As a military veteran or first responder, you need to be planning and implementing strategies to prepare for your transition into civilian life. In this episode of the Transition Drill Podcast, former Navy Search and Rescue (SAR) swimmer, Kat Apostolina, reflects on the mental and physical challenges of her military training and career. Despite being the sole female in a class of 20, she graduated with just six others, proving that mental resilience was key to success. In her 7 years of service, she had deployments to Afghanistan and Kuwait. An injury sustained during a training exercise ultimately led to her departure from the Navy, but she channeled her passion for fitness, not just to avoid surgery, but into a new career as a personal trainer, leveraging her military experience and a degree in sports psychology. Based in San Diego, she offers personalized functional fitness training, emphasizing the mental aspect of physical health. Her advice to veterans transitioning out of the military is to proactively engage with the VA for support and to use their benefits, such as the GI Bill, to pursue education or certifications that can open new career paths. Her journey from SAR swimmer to fitness trainer illustrates the power of adaptability and the importance of mental strength in overcoming life's obstacles. In this episode of The Real ResQ, host Jason Quinn is joined by Will Johnson, a U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) Pilot. Johnson grew up in Central Valley California. At 12 years old, he started hanging around the fire department next to his school.  This is where his passion for Search and Rescue (SAR) began to develop.   Wanting to be a pilot, Johnson applied to the USCG Academy but was denied, twice.  He applied to Officer Candidate School (OCS) and was picked up. Still dreaming of being a pilot, he applied and was denied for flight school. However, Johnson wanted to fly and he wasn't going to take “NO” for an answer. The first SAR case that Johnson remembers as a Pilot In Command (PIC) is going out for a standard search.  It was a great learning experience as a PIC, making sure he delegated the right job to the right person in the crew. The next few rescues that stand out to Johnson were amazing.  He tells us about a time when three people were in the water and he only had enough fuel to be on scene for five minutes! Then we talk about a rescue of an F15 fighter pilot who had to eject out of his plane when it malfunctioned.  Our next rescue story earned him a Letter of Commendation while he was stationed in North Bend (Coos Bay), Oregon.  Another rescue “attempt” while he was in North Bend was for an injured firefighter in the mountains.  The last rescue Johnson tells us about was a MEDEVAC to a remote island in Alaska. Welcome to another amazing episode of the podcast. We delve into the life, the struggles, and the triumphs of a veteran. This is the story of Kevin Gilley, a Navy veteran who served his country with pride and honor, but faced a battle of a different kind when he returned home.   Kevin grew up dreaming of becoming a firefighter, a dream he pursued from his high school days. Many firefighters he knew had served in the military, which gave them an extra advantage when applying for firefighter roles. This inspired Kevin to join the Navy right after high school, with the intention to gain the extra points for his firefighting career.   In the Navy, Kevin initially signed up as a damage controlman, focusing on firefighting, but later switched to being a corpsman due to better advancement opportunities. He served as part of the Search and Rescue (SAR) team. He served two tours in Iraq and spent seven months in Indonesia for humanitarian assistance as part of Operation Unified Assistance following a devastating tsunami.   After his four-year service, Kevin left the Navy to pursue his dream of becoming a firefighter. However, he began to struggle with anxiety, nightmares, and untreated PTS, which led him to alcohol as a coping mechanism. His struggles with alcoholism and PTS had a significant impact on his life post-Navy, leading to a series of personal and professional challenges. Including a couple stints in prison and a period of living homeless on the streets of Las Vegas.   Kevin's story is a stark reminder of the unseen battles military members often face. It's a call to action for us to support veterans, to understand their struggles, and to help them find the resources they need. It's also a testament to the human spirit's ability to overcome adversity. To all military members out there, know that you're not alone. There are resources and communities ready to stand with you. And remember, it's okay to ask for help. Your strength is not defined by your struggles, but by your ability to overcome them.   PODCAST - LISTEN, WATCH, AND SUBSCRIBE  https://linktr.ee/TransitionDrillPodcast   CONNECT WITH KEVIN: https://www.instagram.com/two8ninemedia/ Kevgill2203@yahoo.com

