This week, we discuss two films from American director and choreographer Bob Fosse. The first is All That Jazz (1979), a musical drama starring Roy Scheider. The screenplay, by Robert Alan Aurthur and Fosse, is a semi-autobiographical fantasy based on aspects of Fosse's life and career as a dancer, choreographer and director. The film was inspired by Fosse's manic effort to edit his film Lenny while simultaneously staging the 1975 Broadway musical Chicago. The second is Star 80 (1983), a biographical drama film written and directed by Bob Fosse. It was adapted from the Pulitzer Prize-winning Village Voice article "Death of a Playmate" by Teresa Carpenter and is based on Canadian Playboy model Dorothy Stratten, who was murdered by her husband Paul Snider in 1980. The film's title is taken from one of Snider's vanity license plates. The film was Fosse's final film before his death in 1987. Dorothy Stratten was on a fast track to stardom after she had been discovered by Playboy in 1979. Her career quickly transitioned from her being a waitress at a Dairy Queen in Vancouver Canada, to being named the Playboy Playmate for the month of August in 1979, to being named Playmate of the year in 1980. By the end of 1979 and in early 1980, Dorothy begun to experience success as a TV and movie actress. However, on Aug 14, 1980, 20-year-old Dorothy would meet with her soon to be ex-husband, Paul Snider to discuss their divorce settlement. Sadly, this would be the last meeting Dorothy ever had.  Sources:  Teresa Carpenter, “Death of a Playmate”, The Village Voice, November 5, 1980, https://www.villagevoice.com/death-of-a-playmate/, accessed June 23, 2024.    “Playboy's Roller Disco and Pajama Party”, IMDB, https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2446238/?ref_=ttfc_fc_tt, accessed June 22, 2024.    “Fantasy Island”, IMDB, https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0077008/, accessed June 22, 2014.    “The Mermaid/The Victim”, IMDB, https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0577840/?ref_=nm_flmg_eps_tt_1, accessed June 22, 2024.    “Buck Rogers in the 25th Century”, IMDB, https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078579/?ref_=tt_ov_inf, accessed June 22, 2024.    “Cruise Ship to the Stars”, IMDB, https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0533098/?ref_=ttep_ep11, accessed June 22, 2024.    “They All Laughed”, IMDB, https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0083189/?ref_=nm_flmg_t_1_act, accessed June 22, 2024.    Jon Azpiri, “The grisly murder of B.C.-born Playboy Playmate Dorothy Stratten still resonates 40 years later”, Global News,  Sept 22, 2020, https://globalnews.ca/news/7273712/dorothy-stratten-murder-40-years/, accessed June 23, 2024.    Leslie Veliz, “INSIDE THE TRAGIC RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN DOROTHY STRATTEN AND PETER BOGDANOVICH”, Grunge, June 22, 2022, https://www.grunge.com/903713/inside-the-tragic-relationship-between-dorothy-stratten-and-peter-bogdanovich/, accessed June 23, 2024.    “The Killing of the Unicorn”, Wikipedia, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Killing_of_the_Unicorn, accessed June 23, 2024.    Jessica McBride, “Dorothy Stratten Crime Scene: What the Coroner Found”, Heavy, Oct 18, 2019, https://heavy.com/entertainment/2019/10/dorothy-stratten-crime-scene-autopsy/, accessed June 23, 2024.    Shannon Carlin, “The True Story Behind Hulu's Welcome to Chippendales”, Time, Nov 23, 2022, https://time.com/6235751/welcome-to-chippendales-hulu-true-story/, accessed June 23, 2024.

Next week we have a really good two parter for you!! - Dorothy Stratten was only 18 years old when she caught the eye of Playboy magazine. Her 26 year old husband Paul Snider, yes you read that right, helped her get her start. After she fell in love with someone else she approached Paul, given that their relationship was more of a business arrangement, in order to tell him she was leaving. Three years later, Star 80 was released, a sensational retelling of Stratten's story that hit too close to home for some. Dorothy Stratten was 19 year old Canadian who had just met Paul Snider, a 26 year old club promotor & pimp during the summer of 1978. The 2 began dating and he told Dorothy she should take some nude photographs which he sent to Playboy. By August 1978, Paul & Dorothy moved to Los Angeles where she was chosen as a finalist for the 25h Anniversary Playmate hunt. August 1979, Dorothy was Playboy's August 1979 and her fame grew. She loved to act, and found herself in a few movies. On one of these sets, she met director, Peter Bogdanovich and the two started an affair while filming in NY. Dorothy was spending more and more time in NY, which left Paul in LA stewing over Dorothy. Dorothy had decided she wanted to separate and divorce Paul. August 14, 1980, Dorothy arrived at Paul's house around Noon to discuss a divorce settlement. Paul's roommates had left in the morning and arrived some time around 8pm, shocked that Dorothy's car was still out front. They believed the two had rekindled their relationship and left them be in Paul's bedroom. Around 11pm, Paul's roomates opened the door to Paul's bedroom to find both Paul and Dorothy dead, both by single blasts with a shotgun. In Episode 8, Kyle and Lisa discuss the August 14, 1980 murder of Playboy Playmate, Dorothy Stratten.  Dorothy was more than a pretty face, who stepped off the pages of Playboy and onto our television and theater screens.  During the two years between her arrival in Los Angeles and her casting in the movie They All Laughed, Dorothy grew from a shy, confused little girl into a confident woman, who knew what she wanted and knew how to stand up for herself.  Unfortunately, that meant that Dorothy quickly outgrew her hustler boyfriend, later her husband, Paul Snider.  While Snider had some success with promoting car shows and events in Vancouver, they never made enough money to support his extravagant tastes, which included expensive sports cars and a jewel encrusted Star of David pendant.  They talked about Dorothy's early life, her family, her relationship with the older Snider, their eventual marriage and her meteoric rise to stardom, which ended when her husband placed the barrel of a shotgun to her face and pulled the trigger.

