In this final episode of our three-part immigration series, we wrap up the conversation by asking the big question: What can actually be done?Over the last two episodes, we've tried to slow down and do the hard work of defining our terms. We began by asking, “What is immigration?” and then moved to, “How does the system work?” Now, we're talking about possible solutions—from political reform to biblical responses. Here's what we cover in this episode:Is illegal immigration a crisis or a political talking point? The real meaning of terms like “undocumented” vs. “illegal immigrant”Why tiered consequences may help bring clarity and compassion to the conversationHow our justice system often swings between cruelty and chaosWhether there's even a realistic solution—and what our role as Christians should beWe also reflect on how language has been weaponized, and how many people being deported today made decisions based on outdated or overturned policies. As Anton puts it, “We made the rules. Then we changed them. And now we're punishing people for following the old ones.”Whether you're feeling overwhelmed by the complexity of it all or looking for practical clarity, this episode aims to bring both thought and grace to the table.Let us know what you think. Psalm 18:3 Die Here is my rots, my skuilplek en my redder, my God, my rots, by wie ek skuil, my skild en sterk verlosser, my veilige vesting. Ja, my vriend, dit is nie net jy nie! Hier is sy reaksie nadat God hom van koning Saul en al sy vyande wat hom wou doodmaak, gered het:Psalm 18:2 Die Here is my rots, my skuilplek en my redder, my God, my rots, by wie ek skuil, my skild en sterk verlosser, my veilige vesting. Want Hy is jou Rots, jou veilige vesting. Dis Sy Woord. Our masculinity miniseries has been a little negative up until now (we're aware of it at least!). But this week that all changes because we're joined by Ben Hurst – activist, educator, and Head of Facilitation and Training at Beyond Equality – to discuss how we can rethink masculinity. As someone who regularly works with young boys in schools, we talk to Ben about what representation boys see of masculinity. In his Ted Talk, notes that boys will be what we teach them to be, so we talk about what characteristics boys currently associate with masculinity and being a man. Because toxic representations of masculinity result in violence, predominantly against women and girls, Ben explains how we can talk to men and boys to help them unlearn the more toxic traits of masculinity and reframe masculine traits to help themselves and those around them. Finally, we end the episode by talking about what boys think is expected of them when it comes to sex, and how sex education and male role models can do better. We hope you enjoy the episode, we've wanted to have Ben on since we started Sextras and we're so happy to have finally spoken to him and learnt from his wisdom. It starts with us developing ourselves as men. Too many men are living their lives based on what they "think" women want. This leads to confusion and pain from painful breakups and divorces. Men must stop focusing on what women want and must start focusing on three key things to develop as men. As they do this, they will automatically become more attractive to the right kind of woman.Quit Being What They Want As men, we must quit adapting to every whim we think women want or we will never be the men we were designed to beWe'll never figure out who we are if we are always playing a partWearing masks keeps us from developing intimacy in our relationshipsWhen a man is constantly changing based on a girl, he is not taking the time to figure himself outReal serving is done from strength and securityManipulative serving is done from insecurity and controlMen must go on the journey of figuring themselves out or they won't know how to authentically connect with a womanStart Building Our SecurityInsecurity is one of the biggest problems among men todayMen are controlled by women Men change for women based on their own insecurityWe must get to the foundation of who we are as menOur security is built on our foundation as men: our character, our worldview, our purposeMen often hide from this kind of deep thinking through the distractions of lifeMen who don't develop security, never grow up and mature as menDrive Our Own LifeWe must decide as men to drive our own life by taking responsibility for our actions and how we liveQuality Women want a man who knows who he is and what he is doing with his lifeMen who are hyper-control freaks often exhibit signs of extreme insecurity and control is how they try to keep order in their worldA man who is driving his life knows that he can control himself so he doesn't waste his energy on things he can't controlResponsible men can live authentically because they are constantly developing themselves and growing themselvesDriving our own life as men are contingent on having a direction to goMen who drive their life don't get caught up in the hedonistic trap so many men fall intoMentioned in this episode:Get your free Personal Reboot Guide Ebook to start your year strong! Back in the mid 2000s we were panicked that data centers would run out of capacity to run applications.  Then technology called virtualization was invented that changed everything (including the teams that managed it).Let's talk about how this story may help us predict how technical teams may change due to the advancement of AI in product development.Related Article - https://nxtstep.io/daily/data-center-capacity-problem/Find Product-Market Fit Faster - https://nxtstep.io/fit/Episode Transcript Hey folks, Sean here and today what I want to tell you about is the story of how a technology called virtual.  