Riley Sheehan is in his first full year in the pro peloton. Last year as a stagiaire he lived every rider's dream - winning one of cycling's oldest classics, Paris-Tours. The result led to him being signed to a three year deal by Israel Premier Tech where he's followed up his strong first act with a solid performance in the spring classics. But Riley's route to the world tour was far from conventional, battling through the French amateur system, returning to the US and racing alongside former Sky man Sergio Henao on the criterium circuit before returning to Europe.. hopefully for good. April Pett is a breath of fresh air keeping the Frenchy vibes fluttering for many tourists in Paris. She hosts custom tours in Paris, Versailles, Chablis and Champagne and does so with such a lovely vibrant positivity!Coming to live in Paris from a small town in Canada, April first visited France when she graduated high school and her love affair with the French capital began. After more than a decade living there, she still hasn't lost the wonder in her eyes every time she sees the iconic symbols surrounding her. Wandering around the city is still like an outdoor gallery for her, as April says there is always something new to see or find even after daily walks down particular petites rues! Her main rule though, is to "always look up". So many people miss what is right in front of them by burying their heads in a map or phone, or only looking at ground level. Always look up!**Louise Prichard is the host of the Loulabelle's FrancoFiles podcast.**Other Loulabelle's links:FrancoFile Fix on YouTubeLoulabelle's FrancoFiles Spotify Playlist Loulabelle's FrancoFiles InstagramLoulabelle's FrancoFiles website
Norman Alvis is a Sacramento, California native. He started out as an athlete running cross country. At the same time he rode a bike to and from school. After riding a friends race bike he was smitten. He say it was the adventure, the sensation of being on the bike and having something of his own that drove him. He won his first race solo. He says he did very well from the beginning. 1981 he got his first look by the junior national team by having the teams coach spot him at a restaurant. He won the junior national time trial championship that year. After the 84 Olympic trials he was invited to the national team as an amateur. In 1987 Alvis won his first elite amateur national time trial championship. Then, in 1988 he made the Olympic team time trial team. A funny story he told me was his time racing the Tour of Morocco. If you get a chance ask him about the race. Eventually he turned pro for 7-Eleven and went to France. Alvis thanks Leonard Harvey Nitz for giving him Jim Ochowicz's number. His first race with the team was the La Jolla GP which he won. His time in Europe was productive and hard. He would race the Tour, the Giro several times, and classics such as Paris Tours, Giro di Lombardia to Liege-Bastogne - Liege while riding for 7-Eleven and Motorola. By the 1995 season he was back in the states racing for Saturn. He would win the U.S. Pro Championship the same year. In 1997 Alvis won the Australian Sun Tour. In 1998 he retired from pro racing. Upon retiring Alvis went to school and got a degree in finance and marketing. He also started a family raising six kids. Alvis still had the competitive drive so he started racing masters races. He continues to win and has one of the best Instagram pages called "Crit Master." What you may not know is that he has multiple attempts at the hour record. But he actually still holds the hour record on an outdoor track. Cool thing though, he's planning to try it again.
Spencer Martin of the Beyond the Peloton Newsletter & Andrew Vontz of the Choose the Hard Way Podcast sit down with recent Paris-Tours winner Riley Sheehan to discuss his breakout 2023 season, which saw him rise from a US-based criterium racer to winning a major professional European race. They also talk about his newly signed three-year deal with the Israel-Premier Tech team, how his life has changed over the last few months, and his goals for the 2024 season and beyond. Riley Sheehan is dope. This young man won Paris Tours 2023. I don't know if you're familiar with the race but it's 213.9 km long and starts in Chartres and ends in Tours. The 2023 version started with 157riders. Sheehan started the race as a stagiaire for Israel Premier Tech World Tour Team. He got a chance to join the team for a training camp at altitude in July. After that he joined the team to race starting August 1st. Sheehan got a general outline of the races he was going to do. Paris Tours was on the list. His first race with the team was the Maryland Classic. The day of Paris Tours Sheehan says he woke up read to go and super motivated. His role in the are was to help Tom Van Asbroeck and Giacomo Nizzolo to the gravel sections. He also had some freedom to get into a break which he did. At 2 km he realizes he's in the winning break. He says he had to really focus on what's next. He was confident in his sprint. No cramps. Sheehan says the final 50 meters he's freaking out. He says he was expecting someone to pass him but no did. So he posted up with his hands in the air. Sheehan says he finished his season at the Japan Cup. This interview was done once Sheehan finished his around the world trip to get back home and had a few days to relax and rest.