The “Playmate Killer”, Paul Snider, was the ex-husband of Playboy Model Dorothy Stratten. Snider was one of the creators of Chippendales, the male strip club chain, but he is most remembered as the killer of Stratten. Their marriage lasted barely a year. When Stratten developed a romantic relationship with acclaimed film director Peter Bogdanovich, Snider's jealousy led to murder-suicide. Stratten was killed by Snider in the Los Angeles apartment they had once shared. On the same day, Snider killed himself. Police believe he raped Stratten and sexually abused her corpse as his last twisted obsession of the Playmate of 1980. Like what you hear and want more true crime and mystery? And  back again for more is Time Blinked author, prolific production manager and 80's Broadway and music video dancing sensation, George Young, who has a story about auditioning for Bob Fosse himself. Before we begin, the synopsis! Star 80 is a biopic cataloguing the brief rise and grisly fall of 1979 Playmate of the Year Dorothy Stratton, murdered at the hands of her domineering husband Paul Snider in 1980.Was it worth the wait? Find out!  NOTE: The film was based on a 1981 Pulitzer Prize winning Village Voice article by Teresa Carpenter entitled "Death of A Playmate." In the podcast, Roseanne reads from the article without naming it. We apologize for this glaring error.

In 1978, Dorothy Stratten was a teenager working at a Dairy Queen. Seemingly overnight she became a star - first appearing in Playboy, then becoming Hollywood's up-and-coming actress. While some were thrilled with her fame, including friend Hugh Hefner, others (like Dorothy's husband Paul Snider) couldn't stand to see her successful. Then we cover the Rachel Barber murder that shook Melbourne, Australia in 1999. Rachel Barber was a beautiful 15 year old girl, with her life and dancing career ahead of her. Little did she know her former babysitter (Caroline Reed Robertson) was an obsessive stalker, willing to do anything to take Rachel's place.Sources:https://www.harpersbazaar.com/culture/features/a12500777/dorothy-stratten-hugh-hefner-playboy-playmate/ https://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/horrific-murder-playboy-playmate-verge-hollywood-stardom-flaw/story?id=66193166 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dorothy_Strattenhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_Her_Skinhttps://www.mamamia.com.au/caroline-reed-robertson-rachel-barber/ https://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/law-order/caroline-reed-robertson-who-strangled-dancer-rachel-barber-in-1999-freed-on-parole/news-story/5ce7e1bd298fbc40145f6aacf02dbfed https://morbidology.com/the-deadly-obsession-the-murder-of-rachel-barber/ https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2916870/Jealous-killer-strangled-promising-dancer-phone-cord-plotted-steal-identity-walk-free-jail-today-victim-s-parents-ask-allowed-life.html Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/badsign)

Ash wanted to dive into a vintage Hollywood case this week, and the Dorothy Stratten case stuck out like a sore thumb! Dorothy Stratten was 17 years old working behind the counter at a Dairy Queen in Canada when Paul Snider took notice of her. He was struck by her beauty, and saw her as more of a meal ticket to climb his way up the social ladder in Hollywood. Dorothy became a huge playboy star, becoming Miss August 1979 and later Playmate of the year for 1980, but her steady incline in the world of modeling and acting all came plummeting down in August 1980 when Paul Snider decided if he couldn’t have Dorothy, neither could anyone else.  This pulitzer prize written piece written by Teresa Carpenter is where Ash got a TON of info (http://reprints.longform.org/death-of-a-playmate) As always, thank you to our sponsors Better Help: Special offer for our listeners get 10% off your first month at http://betterhelp.com/Morbid Skylight: Now, as a special offer, you can get $10 off your purchase of a Skylight Frame when you go http://Skylightframe.com and enter code Morbid. He reportedly had not thought much of being in the house past it being a part of 'American Folklore', in his words, until he met Tate's sister by chance and she asked him point blank if he was trying to capitalize on her death.