eliminated a entire crisis that we were expecting back in the mid two thousands. So back then I was working in data centers, and if you're unfamiliar with the concept, data centers are where all the server infrastructure lives. It manages and runs the applications we use every day. So back then technology was a little bit more static and required a lot more management. Now what we were worried about was that we were running outta capacity in that we didn't have enough servers. We didn't have enough air conditioning to cool those servers. We also didn't have enough space to physically put those servers. We had all these capacity constraints and we were really concerned that we weren't gonna solve this problem. Didn't seem to have a very straightforward or easy solution, so we were a little panicked there. We couldn't rack mount servers fast enough in order to keep up with the demand for infrastructure to run the applications that we needed to run for our customers. So ultimately, what happened? Well, along the way, technology was invented around that timeframe, referred to as virtualization, which enabled us to go from. , the physical construct that was each server to creating this concept of a virtual server, which you may or may not be familiar with, which is basically like you can pull together the resources from the infrastructure, and then you can create virtual instances of the server. So from one physical server you can make. Theoretically an unlimited number of virtual servers. It really just depends on the amount of resources the server itself has, which enabled us to then consolidate the hardware and the infrastructure. And ultimately what this led to was a reversal of this trend of just consuming more resources and requiring expansion and.All this crazy investment and new building and construction and all that kind of stuff. It don't, it didn't just slow down. It actually reversed itself and data centers started to shrink. So what was wild was where we thought we were gonna be needing new buildings and stuff like that. We ended up having empty rows where servers used to beWe were able to literally take them out because we didn't need them anymore. The software was that efficient. It was an exponential improvement and an evolution technologically. So why am I telling you this story? . The point of this story was really about how teams change that were expected to manage all of this operation. The skills that were in demand previously, which was managing all of the hardware, ultimately became commoditized and fell out of favor, and in became a significantly higher demand for folks to better understand how to manage the software so we could figure out how to leverage these new tools and resources to the best of their capabilities. As such, the demand really shifted there in terms.  what we needed skills-wise and how those teams changed. Now, the reason why that's relevant is because I believe.  should. It provides a good example of something we're on the precipice of, again, which is the invention of new technology and a new wave that's about to change technical teams, that being AI with the invention of tools like chat, G p T from open ai now.Because of what these tools are capable of, it's going to eliminate significant bottlenecks in product development, in my opinion, and significantly speed up our ability to build features, create applications, even spin up entire companies. It's gonna be a real game changer, and that's gonna change how technical teams evolve. So whether your team is ready for it or not, these changes are coming and they're gonna make big changes to how product development is managed and what those teams look like. So you need to be ready. Free Email CourseHow to Build a Profitable AI-Powered B2B SaaS Business for Less Than $750Notes generated by Podcast Show Notes  (podcastshownotes.ai)

Jessica DeRose has a powerful story, and in our conversation, there are a lot of unique pieces you might find resonance with. Jess is clear that walking away from her secure career as a teacher wasn't courageous, it was necessary. As I listened to her share, she also clarified that, although her results are astounding, there were years of experience and effort that coalesced to make it all possible. Perhaps the key was walking away from the safety net and focusing on the next part of her path. Jessica has continued to find ways to evolve, even moving past her impressive role as a celebrity personal trainer, to find new ways to grow and give back. You need to hear her explain it, but her perspective on how your willingness to grow determines the growth of everything around you; is powerful. This episode is a first for the podcast, as Alison sits down with another psychotherapist to discuss their aligned mission to help others live a life that is fulfilled and lights them up. Tanya Cole-Lesnick is a former graphic designer that found herself pursuing a career in therapy after her own experience with a therapist changed her life. She has been a psychotherapist, social worker, and coach since 1995 and she is on fire with her passion to help others see the amazing power of therapy and doing the work to get to know every aspect of our inner selves.Through attending both individual and group therapy, Tanya found the life-changing effects of being vulnerable and connecting with other humans in our struggles. No