Are some people simply more cut out to take on big responsibilities, where lives are at stake, or is it actually just good training? In this episode of Looking Outside, we explore the mindset and skills of preparedness in Flying with commercial airline pilot, Ricardo Nunes. Being responsible for hundreds of people on the plane is not something Ricardo takes for granted. While many of us would find that extreme level of responsibility crippling, Ricardo says the confidence comes from understanding the weight of the responsibility, and taking that seriously by training for the worst. Ricardo describes how preparation has been pivotal to surviving challenges faced in his aviation career and prior to that, before he crossed to ‘the dark side', when he flew Search and Rescue helicopters for the Portuguese Air Force. It's all in the training, Ricardo stresses, as while the scenarios faced are different, the way to think through them is the same.Jo and Ricardo also explore the intersection of flying and foresight, in how anticipatory thinking allows you to ‘fly ahead of the plane'. Explaining that the mindset is similar in the military as in foresight, particularly in leveraging methods like scenario planning, Ricardo says constantly testing out different pathways in flight means he is prepared for unforeseen situations so that when a tough decision has to be made, its already been thought-through.While the life of a pilot may seem both illustrious and solitary, the success of the airline industry and its crew is entirely dependent on being humble and highly communicative. Ricardo explains how airlines strictly follow a “just culture”; where decisions, omissions and actions are reported or called out without reprimand. It is only by showing, not hiding, mistakes that the airline industry maintains a culture of trust and builds on knowledge that leads to its incredible safety record. Ricardo also speaks to how this kind of approach in pushing yourself into complex and challenging situations, and consistently training for them, makes you a better person … one who is less prone to panic in the moment, and one who can enjoy a unique life (for example, where you get the travel the world). Train hard and fight easy, as they say in the military.--To look outside, Ricardo says to talk to someone different; someone who doesn't do what you do for a living or doesn't think the same way. Sometimes you need an outsider view to help you think outside the box. --Ricardo Nunes is a former Portuguese Air Force pilot turned commercial airline pilot with a passion for foresight and scenario planning. Ricardo began his career in 2005 in the Portuguese Air Force, where he flew various fixed and rotary-wing aircraft, including the DHC-1 Chipmunk, TB-30 Epsilon, Allouette 3, and EH101 Merlin. He flew numerous Search and Rescue (SAR) missions, eventually becoming a SAR captain in 2011.In 2013, Ricardo transitioned to the civilian world, where he now logs thousands of flight hours aboard Airbus A320/321 aircraft, connecting Lisbon to destinations in Europe, Africa, and the Americas with over 5,000 flight hours under his belt. But flying is not Ricardo's only passion. He is also a founding member of the Portuguese Foresight Association, a non-profit organization established by like-minded individuals to promote foresight and future studies in Portuguese society. Despite his busy schedule, Ricardo remains true to his Lisbon roots, where he was born and raised. He holds a Master of Science in Air Transport Management from City, University of London, and post-graduates degrees in Foresight, Strategy, and Innovation from the Lisbon School of Economics (ISEG), and in Management from the NOVA School of Business and Economics. They do things every day as a matter of course that most of us would take a hard-pass on every time. Thank God for their skill and courage. Sticks describes how they almost went in the water at night - and it was so bad that the captain of the boat they were getting ready to rescue someone from called and asked if they were OK. It sounds like it was an impressive airshow! Sticks talks CRM (Crew Resource Management) and we get to hear some actual communications between him and his rescue swimmer and flight mechanic. CHC Helicopter today announced it has successfully completed a trial collaboration with Priority 1 Air Rescue to deliver ground-breaking Virtual Reality (‘VR') training for its Search and Rescue (‘SAR') technical crew members. The trial involved winch operators from CHC's operations in Ireland. With the trial successfully completed, CHC will roll out Priority 