Henri Uhlig recently signed his first pro contract with Alpecin Deceuninck. For the past two years he's been riding for their development team. His season just ended after racing the famed Paris-Tours elite race. So, this interview takes place while he's on vacation. Uhlig told me he's not happy with the season he had. He feels there were way too many wins left on the table. His first race of the season was Gent Wevelgem U23. Uhlig says it was his best day on the bike. He got 3rd in that race. Uhlig got his first win at the Province Cycling Tour in July on stage 3. He followed that up with another win in the Baltic Chain Tour in August on stage 2. He also won the youth and points classifications in that race. Uhlig's dad was a racer. He says they held him back from racing but eventually got him a mountain bike and then road bike. His first coach was his dad. He was extremely successful as a junior and amateur. He joined the German National Team when he was a junior. He rode for the Rad-Net Rose Team before joining the Alpecin Deceuninck Devo team. Uhlig says he's always wanted to go pro and signing his contract is a dream come true. He says he's ready to get back to training for the new season.
Rouleur editor Edward Pickering is joined by photojournalist James Startt to discuss Il Lombardia and Paris-Tours, and their place in cycling's folklore, and follow up on the collapsed merger between Jumbo-Visma and Soudal-Quick Step. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
It may be autumn, the time of falling leaves and drifting woodsmoke, the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness, but there's still plenty of news and talking points in the pro peloton. These are RadioCycling's latest headlines...Intermarché-Wanty-Circus plunged into racism scandal – The Belgian team has pulled two of its riders from the Tour of Guangxi, the final WorldTour race of the season, after they posted a racist image on social media. We detail how the team and the UCI have responded to this furore and examine what it says about the riders involved and the state of the sport.Post-merger meltdown sends transfer market into a frenzy – The Jumbo-Visma/Soudal-QuickStep fusion is off, and, like the floodgates opening a dam, the transfer market is suddenly in full flow. We detail the main moves in recent days and explain why the merger blocked the transfer market and what it's meant for the many riders who are still out of contract for next season. The Tour de France heads for the white roads – Following a weekend dominated by racing on gravel at captivating editions of Paris-Tours and the UCI World Gravel Championships, the French press is reporting that the 2024 Tour de France will also be heading off-road, following the trail blazed by the Tour de France Femmes' peloton through Champagne's vineyards in 2022. We reveal the latest...It's big, it's bad, it's the Babadag – This is the climb unearthed by the organisers of the Tour of Turkey. The stats say is 50% tougher than the Angliru, while the riders who tackled it were unanimous in it being the hardest climb they'd ever raced up. We hear from Bora-Hansgrohe's Florian Lipowitz, who took 75 minutes to complete this monster 18km ascent that averages 10.5%, and was fourth to the top.

"In pro cycling there are about 2.5-to-3 unofficial Sprinters' World Championships annually at Scheldiprijs, of old Paris-Tours, and of course on the Champs-Elysees on the last stage of the Tour. There is that 100km Taiwan KOM Challenge that makes a good case to be the unofficial Hill Climb Worlds. Over the course of this podcast and others unofficial Raincoat World Championships have been highlighted. But today, it is time to discuss in depth, what has been the unofficial Descenders' World Championships since at least 1992 with Sean Kelly's archetypal descent to victory, down the Poggio at the end of Milano-Sanremo, the first Monument of the year."