matter the type of childhood or upbringing we experienced, we all learned and saved certain thoughts and beliefs that may not be serving us as adults, and we can walk around without even realizing that we are not aligned with our true and highest self. So often, we try to dismiss our true feelings, we talk negatively to ourselves and can default to people-pleasing tendencies that are not serving us. The key is to do the uncomfortable but necessary work of sitting with ourselves and learning who we truly are. In this episode, you will be inspired to take a deep look inside yourself and assess if you are living a life that is aligned with your values, wants, and needs. There is incredible power in getting real about what it is that's important to you, and also sharing your struggles with others that deserve to hear them. There is magic in sharing and in vulnerability, and that is what you will get in this episode. Alison and Tanya are both on a mission to change the face of mental health and they have a powerful message for you today.Key highlights:Tanya's background and why she decided to get a degree in social workHow to access and honor your truth and change the habits that don't serve youThe power that a group therapy session can have on someone's livesThe importance of vulnerability, discomfort, and honoring your feelings and needsBoundaries are important: Stop being “good” for everyone elseAlign your thoughts and feeling with who you want to beWe have been conditioned in our childhood so we all have stuff that needs healing, so rather than judging and pushing it away, get curious and explore itWhen we are aligned with ourselves, we can let go of things that are not aligned with us and know we are better offWhat a therapist should beTanya's advice to someone struggling with low self-esteemIf you are looking externally for fulfillment, you will not find it- The magic is inside you and on your journeyHow to connect with Tanya and join one of her group therapy settingsConnect with Tanya Cole-Lesnick:Instagram: @tanyathetherapistWebsite: tanyacole-lesnick.comConnect with Alison:Instagram: @alisonanswers | @lagercounselingWebsite: LagerCounseling.comYouTube: Alison AnswersFacebook: Alison Lager Lcsw Casac

We had the pleasure of interviewing Carly Rose over Zoom video.Ten years ago, a 13-year-old dazzled a panel of judges that included Britney Spears, Simon Cowell, Demi Lovato, and L.A. Reid, on the second season of Fox's The X Factor. She then went off to win the hearts of the world with her stunning cover of Karmin's “Brokenhearted” solidifying her place in pop culture history. The now 23-year-old Carly Rose is commemorating the 10th anniversary of the show and revisiting this time of her life with her grown-up interpretation of “Brokenhearted,” out today worldwide across all digital platforms. At age seven, Carly snagged a role in the Broadway production of Les Misérables, and began performing in theater, on TV and in films, and touring nationally. At 13, her instincts lead her to audition for The X Factor. Her intuition proved to be spot on. The little girl with the big voice made the cut, was a fan-favorite, and went on to become the runner-up, the youngest in the show's history. Following the conclusion of her run on The X-Factor, while still under the glare of the spotlight, Carly and her family made the decision for her to have a childhood away from the limelight. This gave her the freedom to pursue an education, and develop into a fully formed artist who approaches performing and songwriting with a level of focus and maturity well beyond her 23 years, amassing an impressive catalog of original music. For years Carly shied away from associating herself with the show, but it was the original X Factor fans, as well as the community that she cultivated on social media that encouraged her to embrace nostalgia and this part of her life. After posting a number of tongue-in-cheek TikTok videos referencing her time on the show, she came to see that people really cared and were genuinely interested. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Carly looks at this exercise, especially with the direction of the music video, as embracing this chapter of her story, and more importantly bringing a sense of joy to her fans. The video, directed by Claire Schmitt, gives a special nod to that very magical moment. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZbQMCFknS4c&feature=youtu.beWe want to hear from you! Greetings what's going on? Where we all at? Where am I at? Where's this all going?Had an unintended break from Lager Time last week (though there was actual Lager Time, as I was on a stag-doo on one of the days) a combination of a residential trip, in Brighton during the week; with a project that I work on with Dream Arts. Then, having to go back to London for the Easter weekend, meant there was no time for doing this. And as much as I'd like to convince both my wife, and myself; it's not a priority but maybe one day? Hit the subscribe if your down for the cause (it's just occurred to me, that since I started actively asking people to subscribe, like above, which is what all the smiley-how-to-do blogs tell me how-to-do, I've had barely any subscribers? Alas. Keep socking it to the man, that's what I say)So I've been sharing extracts from Make Your Own Bed and Hope for the Best, but as I said last time, that I might give it a rest for bit. I've been actively trying to follow through on things that I say I might do, so I'm doing it, or not doing it, more to the point. In