Hey friend! Just dropping a BONUS EPISODE for you all this awesome Thursday! We are here today to talk about Mind-Body Connection, specifically how this might be beneficial when it comes to exercise. On this podcast, we talk a lot about biofeedback when it comes to the food-body connection which is why I am so excited to expand this conversation today to exercise. I am stoked for several reasons… I am in an exceptionally awesome mood today because I get to record this bonus episode for you all, it was a rainy cozy morning, and I have been trying something new lately that I am really feeling the benefits of this morning. A couple of weeks ago I started replacing my second cup of morning coffee with a new nootropic beverage. If y'all don't know what nootropics are… in short they are cognitive enhancers. Coffee in fact is a nootropic. But in this case, I have added Magic Mind to my morning routine I have some extra energy today! Magic Mind contains Matcha which is a great anti-inflammatory agent. It also contains L-theanine which reduces stress. These compounds work together to prevent the spike in cortisol levels and the inevitable crash that comes from ingesting too much caffeine. #guilty It also has my two favorite adaptogens: Ashwagandha and Lion's mane. If you want to try this out my friends over at Magic Mind are giving us 20% off. Head on over to https://www.magicmind.co/fha and be sure to enter "FHA20" to get your extra 20% off. I am excited to have Kim Payne back on the show! Just a little bit about Kim— she is a wife, girl-mom, and mama of the most active dog in New Mexico (literally, Nike has the most steps in Albuquerque). She specializes in the treatment of eating disorders, has her master's degree in Applied Sports Psychology, is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor and currently pursuing her PhD in Clinical Counseling and Supervision. Kim is a wealth of knowledge. Get ready for a treat today as we chat about enhancing your relationship with exercise. To connect with Kim reach out to her at kimpaynetherapy@gmail.com. Cheers friends, and happy moving! Jess

TBP 189 :: Lucie Hanes- Running and Climbing and Eating Disorder Recovery Lucie Hanes is a 27-year-old climbing coach out of Eagle, Colorado, who is pursuing her Master's of Science in Applied Sports Psychology. I met Lucie in the Wicked Cave in Rifle last summer, and the next time I heard from her was when she reached out via email in response to the episode I did with Matt Pincus about running and climbing. In that episode, Matt and I basically conclude that running isn't going to help your climbing, and that it may in fact hinder it. And that there are other more effective ways to train endurance for climbing. Lucie emailed me to say that she was not only a high performing climber (having sent numerous 5.13's), but also a high performing ultra runner. She wanted to tell the story of how it's possible to do both sports well as a counter to my episode with Matt. Lucie is incredibly passionate about both of her sports, and my conversation with her ended up being even more enlightening than I thought it would be because it turns out she's also in recovery from an eating disorder. And she's very open about it, so a lot of our conversation ended up being about body image, disordered eating behaviors, her health consequences of underfueling, and how she's recovering from all of it. While she does provide details about her training for both running and climbing – and how she does both at the same time – I want to stress that this is not necessarily something that all humans can imitate without negative consequences. Lucie will admit herself that she may be an outlier, and she also concludes at the end of our talk that running may be inhibiting her climbing abilities and vice versa. So this is NOT an episode wherein we are wholeheartedly advocating for people to train for running and climbing at the same time, and do it with the gusto that Lucie has. I honestly considered not publishing this episode because I knew it would be triggering for some people. But after a lot of thought, I decided that this episode could be very helpful for people who struggle with disordered eating and over-exercising behaviors. Lucie is finding that she is healthier and happier now that she's eating properly to fuel all of the exercise she does, and that is the lesson I want everyone to hear. I want to thank Lucie for her willingness to talk about difficult things; Her vulnerability is invaluable to us all. I very much enjoyed this talk with her, and I felt super connected to her during it. I wish she lived closer to me so we could hang out, honestly. If you'd like to work with Lucie, you can find her at www.insideoutathlete.com, where she consults with athletes on mental strength coaching in sport & performance. We all use self talk in some form or fashion. This is especially true for athletes. They are seen muttering to themselves after plays, analyzing what they did wrong, or even trying to hype themselves for a big game or play. What exactly is self talk and does it really help?In this episode, we look at three published studies from the Journal of Applied Sports Psychology (all cited below) that look into self talk. Will we find that self talk helps? Can we utilize negative self talk to our advantage? We will even see a comparison of self talk to other ways that athlete's attempt to improve performance such as the utilization of caffeine or the mysticism of that lucky article of clothing.Studies Cited:Cooper, K. In this week's episode we chat with Darren Kruisselbrink, a Professor of Motor Learning and Applied Sports Psychology at Acadia University in Nova Scotia. We cover a lot in this week's episode including Darren's unique combination of Applied Sports Psych and Motor Learning, what is required to learn from a psychological perspective, what is expertise and what are the common features in the background of experts. We then go into how we can apply these ideas in invasion sports