A version of this essay has been published by Open Magazine at https://openthemagazine.com/essays/the-new-knowledge-war/Generative AI, as exemplified by chatGPT from Microsoft/OpenAI and Bard from Google, is probably the hottest new technology of 2023. Its ability has mesmerised consumers to provide answers to all sorts of questions, as well as to create readable text or poetry and images with universal appeal. These generative AI products purport to model the human brain (‘neural networks') and are ‘trained' on large amounts of text and images from the Internet. Large Language Models or ‘LLMs' are the technical term for the tools underlying generative AI. They use probabilistic statistical models to predict words in a sequence or generate images based on user input. For most practical purposes, this works fine. However, in an earlier column in Open Magazine, “Artificial Intelligence is like Allopathy”, we pointed out that in both cases, statistical correlation is being treated by users as though it were causation. In other words, just because two things happened together, you can't assume one caused the other. This flaw can lead to completely wrong or misleading results in some cases: the so-called ‘AI hallucination'. To test our hypothesis, we asked chatGPT to summarise that column. It substantially covered most points, but surprisingly, though, it completely ignored the term ‘Ayurveda', although we had used it several times in the text to highlight ‘theory of disease'. This is thought-provoking, because it implies that in the vast corpus of data that chatGPT trained on, there is nothing about Ayurveda. The erasure of Indic knowledgeEpistemology is the study of knowledge itself: how we acquire it, and the relationship between knowledge and truth. There is a persistent concern that Indic knowledge systems are severely under-represented or mis-represented in epistemology in the Anglosphere. Indian intellectual property is ‘digested', to use Rajiv Malhotra's evocative term. For that matter, India does not receive credit for innovations such as Indian numerals (misnamed Arabic numerals), vaccination (attributed to the British, though there is evidence of prior knowledge among Bengali vaidyas), or the infinite series for mathematical functions such as pi or sine (ascribed to Europeans, though Madhava of Sangamagrama discovered them centuries earlier). The West (notably, the US) casually captures and repackages it even today. Meditation is rebranded as ‘mindfulness', and the Huberman Lab at Stanford calls Pranayama ‘cyclic sighing'. A few years ago, the attempts of the US to patent basmati rice and turmeric were foiled by the provision of ‘prior art', such as the Hortus Malabaricus, written in 1676 about the medicinal plants of the Western Ghats. Judging by current trends, Wikipedia, and presumably Google, LinkedIn, and other text repositories, are not only bereft of Indian knowledge, but also full of anti-Indian and specifically anti-Hindu disinformation. Any generative AI relying on this ‘poisoned' 'knowledge base' will, predictably, produce grossly inaccurate output. This has potentially severe consequences: considering that Sanskrit, Hindi, Tamil, Bengali (and non-Latin scripts) etc. are underrepresented on the Internet, generative AI models will not learn or generate text from these languages. For all intents and purposes, Indic knowledge will disappear from the discourse. These issues will exacerbate the bias against non-English speakers, who will not think about their identity or culture, reducing diversity and killing innovation.More general problems with epistemology: bias, data poisoning and AI hallucinationsGenerative AI models are trained on massive datasets of text and code. This means they are susceptible to inherent biases. A case in point: if a dataset is biased against non-white females, then the generative AI model will be more likely to generate text that is also biased against non-white women. Additionally, malicious actors can poison generative AI models by injecting false or misleading data into the training dataset. For example, a coordinated effort to introduce anti-India biases into Wikipedia articles (in fact this is the case today) will produce output that is notably biased.  An example of this is a query about Indian democracy to Google Bard: it produced a result that suggested this is a Potemkin construct (i.e., one that is merely a facade); Hindu nationalism and tight control of the media “which has become increasingly partisan and subservient to the government” were highlighted as concerns. This is straight from ‘toolkits', which have poisoned the dataset and are helped, in part, by US hegemonic economic dominance. More subtly, generative AI models are biased towards Western norms and values (or have a US-centric point of view). For example, the Body Mass Index (BMI), a measure of body fat, has been used in Western countries to determine obesity, but is a poor measure for the Indian population, as we tend to have a higher percentage of body fat than our Western counterparts. An illustration of AI hallucination came to the fore from an India Today story entitled "Lawyer faces problems after using ChatGPT for research. AI tool