Reflections On a Year of New Challenges and Growth | Extracting the Value from Life Lessons Learned Often we can recognize the change we experience in our growth journey, if it's' a result of a massive life event. All to say, our personal growth is often incremental and the byproduct of small, seemingly insignificant interactions over time. The changes the we experience in our beliefs, values, and ideas about the world can catch, even the most reflective of us, by surprise. #education #yearinreview #growthmindset #growth 0:00 - 2:30 - Intro 2:30 - 12:30 - How Have I Grown this Year? 12:30 - Wrap Up So how do highlight how the last few months have contributed to our evolving sense of self? When was the last time we put into words who we are and who we see ourselves becoming? To what extent are each of us committed to ensuring that however these experiences unfold, that we stay in alignment with our highest selves during the process? We all have the opportunity to celebrate and participate in the person we are becoming, making active decisions that support our intellectual, social, and spiritual well-being. As this year starts closing off, let's think about how we can unleash the potential for greatness that we each carry. #education #yearinreview #growthmindset #growth Any questions? Over a 29-year coaching career, his teams won a record 88 consecutive games, and he was voted coach of the year on 7 occasions. As a player he was names a collegiate All American on 3 occasions and was the first person to be enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame as a player and coach. He is one of the most revered coaches in history and is by far the coach mentioned most by the Great Coaches we have interviewed. John Wooden wrote 13 books on coaching and leadership; but it is his opus from 2005, the Pyramid of Success through which he has become internationally recognized. In that book he lays out his key principles to leadership and success in life. Unfortunately Coach Wooden passed away in 2010 at the age of 99. However, he left so much rich material behind that we are going to recreate a posthumous interview with him. Much of the footage of him is copyrighted and so not able to be reproduced without a lot of cost and bureaucracy, so we have ordered his words around key coaching and leadership themes hired an actor to read those words. In this episode, Susan and Sinéad do a deep dive into one of Susan's 'soul book's - Diana Wynne Jones' classic Charmed Life. Come with us as we discuss the issues of power and responsibility the novel deals with, as well as a very serious scholarly debate about who is more of a 'peacock' - Chrestomanci or Wizard Howl - and an appreciation for Gwendolen Chant, the most unapologetically evil character in children's literature. We discuss the idea of multiple worlds and the mechanics of travelling between them, and how important it is for Cat, the book's protagonist, to finally step into his own potential, and we share a little about how the masterful Diana Wynne Jones has influenced both of us as writers and as people.Referenced in the episode is the work of:Aishwara Subramanian: "'So Would You Mind Telling Me Where I Am? Today we start a new series of quotes where I will be going through John Wooden's Pyramid of Success. Since my company and website are called SlamDunk Success, I thought it would be a good idea to do a series on the concept of success. I can think of no greater guide to success than Wooden's Pyramid of Success. For the first two-thirds of my coaching career, I did not follow or study John Wooden nearly enough. In the last third of it, however, I have become a huge fan and fairly voracious student of his. I used the Pyramid of Success with my varsity basketball team in the 2011-12 season. We went through discussions of the different building blocks of the Pyramid throughout that season, which culminated in a trip to the state tournament, the first time a boys' basketball team at that school had made it to the state tournament since 1996. While I won't say that we made it to the tournament solely because we worked through the Pyramid of Success, I will say that it was a big part of our season, and I believe it guided us towards our success.Today is an introduction to the series, and I talk about a few quotes that will really help lay the foundation for the series and for Wooden's ideas on success. In the coming weeks, I will cover each building block in the Pyramid and talk about quotes that support each of those blocks. I think you will find this to be a truly rewarding series. To help guide me through this series, I am using the documents that I created for my team in 2011-12 to use for our discussions before and after practice, as well as the following books :They Call Me Coach - John Wooden with Jack TobinCoach Wooden's Pyramid of Success - John Wooden with Jay CartyWooden: A Lifetime of Observations and Reflections On and Off the Court - John Wooden with Steve Jamison

He also won the Ellsworth Smith International Trumpet Competition in 2012. He's only the second American to do so in its history.I highly recommend getting in touch with Ryan if you're seeking insights into performance preparation, life as a professional musician, or any other topic. He is generous with his time and expertise. We Cover:Ryan's musical family and upbringing. The moment where Ryan decided that music was what he wanted to do with his life. The importance of having a mentor and support in the college prep process. How the person who sold Ryan his C Trumpet ended up contacting his future undergrad studio teacher, setting the stage for Ryan's music school experience. How Ryan auditioned very late in the college admissions process and still landed a scholarship that helped him to afford college. How Ryan chose a graduate program that aligned with his career goals. How attending Masterclass Series introduced Ryan to music school faculty and helped his admissions process months later. How Ryan would build his college audition repertoire list. How he learns a new composition and the importance of building good habits from the first practice session.Finding purpose in practice.Developing a blueprint/concept for the composition you are preparing through a teacher and using that input to develop your own voice.Injecting variables into your performance preparation and how that can help your audition.Framing your expectations so you are focusing on your personal growth as opposed to an arbitrary goal.3 of Ryan's favorite recordings. Links Mentioned:John Wooden: A Lifetime of Observations and Reflections On and Off the CourtSinatra at the Sands with Count Basie Orchestra.Incubus: Morning ViewCarlos Kleiber conducts Strauss, Rosenkavalier.Porcupine Tree: The Incident.Ryan on Hard Work vs. Talent. Connect with The Scholarship Roadmap:WebsiteApple PodcastsInstagramFacebookYouTubeBook A Call With Me (no commitment, no charge.) Theme Music:‘Elegua' from Axiom Asunder by The Majestic Jazz OrchestraComposed by Buzz Jones.