1's VR training for all new Winch Operators – starting in Ireland, with a view to it being adopted in other markets worldwide. The investment demonstrates CHC's dedication to delivering industry leading safety standards. Virtual Reality training for Search and Rescue technical crews Adopting next generation VR simulations for training enables CHC's technical crew members to prepare and practice emergency procedures for a variety of challenging SAR events in a safe, controlled and realistic environment; including procedures that couldn't be practiced in a live aircraft. This innovative method is the first of its kind to be accepted by the European Aviation Safety Agency (‘EASA') and Irish Aviation Authority (‘IAA'), representing a unique development in the provision of safe, effective and reliable helicopter services globally. Guided by third party experts at Priority 1's state of the art training facility, CHC's technical crews can perform and redo winch operation procedures in mock cabins and a range of weather conditions until perfected. They can also practice for emerging sectors in a realistic way, such as supporting Offshore Wind platforms. Rob Tatten, Country Manager, CHC Ireland said: “Safety is at the heart of CHC's global operations. Our mission is to keep our people and passengers safe as we travel to remote and challenging destinations. We are delighted with how the trial performed and are excited to roll the programme out more widely. “Our technical crews must be properly prepared to perform emergency procedures and deal with challenging circumstances. This ground-breaking partnership with Priority 1 allows our crew members to repeatedly practice managing complex situations in a realistic but safe environment, ensuring they are fully equipped to act quickly and effectively in real world SAR events.” Steve Barreau, Chief Operating Officer Priority 1 Air Rescue France, added: “Our SAR training courses have been developed and designed with industry partners to equip them with the skills and abilities to perform optimally in any circumstances. Our Advanced Aircrew Mission Simulators (AAMS) are perfect for this type of realistic Search and Rescue training, and particularly for events that can't be practised in reality. It has been fantastic to see CHC Ireland crews making full use of our facilities to further their skills and practice complex procedures.” Implementing this new form of VR training also supports CHC's sustainability commitments by allowing training to be completed in a reduced time period of just eight weeks, compared to the industry standard of nine months. Richard N1RBD's ham radio journey began when I joined a wilderness Search and Rescue (SAR) team which uses HTs for communications during call-outs. He does a lot of hiking and backpacking in the North Georgia Mountains and on the Appalachian Trail, so he felt his knowledge of the area could be helpful. He activated a few SOTA summits with VHF, and was amazed at how far he could get from the summit of a 3000ft mountain running 5 watts. He then discovered Parks on the Air (POTA). Living 7 minutes from a POTA park, he tried some VHF activations with no success. Apparently, there is a huge difference between getting 4 QSOs from a summit vs 10 QSOs from a low-lying park when running VHF! He started his CW journey in January of 2020 using online resources and apps. We all feel fear. Many of us (even those you least expect) live with it as a daily companion. What we do with it is the difference between freezing – the bunny in the headlights – without the ability to move or adapt. Or proactively seeking fear as one of nature’s best tools to sharpen our ability to influence. So how do you feel it and still stay present – stay able to master your inner landscape - despite the adrenaline running a thousand miles an hour?In todays Interview we dive into the world of mastering fear with the extraordinary - Brandon Webb.Brandon is a former US Navy SEAL sniper, New York Times bestselling author, Experimental aircraft pilot, and Entrepreneur. After leaving home at age sixteen – he joined the US Navy to become a Navy SEAL. His first permanent assignment was as a helicopter Aircrew Search & Rescue (SAR) swimmer - and Aviation Warfare Systems Operator. As a SEAL Brandon completed four deployments to the Middle East.He also received numerous distinguished service awards - including the Presidential Unit Citation (awarded to him by President George W. Bush), and the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation medal with “V” device for valour in combat. After ending his Navy career early after over a decade of service – he went on to embark on an entrepreneurial journey that – first time out of the gate – literally resulted in him losing everything. Undeterred - He