comes up with fake cases that never existed." It reported how a lawyer who used ChatGPT-generated precedents had his case dismissed because the court found the references were fabricated by AI. Similar risks in the medical field for patient treatment will be exacerbated if algorithms are trained on non-curated datasets. While these technologies promise access to communication, language itself becomes a barrier. For instance, due to the dominant prevalence of English literature, a multilingual model might link the word dove with peace, but the Basque word for dove (‘uso') is used as a slur. Many researchers have encountered the limitations of these LLMs, for other languages like Spanish or Japanese. ChatGPT struggles to mix languages fluently in the same utterance, such as English and Tamil, despite claims of 'superhuman' performance. The death of Intellectual Property RightsIntellectual property rights are a common concern. Already, generative AIs can produce exact copies (tone and tenor) of creative works by certain authors (for example, J K Rowling's Harry Potter series). This is also true of works of art. Two things are happening in the background: any copyright inherent in these works has been lost, and creators will cease to create original works for lack of incentives (at least according to current intellectual property theory). A recent Japanese decision to ignore copyrights in datasets used for AI training (from the blog technomancers.ai, “Japan Goes All In: Copyright Doesn't Apply to AI Training”) is surprisingly bold for that nation, which moves cautiously by consensus. The new Japanese law allows AI to use any data “regardless of whether it is for non-profit or commercial purposes, whether it is an act other than reproduction, or whether it is content obtained from illegal sites or otherwise.” Other governments will probably follow suit. This is a land-grab or a gold rush: India cannot afford to sit on the sidelines.India has dithered on a strict Data Protection Bill, which would mandate Indian data to be held locally; indirectly, it would stem the cavalier capture and use of Indian copyright. The Implications are chilling; in the absence of economic incentives, nobody will bother to create new works of fiction, poetry, non-fiction, music, film, or art. New fiction and art produced by generative AI will be Big Brother-like. All that we would be left with as a civilisation will be increasingly perfect copies of extant works: Perfect but soulless. The end of creativity may mean the end of human civilisation. With AIs doing ‘creation', will people even bother? Maybe individual acts of creation, but then they still need the distribution channels so that they reach the public. In the past in India, kings or temples supported creative geniuses while they laboured over their manuscripts, and perhaps this will be the solution: State sponsorship for creators.Indian Large Language Models: too few yet, while others are moving aheadDiverse datasets will reduce bias and ensure equitable Indic representation to address the concerns about generative AI. Another way is to use more rigorous training methods to reduce the risk of data poisoning and AI hallucinations.Progressive policy formulations, without hampering technological developments, are needed for safe and responsible use to govern the use of LLM's across disciplines, while addressing issues of copyright infringement and epistemological biases. Of course, there is the question of creating ‘guardrails': some experts call for a moratorium, or strict controls, on the growth of generative AI systems. We must be alive to its geopolitical connotations, as well. The Chinese approach to comprehensive data-collection is what cardiologists refer to as a ‘coronary steal phenomenon': one segment of an already well-perfused heart ‘steals' from another segment to its detriment. The Chinese, for lack of better word, plunder (and leech) data while actively denying market access to foreign companies. Google attempted to stay on in China with Project Dragonfly, while Amazon, Meta, Twitter were forced to exit the market. Meanwhile, ByteDance, owner of TikTok, is trying to obscure its CCP ties by moving to a 'neutral jurisdiction' in Singapore, while siphoning off huge amounts of user data from Europe and the US (and wherever else it operates) for behavioural targeting and capturing personal level data, including from children and young adults. The societal implications of the mental health 'epidemic' (depression, low self-esteem, and suicide) remain profound and seem like a reversal of the Opium Wars the West had unleashed on China. India can avoid Chinese exclusivism by keeping open access to data flows while insisting on data localisation. The Chinese have upped the ante. Reuters reported that “Chinese organisations have launched 79 AI large language models since 2020”, citing a report from their Ministry of Science and Technology. Many universities, especially in Southeast Asia, are creating new data sets to address the spoken dialects. West Asia, possibly realizing the limitations of “peak-oil”, have thrown their hat in the ring. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) claims to have created the world's “first capable, commercially viable open-source general-purpose LLM, which beats all Big Tech LLMs”. According to the UAE's Technology Innovation Institute, the Falcon 40B is not only royalty free, but also outperforms “Meta's LLaMA and Stability AI's StableLM”. This suggests that different countries recognise the importance of investing resources to create software platforms and ecosystems for technological dominance. This is a matter of national security and industrial policy.“We have no moat” changes everything: welcome to tiny LLMsChiranjivi from IIT Bombay, IndiaBERT from IIT Delhi and Tarang from IIT Madras are a few LLMs from India. India needs to get its act together to bring out many more LLMs: these can focus on, and be trained on, specialised datasets representing specific domains, for instance, that can avoid data poisoning. The Ministries concerned should provide support, guidance, and funding. The obstacle has been the immense hardware and training requirements: GPT-3, the earlier generation LLM, required 16,384 Nvidia chips at a cost of over $100 million. Furthermore, it took almost a year to train the model with 500 billion words, at a cost of hundreds of millions of dollars. There was a natural assumption: the larger the data set, the better the result with ‘emergent' intelligence. This sheer scale of investments was considered beyond Indian purview. A remarkable breakthrough was revealed in a leaked internal Google memo, timed with Bard's release, titled "We have no moat, and neither does OpenAI," a veritable bombshell. It spoke about Meta's open sourcing its algorithmic platform, LLaMA, and implications for generative AI research.  Although there is no expert consensus, the evidence suggests smaller datasets can produce results almost as good as the large datasets. This caused a flutter among the cognoscenti. Despite Meta releasing its crown jewels for a wider audience (developers), there was an uptick in its stock value, despite failures in its multiple pivots beyond social media. To understand this better, Geoffrey Hinton, the ‘godfather' of deep learning, explains in detail: All large language model (LLM) copies can learn separately, but share their knowledge instantly. That's how chatbots know more than an average person. The performance trajectory of different LLM's has skyrocketed; for example, consider this: Using LLaMa as a base, researchers were able to quickly (in weeks) and cheaply (a few $100) produce Alpaca and Vicuna that, despite having fewer parameters, compete well with Google's and openAI's models. The graph shows that the answers from their chatbots are comparable in quality (per GPT-4). A fine-tuning technique called LoRA (Low Rank Adoption) is the secret behind this advance. This abruptly levels the playing field. Open-source models can be quickly scaled and run on even laptops and phones! Hardware is no longer a constraint. Let a thousand Indian LLMs bloom!  The way forwardGiven the astonishing amounts being invested by venture capitalists and governments in generative AI, there will be an explosion in startup activity. There are already a few in India, such as Gan, Kroopai, Peppertype.ai, Rephrase.ai, TrueFoundry, and Cube. Still, TechCrunch quoted Sanford Bernstein analysts who painted a gloomy picture: “While there are over 1500 AI-based startups in India with over $4 billion of funding, India is still losing the AI innovation battle”. Without exaggeration, it can be argued that this is an existential threat for India, and needs to be addressed on a war-footing. The AIforBharat initiative at IIT Madras is a start, but much more is needed. A sharply focused set of policies and regulations needs to be implemented by the government immediately that will both prevent the plunder of our intellectual property and data, and also encourage the creation of large numbers of models that make good use of Indian ingenuity and Indic knowledge.2245 words, 4 June 2023 This is a public episode. Lovely yayborhood, this episode has been a long time coming with a guest I've admired for many years now. We have one of those relationships unique to our modern digital life where we haven't actually met in person but have followed each other's work and lives for some time, share many mutual friends and had just SO much to talk about…  As you'll hear, that means I strayed all over the place from my usual structured thinking I just had so many questions on so many topics and once you learn a bit more about Tarang Chawla, you'll understand why. Tarang is not only a fellow former lawyer but also an author, keynote speaker, anti-violence campaigner, gender equality and mental health advocate, former political candidate, and even a Commissioner at the Victorian Multicultural Commission, so it was impossible to feel like I did anything more than scratch the surface and I suspect this won't be our only chat on the show.  