ESPN NCAA Basketball Commentator and Comedian Noah Savage joins the show to talk about all things fitness and his goal of getting back down to 250. As a former D1 college and professional basketball player, Noah is no stranger to hard work and fitness, but the unique demands of his THREE jobs and being a normal human being in NYC has made getting back down to his ideal weight a challenge. While Noah is busy excelling at multiple disciplines, he sits down to inquire about Ken's approach to fitness to find out if adopting a new approach to training and nutrition will result in reaching his goal. The two former roommates talk through Noah's past fitness setbacks, his take on fad diets, historic experience with a Keto diet, his most recent scare with Rhabdomyolysis and why Guinness is the new diet beer! The two talk Ken's approach to weight lifting, nutrition, the need to lean in on things you can get excited about and why if it doesn't make common sense it's probably not worth doing. From the conversation the Savage 250 Weight Loss challenge is born. Noah commits to replicating Ken's workout approach for 10 weeks to see if it's truly just a matter of approach, or it's more a case of nature than nurture. A bit more free form, but a whole lot of fun! Mentioned In the Show:  Books:  Wooden: A Lifetime of Observations and Reflections On and Off the Court. Episode 2 carries on with some fairy tale motifs, as we explore another favourite: Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones. Some people may know this title because of the Studio Ghibli animated film of the same name, but trust us—watching the film is no substitute for reading this fantastic book. As always, spoiler warning! Read first, listen after. :)Show Notes:If you'd like to learn more about Diana Wynne Jones than we provided in our cursory intro, there is a wonderful collection of her autobiographical writings called Reflections: On the Magic of Writing. These papers were selected by Diana Wynne Jones herself and published posthumously. The book blog that we mention, things mean a lot, hasn't been updated since 2017, but the archives have some excellent reviews and recommendations. Check it out! What is a Pentstemmon? Well, as it turns out, nothing. However a penstemon is a flower, also known as a beardtongue. Make of that what you will. Here is a link to the full text of John Donne's "Song", in case you want to check out the misogynistic third verse for yourself. Not mentioned in the episode, but Folio Society recently published a glorious illustrated edition of Howl's Moving Castle, and last year they held a contest to find an illustrator. Here are some of the stunning submissions. Which are your faves? Thanks to Rob Muir for the theme song, original intro music, and all things audio!

Habits 2 Goals: The Habit Factor® Podcast with Martin Grunburg | Goal Achievement, Productivity & Success – Simplified

"Success is peace of mind, which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you made the effort to do your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming." ~Coach John Wooden What is success? How do you define it? Henry and Martin get DEEP into the subject of SUCCESS. What is it really? And, crazier still, how do YOU define it!? Don't think it's important? This about this: It's a given that 100% of people want to become a “success”. Yet, the large majority of people haven’t even taken the time to define what success means. Do you have your own definition of success? Have you refined it and studied it? Remember, it's very difficult to hit a target that you can’t see! SEE John Wooden "The Wizard of Westwood" and his success pyramid. FREE DOWNLOAD  Other definitions of success are explored: Earl Nightingale's "Success is the progressive realization of a worthy ideal." And, Thoreau's "If one advances confidently in the direction of their dreams and endeavors to live the life they imagine, they will meet with a success in common hours." It took Coach Wooden many years to find his correct formula. In 1934 he decided on the cornerstones, Industriousness and Enthusiasm, the two most important building blocks of the pyramid. Completing the foundation of the Pyramid are Friendship, Loyalty and Cooperation. As the years went by, Coach Wooden built his Pyramid upon 14 building blocks of essential virtues (habits), leading to the apex, the final, 15th building block - Competitive Greatness. On both sides of the Pyramid, in essence holding it together, are 10 words, including Ambition, Honesty and Integrity, once again all leading to the top, where Faith and Patience watch over Competitive Greatness. Coach Wooden completed his 'Pyramid of Success' in the spring of 1948, and the original Pyramid drawing was on his office wall after he accepted the men's basketball head coaching position at UCLA that same spring. Some classic Wooden quotes: "The best way to improve the team is to improve ourself." "Goals achieved with little effort are seldom worthwhile or lasting." "As long as you try your best, you are never a failure. That is, unless you blame others." "Much can be accomplished by teamwork when no one is concerned about who gets the credit."