such as hockey. The episodes where we explore the psychological side of sports and how we can better use that knowledge in our coaching are always interesting and this one is no different. Darren mentions several resources in this week's episode including: Duckworth, A.L., Eichstaedt, J.C., & Ungar, L.H. (2015). The mechanics of human achievement. If you are not helping your players on this aspect of the game then you are only partially doing your job. As a former professional player himself Rick finds more satisfaction helping others achieve their dreams than he did in his own competitive career. Long intrigued by the fact that physical skills were rarely the determining factor in athletic success. He took ACTION He didn’t just think about improving his coaching. He made it happen. He studied the mental and emotional skills that make or break a performance. Rick has a Doctorate Degree in Applied Sports Psychology; he is also a Certified Mind Factor Coach. A high school football injury directed Rick toward the sport of golf, and what he's learned since has truly been life-altering. In a competitive playoff for the right to join his college golf team as a walk-on, as he describes it, he "choked" under pressure. It was that "failure" that became a formative life experience and sent Rick toward the study of peak performance strategies. Today Rick is a sought-after peak-performance coach who trains aspiring professionals and helps corporate executives apply his many strategies and insights on peak performance, leadership and teamwork. In this episode, Rick shares: How to re-write your story to serve your ambitions Physiological influences of performance Why and how love (passion) is a critical component for peak performance His strategy for the golf-course "workshop" with executive teams! How his workshop reveals so much about decision making, leadership and communication How he applies The Habit Factor in his training to carry his clients beyond just the mental game, and how that was a breakthrough How he defines "success" How appreciating your life's "roles" helps you create greater attention and mindfulness How to get a little better every day And, so much more... “It's the exercise and the process behind it -- how did they come to the decisions as a team and what happens when someone played poorly? Did they react and judge them?" Why could I not perform under the pressure, when it mattered most. Yet, when I put some of those mental and emotional skills and trained them, I was able to perform at a high level afterwards..." “I'm a BIG believer that leadership starts with the individual, not with the team. You have to be able to lead yourself first before you can lead anyone else." ---------------------------------------------------- Subscribe Don't miss a single episode. Rick is a Member of the PGA, Doctor of Applied Sports Psychology, author of Golf, The Ultimate Mind Game, Instructional Editor of Golf Tips Magazine and he stops by to share some of his keys to think your way around the course in the most efficient way possible. Episode Highlights Pressure means different things for different people. So don't get psyched out when you see someone drain a put for a million bucks on TV when you still struggle to make consecutive pars. Awareness is a key component to learning the mental game. If you’re aware of your thoughts and how you’re reacting in specific situations that’s half the battle. Be fair to yourself. If you hit a great shot, let yourself celebrate! Even if it’s just internally, take a second to give yourself props. You know that you will beat yourself up over every bad shot so let’s make sure we’re as balanced as possible. Focus on what’s in your control, then think about cause and effect. It’s not always the mental game, sometimes it’s a bad swing! If you can free yourself and just react to a target you can get some fantastic results – Try looking at the hole while you’re putting (just like Jordan Spieth). You can't give kids self-confidence, because it becomes a false sense of security. Move from 'other-confidence' to 'self-confidence.' Mental Peak Performance for Coaches Most youth sports coaches don't have any training - Define your philosophy and set goals Coaches - are you putting pressure on young athletes to meet your expectations? What are these expectations - is one of them for them not to make any mistakes? Instead of putting expectations on the athletes - focus more on letting the kid know you believe in them and are excited to see them be great. When a kid makes a mistake during a game - leave them in, and then address it in practice, at halftime, or some later point. 'Games are a reward for all the hard work they put in during practice.' Mental Peak Performance for Parents Huge Idea #1 Accentuate the self in self-confidence. You can't give kids self-confidence, because it becomes a false sense of security. Move from 'other-confidence' to 'self-confidence.' The athlete has to think they can do it, regardless of what the parents and coaches tell them. Mental Peak Performance for Athletes Focus on your strengths. Rely on practice, put in extra reps. Focus on past successes. Visualize very specifically what success is going to look like during a tryout/game Pre-game and Post-game tips for coaches Huge Idea #2 Discuss with your athletes: During games - it's time to be done practicing. Go out and enjoy the game. Play free. Simplify things. Get the athlete to be thinking about images and feelings, not mechanics. Inspiring Story A racer saw himself as a top 5 racer, but not the top racer. He was limited by his own expectations and beliefs. Winning If you focus on executing your best in the moment, the winning usually takes care of itself At younger ages, the focus should be: developing skills, developing confidence, how to work with teammates, how to take instruction, how to manage mistakes The One that Got Away Dr. Cohn focuses on not letting the sport define you. You a person first and foremost, sports does not define you.
