It's Nick Holmes from the Byzantium and the Crusades podcast. Although I'm no longer making new episodes of this podcast, I thought you might be interested in my latest project which is a series of books as well as a new podcast on the Fall of the Roman Empire. And I'm contacting you because my latest book, and the fourth in my Roman series, called ‘Justinian's Empire', is out now on Amazon in ebook and paperback. It will be with other distributors later and also available in audiobook probably within the next six months. It's about the triumph and tragedy of the late Roman Emperor Justinian's reign. Triumph because Justinian's general, Belisarius, recovered North Africa and Italy from the barbarians. Justinian also created a new law code that would endure to this day. And he built extraordinary monuments, like the iconic Hagia Sophia in modern Istanbul, rivalling the great buildings of Ancient Rome. But all that glitters is not gold. There was also tragedy in his reign, especially with a mini ice-age that caused famine and bubonic plague. And I also suggest Justinian was a ruthless opportunist, and his western conquests drained the empire's wealth and critically weakened its army. So, rather than restoring Rome's greatness did he in fact pave the way for its catastrophic collapse less than a century after his death? I think the ebook is also really good value at only $4.99 in the US and £3.99 in the UK – probably cheaper than a cup of over-priced coffee! – and certainly cheaper than most other books on the Roman Empire. Paperback is obviously more expensive since I can't control the printing costs. The links to Amazon US and Amazon UK are in the notes to this and I do hope you'll take a look, and if you do buy it and you're feeling generous why not leave a review? I'd love to hear your feedback. Thanks for listening and I hope you continue to enjoy Byzantium and the Crusades! Please take a look at my website nickholmesauthor.com where you can download a free copy of The Byzantine World War, my book that describes the origins of the First Crusade.
We have Mark and Nick Holmes, the father & son duo of Bianco Profumo — a new Chicago-based fragrance brand that captures the Italian-Americana of the '80s and '90s. In their words: "We do it big. Our hair is perfectly spritzed into place, we speak ten decibels louder than everyone else, we're the life of every party, and we smell f**king terrific." Their debut launch of three scents immediately grabbed our attention (not hard with these scent profiles: a black cherry leather jacket, a ripe tomato garden, and the modern Cool Water of today) and from what we learn in this episode, this is just the beginning for Bianco Profumo. We discuss:the food at the Glossier Yous launch eventa restroom perfume recthe secret Tsu Lang Yor launch event at Stéle we attendedMugler Angel Fantasm — just as punchy as the original, plus piña coladaSable smells like DS & Durga Murder Mystery set Prof. Newton Hay + PRof. Formed in Halifax, West Yorkshire, UK, in 1988, Paradise Lost are considered to be among the pioneers of the death-doom genre and regarded as the main influence for the later gothic metal movement. Their line-up has remained stable for such a long-standing heavy metal band, consisting of singer Nick Holmes, guitarists Greg Mackintosh and Aaron Aedy, and bassist Steve Edmondson. On the back of two sold out shows in Ireland, Dolans of Limerick and The Academy, Dublin, Letty spoke to Aaron of the band before they played to a packed audience in Dublin. Aaron covered plenty of topics and it was a pleasure to have such a legend on our podcast. Today we are sitting down with Dena Spatz, PhD, David Miller, and Nick Holmes, PhD - the three leading scientists on the historic paper that was just released called, “The global contribution of invasive vertebrate eradication as a key island restoration tool”. In this massively important paper, these scientists synthesized over 100 years of invasive vertebrate eradications from islands and found that this type of intervention had an 88% success rate. Yes, an 88% success rate! It's rare that anything in conservation can give such a clear path forward. Dena, Dave, Nick and I chat about a wide range of topics including the history behind our islands' decline, what's all involved in island conservation interventions including eradications and restoration, how they created the novel database that's at the center of their historic paper, how to prevent future invasions from opportunistic species, and how we all can help save our islands. welcome to the error bar, where neuroscience meets uncertainty. the error bar is a podcast about brain science news, error, confusion, uncertainty, and controversy. it comes out at UK time Thursday evenings every 2 weeks. it's aimed at scientists, students, journalists, and the general public. my name's Dr Nick Holmes, I'm a brain scientist and lecturer at the University of Nottingham in the UK, working in the psychology department, studying touch and movement in adults and children. there are two kinds of episode in the podcast – news and discussion. [BONG] that's Big Ben – London's bell. he introduces every news story. the news episodes are 10 minute briefings on the most interesting brain science news stories in the previous two weeks. I scan the main UK newspapers, and some from the English-speaking world; I check medical databases for articles, and pick out stories of interest from my regular reading. the news episodes focus on freely-available articles that are likely of wider interest. each story is briefly summarised, reviewed, and fact-checked. I also cover neuroscience obituaries. [BONG] the discussion episodes are 30 minutes long. they focus on a single claim, topic, or controversy. I aim to interview two guests, one on each side of an argument or approach. and I'll give my own view at the end. so why should you listen to the error bar podcast? it's as short as I can make it – averaging only 1 minute per day. it takes a critical and occasionally-expert view of brain science news that you probably won't find in the media. and I try to be entertaining. you can follow on twitter @BarError, listen at theerrorbar.com, or subscribe with your favourite podcast app. the error bar is open, so pull up a chair and listen to our stories.

Nick Holmes, portfolio manager for the Tortoise Essential Assets Income fund, discusses how investing in water infrastructure is mostly lumped in with other infrastructure plays, which he considers a mistake, noting that water is viewed differently as an asset class around the world than it is in the United States. He explains why his fund gets involved in private investments, how it was hit harder than most closed-end funds during the market';s 2020 decline and why he thinks both the fund and water assets are poised for success moving forward.