Just a content warning, we also cover one of the catalysts for his incredible activism being the tragic murder of his younger sister Niki at the age of 23 by her then-husband as well as the impact of this on his own mental health briefly discussing suicide, so please take care while listening. How Tarang has come through this horrific tragedy and dedicated himself to Nikki's legacy with anti-violence campaigning is nothing short of inspiring and opens up a much more layered and complex conversation about joy in life than is usually the case on the show, which I hope lands in the ears of those who might need to hear it. In this episode, host Dr. Aparna Baheti interviews Dr. Tarang Patel, diagnostic radiologist and creator of the Doctor Money Matters Podcast, about private equity in radiology, from why to get in to how to get out. --- CHECK OUT OUR SPONSOR RADPAD® Radiation Protection https://www.radpad.com/ --- SHOW NOTES After getting out of the air force, Dr. Patel didn't know what to do with the significant salary increase he was given. He had a lot of questions and wanted to learn how to manage his finances as a physician. In 2015, he created a website, which soon developed into a podcast. In doing this, his goal was to speak with guests who were experts in aspects of physician finance so that he could learn. He was also interested in disseminating the information with others, because he knew many physicians had similar questions about finance. Next, we discuss the private equity (PE) landscape, specifically in Phoenix, where Dr. Patel practices. He is a hospital employee and has never been part of a PE owned practice, but knows many in Phoenix who went through the Rad Partners buyout there. He explains the evolution of the Rad Partners deal. There were three dominant radiology groups that employed over 100 radiologists. They were approached by Rad Partners and decided to sell and become one large group. This resulted in one dominant radiology group in all of Phoenix. These physicians were all locked into a 5 year contract, which ended in late 2022. At this time, there was a mass exodus of radiologists from this group due to their dissatisfaction with the way the practice was run or how their contracts ended up playing out. Dr. Patel explains how they were able to attract so many people by incentivizing the deal with a heavy cash to share ratio. This gave providers a sense of a guarantee, which a higher share buyout would not have provided. This is because the PE company ascribes value to the shares, and it is unknown at onset whether they will financially profit in the long run. Dr. Patel further explains that joining a PE owned practice is generally a bad deal for young radiologists, because they are offered lower salaries and don't get any buyout. This has resulted in PE companies failing to hire young doctors. Additionally, many older doctors near retirement use a PE deal as a way to get a large cash payout, work for a few more years, and retire. Dr. Patel believes that due to hiring difficulties and the high debt burden of many PE companies, they will start to close practices, which will open up the market for new practice models. He believes the radiology landscape will be vastly different in 5 years than it is now. Dr. Patel ends by saying you should never trust an offer that advertises low risk and high return. Additionally, for young radiologists looking for jobs out of training, he urges you not to follow the highest offer, but rather find the practice you enjoy going to work at everyday, even if the pay is lower. In the end, you will make the money, and it is worth enjoying your job and your colleagues. --- RESOURCES Ep. 287 OBL/ASC Reimbursement Update January 2023 https://www.backtable.com/shows/vi/podcasts/287/obl-asc-reimbursement-update-jan-2023

During the dark days of the pandemic not everyone was baking sourdough. Many women were locked in their homes with people they feared, and psychological, physical, financial and fatal abuse played out behind closed doors with domestic violence continuing to devastate too many lives. Tarang Chawla is a writer, speaker, anti-violence campaigner and mental health advocate, whose beloved 23-year-old sister Niki was tragically murdered by her partner.  Niki's horrific death and inspiring life has become the catalyst for Tarang's powerful change-making. Named as Young Australian of the Year Finalist, AFL Community Champion Award Winner, India-Australia Young Community Achiever of the Year, and Pro Bono Top 25 Most Influential Australians, Tarang founded the ‘Not One More Niki' movement, Australia's largest campaign to end violence against women in culturally diverse communities. Tarang continues to use his voice to serve the community and champion human rights, and has just released a ground-breaking new podcast in collaboration with Future Women and supported by CommBank called There's No Place Like Home, which features the stories of 10 extraordinary people who have survived family violence and domestic abuse. In this difficult, inspirational and hope-filled conversation on Human Cogs, Tarang emphasizes the importance of victim-survivors stories, explores how we move to solutions, and shares how keeping his sister's spirit alive in his everyday has given him the fuel to keep fighting for social change. “I'd sit alone and watch your light My only friend through teenage nights And everything I had to know I heard it on my radio” (Radio Ga Ga: Roger Taylor, Queen, 1984) We couldn’t agree more. Radio was our friend. It