"Compared to teenage but now premiere Strade Bianche and even the Cult Classic Tro Bro Leon, for some reason the end-of-season Paris-Tours gravel has yet to stupendously take off. Potentially this year's edition was a good showing for the French interior's gravel, but it was actually the race's finale that stole the show. "

This is the first ten minutes of an episode that's just been released for Friends of the Podcast called A Team Apart. It's a study of a team that punched above its weight last season, Team Sunweb. They won three Tour de France stages, Flèche Wallonne, Paris-Tours and nearly the Giro d'Italia too. A new sponsor DSM has perhaps given the team greater security, considering Sunweb is in the fragile holiday market, although the team lost its new star, Marc Hirschi on the eve of the season. This episode gets under the skin of how the team often shuns the conventional approach. To sign up as a Friend of the Podcast go to http://thecyclingpodcast.com/friends

There were races in Belgium, France and Italy, with Ghent-Wevelgem, Paris-Tours and the Giro d'Italia, and we have reaction to each of them in our latest episode. From Italy, we hear from Wilco Kelderman, who moved up to second overall at the Giro, and his Sunweb teammate Sam Oomen. We also have interviews with Larry Warbasse, who makes some pointed comments about Ruben Guerrero, the stage nine winner, and Guerrero's teammate, Lawson Craddock. We also speak to Joao Correia, who manages Gueirrero and the winners of both Paris-Tours and Ghent-Wevelgem, Casper Pedersen and Mads Pedersen, as well as the rider who held on to the pink jersey of overall leader at the Giro, Joao Almeida. The Cycling Podcast is supported by iwoca and Science in Sport

By society’s measures, Jackie Kai Ellis had an extremely successful life in her late-twenties; she was a designer, living with her husband in the beautiful city of Vancouver. Yet Jackie was struggling with depression and felt emptier than ever, trapped in a never-ending cycle of external validation. On today’s episode, Jackie shares the circumstances that led her to enroll in a Parisian patisserie school – an experience that restored joy for life and, most importantly, her sense of self. Jackie went on to separate from her husband, launch Beaucoup Bakery, write a cookbook and a memoir, and eventually relocate to Paris to start another business: The Paris Tours. Listen for Jackie's thoughts on how traveling forces you to be more present, the scariest part of making a massive life change, and why following your dreams, no matter how unrealistic they may seem, is the greatest privilege of all.
In this episode of The Cycling Podcast, Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe react to the route of the 2020 Tour de France, which was unveiled in Paris earlier in the day. There are new start and finish towns, new summit finishes and only one time trial – on the climb of La Planche des Belles Filles on the penultimate day – but what else is in store and who does it suit? This inevitably leads to a speculation-heavy conversation about a race that is still more than eight months away. Daniel describes the route as being more Biggie Smalls than Tupac, or is it more Tupac than Biggie? Lionel calls it the Tour de Tension, with something to challenge and unsettle more or less every day. Or is this a case of the Vueltafication of the Tour? We also discuss the weekend's two big races – il Lombardia, the final Monument of the season, and Paris-Tours, which has shed its reputation as a slightly dull, formulaic race for the sprinters with the controversial inclusion of the off-road tracks through the vineyards. The Cycling Podcast is supported by Rapha and Science In Sport.

In this episode, I get to interview my godsister, Jackie Kai Ellis. She is also my first celebrity guest! Jackie was the founder of Beaucoup Bakery in Vancouver, BC as well as the Paris Tours. She recently published her memoir called The Measure of My Powers. It's an intimate look at the struggles she experienced in her marriage, her battle with depression, and how she healed herself by doing what she loves, Baking!! We talk about our shared childhood memories, the struggles she experienced with depression, how she overcame her depression, her broken marriage and what she learned about herself, the satisfaction of pursuing her passion and opening up a bakery, and her future plans!!
Today's episode is a top-20 bonanza! I had tour guide extraordinaire April Pett in the studio to take me on a virtual walk through Paris. She gives her favourite street in each of the 20 Paris arrondissements. I like her list because it's not just streets, there are bridges, alleyways, elevated walkways and more, and she recommends them for different reasons. One street has the city's only baguette vending machine, for instance. Book a tour to see the streets of Paris with April here, at April in Paris tours, and be sure to drop my name. Now, before we get to the list, I've started taking my video camera and walking down these streets as a true Parisian flaneur. If you're a Patreon member in the brand new "Flaneur Club", I'll invite you to a closed Facebook page where I will take you down all 20 streets over the course of the coming months (and a lot more). I did the first one today in the 7th arrondissement by the Eiffel Tower. Thanks to those who joined live! Sign up today, your crowdfunding helps me make the show better! Anyway, enjoy the episode, here's the list of streets so you can mark them down for yourselves. Pictures to follow shortly on The Earful Tower. 