandes i la Gravetat de Coulomb, el xeremier Martorell així com alumnes i professors del conservatori de Perpinyà.

Aquest diumenge és la 53a renovació de la Flama de la llengua a Prada, amb l'acte tradicional de l'encesa de la flama a la tomba del mestre Pompeu Fabra el matí. L'acte estrella de la jornada és el concert excepcional de cantautors i sonadors en homenatge al músic folklorista Maties Mazarico. Actuaran artistes de tots els Països Catalans: Jaume Arnella, Biel Majoral, Vicent Torrent, els alumnes del conservatori de Perpinyà, de Calaix, la Gravetat de Coulomb i Xeremier Martorell Actuaran a la «Halle des sports» de Prada a partir de les 3 de la tarda.