united us. It forged our national identity. And it brought the world to our homes. It is often said politics, films and cricket are what bind India. Radio made that cohesion possible. In today’s episode we talk about Radio and its profound impact on our society. The iconic mournful signature tune and its history; the sabha on the eve of our independence, the legends who spoke on the airwaves, the stories of our victories in hockey and cricket and the songs and programmes that caught our imagination – we pay our homage to them. Because Radio built the new India. In spotlight we feature arguably the most versatile music composer of Indian cinema. A scholar of music who was versed with it grammar and experimented with its form in some of the landmark films, TV series and jingles of 70s and 80s. E.l.f. Cosmetics CEO Tarang Amin on the strategies that turned the beauty company around

When E.l.f. Cosmetics went public in 2016 after a majority investment from TPG just two years earlier, it seemed like the sky was the limit for the millennial-minded beauty brand. "E.l.f. has always been this brand that had the best of beauty, but made it accessible at these incredible price points," E.l.f. Chairman and CEO Tarang Amin said on the Glossy Beauty Podcast. The company had just reached about $100 million in yearly sales when TPG invested -- in part by cracking how to sell $1 priced makeup online -- and was growing 20% annually, according to Amin. But 2018 saw a slump in both the company's sales and relevance online. "For us it seemed like death," Amin said. The year-long slowing of color cosmetic sales overall didn't help his outlook. E.l.f. closed its 22 standalone stores in February 2019. But freeing up $13.7 million in capital helped the company focus on e-commerce and wholesale via its "Project Unicorn" plan to turn the business around. Thanks to a repackaging campaign (favoring colors, not just black); a renewed focus on fewer, but better prestige-level products; and a TikTok brand challenge, E.l.f. has seen four quarters of growth. And in many cases, the company has bested its competitors in the makeup segment. Amin talked about the ongoing headwinds in the color cosmetics category, the white space opening up in India, the company's plan for incubation and M&A and his indifference, at first, to the rise of influencer-driven brands.

Episode 12. Tarang Patel, DO -- Roboadvisors

Doctor Money Matters

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 6, 2017 30:12

This is my first solo episode. I talk about roboadvisors and the pros and cons of using them. I also review some of the larger and most popular companies providing this service. What is a robo-advisor? It is a computer algorithm based approach to managing your investments. (Note this generally applies to your stock market accounts) A robo advisor is designed to eliminate the need for an individual to make trading decisions about the stocks or ETFs in an account.  This is not the same as Wall Street computer-based trading which can be millions of trades in a day. Rather, this is designed to simulate a financial advisor in optimizing asset allocation and rebalancing a portfolio when necessary to achieve diversification and some of them are supposed to do tax loss harvesting to reduce the capital gains and possibly reduce some of your income tax as well. These are not generally designed to replace the other aspects of a financial advisor such as goal planning, advice about insurance, tax advice, etc. So what are the pros and cons of a robo advisor while one benefit is there extremely low cost compared to the average financial advisor most financial advisers range from .75 to 1.25% of your assets under management. Now, there a is a trend of financial advisors going to fixed cost management such as a fixed fee whether you have $100,000 or $2,000,000 under management but those are still the exception rather than the rule.  These advisors are still more expensive than Robo advisors but as noted above, they provide you with a more broad array of advice. If you do end up choosing a human financial advisor make sure you pick a fee-only advisor or a flat cost advisor who holds the CFP designation and is a Fiduciary. Now getting back to Robo advisors, some of the pros include low cost. The majority range from  free to 0.35% of assets under management, though a few are slightly higher and I'll talk about those when I discuss the individual ones. The majority of the robo advisors don't trade individual stocks, rather they use a portfolio of ETFs to give you a wide diversification. In my opinion however, you can generally achieve this diversification with only a few individual ETFs. The second Pro of these Robo advisors is they eliminate this work for you you can just put your money in and basically let the computer do its thing and you don't have to worry about anything else other than when you end up needing the money.  