1. Pont Neuf Sure, it’s a bridge, but it’s also a street and it’s a great one. You can see the Eiffel Tower in the distance and you can peer over into the beautiful little Square du Vert-Galant park. 2. Rue des Petit Champs This street is the access way to all the hidden passages of the 2nd arrondissement, some aren’t very visibly marked so just walk along this street . These passages are a glimpse into yesteryear, says April. 3. Rue de Franc Bourgeois In the heart of the Marais, you’ll find people flocking here, but don’t worry. It’s one of the best shopping streets in the city. On Sundays, in front of the Carnavalet museum, there’s a cute little jazz band of elderly musicians. It’s like an open-air concert, says April Pett. There’s Place des Vosges at one end too! 4. Rue des Barres Great for an afternoon glass of Rosé on a sunny day - and there are very colourful facades too! 5. Rue Mouffetard A lively, beautiful market street. April calls it a sensation for all of the sense. Plenty of cobblestones. Cheese, pastry, crepe, wine… it’s a foodie haven on any given day. There’s a great tart restaurant - La Maison des tarts. Get a tart to go for 2.50. 6. Cour du commerce Saint-Andre A combination of a small medieval cobblestones streets - don’t wear your high heels on this street! The Cafe Procope (see below) has been whipping out java since 1686. 7. Rue de Monttessuy Perhaps the best street for a view of the Iron Lady - get there in the evening if you want to see her sparkle, says April. 8. Avenue Montaigne It's full of luxury shops. If you’re lucky enough to see it at Christmas, you’ll understand why Paris deserves the moniker of City of Light. 9. Rue des Faubourg Montmartre Access to more hidden passages and the home to the oldest chocolate shop, A la Mere de la family, a chocolate shop from 1761. Bouillon Chartier, a legendary institution, 1896 and the prices are from 1896 too. It’s a big dining hall. You’ll feel like you’re at the halls of Oktoberfest. 10. Quai des Jemappes When the sun is shining, everyone goes down to the canal and has a glass of Rosé. 11. Passage Turquetil A beautiful little place with framed art along the sides of the buildings, not to mention the old shoes they’ve made into plant pots. 12. Coulee vert The elevated walkway, a great view of the 12th arrondissement. Get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. 13. Avenue des Choisy Restaurants, shops, and a great look into the Asian community of Paris. And it’s where you’ll find Pho 14 too, see below. 14. Square Montsouris It feels like an extension of the nearby Parc Montsouris, it’s townhouses, and it’s very green, says April. It’s a pocket of village inside bustling Paris. 15. Rue Paul-Barruel The only street in town with a baguette vending machine. The bread is partially cooked before it’s put in the machine. You put in a euro and it gets you a warm, freshly cooked baguette. 16. Rue de Passy Great place for boutique shopping, including the covered market of Passy. Check out the oyster and wine bar in the market, says April. 17. Rue des Dames Just north of Place de Clichy. It’s a nice place for an evening out, try the Cave Populaire wine bar - 7 euros for a bottle of wine. And 8 euros for a charcuterie board. And it’s not touristy at all compared to the nearby Montmartre. 18. Rue des Montcenis On the backside of Montmartre, these are the legendary stairs leading up to the Sacré-Coeur. You'll never feel more Parisian than when you're scaling these stairs. 19. Rue de la Villette A small street north of Parc de Belleville and leading to Buttes Chaumont, check out the restaurant there called Escargot (if you like things like snail, frogs’ legs, and kangaroos), says April. 20. Rue Denoyez This place is an open canvas for street artists to lay out their masterpieces, says April. Check out the bar Aux Folies at one end, where it feels like Happy Hour every hour (and where Edith Piaf began her career as a cabaret singer). That's it! All 20. Now, all these excellent tips have been added to my ever-growing Ultimate Guide to Paris (170 tips now!). The guide is hidden for Patreon members who are in the Friends of the Show club. Lastly, if you can't justify becoming a Patron of the show but want to show your support, please leave a review on iTunes and I may just read it out on air! And don't forget if you want a friend in Paris, book a tour with April in Paris Tours.
In Episode 98 the Warren brothers promote the Warren Cycling Podcast Strava Cycling Club. It's good to be a part of a cycling community. Randy and Dean discuss the end of the European road racing campaign where Bahrain-Merida's Vincenzo Nibali won Il Lambardia in Italy and fellow countryman Matteo Trentin (Quick-Step Floors) won Paris-Tours in a three up sprint. Road racing continues in Turkey with the World Tour stage race, and a couple of American based teams race in the Tour of Taihu Lake in China. Many racers are taking a break now and Randy suggest ways to bridge the time between seasons. The Warrens round out the podcast talking about the Masters Track World Championships and cyclo-cross racing.

Peter Sagan pulls off an unprecedented third straight World Road Championships, and Whit and Joe break it down: is Worlds somehow more suited to Sagan’s strength than any other style of racing? So, could he possibly make history as the winningest men’s rider of all time and win a fourth next year? Plus: will new leadership at the UCI portend any significant changes, or will it be business as usual? And what to make of new rules reducing the size of pelotons for 2018 - will it make racing safer? More exciting? Whit and Joe have opinions. Man, do they ever.