went on to found Hurricane Media - a fast growing military focused digital content network - which is today valued at over $100 Million dollars.Yet… and yet… what peaked my interest in Brandon at first wasn’t his incredible journey – but in reading a preview chapter I had been sent on his latest book ‘Mastering Fear – A Navy SEALS Guide’. In which he talks first about trying to teach his best friend Kamal to swim.Helping a close friend through a crippling fear that had been with them for a lifetime – which he did successfully in one week - set about a process where he decided to break down everything he had learned about mastering fear. Both as a SEAL’s – and in his own entrepreneurial journey – at the crux of it was this quote from the book:‘it’s not about becoming physically stronger, or tougher, or more aggressive. It is about learning how to identify and change the conversation in your head. Every battle, triumph, the defeat you have ever had - first took place in your mind.’In today's podcast we cover off…● The importance of ‘keeping the sharks out of your head’● This difference between mastering fear vs overcoming fear – PIVOTAL ‘if you see fear as the enemy, then you’ve already lost’● A simple model to switch the mental switch on fear – Known as the ‘SEALS secret weapon’.● How do use the ‘charge’ from fear to sharpen ourselves – most successful people I know literally move towards that charge when they feel it● The practice of drown proofing – and why it’s essential to replacing fear with a sense of clarity – knowing that you’ve already mentally faced the worseAnd why – in the words of Mike Tyson – “everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth”.If you’ve ever heard the quote “What would you do right now if you were not afraid?” – it’s one of my favorites - after listening to this interview I dare you to not change it (as I did) to “What would I do right now if I focused this fear?” So... grab yourself that coffee – Red Bull – or whatever your caffeine of choice – nothing like facing fear with a healthy shot of adrenaline. And get ready to journey inside one of the most ‘misunderstood’ and underutilized parts of the human condition.Enjoy my conversation with the incredible Brandon Webb. Ep. 87 Matt Grace: Former Navy Rescue Swimmer and Firefighter on Discipline, PTS, and Beauty From Heaven Matt Grace spent his childhood years growing up in Hawaii. While many would consider this a dream come true, Matt had an experience in the ocean while living there which changed the course of his life forever. In his early years, unrest at home caused Matt to move constantly living in several different places across the United States. All the while he felt a yearning to be back "home" on the islands of Hawaii.  He found his way back by joining the Navy. Over a twenty year career with the Navy, Matt spent time working as a Navy Firefighter and eventually worked his way into the elite ranks of the Navy Search and Rescue (SAR) swimmers.  Even before his time ended in the Navy, Post-Traumatic Stress (PTS) began to have a massive impact on his life. It all culminated in an event that Matt shares for the first time publicly in today's interview. This event was the spark he needed to finally take control of his PTS and begin a journey of personal growth to save his life and the lives of others around him.  Now he uses his experiences in the military, his Master Practitioner of NLP training, and his triumph over PTS to help each person he works with "release their hero," through his work with his company H3RO FIT. In today's interview Matt will discuss:  The most intense battle he ever faced with PTS, which wasn't on the battlefield, and how began his path to self-healing The one book that changed everything for him The top lessons he learned from working with some of the top military personnel alive, including Navy Seals 3 daily habits that Matt used to pull himself out of hell The realities of training to be a Navy Rescue Swimmer  How the Navy Rescue Swimmer motto, "So others may live," continues to fuel Matt today And so much more!    TO LEARN MORE ABOUT MATT CHECK OUT THE LINKS BELOW:  ReleaseYourHero.com Matt Grace's Facebook Matt Grace's Instagram  Contact Matt directly by emailing: Mattt@ReleaseYourHero.com BOOK REFERENCE:  NLP for Dummies   OVERCOMING GRADUATION SHOW NOTES:  To book your free one hour Clarity Session to: Gain a crystal-clear understanding of what are your life’s passions and find out what actions to take TODAY to start making your dreams reality, FASTER than you ever thought possible Uncover hidden challenges / mindsets that are sabotaging your success Gain a new understanding on life to leave each session feeling renewed, energized, and inspired to take on life’s biggest challenges TODAY Click the link below!