In my opinion however this is probably not the best way to approach any advisor whether it's a robo advisor or human advisor after all this is your money you're putting in if you just put it in and basically ignore what's happening you are at risk for any number of issues. Always pay attention. It doesn't mean you have to make the individual trades or decisions but just know what's going on and that could be as simple as looking at your statements every quarter so that you're just aware of what's happening. You may not have any issues and that's the ideal scenario . The next benefit of Robo advisors and probably the one that is talked about the most is the tax-loss harvesting. Some of these advisors claim that by optimizing tax-loss harvesting you will improve your returns. If done properly it should override the cost of the majority of these Robo advisors by a significant amount. What is tax-loss harvesting? Tax loss harvesting is where the government allows you to reduce your capital gains and your income tax by subtracting any losses you've had from your investments from any games you've add so for example let's say you own an ETF which covered the S&P 500 and that ETF you've had it for 5 years and the S&P has done relatively well over the last five years has gained $5,000 so you had a $10,000 investment and it's $15,000 now I'm not sure if those are the exact numbers but let's just use that so if you had another ETF let's say was an international ETF and for whatever reason that ETF did poorly and you lost $4,000 Your gain of $5,000 is subject to taxes if you only sold the position where you had a game but you also have this International ETF where you lost $4,000 so if you take the two together and your Net gain is only $1,000 and you only owe taxes on that thousand dollars. now let's say instead of a gain of $5,000 you only had a gain of $2,000 and you had the same $4,000 loss on the international ETF well in that case your net loss is $2,000 and that can be used against your ordinary income which for most positions is taxed at a higher rate than long-term capital gains so that tax loss of $2,000 is actually worth more to you because it can reduce your income of let's say $250,000 to now $248,000 and that's what you can text on which can be a savings of a few hundred dollars on your taxes.  So why does a robo advisor do this better than humans and what ends up happening is that most years  unless you need to sell the underlying security you don't want to take anything with a game particularly in a taxable account because you basically reduced your Net game because you have to pay the rest in text so you're better off holding games for as long as you can but of course within reason because at some point you will have to take the money out when you need it but none like you should be taking every year use them to reduce your regular income as much as possible now as a loss Okay so that is tax-loss harvesting and if done properly it can help boost your returns. The promise of Robo advisors is that they'll do this for you so you don't have to think about it at a fraction of the cost of a human advisor. So what are some of the cons of picking Robo advisors well one is the cost like I said it's not free for the most part there are a few that are for me but they tend to have a little bit more limited services. the next is and I don't know that this is particularly on it's just that you could probably do this yourself without spending that much time and get almost similar results. Now  in my opinion most of the time you're probably better off simplifying your accounts as much as possible and doing the stuff that you do need to do on your own just so that you are aware of your finances and no one for lack of a better term screw with you. Who are some of the companies that have these Robo-advisory services The most famous ones and probably some of the earliest ones are betterment and wealthfront other companies include wisebanyan and then some of the larger discount brokerages now offer these services such as Vanguard Schwab fidelity. some of the traditional Wall Street firms such as Merrill Lynch and Morgan Stanley also offer these but I don't have enough information about reviewing them. So let's talk about the individual companies now Betterment 0.25% fees. (0.4-0.5% if you want access to a human CFP, only available on portfolios over $100k Fees not charged for any assets over $2mil Uses low cost Vanguard and iShares ETFs (No trading costs, but the ETFs have their own fees (low cost but are not included in the above management fee) Claim to generate an extra 2.66% in annualized return over 20 years on a $100k portfolio based on Passive investing Tax harvesting Better behavior In my opinion, I would only count the extra (0.4%) for tax loss harvesting as a true gain, because the other 2.2% can be achieved by anyone who uses index funds or ETFs and does a buy and hold philosophy Wealthfront 0.25% fees Claim up to 2.05% increase in returns due similar factors as Betterment Unique feature called direct indexing (instead of using ETFs, if you have >100k in your account they buy a portfolio of individual securities to improve tax loss harvesting opportunities (Basket of 1000 stocks which always has some losers so you should have more likelihood of being able to take losses against income vs ETF which is the average of all these stocks so if market is up you can’t take a loss even though some stocks are likely down) Link to the methodology on my