my limited skill set, mystic would never be on that small list but clearly, I was able to predict my own future, without even realising it. For all the above reasons, as well as the taking a break reason, I won't be sharing anything from the show, this week. The main reason being, I've hit a problem with it, again.I've now re-written or edited two thirds of the show, which I've split into three-acts. Thinking I'd gone slim and trim with the words, I ran it all together yesterday and I'm already at an hour; with a whole third section to fit in. And music. And I'm now thinking, yet again, is this a load of shit? l'll keep ploughing through it, re-editing till I get to the end and then maybe it's about finally doing the funding app and getting some sort of script editor, or dramaturg, to come in an help me panel-beat it into shape. Failing not getting any dough, which is fairly likely, I'll have another re-think. Thing is, I get precious about some of those non-needed lines and background information. I can already hear some of those dreaded criticisms: is this really needed, Paul??? Yes. It is. Is this moving the story foreword, Paul? I like veering off. Life does that, all the time. This week I'd thought I'd share a few poems I've got kicking about; been slowly putting together a file of new bits and bobs, over the last couple of years. Maybe there's another book in it? Don't know yet, I'm just enjoying write them.  There's quite a few expletives in these ones, I don't tend to swear too much in my writing so I don't know what's happened here but they were more or less picked at random. Also, the tone on most of them is a bit pessimistic, which isn't always the case with me but to be honest, I'm not feeling all that great at the moment, so it's fitting. Don't know if it's season change, being skint, bit knackered maybe? Or all of them but I've felt better.Anyway, onwards and upwards, hopefully. But, it's not. A lot of it has old, historical choices that need to be cleaned-up. And, some formatting choices simply can't be persisted safely (such as CDN - Content-Delivery Network - domains). As such, I will always have to do some degree of pre-render processing on my persisted HTML content before I show it to the user. And, as of yesterday, I started performing that clean-up and sanitization using jSoup in ColdFusion 2021.https://www.bennadel.com/blog/4201-using-jsoup-to-clean-up-and-normalize-html-in-coldfusion-2021.htmBlog - Ben Nadel - Returning Permissions With My API Response Payloads In ColdFusionAt InVision, I work on a large AngularJS SPA (Single-Page Application) that is backed by a monolithic ColdFusion API. When the SPA initially loads, it is provided with as JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) payload about the user that is then used to render various Calls-To-Action (CTA) within the View Partials. Lately, however, I've been leaning heavily into returning permissions information right inside my partial API responses. This is proving to reduce the complexity of my view-logic while also making the views more flexible and the application more responsive to changes.https://www.bennadel.com/blog/4198-returning-permissions-with-my-api-response-payloads-in-coldfusion.htm Blog - Ben Nadel - Normalizing 0xA0 (No-Break Space) And Other Special Characters Within ColdFusion Form PostsYesterday, I was trying to clean-up some formatting in my comments data-table when I noticed that a lot of comments contained a funky character, . I looked this up in the Unicode Character Table and it turns out to be a No-Break Space. Apparently, some text-editors will just randomly inject this character? Well, I don't want this character in my comments. And, for that matter, I don't want other special characters like "smart quotes" and "bullets" either. As such, I took some time to make my ColdFusion form scope pre-processing a bit more robust in my ColdFusion 2021 blogging platform.https://www.bennadel.com/blog/4199-normalizing-0xa0-no-break-space-and-other-special-characters-within-coldfusion-form-posts.htmRelated tweet - https://twitter.com/BenNadel/status/1489960042157719556 Blog - Ben Nadel - Performing A Double-Check Lock Around "Run Once" Code In ColdFusionOne of the wonderful things about ColdFusion is that it comes with a fully-synchronized application setup workflow thanks to the onApplicationStart() life-cycle method in the Application.cfc ColdFusion application framework component. But, not all "setup" code can be run during the bootstrapping of the application. Some setup code needs to be run "on demand" later in the application lifetime. In such scenarios, I almost always reach for a double-check lock pattern of execution. This allows setup code to be synchronized with almost no locking overhead.https://www.bennadel.com/blog/4197-performing-a-double-check-lock-around-run-once-code-in-coldfusion.htm Tweet - Zac Spitzer - Links to related tests for tags and functions to the docsAs #lucee has lots of detailed tests, I figured it would be good to add a link to the related tests for tags and functions to the docsi.e. https://docs.lucee.org/reference/tags/zipparam.html https://github.com/lucee/lucee-docs/pull/1225  #cfmlhttps://twitter.com/zackster/status/1490333765633253385https://twitter.com/zacksterTweet - Shawn Holmes - I was interviewed in this Issuehttps://twitter.com/Hanzo55/status/1490101474377887744 https://twitter.com/Hanzo55Blog - James Moberg - ColdFusion CGI Scope is not Read-OnlyI've was been always under the impression that the ColdFusion CGI scope was "read-only".