website. If you do use this feature or even with ETFs you have to make sure that you don’t make any transactions in accounts not managed by the robo-advisor which may conflict with IRS Wash Sale rule A wash sale is the sale at a loss and purchase of the same security or substantially similar security within 30 days of each other. If a wash sale transaction occurs, the IRS may disallow or defer the loss for current tax reporting purposes. More specifically, the wash sale period for any sale at a loss consists of 61 calendar days: the day of the sale, the 30 days before the sale, and the 30 days after the sale. The wash sale rule postpones losses on a sale, if replacement shares are bought around the same time. Features Passive Plus (Basic robo-advisor service similar to others) Direct Indexing (Kicks in for free once assets > $100k) Advanced Indexing (Alternative weighting to traditional market cap ETFs) Kicks in for free once assets > $500k Link to explanation about advanced indexing. Uses Low cost ETFs (Avg fee is 0.12% so net fee is around (0.37%) Vanguard Personal Advisor Services Hybrid model with Human and robo advisor Need $50k to invest. Fee 0.3% plus ETF costs They give you a dedicated advisor if >$500k managed Mostly vanguard products but can use others (you may incur transaction costs but likely minimal Not quite as much automated tax loss harvesting Wise Banyan No management fee at all for basic account No trading fees Low cost ETFs (ave .12%) Only for individual taxable accounts or IRAs (No joint accounts with spouse or kids trust accounts) Tax loss Harvesting is extra (0.25% up to $96k. No additional cost after that) Schwab Intelligent portfolios No management Fee Account Minimum $5000 Variety of portfolios (including conservative moderate and aggressive) Pro or con is they maintain a cash position which can be a drag on return (they can also make money by loaning out this cash) Tax loss harvesting available if portfolio > $50k SoFi Wealth Management 0.25% fee (First 10k free and no management fee if you are existing SoFi loan customer No tax loss harvesting Low account min ($500) Personal Capital High cost (0.89% up to $1 mil) reduces incrementally downward at higher levels Great App to track investments (free but they will call you occasionally to try to get business) Minimum investment amount $100k Fidelity Go 0.35% fee ETF only (Fidelity or BlackRock iShares) No tax loss harvesting $5k minimum DIY (Do it yourself) First don’t bother in a retirement account. (No need to TLH) If you don’t have much interest, use a target date fund. Alternatively use a 2 or 3 fund portfolio of a US Total stock, Total International Stock, and Total Bond fund. If you are far from retirement you can eliminate the Bond Fund. Here is a link to simple portfolios that you can use from bogleheads.org. Most retirement plan providers have some index funds in them and it will save you thousands of dollars over the long run if you take the time to find them when you first start In a taxable account, there are a few simple options. Again you can use a target date fund to keep it really simple, or you can use the multi fund portfolios. In a taxable account, it may make more sense to use a few more funds/ETFs so that you have the ability to TLH. I personally do the DIY, but I am not sure it is the best over the long term. At the time of this podcast recording, I have no robo advisors, but I do have accounts with some of the companies mentioned. I do not currently receive any advertising from these companies. In my general opinion, the best options seem to be Wise Banyan for those who are just starting out, and Wealthfront for those with more assets to invest. I'm sure the other companies are fine also. Remember I am not a financial advisor, rather a DIY investor. Please do your own due diligence before investing with any of these companies.

The Mumbai based collective known as Mental Martians is made up of Piyush Bhatnagar aka Sound Avtar, Sarvesh Shrivastava and Tarang Singhal, 3 young producers with a taste for various forms of bass music. Influenced by artists such as Noisia, Spor, Doctor P, Skrillex and Rusko, their sound is a heady journey incorporating both UK underground and Asian underground sensibilities. We've been wanting to tie these boys down for a mix, for as long as we can remember. With a collaborate career spanning over 10 years, and influences ranging from classical Indian right through to IDM and electro, alongside the percussive genius of Tarang who plays the tabla, darbuka, jembe and drums, they're a visionary and well rounded force. "Their sounds are magical and danceable at the same time. A vivid journey into the unknown and the un-chartered, the sublime and the scintillating, promising to introduce a sound that is enjoyed by the masses whilst being anthem-like and cerebral at the same time." Over the course of 30 mins, their mix runs through 15 tracks. Yup, you do the math. Frequently laying down a steady beat, it isn't afraid to move away from its smooth beginnings on to more pounding rhythms. Favouring sounds that are clean and crisp, there's occasionally a delicate feel to the proceedings, a sensation that's only strengthened by their tight mixing.