Jesse Owens was ours. He was familiar. He was our chance to prove it. Settle the score. Win. He was the punchline to the joke of injustice. He was our graceful entrance. And our “Hi Haters!” Jesse-Owens-was-redemption. And, like so many of us who fight poverty, generational trauma, and thick-thick racism, Hitler didn't have anything for Jesse Owens - because he could already see victory before the race even began. Call it survival. Call it evolution. What the enemy planned for his downfall became the greatest victory of his life. Cue Koryn Hawthorne. Won't He Do it!Spiritual Warrior of the DayIn 1939, Jesse Owens was the most famous man on the planet. He "single-handedly crushed Hitler's myth of Aryan superiority" by pushing the limits of human capability and smashing world records. But today, we won't talk about gold medals. No. Instead, we will explore three very-real moral dilemmas in Owens' life that just may help us out in 2020. His life was complex. Rich with irony. Hard fought and often misguided. Scrappy. Not always honorable. And yet, we celebrate him - as a spiritual warrior - because he stayed in the race until the day he died. Through decades of shifting definitions of Blackness, he kept his eyes on doing his personal best. And for that, we draw a gritty brand of inspiration. Join GirlTrek’s Black History Bootcamp - The Prayer Edition at blackhistorybootcamp.com to receive specially curated emails with prayers, survival tips, speeches + dedicated songs to listen to for each episode. This is the episode I started this show to record. Truly, it is why I'm on this planet - to help other people heal from trauma and see their experiences as opportunities to align with their greater purpose. Even if you think you've never gone through anything "that bad", I promise that there's something for you to learn from this episode as you show yourself the love you need to validate your experiences. In this episode, I talk about:Why discussing trauma is importantTrauma isn't always what we thinkShowing compassion to each other and ourselves as we shift into a new paradigm Healing ourselves so we can heal othersWhy the saying "Time heals all wounds" is bullshit My experience with trauma and athletics, how I'm just healing it nowHealing old patterns by going back to when they happenedSetting boundaries respectfully Inner child work and how simple but powerful it can beWe cover so much ground in this episode and I hope it brings you the healing you need. My goal is for this show to feel like you're talking to a friend on your couch. I hope it brings you the comfort and peace that I feel when sharing. If you need meditation guidance, check out my profile on Insight Timer and follow along.

Here to Thrive: Tips for a Happier Life | Self Help | Spirituality | Personal Development

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 28, 2016 20:11

www.thrive.how/podcast3 In this episode I've answered an audience member's question - How do we let ourselves "be" in a culture that is telling us that we are not enough. We live in a culture that constantly tells us that we are not enough. How do we approach personal growth from a place of being enough without that being a contradiction?I coach using positive psychology and mixing that with a touch of spirituality. I was drawn to positive psychology because it focuses on our strengths and what is good about us, rather than needing "fixing" us. It comes from a place of us all already being enough, and I believe we flourish more when we play to our strengths. If you want to improve, first recognize your inherent worthiness. You don't need to "fix" yourself. This is a mindset and a way to approach the world. We are all worthy, and each and every one of us is as worthy as another. Because you went through a tough time doesn't make you any less worthy. We must start with believing this and working on our self worth. Before you start on any journey of self-discovery or growth, start with recognizing your worthiness:3 Exercises I suggest:- Write a list of all of your strengths (What are you good at? What are your character strengths)- Ask people close to you what they perceive as 3 strengths you have- Write yourself a Love Note Know that you are Right Where You Are Supposed to BeWe are where we are supposed to be. I think it is psychologically healthy to have faith and believe in something bigger than yourself. In my opinion life is a journey and we are each sent lessons. Life is about navigating these lessons and growing.Be self-compassionate. Be kind to yourself. Treat yourself like you would your own best friend. How we speak to ourselves matters. Do your best to be aware of when you talk to yourself unkindly, and try to override that negative self-talk.Recognize that there is no behind when it comes to personal growth. We all grow at the pace that we are ready to. You're not racing anyone. We are all walking our own paths, and comparison is irrelevant. You should have no other goal than being better than you were yesterday.* To Do: MantraWrite a positive note, message or affirmation that you will see a couple.e.g. - I am exactly where I am supposed to be. Do what feels right for you - there is no one size fits all to personal growthSociety sells to us constantly that we are lacking. People want to us to believe that we are broken and can be fixed. But there isn't one set path to living a beautiful life. We are so unique. Don't fall into the trap of there being one Guru, or one Path to the good life.Your growth needs to be driven from you. A coach can help, but the reality is that change can only ever come from you. I can't write a program to help you grow if you aren't willing to do the work. So you must follow what calls to you. So trust your gut, and do what interests you when it comes to personal growth.* To Do:Start your personal development and growth purely through trusting your gut. You have to enjoy the journey, otherwise you won't stick with it. I believe that if you really want to learn about yourself, grow and development, then you will always be driven to the things you need to help you do just that. Trust this.
